Role of chemical groups in regulating membrane tension of mBMSCs under stretch stimulation

Yunqing Ye,Haoyang Huang,Hong Li,Gang Wu

As a crucial mechanobiological regulator, the tension of the cell membrane plays a vital role in governing cellular adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation processes. Additionally, it displayed a dynamic response to mechanical microenvironmental changes. This research systematically examines the mechanoresponsive behaviors of mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs) that are cultured on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrates which are functionalized with methyl (-CH 3 ), amino (-NH 2 ), and carboxyl (-COOH) groups. Under both static and stretching conditions, it is found that compared with the -CH 3 surface, static culture on the -NH 2 and -COOH functionalized surfaces significantly promotes the proliferation of mBMSCs and upregulates the expression of extracellular matrix adhesion-related genes, especially focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and integrin β1. Morphometric analysis reveals that there are concomitant increases in the cell spreading area and the number of pseudopods on these modified surfaces. Mechanical stretching stimulation not only amplifies these cellular responses but also leads to more uniform FAK distribution. The assessment by atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows that both chemical functionalization (-NH 2 /-COOH) and stretch stimulation reduce the deformability of the cell membrane, and the -NH 2 modification exhibits a greater membrane-stiffening effect than -COOH.

Reproducible mechanical-to-optical energy conversion in Mn (II) doped sphalerite ZnS

Ronghua Ma,Xiaoyan Wei,Chunfeng Wang,Shaohui Mao,Bing Chen,Yonghong Shao,Yu Fu,Keyu Yan,Dengfeng Peng

Mechanoluminescenece (ML) is a dynamic luminescence phenomenon of materials under various mechanical stimulation. Impurity doped ZnS shows high ML repeatability without any needs for extra excitation sources, thus making it very promising in applications like stress sensing and battery-free new light source . Lots of progress has been made in the last decades, however, the reproducible ML (RML) mechanism is still unclear to explain some basic phenomena like how the electron is excited to conduction band when undergoing mechanical actions or how the excitation energy is transferred to the dopants so efficiently. Based on comparative study of photoluminescence (PL) and ML in Mn 2+ doped ZnS prepared via melt-salt method, the RML energy routes in sphalerite ZnS: Mn 2+ is proposed herein, and further, a general mechanism is supposed which could apply to other RML systems. The excitation of RML is possibly generated by electron transfer during bond rebuilding in plastic deformation while the highly efficient energy transfer is realized through hole and electron capture by the dopant. According to this mechanism, we provide some prospects for further optimization of RML performance as well as discovery of new RML materials.

Self-healing electro-optical skin for dual-mode human-machine interaction

Zeren Lu,Weikang Li,Liming Zhu,Yufan Zhang,Zechang Ming,Yue Zhang,Xinran Zhou,Jiaqing Xiong

Scenario-adaptive electronic skins (e-skins) are significant for improving human-machine-environment interaction. Realizing high-performance e-skins with electro-optical cooperative perceptivity (EO-skin) for mechanical stimuli monitoring remains challenging. Herein, utilizing microphase separated styrene-isoprene-styrene and ethyl vinyl acetate (SIS-EVA) as elastomer matrix, we demonstrate a stretchable, adhesive, and self-healable mechanoluminescent tactile EO-skin with triboelectric self-powered perceptivity. The EO-skin possesses a seamlessly integrated tri-layer structure by interface etching and self-binding effect in continuous casting, where the top mechanoluminescent layer (SIS-EVA embedded with ZnS/CaZnOS:Mn 2 + particles) adheres to an electrode layer consisting of SIS-EVA/silver flakes/liquid metal microparticles are encapsulated by an SIS-EVA substrate. This EO-skin can visualize mechanical stimuli (emit orange-yellow light) and generate triboelectric signals (∼65 V), demonstrating an electro-optical dual-mode interactive e-skin for tactile sensing to identify material textures, and touching/writing information. The EO-skin is adaptive to different surfaces (∼2.49 MPa adhesive strength), highly stretchable (tensile strain ∼1040 %) and self-healable (93 % mechanical healing efficiency) with stable electro-optical performances. In addition to traditional electrical tactile identification, dynamic optical capturing-based machine learning was used to build an electro-optical dual-mode human-machine interactive system for high-precision handwritten information identification (∼97.76 %). This self-healable EO-skin with electro-optical dual-mode sensing capability promises to realize multidimensional mechanical-adaptive human-machine interactions in specific scenarios.

Intrinsically stretchable tribotronic mechanoplastic artificial synapse

Jianhua Zeng,Libo Chen,Tianzhao Bu,Ziyue Wang,Likun Gong,Zhi-Bin Zhang,Junqing Zhao,Zhong Lin Wang,Chi Zhang

Stretchable synaptic devices with adaptability to elastic deformation, sensing environmental stimuli, and unique information processing functions are of great significance for the development of the next generation of artificial nervous systems. Here, an intrinsically stretchable tribotronic mechanoplastic artificial synapse (STMAS) is proposed, which is integrated by a triboelectric nanogenerator and an electrolyte-gated transistor with ion-gel as dielectric layer. The STMAS can be modulated by the triboelectric potential induced by mechanical stimulation without the need to apply an external gate voltage, achieving an active mechanical tuning of synaptic plasticity such as excitatory postsynaptic current, paired-pulse facilitation, short-term plasticity, and long-term plasticity. The STMAS exhibits stable synaptic plasticity under 0–50% stretcher strain in parallel and vertical to channel directions, respectively. Furthermore, the International Morse code triggered by mechanical signals has been successfully mimicked. This work has achieved an intrinsically stretchable tribotronic artificial synapse with mechanically tuned synaptic behavior, which will help promote the development of artificial nervous systems and expand the applications of artificial synapses in intelligent robotics, artificial limbs and human–machine interaction.

Dual-response signal under mechanical stimulation: Alkyl substituent effect on the fine-tuning of molecular packing

Jianai Chen,Mingjiao Sun,Yujie Dong,Weijun Li,Fener Chen

Mechanical stimulus-responsive materials are generally considered to be closely related to molecular packing in the solid state, underscoring the significance of regulating molecular packing via precise molecular design. In this study, flexible alkyl substituents were employed to adjust the molecular packing. By modifying alkyl substituents, predictable changes in the molecular packing of their derivatives were observed, resulting in adjustable ML properties. The DPA-PYZ-TB with a tert-butyl-side chain exhibited strong ML and MC stimulus response signals. The enhanced ML and MC performance can be attributed to the effective suppression of non-radiation through the helical crystal arrangement and strong intermolecular interactions. The relationship between molecular arrangement and ML/MC properties was validated through analysis of the single crystal structure and corresponding experimental results. This study offers valuable insights into the enigmatic ML process and the development of efficient luminous materials that utilize both MC and ML.

A Cyclical Magneto-Responsive Massage Dressing for Wound Healing

Meng Zhu,Zihe Hu,Nian Liu,Ke Yao,Gaoying Hong,Yuanrong Li,Yuewei Chen,Honghui He,Wenzhi Wu,Yanyan Zhou,Jue Shi,Yong He

Tissue development is mediated by a combination of mechanical and biological signals. Currently, there are many reports on biological signals regulating repair. However, insufficient attention is paid to the process of mechanical regulation, especially the active mechanical regulation in vivo, which has not been realized. Herein, a novel dynamically regulated repair system for both in vitro and in vivo applications is developed, which utilizes magnetic nanoparticles as non-contact actuators to activate hydrogels. The magnetic hydrogel can be periodically activated and deformed to different amplitudes by a dynamic magnetic system. An in vitro skin model is used to explore the impact of different dynamic stimuli on cellular mechano-transduction signal activation and cell differentiation. Specifically, the effect of mechanical stimulation on the phenotypic transition of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts is investigated. Furthermore, in vivo results verify that dynamic massage can simulate and enhance the traction effect in skin defects, thereby accelerating the wound healing process by promoting re-epithelialization and mediating dermal contraction.

A novel non-invasive method for measuring the spatial kinematic behavior of cardiomyocytes regulated by mechanical cues

Si Tang,Huiyao Shi,Jialin Shi,Zhenghua Wang,Dingyi Wang,Chanmin Quanmin Su,Lianqing Liu

The intact heart undergoes complex and multiscale mechanical remodeling processes. Measuring rhythmic spatial contraction of the myocardium is crucial for assessing mechanical durability and the ability to mount coordinated responses to pressure, electrical, and hemodynamic signals. However, current cardiomyocyte measurement platforms typically focus on action potentials and XY-plane contractions. Therefore, effective evaluation methods for studying the influence of mechanical cues on the spatial dynamic contraction of cardiomyocytes are still lacking. In this study, we developed a topographic guiding combined with an optical spatial motion tracking method to provide controllable mechanical stimulation for inducing directed contraction of cardiomyocytes and obtaining spatial motion information in vitro . We first performed a detailed investigation of cell connections and cytoskeleton orientations by combining the proposed method with immunofluorescence. Next, spatial constrictive modes, features, and key parameters of microgroove-guided cardiomyocytes were studied. Finally, the three-dimensional (3D) motions of the cardiomyocytes at different positions on the structure were compared. We found that the XY-plane contraction of cardiomyocytes typically has only one direction and shows a significant phase delay compared to the axial motion. In addition, cardiomyocytes located near the edges of the microgrooves were restricted by stronger mechanical forces, resulting in a significant height change reduction. These results provide new perspectives for structural and functional research on cardiomyocytes under long-term mechanical regulation. Overall, this study provides a highly precise and convenient method for evaluating the 3D cardiomyocyte motion under mechanical induction. This method is expected to enhance understanding of cardiomyocyte development and be useful for research on cardiac mechanics and functions.

Stretchable hybrid platform-enabled interactive perception of strain sensing and visualization

Yikun Liu,Yongju Gao,Beom Jin Kim,Meili Xia,Yunlong Zhou,Yongjing Zhang,Yang Li,Jianying Huang,Duxia Cao,Songfang Zhao,Jong-Hyun Ahn,Yuekun Lai

Human–machine interactive platforms that can sense mechanical stimuli visually and digitally are highly desirable. However, most existing interactive devices cannot satisfy the demands of tactile feedback and extended integration. Inspired by the mechanoluminescence (ML) function of cephalopod skin and the sensitive perception of microcracked slit-organs, a bioinspired stretchable interactive platform is developed by designing a stretchable poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-styrene)/fluorescent molecule (SFM) composite followed by the in situ polymerization of pyrrole (Py) and deposition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which possesses a simple multilayered structure and quantitatively senses the applied strains via the variations of digital electrical resistance and visual fluorescence intensity. Using the strain-dependent microstructures derived from the synergistic interactions of the rigid PPy/CNTs functional layer and SFM, the SFM/PPy/CNTs-based platforms exhibit excellent strain-sensing performance manifested by a high gauge factor (GF = 2.64 × 10 4 ), wide sensing range (~270%), fast response/recovery time (~155/195 ms), excellent stability (~15,000 cycles at 40% strain), and sensitive ML characteristics under ultraviolet illumination. Benefiting from the novel fusion of digital data and visual images, important applications, including the detection of wrist pulses and human motions, and information dual-encryption, are demonstrated. This study demonstrates the superiority of advanced structures and materials for realizing superior applications in wearable electronics.

A Delayed Cross-Linking Strategy for Evolvable Hydrogels

Zhixuan Liang,Yiheng Li,Liu He,Zhi Gao,Zhenbin Tang,Yiting Xu,Birong Zeng,Weiang Luo,Guorong Chen,Conghui Yuan,Lizong Dai

Biological tissues grow or evolve through a series of complicated processes of matter and energy internalization, which are highly challenging to mimic in synthetic materials. Herein, a delayed cross-linking strategy is developed to program the reactivity of cross-linking sites and make hydrogels evolvable. The polymer networks are constructed by combining polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with a polyzwitterion comprising both cationic quaternary ammonium and anionic phenylboronic acid groups (PQBA). Shielding of phenylboronic acid groups in ion pairs and polyzwitterion microdomains delays the cross-linking between PVA and PQBA. Mechanical stimulations unlock the phenylboronic acid groups and dramatically accelerate the cross-linking reaction. A simple stretching treatment makes the hydrogels stronger. Training the hydrogels with five cycles of 200% stretching results in up to ≈13.0- and ≈22.8-fold of enhancements in tensile strength and maximum Young's modulus, respectively. The hydrogels can also self-evolve in a damage-healing process, the fracture strength and maximum Young's modulus of the hydrogels increase by at most ≈7.5- and ≈27.2-fold after five times of repeated tensile rupture and self-healing. The study demonstrates the possibility of designing “living polymeric materials” by programming the cross-linking kinetics of polymer networks.

A positively charged aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen as an ultra-sensitive mechanochromic luminescent material: design, synthesis and versatile applications

Weidong Yin,Zengming Yang,Shaoxiong Zhang,Yuan Yang,Lixia Zhao,Zhao Li,Bo Zhang,Shengjun Zhang,Bingyang Han,Hengchang Ma

Nowadays, the rational design of a mechanochromic luminescent (ML) material with ultra-sensitivity toward external stimuli is a greatly challenging task. In this contribution, TPA–Pyr–BP is readily synthesized and verified as a typical AIE luminogen (AIEgen), which consists of a twisted electron donor of triphenylamine (TPA) and a strong electron acceptor of pyridinium (Pyr), and this structural fabrication method shows an elevated electron D–A interaction and intra-molecular charge transfer (ICT) behavior. Specifically, due to the presence of a benzophenone (BP) derivative within the molecular structure, TPA–Pyr–BP exhibits a strong UV absorption ability (ε = 42 360 L mol−1 cm−1). In contrast to a variety of analogues, TPA–Pyr–BP shows ultra-sensitivity with regard to the stimuli of mechanical force, and a sharp signal contrast is expressed with not only a large fluorescence intensity enhancement, but also an obvious emission wavelength shift of 102 nm. Then, the corresponding sensitive performance is extended to demonstrations of different applications, such as being used as a mechanosensor, solid material surface damage reporter, and fingerprint information extractor, as well as in the preparation of security papers. It is also found that the different aggregation states of TPA–Pyr–BP are responsible for this smart behavior.

Wirelessly detecting of spatiotemporal mechanical stimuli by a bio-inspired neural sensor via temperature signals

Peidi Zhou,Zhonghua Zheng,Jian Lin,Wansong Gu,Zhiling Luo,Yingying Zhang,Luzhuo Chen

Traditional artificial sensory systems, inspired by biological sensory nervous systems, require the integration of distributed units and wired connections to realize the perception of external mechanical stimuli, which brings disadvantages such as complex connections, complicated structures, and interference between signals. Herein, we propose a bio-inspired artificial neural sensor with a highlighted ability of wirelessly detecting spatiotemporal mechanical stimuli, which is fabricated by carbon nanotube and polymer composites. Because the resistance of the sensor varies in respond to external mechanical stimuli, the consequential temperature changes caused by Joule heating effect can be wirelessly detected, realizing the recognition of different mechanical stimuli and multi-positional sensing. The great durability (>1400 cycles) allow the sensor to withstand long-lasting mechanical stimuli. In addition, the artificial neural sensor enables programmable design in device shapes and functions, and it needs no energy consumption without stimulus. We demonstrate a series of touch-interaction applications based on the neural sensor, such as human–computer interaction, encrypted information transmission, and remote control. We hope that this artificial neural sensor will facilitate the development of complex bionic sensing systems, virtual reality, and metaverse.

Laser Direct Writing of Flexible Sensor Arrays Based on Carbonized Carboxymethylcellulose and Its Composites for Simultaneous Mechanical and Thermal Stimuli Detection

Qi Li,Ruijie Bai,Yang Gao,Rongyao Wu,Kuan Ju,Jianping Tan,Fuzhen Xuan

Multifunctional sensing devices with high flexibility, high sensitivity, and scalable fabrication are inevitable components of Internet of Things (IoT) for human–machine interfaces, structural health monitoring, and soft robots. Herein, high-performance flexible sensor arrays using carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and its composite were developed for mechanical and thermal stimuli detection by laser direct writing. CMC contains abundant carbon precursors for strain-sensitive laser-carbonized CMC (LC-CMC), while the incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) into CMC leads to the formation of thermal-sensitive laser-carbonized GO/CMC (LC-GO/CMC). The LC-CMC-based strain sensor delivers gauge factors of 487.7 (strain < 8.5%) and 8557 (8.5% < strain < 14%), with long-term stability over 10 000 cycles. With 0.2 wt % GO, the LC-GO/CMC-based device provides a temperature coefficient of resistance of −0.289% °C –1, higher than the Cr-based commercial sensor. The potential application of the devices in IoT is proved by combining the near-field communication technology with the LC-CMC-based device to monitor the strain suffered by 316L stainless steel during the fatigue test. Moreover, an integrated device based on the strain and temperature sensing arrays accomplishes the simultaneous measurement of temperature and mechanical deformation in real time.
