Digital light processing printed hydrogel scaffolds with adjustable modulus

Xu Feng,Jin Hang,Wu Huiquan,Jiang Acan,Qiu Bin,Liu Lingling,Gao Qiang,Lin Bin,Kong Weiwei,Chen Songyue,Sun Daoheng

Hydrogels are extensively explored as biomaterials for tissue scaffolds, and their controlled fabrication has been the subject of wide investigation. However, the tedious mechanical property adjusting process through formula control hindered their application for diverse tissue scaffolds. To overcome this limitation, we proposed a two-step process to realize simple adjustment of mechanical modulus over a broad range, by combining digital light processing (DLP) and post-processing steps. UV-curable hydrogels (polyacrylamide-alginate) are 3D printed via DLP, with the ability to create complex 3D patterns. Subsequent post-processing with Fe 3+ ions bath induces secondary crosslinking of hydrogel scaffolds, tuning the modulus as required through soaking in solutions with different Fe 3+ concentrations. This innovative two-step process offers high-precision (10 μm) and broad modulus adjusting capability (15.8–345 kPa), covering a broad range of tissues in the human body. As a practical demonstration, hydrogel scaffolds with tissue-mimicking patterns were printed for cultivating cardiac tissue and vascular scaffolds, which can effectively support tissue growth and induce tissue morphologies.

Photosensitive poly(o-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine)-b-PEO polypeptide copolymers: synthesis, multiple self-assembly behaviors, and the photo/pH-thermo-sensitive hydrogels

Pan Li,Jiacheng Zhang,Chang-Ming Dong

A photoresponsive poly(o-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine)-b-PEO (PNBL-b-PEO) polypeptide copolymer was synthesized and its photosensitive cleavage and self-assembly were monitored by means of UV-vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR, DLS, and TEM. Three kinds of dual-sensitive (i.e., photo/pH-thermo) polypeptide normal and reverse micellar hydrogels were then fabricated by the physical cross-linking of the self-assembled micelles. Utilizing the inclusion complexation between α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and PEO of the normal micelles of PNBL-b-PEO or polylysine-b-PEO, photo/pH-thermo-sensitive normal micellar hydrogels were fabricated; in contrast, the reverse micelles of polylysine-b-PEO@α-CD self-assembled at pH = 3 and then were transformed into a pH-thermo-sensitive reverse micellar hydrogel at pH = 10. The multiple self-assembly and hydrogel properties were thoroughly characterized by means of UV-vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), DLS, zeta potential, rheology, TEM, and SEM. Notably, these dual-sensitive polypeptide hydrogels with a higher mechanical modulus (10–105 kPa) were facilely constructed and the mechanical modulus can be further tuned by varying the UV-irradiation time, the amount of α-CD added, and the copolymer concentration. Consequently, this work provides a versatile platform for constructing polypeptide copolymer hydrogels with tunable mechanical and stimuli-sensitive properties.

Nanoporous Aramid Nanofiber Separators with High Modulus and Thermal Stability for Safe Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shaopeng Liu,Sha Cheng,Cheng Huang,Jin Han,Jingjing Xie,Pengchao Zhang,Ya You,Wen Chen,Zhengyi Fu

Developing high-safety separators is a promising strategy to prevent thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which stems from the low melting temperatures and inadequate modulus of commercial polyolefin separators. However, achieving high modulus and thermal stability, along with uniform nanopores in these separators, poses significant challenges. Herein, the study presents ultrathin nanoporous aramid nanofiber (ANF) separators with high modulus and excellent thermal stability, enhancing the safety of LIBs. These separators are produced using a microfluidic-based continuous printing strategy, where the flow thickness can be meticulously controlled at the micrometer scale. This method allows for the continuous fabrication of nanoporous ANF separators with thicknesses ranging from 1.6 ± 0.1 µm to 2.7 ± 0.1 µm. Thanks to the double-side solvent diffusion, the separators exhibit controllably uniform pore sizes with a narrow distribution, spanning from 40 ± 5 nm to 105 ± 9 nm, and a high modulus of 3.3 ± 0.5 GPa. These nanoporous ANF separators effectively inhibit lithium dendrite formation, resulting in a high-capacity retention rate for the LIBs (80% after 240 cycles). Most notably, their robust structural and mechanical stability at elevated temperatures significantly enhances LIB safety under transient thermal abuse conditions, thus addressing critical safety concerns associated with LIBs.

Wood-inspired anisotropic hydrogel electrolyte with large modulus and low tortuosity realizing durable dendrite-free zinc-ion batteries

Jizhang Chen,Minfeng Chen,Hongli Chen,Ming Yang,Xiang Han,Dingtao Ma,Peixin Zhang,Ching-Ping Wong

While aqueous zinc-ion batteries exhibit great potential, their performance is impeded by zinc dendrites. Existing literature has proposed the use of hydrogel electrolytes to ameliorate this issue. Nevertheless, the mechanical attributes of hydrogel electrolytes, particularly their modulus, are suboptimal, primarily ascribed to the substantial water content. This drawback would severely restrict the dendrite-inhibiting efficacy, especially under large mass loadings of active materials. Inspired by the structural characteristics of wood, this study endeavors to fabricate the anisotropic carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel electrolyte through directional freezing, salting-out effect, and compression reinforcement, aiming to maximize the modulus along the direction perpendicular to the electrode surface. The heightened modulus concurrently serves to suppress the vertical deposition of the intermediate product at the cathode. Meanwhile, the oriented channels with low tortuosity enabled by the anisotropic structure are beneficial to the ionic transport between the anode and cathode. Comparative analysis with an isotropic hydrogel sample reveals a marked enhancement in both modulus and ionic conductivity in the anisotropic hydrogel. This enhancement contributes to significantly improved zinc stripping/plating reversibility and mitigated electrochemical polarization. Additionally, a durable quasi-solid-state Zn//MnO2 battery with noteworthy volumetric energy density is realized. This study offers unique perspectives for designing hydrogel electrolytes and augmenting battery performance.

High-Performance Solid Polymer Electrolytes Filled with Vertically Aligned 2D Materials

Wenjing Tang,Shan Tang,Xuze Guan,Xinyue Zhang,Qian Xiang,Jiayan Luo

Solid state lithium metal batteries are the most promising next-generation power sources owing to their high energy density and safety. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) have gained wide attention due to the excellent flexibility, manufacturability, lightweight, and low-cost processing. However, fatal drawbacks of the SPE such as the insufficient ionic conductivity and Li + transference number at room temperature restrict their practical application. Here vertically aligned 2D sheets are demonstrated as an advanced filler for SPE with enhanced ionic conductivity, Li + transference number, mechanical modulus, and electrochemical stability, using vermiculite nanosheets as an example. The vertically aligned vermiculite sheets (VAVS), prepared by the temperature gradient freezing, provide aligned, continuous, run-through polymer-filler interfaces after infiltrating with polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based SPE. As a result, ionic conductivity as high as 1.89 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C is achieved with Li + transference number close to 0.5. Along with their enhanced mechanical strength, Li|Li symmetric cells using VAVS–CSPE are stable over 1300 h with a low overpotential. LiFePO 4 in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries with VAVS–CSPE could deliver a specific capacity of 167 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C at 35 °C and 82% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.5 C.

Size-Controlled Talc Nanosheet Ionogel Electrolytes for Dendrite Suppression in Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries

Yuxing Gu,Yair Ein-Eli,Woo Jin Hyun

Ionogels composed of solid matrices and ionic liquids are promising candidates as solid-state electrolytes for sodium (Na) metal batteries due to their nonflammability, high thermal stability, and desirable electrochemical and interfacial properties. Among various solid matrices, nanoscale materials are particularly attractive for increasing the mechanical modulus of ionogel electrolytes, contributing to the suppression of Na dendrite growth on metal anodes. However, the mechanistic understanding of this suppression remains limited. Here, size-controlled talc nanosheets are introduced as solid matrices to investigate their influence on the ionogel modulus and the corresponding Na dendrite growth behavior, facilitating the rational design of ionogel electrolytes for dendrite suppression. Talc nanosheets with reduced lateral dimensions and thicknesses provide larger surface areas, enhancing the ionogel modulus through stronger immobilization of ionic liquids. High-modulus ionogels with smaller nanosheets promote uniform Na deposition and reinforce the resistance of the electrolytes to vertical Na dendrite growth. Moreover, smaller talc nanosheets improve the Na-ion transference number of ionogel electrolytes. The resulting talc nanosheet ionogel electrolytes enable Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 |Na cells to exhibit favorable rate capability at room temperature with capacity retention over 99% after 500 cycles at a rate of 0.5 C.

Sandwich-structural ionogel electrolyte with core–shell ionic-conducting nanocomposites for stable Li metal battery

Caohua He,Jianqi Sun,Chengyi Hou,Qinghong Zhang,Yaogang Li,Kerui Li,Hongzhi Wang

Ionogel electrolytes (IGEs) containing ionic liquids as the unique liquid component can guarantee high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and high thermal stability simultaneously for developing stable and safe Li metal batteries, yet suffer from relatively low Li + transference. In this work, ceramic ionic conductor-metal organic framework (MOF) core–shell nanocomposites are introduced as active matrix to fabricate a reinforcement layer with a high mechanical modulus. The ceramic core provides Li + conduction pathway and the MOF shell possesses open pores and metal sites for ionic selectivity. Beyond this, the reinforcement layer is sandwiched by two buffer layers with a flexible polymer matrix to improve the interface compatibility and wettability with electrodes. Here, the nanocomposites powder can be synthesized through solid sintering followed by facile in-situ solution growth, promising the scalable production and practical application of the IGEs. As a result, the sandwich-structural IGE shows a high ionic conductivity of 3.87 × 10 −4  S cm −1 at 25 ℃, wide electrochemical window (up to 5.2 V vs Li/Li + ), and high thermal stability. The full cell (LiCoO 2 cathode) maintains 97.9 % capacity after 500 cycles at 0.2 C.

Osteogenesis regulation of mesenchymal stem cells via autophagy induced by silica–titanium composite surfaces with different mechanical moduli

Maowen Chen,Yan Hu,Yanhua Hou,Menghuan Li,Maohua Chen,Lu Tan,Caiyun Mu,Bailong Tao,Zhong Luo,Kaiyong Cai

The high surface elastic modulus of the titanium (Ti) implant is one of the critical factors causing poor osteointegration between the implant surface and surrounding bone tissue. To address this challenge, spherical silica nanoparticles (SSNs) and spherical titania nanoparticles (STNs) with different sizes were synthesized and embedded into Ti surfaces via a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. There were no significant changes in the surface roughness and protein adsorption behaviors before and after the embedding of spherical silica nanoparticles and titania nanoparticles into the Ti implant. However, the surface elastic modulus of Ti-SSNs decreased from 93 GPa to 6.7 GPa, while there was still no change in surface elastic modulus between Ti and Ti-STN groups. In vitro experiments showed that Ti-SSNs, especially Ti-SSN3, significantly stimulated the expression level and nuclear localization of the transcription factor YAP. YAP/TAZ could further inhibit the phosphorylation of AKT and mTOR proteins in MSCs, leading to higher LC3-II protein expression and osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. Ti-SSNs also showed a higher level of autophagosome formation, ALP activity and mineralization capability compared to the other groups. Our results showed that the surface elasticity modulus of an implant plays an important role in the regulation of MSC behaviors. Therefore, designing an implant with an optimal elastic modulus at the surface might have great clinical potential in the bone repair field.

Insight into Superior Electrochemical Performance of 4.5 V High-Voltage LiCoO2 Using a Robust Polyacrylonitrile Binder

Yang Chen,Shujian Liu,Shaokai Cheng,Shuyu Gao,Jingchao Chai,Qiuyue Jiang,Zhihong Liu,Xueqing Liu,Jiyan Liu,Ming Xie,Wubin Dai

The polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) binder is the classic binder for cathodes because of its excellent electrochemical stability and superior adhesion property. However, PVdF is very expensive and sensitive to moisture. Therefore, pursuit of a cost-effective binder is highly desirable, especially for high-voltage cathode application. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) possesses strong polar C≡N groups, endowing it with oxidation resistance and strong binding properties. Herein, the PAN binder was systematically investigated for the electrochemical performance of the 4.5 V high-voltage LiCoO2 (HV-LCO) electrode. The results showed that the HV-LCO-PAN electrode delivered superior rate capability and cycling stability to the corresponding HV-LCO-PVdF. The PAN binder was highly tolerant of moisture and was capable of forming uniform coating on the cathode materials. Moreover, the PAN binder had ultrahigh mechanical modulus (8.01 GPa) and hardness (381.45 MPa) in a liquid electrolyte, thereby improving cycling stability and rate capability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further demonstrated that PAN formed uniform coating on the surface of LiCoO2 and played a role of an artificial cathode–electrolyte interphase layer, suppressing decomposition of the liquid electrolyte under high cutoff voltage.

Multi-Material Digital Light Processing (DLP) Bioprinting of Heterogeneous Hydrogel Constructs with Perfusable Networks

Ming Yang,Lang Chu,Yanfeng Zhuang,Cheng Qi,Si Meng,Zhou Liu,Tiantian Kong

The challenges of replicating the complex mechanical and structural diversity of natural tissues in vitro by leveraging multi-material digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting are addressed. This technique utilizes PEGDA-AAm bio-ink to develop multi-component, cell-laden hydrogel constructs with varying moduli. These constructs not only possess heterogeneous mechanical properties but also feature complex architectures and precisely engineered surface microstructures. The hydrogel microfluidic chips are successfully fabricated with perfusable microchannels, embedding various cell types within the matrix. This approach enables the bioprinting of intricate cell-laden structures with unique surface topologies, such as spiral grooves and triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS), which effectively influence cell alignment, spreading, and migration. By integrating various cell-laden PA hydrogels, the diverse mechanical moduli of biological tissues, including bone, liver lobules, and vascular networks are replicated. This technique ensures high-fidelity differentiation between cell types and regions. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of substrate modulus and structure on cell behavior, underscoring the potential of multi-component, multi-modulus hydrogel constructs in creating sophisticated structures with custom-tailored mechanical properties. This study significantly advances the field by demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of multi-material DLP bioprinting in developing complex, functionally relevant tissue models for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
