Lightweight and robust Ti3C2Tx/carbon nanotubes foam with tuneable and highly efficient microwave absorption performance

Kexuan Hu,Hehe Wang,Wei Cheng,Yujian Rao,Limei Pan,Chuanfang John Zhang,Yang Wang,Quan Li,Jian Yang

In this study, a lightweight and robust Ti 3 C 2 T x /carbon nanotubes (CNTs) foam (TCF) was fabricated using HCl-induced self-assembly, followed by vacuum freeze-drying. The electrical conductivity and mechanical elasticity of the TCF was higher than those of monolithic Ti 3 C 2 T x foams. This was ascribed to the incorporation of CNTs into Ti 3 C 2 T x preventing the stacking of the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and producing a well-developed three-dimensional honeycomb-like porous network structure, which considerably improved impedance matching, promoted multiple reflection loss, increased conduction loss and polarisation loss, thus imparting remarkable microwave absorption properties to the TCF. The 1.72 and 1.92 mm thick TCF samples with absorber loadings of 4 wt%, which were obtained by immersing TCF into molten paraffin, followed by cutting it into coaxial rings, presented an optimum reflection loss of −48.8 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.44 GHz, respectively. Moreover, upon increasing the thickness of the TCF samples from 1.52 to 4.92 mm, the EAB could be regulated from 4.16 to 18 GHz, respectively. In this study, we developed a facile method for fabricating a lightweight and robust TCF, which met the ‘light, thin, broad, and strong’ criteria and presented a broad EAB and remarkable dissipation capability, for microwave absorption materials.

Silane bonded graphene aerogels with tunable functionality and reversible compressibility

Li-Zhi Guan,Jie-Feng Gao,Yong-Bing Pei,Li Zhao,Li-Xiu Gong,Yan-Jun Wan,Helezi Zhou,Nan Zheng,Xu-Sheng Du,Lian-Bin Wu,Jian-Xiong Jiang,Hong-Yuan Liu,Long-Cheng Tang,Yiu-Wing Mai

Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based porous materials with a combination of low density, superelasticity , excellent mechanical resilience and tunable functionalities can be used in diverse applications. Here we report an approach of fabricating the stable and flexible 3D graphene aerogel materials with tunable functionality via a general silane-assisted processing that maintains an effective control of the chemistry, architecture and functionality of these porous structures. Simultaneous reduction and functionalization were achieved under both a low temperature and a low graphene oxide concentration in aqueous solution via using a facile one-step co-assembly method. The introduction of silane bonding tailors both the porous microstructure and the surface property of the lightweight aerogel effectively, subsequently providing improved mechanical properties and versatile functionalities including super compressive elasticity, outstanding cyclic resilient property, good electrical conductivity , stable viscoelastic properties, high level energy absorption capacity, excellent hydrophobicity , remarkable thermal stability and extremely high sensitivity of elasticity-dependent electrical conductivity. This opens up scalable and low-cost ways to the integration of microscopic two-dimensional graphene sheets into macroscopic 3D graphene aerogel materials, thus providing the possibility of fabricating novel lightweight porous aerogel materials with controllable functionalities and reversible compressibility for applications in numerous fields.

An ultrasensitive fire-warning chitosan/montmorillonite/carbon nanotube composite aerogel with high fire-resistance

Jiayun Chen,Huali Xie,Xuejun Lai,Hongqiang Li,Jiefeng Gao,Xingrong Zeng

High fire-safe aerogel with multi-functionality is urgently desirable due to the frequent fire disasters. However, it is still a challenge to afford both excellent flame retardancy and sensitive fire-warning in combustible aerogels. Herein, we fabricated an ultrasensitive fire-warning and high fire-resistance chitosan/montmorillonite/carbon nanotube composite aerogel (CCA) via freeze-drying. Benefiting from the rapid decrease of the electrical resistance for amino-functionalized carbon nanotube when being burned, CCA achieved a hitherto shortest fire-warning response time (~0.25 s). Importantly, the aerogel exhibited excellent flame retardancy and self-extinguished in the vertical burning test. Besides, owing to the hierarchical porous structure of the aerogel and the excellent barrier effect of the montmorillonite nanosheet, CCA could resist a high-temperature flame up to 1200 °C and effectively prevent the temperature of the nonexposed side from increasing, exhibiting excellent thermal insulation. Furthermore, the mechanical resilience, anti-fatigue performance, electrical conductivity, and unique three-dimensional network endowed the aerogel with good piezoresistivity. This work provides a facile, environmentally-friendly, and cost-effective approach to fabricating multifunctional fire-safe aerogel, showing promising applications in exterior wall insulation, vehicle interior, firefighting, and wearable electronics.

Coupling of Adhesion and Anti-Freezing Properties in Hydrogel Electrolytes for Low-Temperature Aqueous-Based Hybrid Capacitors

Nan Jingya,Sun Yue,Yang Fusheng,Zhang Yijing,Li Yuxi,Wang Zihao,Wang Chuchu,Wang Dingkun,Chu Fuxiang,Wang Chunpeng,Zhu Tianyu,Jiang Jianchun

Solid-state zinc-ion capacitors are emerging as promising candidates for large-scale energy storage owing to improved safety, mechanical and thermal stability and easy-to-direct stacking. Hydrogel electrolytes are appealing solid-state electrolytes because of eco-friendliness, high conductivity and intrinsic flexibility. However, the electrolyte/electrode interfacial contact and anti-freezing properties of current hydrogel electrolytes are still challenging for practical applications of zinc-ion capacitors. Here, we report a class of hydrogel electrolytes that couple high interfacial adhesion and anti-freezing performance. The synergy of tough hydrogel matrix and chemical anchorage enables a well-adhered interface between hydrogel electrolyte and electrode. Meanwhile, the cooperative solvation of ZnCl 2 and LiCl hybrid salts renders the hydrogel electrolyte high ionic conductivity and mechanical elasticity simultaneously at low temperatures. More significantly, the Zn||carbon nanotubes hybrid capacitor based on this hydrogel electrolyte exhibits low-temperature capacitive performance, delivering high-energy density of 39 Wh kg −1 at −60 °C with capacity retention of 98.7% over 10,000 cycles. With the benefits of the well-adhered electrolyte/electrode interface and the anti-freezing hydrogel electrolyte, the Zn/Li hybrid capacitor is able to accommodate dynamic deformations and function well under 1000 tension cycles even at −60 °C. This work provides a powerful strategy for enabling stable operation of low-temperature zinc-ion capacitors.

An adhesive interface between hydrogel electrolyte and electrode for low-temperature solid-state capacitive devices

Yue Sun,Chengsheng Gui,Yijing Zhang,Jingya Nan,Yuxi Li,Zihao Wang,Lu Sun,Xushen Tan,Chuchu Wang,Fusheng Yang,Fuxiang Chu,Chunpeng Wang

Compared to conventional liquid systems, solid-state energy storage systems show more attractive application prospects due to improved safety, higher energy density and thermal/electrochemical stability. However, the commercial development of solid-state energy storage devices is hindered by the chemo-mechanically unstable interface between solid-state electrolyte and electrode. The hydrogel electrolytes have attracted extensive attention for this issue owing to their certain adhesion, intrinsic flexibility, and eco-friendliness. Here, we report a universal strategy for adhesive hydrogel electrolyte that simultaneously achieves robust adhesion and anti-freezing properties. The robust adhesion of hydrogel electrolyte is achieved by combining the tough hydrogel matrix with strong interface interactions. Meanwhile, the hydrogel electrolyte equipped with zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) and lithium chloride (LiCl) ensures high ionic conductivity and stable mechanical elasticity at 25 ~ −60 °C, thus leading to the anti-freezing electrolyte/electrode interface. More encouragingly, the assembled carbon nanotubes (CNTs)||CNTs supercapacitors and Zn||CNTs hybrid capacitors possess excellent capacitive performance at low temperatures, delivering high energy densities of 3.5 Wh kg −1 for CNTs||CNTs supercapacitors and 51.3 Wh kg ‐ −1 for Zn||CNTs hybrid capacitors at −60 °C, and extraordinary cycling durability with stable capacity retention over 10,000 cycles for CNTs||CNTs supercapacitors and Zn||CNTs hybrid capacitors. We expect this strategy to simplify and guide the development of solid-state energy storage devices operating under extreme conditions.
