Effect of the slurry composition on the piezoelectric properties of PZT ceramics fabricated via materials extrusion 3D printing

Kai Liu,Yuhang Xia,Qingqing Zhang,Yanying Du,Yusheng Shi,Sanjay Joshi,Chunze Yan,Yanjiao Wu,Shangyu Huang,Huajun Sun

Herein, the effect of the binder content in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) slurry has been systematically studied to improve the piezoelectric properties of PZT ceramics prepared via material extrusion 3D printing . For smooth printing, a slurry with a binder concentration ranging from 6 to 12 wt% was proposed. The porosity of the green body first decreased and then increased with an increase in the binder concentration, and the minimum porosity was obtained when the binder concentration reached 10 wt%. Samples with increased density were obtained after debinding and lead-rich atmosphere sintering. PZT piezoceramics fabricated using a binder content of 10 wt% exhibit the maximum relative density (96.9%), largest piezoelectric constant (342.6 pC/N) and dielectric constant (1621). Based on the above process, the wood pile structure and helical twentytetrahedral structural components were successfully fabricated using the material extrusion process. This research lays the foundation for the engineering application of 3D printing to fabricate high-performance piezoceramics with complex shapes.

Additive manufacturing of continuous carbon fiber–reinforced silicon carbide ceramic composites

Kai Liu,Lei Qiu,Yuzhen Zhang,Yanying Du,Ce Sun,Song Zhang,Rong Tu,Yanjiao Wu,Huajun Sun,Yusheng Shi

A material extrusion (MEX) technology has been developed for the additive manufacturing of continuous carbon fiber–reinforced silicon carbide ceramic (C f /SiC) composites. By comparing and analyzing the rheological properties of the slurries with different compositions, a slurry with a high solid loading of 48.1 vol% and high viscosity was proposed. Furthermore, several complex structures of C f /SiC ceramic composites were printed by this MEX additive manufacturing technique. Phenolic resin impregnation–carbonization process reduces the apparent porosity of the green body and protects the C f . Finally, the reactive melting infiltration (RMI) process was used to prepare samples with different C f contents from 0 to 2 K (a bundle of carbon fibers consisting of 1000 fibers). Samples with C f content of 1 K show the highest bending strength (161.6 ± 10.5 MPa) and fracture toughness (3.72 ± 0.11 MPa·m 1/2 ) while the thermal conductivity of the samples with the C f content of 1 K reached 11.0 W/(m·K). This study provides a strategy to prepare C f /SiC composites via MEX additive manufacturing and RMI.

Large-size Si3N4 ceramic fabricated by additive manufacturing using long-term stable hydrogel-based suspensions

Yitian Yang,Zhihua Yang,Xiaoming Duan,Peigang He,Delong Cai,Dechang Jia,Yu Zhou

Additive manufacturing of ceramic materials has gained the significant attention due to its ability to flexibly fabricate customizable ceramics with complex structures. However, large-size advanced ceramics are still difficult to be fabricated by additive manufacturing, especially for the thin-wall structures. Here, a strategy for fabricating large-size Si 3 N 4 ceramic via the materials extrusion process using the long-term stable hydrogel-based suspensions is reported. We establish a mechanism to analyze the rheology relation between the ceramic suspensions and the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogels. The deformation of filaments under gravity is simulated by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, further the effects of the shear-thinning behavior close to the filament surface and the evaporation rate for suspensions with different solid content on the final shape of the filaments are investigated. We finally printed a single-wall cone component with a height of 180 mm, a diameter of 90 mm, and a wall thickness of 1.8 mm by the suspension containing a pseudoplastic CMC hydrogel.

Material extrusion-based additive manufacturing of zirconia toughened alumina: Machinability, mechanical properties and biocompatibility

Tianyu Yu,Xiaolong Zhu,Hongwei Yu,Pan Wu,Chun Li,Xiaoxiao Han,Mingjun Chen

Material extrusion-based additive manufacturing (MEAM) has gained significant attention due to its versatile flexibility for fabricating a broad range of materials. In this study, fabrication of dense zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics with micro/nano powders of excellent mechanical and biological properties was investigated. The ZTA paste rheology was engineered to achieve appropriate rheological behavior . A novel machining scheme on MEAM produced ZTA green parts using CNC milling and high precision micro-milling was studied to investigate their effect on surface integrity and geometric accuracy . The MEAM produced ZTA ceramics show the highest relative density, Vickers hardness, bending strength, and fracture toughness of 99 %, 17.7 GPa, 422.5 MPa, and 6.2 MPa*m 1/2 , respectively. Biocompatibility of fabricated ZTA ceramics with different size of powders was investigated including cell adhesion, cell toxicity and cell proliferation, showing a good potential in biomedical usage. This framework provides a unique pathway for MEAM of ZTA ceramics to combine design and manufacturing freedom, multifunctionality , stability, and economical simultaneously.

Combining material extrusion and in-situ reaction bonding technique for fabricating light and strong hierarchical porous mullite-bonded SiC structures

Shihao Sun,Qian Xia,Zikang Li,Shuhan Wang,Ziru Pei,Yichen Xu,Hongqiang Ru

Novel light and strong hierarchical porous mullite-bonded SiC structures with total porosity ranging from 68 % to 95 % were fabricated by combining material extrusion (MEX) and in-situ reaction bonding technique. These structures comprise three porosity families and wide porosity hierarchization over four orders of magnitude in length scales. The pore parameters were precisely controlled by the nozzle path and starch (as a poreforming agent) content. The sintering temperature effect on phase composition, porosity, sintering shrinkage, and mechanical properties was systematically investigated. As the SiC powders were sintered at 1550 °C, they were compactly bonded by mullite and cristobalite necks. The single filaments demonstrated a flexural strength of 74 MPa at a porosity of 35 %. The hierarchical porous mullite-bonded SiC lattice structure with a total porosity of 69 % was near-net-shape sintered and exhibited a compressive strength as high as 41 MPa. Such structures are highly promising for wide applications such as electromagnetic shielding, burners, membrane supports, porous burners, filters, thermal insulation , catalyst supports, etc.
