Activated carbons are widely used as the electrode material for supercapacitors owing to their large surface area, moderate conductivity, and outstanding electrochemical stability. However, large-surface-area activated carbons usually show low density and poor volumetric energy storage performance, which is difficult to meet the development of devices miniaturization. Mechanical compression is a simple and effective method to improve the density of the activated carbons. However, most of the studies focus on mechanical compression of the as-prepared porous carbon materials. Preparation of high-density activated carbons by mechanical compression of the carbon precursors has been proposed. But the surface area and porous structure evolution, and the possible mechanism have rarely investigated. Herein, we propose a universal method to improve the density of the activated carbons by mechanical compression of the precursors before activation. The influence of mechanical compression on the surface area, porous structure, and capacitive energy storage performance of the activated carbons prepared by two typical methods, outside-in activation (carbon powder/KOH mixture) and homogeneous ion activation (pyrolysis of potassium-containing salts), are studied. Mechanical compression of the precursors can generally improve the activation reaction efficiency, as well as the density and volumetric capacitive performance of the activated carbons. However, the surface area and porous structure evolution mainly depend on the carbon precursor and pore-forming process. For outside-in activation, the surface area and porosity of the activated carbons show a first increasing and then decreasing trend with the increase of mechanical pressure. This is because mechanical compression enhances the contact between the carbon precursors and activator through eliminating the voids between particles, significantly improves the activation efficiency. For homogeneous ion activation, the surface area and porosity of activated carbons show a trend of decreasing first and then increasing. The reason is deduced as compressed precursors inhibit the rapid release of active gas molecules (H 2 O, CO 2 etc .) produced during pyrolysis. These gas molecules further participate in the activation etching reaction and promote the activation efficiency. The optimized sample shows high gravimetric and volumetric capacitances of 316 F g −1 /291 F cm −3 and 131 F g −1 /92 F cm −3 at 1 A g −1 in aqueous and organic electrolytes, respectively. This work provides a simple way for design and preparation of activated carbons with large surface area and high density.

Aerogels derived from nanocellulose have emerged as attractive absorbents for cleaning up oil spills and organic pollutants due to their lightweight, exceptional absorption capacity, and sustainability. However, the majority of the nanocellulose aerogels based on the bottom-up fabrication process still lack sufficient mechanical robustness because of their disordered architecture with randomly assembled cellulose nanofibrils, which is an obstacle to their practical application as oil absorbents. Herein, we report an effective strategy to create anisotropic cellulose-based wood sponges with a special spring-like lamellar structure directly from natural balsa wood. The selective removal of lignin and hemicelluloses via chemical treatment broke the thin cell walls of natural wood, leading to a lamellar structure with wave-like stacked layers upon freeze-drying. A subsequent silylation reaction allowed the growth of polysiloxane coatings on the skeleton surface. The resulting silylated wood sponge exhibited high mechanical compressibility (reversible compression of 60%) and elastic recovery (∼99% height retention after 100 cycles at 40% strain). The wood sponge showed excellent oil/water absorption selectivity with a high oil absorption capacity of 41 g g–1. Moreover, the absorbed oils can be recovered by simple mechanical squeezing, and the porous sponge maintained a high oil-absorption capacity upon multiple squeezing-absorption cycles, displaying excellent recyclability. Taking advantage of the unidirectional liquid transport of the porous sponge, an oil-collecting device was successfully designed to continuously separate contaminants from water. Such an easy, low-cost, and scalable top-down approach holds great potential for developing effective and reusable oil absorbents for oil/water separation.

Established studies proved that mechanical compression loading had multiple effects on the biological behavior of the intervertebral disc (IVD). However, the regulating mechanism involved in this process remains unclear. The current study is aimed at exploring the potential bioregulators and signaling pathways involved in the compression-associated biological changes of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells. Tandem mass tag- (TMT-) based quantitative proteomics was exerted to analyze the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and signal pathways among the different groups of NP cells cultured under noncompression, low-compression (LC), and high-compression (HC) loading. Eight potential protective bioregulators for the NP cell survival under different compression loading were predicted by the proteomics, among which macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and oxidative stress-related pathways were selected for further evaluation, due to its similar function in regulating the fate of the cartilage endplate- (CEP-) derived cells. We found that deficiency of MIF accentuates the accumulation of ROS, mitochondrial dysfunction, and senescence of NP cells under overloaded mechanical compression. The potential molecular mechanism involved in this process is related to the mitophagy regulating role of MIF. Our findings provide a better understanding of the regulatory role of mechanical compression on the cellular fate commitment and matrix metabolism of NP, and the potential strategies for treating disc degenerative diseases via using MIF-regulating agents.

Graphene aerogel is a promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material because of its light weight, excellent electrical conductivity, uniform three-dimensional (3D) microporous structure, and good mechanical strength. The graphene aerogel with high EMI shielding performance is attracting considerable critical attention. In this study, a novel procedure to fabricate high EMI shielding graphene aerogel was presented, inspired by the irreversible deformation of hydrogels under mechanical pressure. The procedure involved a mechanical compression step on graphene hydrogels for the purpose of altering microstructures followed by freeze-drying and thermal annealing at 900 °C to generate the final products. Because of the flow of internal liquid caused by mechanical compression, the microstructures of hydrogels changed from a cellular configuration to a layered configuration. After a high degree of compression, GAs can be endowed with homogeneous layered structure and high density, which plays a leading role in electromagnetic wave dissipation. Consequently, the aerogels with excellent electrical conductivity (181.8 S/m) and EMI shielding properties (43.29 dB) could be obtained. Besides, the compression process enabled us to form complex hydrogel shapes via different molds. This method enhances the formability of graphene aerogels and provides a robust way to control the microstructure.

In this work, we have devised a new approach to measure the critical pressure that a liquid marble can withstand. A liquid marble is gradually squeezed under a mechanical compression applied by two parallel plates. It ruptures at a sufficiently large applied pressure. Combining the force measurement and the high-speed imaging, we can determine the critical pressure that ruptures the liquid marble. This critical pressure, which reflects the mechanical robustness of liquid marbles, depends on the type and size of the stabilizing particles as well as the chemical nature of the liquid droplet. By investigating the surface of the liquid marble, we attribute its rupture under the critical pressure to the low surface coverage of particles when highly stretched. Moreover, the applied pressure can be reflected by the inner Laplace pressure of the liquid marble considering the squeezing test is a quasi-static process. By analyzing the Laplace pressure upon rupture of the liquid marble, we predict the dependence of the critical pressure on the size of the liquid marble, which agrees well with experimental results.

There is an urgent need for developing ultra-stable sensors with robust interfacial connections to promote the progress of intelligent technology. Here we propose a strategy for fabricating porous sensors with covalent-linked interfaces, which significantly improve the device’s mechanical and environmental stability. By endowing the polymer reactive siloxane group for further dehydration and condensation process, the modified polymer can on one hand form interface covalent Ti-O-Si bonds with hydroxyl-rich MXene nanosheets for improved interfacial adhesion, and on the other hand, form internal self-condensed Si-O-Si bonds for strengthened mechanical resilience. Owing to the firmly undetached conductive materials, the resulting sensor can maintain stable signal output, and survive harsh conditions including repeated mechanical compression and rigorous water and acid washing. These features make the covalent-linked sensor feasible for human sitting posture monitoring over prolonged periods and spatial distribution detection in various complicated operation scenarios.

In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles can be readily in situ generated on the skeleton surface throughout the entire structure of cellulose-based sponges obtained from waste corn straws via a hydrothermal process. Taking natural corn straws as the basic ingredient, the Water Cellulose-based Sponge@ZIF-8 (WCSZ) composite inherits the highly porous structure of straws, which is beneficial for the movement of H2O molecules in both horizontal and vertical directions. A robust H-bond topological network is weaved between abundant hydroxyl groups of the corn straw cell wall matrix and H2O molecules in the honeycomb cellular structure. Based on the topological network, the WCSZ composite maintains sufficient mechanical compressibility and elasticity, which could sustain repeated squeezing without structural failure. The WCSZ composite can not only bear a compressive strain as high as 60% but also completely recover its original height after the load is removed, exhibiting excellent mechanical property. More importantly, the WCSZ composite also presents exceptional antibacterial activities after ZIF-8 nanoparticles were introduced (antibacterial rate: 99.9%). Consequently, the WCSZ composite is an ideal candidate for highly efficient elimination of bacteria as the reusable water treatment material.

The demand for biomass-modified hydrophobic materials in environmental remediation, particularly for cleaning up spilled oils and organic solvents, has significantly increased. This study introduces a novel approach to enhance the hydrophobic properties of commercial melamine sponge (MS) through a simple immersion strategy employing a tetrahydrofuran (THF) extract solution derived from biomass sources such as corn stove, pine, and Eucalyptus. This modification process yielded a highly hydrophobic absorbent with notable superoleophilicity, capable of absorbing various oils (104 g.g -1 ) and organic solvents (137 g.g -1 ). The resulting modified MS exhibited an expressive oil adsorption capacity, as evidenced by water contact angle exceeding 130°. Notably, its three-dimensional high porosity and micro/nano-structure, conducive to air entrapment, conferred exceptional resilience to mechanical extrusion, harsh temperature treatments, and facilitated recyclability. Additionally, the study explored alternative biomass extraction solutions including γ-valerolactone, N, N-dimethylformamide, acetone, methanol, and ethanol. These solutions were found to be viable modification agents for producing hydrophobic MS through the immersion strategy. Importantly, the hydrophobicity and stability of the modified MS obtained through this method surpassed those of lignin-modified and deep eutectic solvent -extracted lignin-modified MS. This research not only underscores the potential of a facile, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly dipping approach for enhancing the hydrophobicity of MS, but also opens up new avenues for developing modified MS with superior performance in the cleanup of spilled oils and organic solvents.

Halide solid-state electrolytes are promising for next-generation all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries due to their high ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical windows. While most research focuses on close-packed crystal structures, nonclose-packed frameworks─exemplified by UCl3-type structures─offer unique advantages in enhancing lithium-ion transport via reduced diffusion barriers. Here, we report a new family of UCl3-type crystalline oxychloride electrolytes, Li0.388+xLa0.475Ta0.238Cl3–xOx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.388, LLTCO), synthesized via rapid high-energy shake milling. The material with an optimized composition (x = 0.15) exhibits high ionic conductivity above 2 mS cm–1 at 30 °C, oxidative stability exceeding 5 V vs Li/Li+, and excellent mechanical compressibility. Moreover, the LLTCO-based Li–Li symmetric cells show a long cycle life, indicating their strong capacity to suppress lithium dendrite formation. Spectroscopy analyses reveal the successful incorporation of oxygen, which preferentially substitutes Cl– around Ta5+ sites without compromising crystallinity, even at a high oxygen content. The oxygen incorporation further promotes the formation of Li environments with fast dynamics, accounting for the enhanced conductivity. All-solid-state batteries utilizing the optimized oxychloride electrolyte in conjunction with Ni-rich cathodes demonstrate enhanced reversible capacities compared to their undoped counterparts. This work highlights the benefits of nonclose-packed UCl3-type oxychloride electrolytes, offering new design strategies for high-performance all-solid-state batteries.

Oil/water mixtures are easily converted into microemulsions with high stability and complex structures under the action of surfactant, causing great difficulties for effective separation. In this paper, we report a 3D porous melamine sponge with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties via a facile 1,4-conjugate addition reaction between amine and acrylate groups for coating nano-complex on the sponge surface and subsequently covalent modification with amine-functionalized long-chain alkane for decrease the surface energy. In order to satisfy the requirement of pore sizes in emulsion separation, a novel and controllable approach has been explored to control the pore sizes and 3D porous structure of the resultant sponge by the mechanical compression strategy. Notably, when the emulsified oil/water mixtures were poured into the modified sponge with 90% compression degree of its original volume, the demulsification occurred immediately and then the oil phase passed through the sponge quickly, while water droplets were interrupted in the tortuous pore channels. Combined with the special wettability and the novel pore sizes tuning strategy, the resulting sponges can effectively separate a wide range of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with fast permeation flux of 32,500 ± 2000 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 under the action of gravity and extremely high oil purity (>99.97%). It is expected that the superhydrophobic sponge with the novel compression approach can provide a general strategy for 3D porous materials used for effective separation of emulsified oil/water emulsions.

A comprehensive understanding of cellular mechanical heterogeneity is essential for identifying phenotypic variations. Impedance flow cytometry offers a high-throughput, label-free approach to assess single-cell electrical properties, yet current methods focus primarily on undeformed cells and overlook mechanical perturbations that may alter cytoskeletal structure and membrane behavior. Here, we present an integrated system that combines controlled mechanical compression with impedance measurement to quantify mechanical opacity—an electrical metric reflecting membrane permeability under dynamic deformation. This parameter correlates with cytoskeletal integrity and reveals how mechanical stimuli influence electrical responses. Theoretical modeling shows that membrane permittivity and conductivity critically shape frequency-dependent impedance, supporting the use of dual-frequency (500 kHz and 5 MHz) measurements to probe both intra- and extracellular properties. We define a four-parameter feature set (Rsqu, Rsti1, Rsti2, Rrelax) to capture impedance changes during deformation and relaxation, offering a compact and interpretable mechanical signature. Using this system, we demonstrate distinct mechanical opacity profiles among three human cancer cell lines (HeLa, SW1990, BxPC-3), reflecting their inherent biomechanical differences. Fluorescence assays confirm that lower mechanical opacity corresponds to increased membrane permeability, linking electrical measurements to underlying structural changes. Our work establishes mechanical opacity as a dynamic, label-free marker for single-cell mechanics, bridging mechanical stimulation and electrical detection. This approach expands the capability of impedance flow cytometry for applications in cell classification, drug screening, and disease diagnostics.
