Severe skin wounds arising from burns, cancers, and accidents can damage the entire tissue structure, resulting in permanent somatosensory dysfunction in patients. Although emerging hydrogel dressings have shown clinical potential for accelerating wound repair, the use of an individual material to synchronously restore the tissue structure and sensory function of defective skin remains a challenge. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel that combines electroconductive polydopamine-capped graphene nanosheets (PrGOs) embedded in a dynamically crosslinked dual-polysaccharide (xyloglucan and chitosan) matrix network is presented. The fabricated hydrogels have an adjustable modulus that can be matched to skin tissue at the wound site, owing to the dynamic Schiff-based crosslinking as well as the facile photo-triggered secondary crosslinking. Furthermore, the photothermal activity of PrGO can elevate the local temperature up to ≈50 °C, significantly restraining bacterial growth. These two factors jointly promote the regeneration of skin tissue. Tissue adhesion of hydrogels is also reported that offers a conformable and robust interface that can detect and quantify human movement and physiological signals to mimic the human skin somatosensory system. This hydrogel offers an effective one-stone-for-two-birds material that simultaneously achieves tissue regeneration and multi-signal sensing, promoting the restoration and/or replacement of the structure and function of damaged skins.

Human-sensitive mechanosensation depends on ionic currents controlled by skin mechanoreceptors. Inspired by the sensory behavior of skin, we investigate zwitterionic hydrogels that generate ions under an applied force in a mobile-ion-free system. Within this system, water dissociates as the distance between zwitterions reduces under an applied pressure. Meanwhile, zwitterionic segments can provide migration channels for the generated ions, significantly facilitating ion transport. These combined effects endow a mobile-ion-free zwitterionic skin sensor with sensitive transduction of pressure into ionic currents, achieving a sensitivity up to five times that of nonionic hydrogels. The signal response time, which relies on the crosslinking degree of the zwitterionic hydrogel, was ~38 ms, comparable to that of natural skin. The skin sensor was incorporated into a universal throat-worn silent-speech recognition system that transforms the tiny signals of laryngeal mechanical vibrations into silent speech.

Summary The pathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is featured with extracellular amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques, whose impact on the mechanical properties of the surrounding brain tissues is unclear. Microglia sense and integrate biochemical cues of the microenvironment. However, whether the microglial mechanosensing pathways influence AD pathogenesis is unknown. Here, we surveyed the elevated stiffness of Aβ-plaque-associated tissues and observed the selective upregulation of the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 in Aβ-plaque-associated microglia. Piezo1 sensed the stiffness stimuli of Aβ fibrils and subsequently induced Ca 2+ influx for microglial clustering, phagocytosis , and compacting of Aβ plaques. Microglia lacking Piezo1 led to the exacerbation of Aβ pathology and cognitive decline, whereas pharmacological activation of microglial Piezo1 ameliorated brain Aβ burden and cognitive impairment in 5 × FAD mice. Together, our results reveal that Piezo1, a mechanosensor of Aβ fibril stiffness in microglia, represents a potential therapeutic target for AD.

Advancement in human-robot interaction (HRI) is essential for the development of intelligent robots, but there lack paradigms to integrate remote control and tactile sensing for an ideal HRI. In this study, inspired by the platypus beak sense, we propose a bionic electro-mechanosensory finger (EM-Finger) synergizing triboelectric and visuotactile sensing for remote control and tactile perception . A triboelectric sensor array made of a patterned liquid-metal-polymer conductive (LMPC) layer encodes both touchless and tactile interactions with external objects into voltage signals in the air, and responds to electrical stimuli underwater for amphibious wireless communication . Besides, a three-dimensional finger-shaped visuotactile sensing system with the same LMPC layer as a reflector measures contact-induced deformation through marker detection and tracking methods. A bioinspired bimodal deep learning algorithm implements data fusion of triboelectric and visuotactile signals and achieves the classification of 18 common material types under varying contact forces with an accuracy of 94.4 %. The amphibious wireless communication capability of the triboelectric sensor array enables touchless HRI in the air and underwater, even in the presence of obstacles, while the whole system realizes high-resolution tactile sensing. By naturally integrating remote contorl and tactile sensing, the proposed EM-Finger could pave the way for enhanced HRI in machine intelligence.

Wet-resistant flexible electronics have gained impressive attention as underwater wearable sensors, all-weather electronic skins, and implantable bioelectrodes. However, fabricating a stable and nonswelling hydrogel-based electronic device used in diverse liquid media is challenging and promising for the progress of wet-resistance electronics. Herein, a solvent-resistant and tough hydrogel conductor is successfully prepared and exhibits fatigue resistance, antifreezing behavior, and nonswelling and wet-adhesion performances in organic and aqueous solutions. Moreover, the hydrogels are utilized as all-weather wearable sensors featuring high sensitivity, reliability, and wide sensing ranges for monitoring and distinguishing various physiological signals and human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel sensors can even achieve accurate and stable mechanical sensing of pressure, bending, and stretching in diverse solvents consisting of water, chloroform, hexane, and dodecane. It is envisioned that the solvent-resistant and antifreezing hydrogel conductor can present promising feasibility as all-weather electronic skins, intelligent sensors in solvents, and soft robots in various harsh liquid environments.

Mechanoluminescence is a newly developed technology for the optical sensing of stress or surface pressure. One unfortunate limiting factor in its application is the sensors’ low sensitivity to stress (usually in the MPa range). In this study, an ultra-sensitive mechanoluminescent sensor is created based on the phosphor SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ , that showed greatly enhanced sensitivity (by a hundred times) than that of conventional mechanoluminescent sensors. This sensor took the form of a ceramic coating that was prepared via air plasma spray and vacuum tempering retreatment. Pure SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ powder was used with no supporting matrix to eliminate the negative effects of the elastic mismatch on the sensitivity. The sensor could resolve stress variations on the order of kPa based on the calibration results. We also demonstrated interesting applications based on this sensor, such as tactile sensing and air-pressure sensing, which show great promise for wireless mechanical perception.
