Poplar wood samples (2×2×2 cm 3 ) were vacuum/pressure impregnated in alcoholic solution with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 3-(methacryloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MAPTES) in a mass ratio of 3/1 in the presence of catalytic amounts of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). Because of their good solubility and permeability, the HEMA/MAPTES precursors evenly penetrate the poplar cell wall. The impregnated samples were heated at 75°C for 8 h, followed by a heating period at 103±2°C for 8 h, in the course of which an in situ polymerization occurred in the cell wall. The modified wood was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the dimensional stability of the modified wood was measured and found to be considerably improved.

The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is important for efficient bioethanol conversion, but causes undesirable by-products that inhibit microbial growth, conversely affecting the bioconversion efficiency. In this study, the main inhibitors derived from dilute phosphoric acid plus steam-exploded poplar wood were identified as 0.22 g/L furfural, 3.63 g/L acetic acid, 0.08 g/L syringaldehyde, etc., indicating the green nature and low toxicity of the pretreatment process. The effects of the three typical inhibitors (furfural, acetic acid, and syringaldehyde) onSaccharomyces cerevisiae1517RM growth were analyzed and shown to prolong the lag phase of microbial growth to different degrees. In all the inhibitor groups, the ergosterol secretion was boosted, indicating low cell membrane fluidity and robustness of the strain to an adverse environment. The cell electronegativity and morphology ofS. cerevisiae1517RM also changed under different growth conditions, which was helpful for monitoring the physicochemical properties of cells. Furfural, acetic acid, and syringaldehyde had a synergistic effect on each other, providing an important reference to improving the subsequent ethanol fermentation process. Keywords:inhibitors;Saccharomyces cerevisiae;growth;steam explosion;poplar

Abstract Two types of nanocellulose (cellulose nanocrystals—CNCs and cellulose nanofibrils—CNFs) were isolated from two biomass resources. The morphology, crystallinity and thermal stability of the nanocelluloses were systematically compared in this paper. CNCs derived from rice straw (CNC-Rs) and poplar wood (CNC-Ps) by sulfuric acid hydrolysis had short rod-shaped structures and average diameters of 9.1 nm for CNC-Rs and 11.4 nm for CNC-Ps. CNFs derived from rice straw (CNF-Rs) and poplar wood (CNF-Ps) by grinding had web-network structures and average diameters of 13.3 nm for CNF-Rs and 18.5 nm for CNF-Ps. After freeze-drying, the CNCs and CNFs retained their nano structures. CNFs and CNC-Ps consisted of the typically pure cellulose I , while CNC-Rs consisted of cellulose I and II . The CrI of the nanocellulose followed the order of CNC-Ps (72.9%) > CNC-Rs (68.0%) > CNF-Ps (56.4%) > CNF-Rs (54.4%). The thermal stability of the nanocellulose was correlated with their source biomass materials and preparation method, which led to the differences in their dimensions, crystallinity, and sulfate groups. Nanocellulose isolated from poplar wood showed the slightly higher thermal stability than that of nanocellulose from rice straw. CNFs exhibited the higher thermal stability than that of CNCs. The apparent activation energy ( E ) was calculated to evaluate the degradation process. The nanocellulose had E of 85.17–101.98 kJ/mol for CNCs and 94.92–108.76 kJ/mol for CNFs. Graphic abstract

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Industrial heavy metal-contaminated wastewater is one of the main water pollution problems. Adsorbents are a promising method for the removal of heavy metal contaminants. Herein, polyaspartic acid/carboxymethyl poplar sawdust hydrogels (PASP/CMPP) and ascorbic acid/carboxymethyl poplar sawdust hydrogels (VC/CMPP) were prepared by aqueous polymerization using alkalized poplar sawdust (CMPP) as the substrate and PASP and vitamin C (VC) as modifiers. The effective results, provided by the characterization analysis of SEM and BET, indicate that the surface of the PASP/CMPP hydrogel has a larger number of loose pores and a larger pore volume than the VC/CMPP hydrogel. The treatment effects of the two hydrogels on simulated wastewater containing Cd(II) were investigated by a batch of experiments. The results showed that PASP/CMPP had a better adsorption effect than VC/CMPP under the same adsorption conditions. Interestingly, the solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms. The sorption kinetic curves of Cd(II) on PASP/CMPP were well-fitted by the quasi-second-order kinetics under different adsorbent concentrations. The adsorption conforms to Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. More importantly, PASP/CMPP composites are expected to be used as a new kind of environmental adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Hydrogels of PASP/CMPP were prepared. The hydrogels of PASP/CMPP exhibit enhanced sorption capacities for Cd(II). The hydrogels of PASP/CMPP are potential sorbents for wastewater treatment. The solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms. The synthesis of PASP/CMPP hydrogels provides a win-win strategy.

This study investigated the application risk and value of Cd-enriched poplar wood, focusing on its wood properties, leaching characteristics, and brown rot resistance. The results indicated that Cd deposition in cell walls significantly inhibited brown rot fungi, thereby enhancing decay resistance. Furthermore, the extent of improvement in brown rot resistance was linked to wood density: the higher the density of Cd-enriched poplar wood, the stronger its resistance to brown rot. As the Cd concentration increased, the Cd distribution abundance and the wood crystallinity gradually increased. Structural changes were observed, including fluctuating microfibril angle and double wall thickness of fibers and vessels. Cd concentrations exceeding 50 mg/kg altered the chemical composition of the cell walls. The binding form of Cd in wood cell wall showed a trend of bound Cd > free Cd > residual Cd. Cd leaching occurred under cyclic soaking in water, which may lead to secondary contamination. However, under the condition of 75 % relative humidity, Cd leaching was negligible, suggesting potential for safer use in controlled environments. These findings provide valuable insights into the management and application of Cd-enriched wood, especially in contexts where decay resistance is critical or in water-exposed environments.

Fast-growing poplar with the dominant characteristic of short rotation plantation offers a potential solution to the growing market demand for wood. However, its practical applications are limited due to shortcomings such as high flammability and poor dimensional stability. To address these issues, this study introduced a facile impregnation process involving the in-situ polymerization of bio-based furfuryl alcohol (FA) and ammonium phytate (AMP) to enhance the flame retardancy and dimensional stability of poplar. The biomass content was higher than 95% for this impregnation solution. The thermal stability experiments revealed that the residual char mass of AMP/FA-wood at 800°C increased by 305% compared to unmodified poplar. Moreover, the AMP/FA-wood demonstrated superior flame retardancy, achieving UL-94 V-0 rating and a high limiting oxygen index of 36.3%. Additionally, it exhibited decreased heat release and total smoke production of 48.9% and 79.8%, respectively, in comparison to unmodified poplar wood . The impressive flame retardancy of AMP/FA-wood was ascribed to the incorporation of AMP through the nitrogen-phosphorus synergistic intumescent mechanism. Notably, the in-situ polymerization of FA during the modification process, the AMP/FA-wood displayed exceptional dimensional stability which was confirmed by the moisture content , anti-swelling efficiency, and water absorption tests. Hence, AMP/FA-wood with its excellent flame retardancy, thermal stability, and dimensional stability, holds promise as a reliable wood supply for various applications such as furniture, home decor, construction, and building.

Autohydrolysis of wood chips prior to separating lignin and cellulose is an effective method to pre-extract hemicelluloses, where the change of the structure and chemical composition in the hydrolyzed wood chips inevitably impact the subsequent separation efficiency of the remaining components. In this work, autohydrolysis of poplar wood chips under different intensity was carried out, and the relationships between the chemical/physical changes in the hydrolyzed wood chips and the accessibility of remaining components was evaluated. The results indicated that the removal of most hemicelluloses and minor lignin increased the porosity, specific surface area, and internal hydrophilicity of the wood chips, enhancing the accessibility of wood components to alkali solution as well as the diffusion of the alkali-soluble substance outward. The hydrophobic lignin or lignin-like substance accumulated on the surface of the wood chips could rapidly dissolve into the alkali solution, thus, having no adverse effect on the permeation of alkali solution into the wood chips, although they might create a barrier blocking the passage of water penetration.

This paper presents experimental research on the flame-retardant properties and thermal decomposition kinetics of wood treated by boric-acid-modified silica sol. The poplar wood was impregnated with pure silica sol and boric-acid-modified silica sol. The results showed that modifiers can be observed in the cell wall and cell lumen. The ignition time, second peak of the heat release rate, total heat release, and mass loss of the W-Si/B were delayed obviously. The composite silicon modification had a positive impact on carbonization. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the residual mass of W-Si/B was enhanced and the thermal degradation rate was considerably decreased. By thermal decomposition kinetics analysis, the boric acid can catalyze the thermal degradation and carbonization of poplar wood. In other words, wood treated with boric-acid-modified silica sol showed significant improvement in terms of flame retardancy, compared with wood treated with common silica sol. Keywords:poplar wood;silica sol;boric acid;cone calorimetric;decomposition kinetics

The introduction of specific choline chloride (ChCl)- and betaine (Bet)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) into the conventional acetic acid–sodium acetate solution led to a significant increase in cellulase activity and stability. In particular, a higher enhancement in β-glucosidase activity was obtained, which plays a key role in improving cellulase function. The DESs prolonged the half-life of cellulase. The addition of 10 % (v/v) ChCl/1,3-propanediol (1:2) and 5 % (v/v) Bet/glycerol (1:2) resulted in the most significant improvement, with the half-life of cellulase reaching three times the initial half-life value. The above both DESs allowed the cellulase to maintain an excellent level of activity over time, even after 72 h. The DESs tightened the structure of the enzyme by changing its secondary structure, which had a stabilizing effect on the overall conformation. The density functional theory calculations of DESs revealed that the DES with a more stable structure more effectively protected the active conformation. The molecular dynamics simulation on β-glucosidase indicated that the hydrogen bond donor end of the DES primarily formed hydrogen bonds with the enzyme, which induced a spatially compact conformation by increasing the α-helix content while reducing the β-sheet content. It also restricted the movement of amino acids, particularly stabilizing the active site, and increased the hydrophilic region, thereby enhancing enzyme activity and stability. In addition, the DES formed a protective layer that prevented the unproductive adsorption of lignin on the enzymes during the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic feedstocks. These multiple improvements provided by DESs significantly increased the enzymatic saccharification efficiency of corn stover and poplar .

By exploiting cellulose nanofibril's high aspect ratio and nano-order-unit interconnected web-like structure of poplar wood, a new approach was designed. Steam explosion was used for the pretreatment of the poplar, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis assisted sonication for the preparation of nanocellulose. The effects the cellulase dosage, enzymatic hydrolysis time and temperature on the yield of nanocellulose were studied. Under optimal conditions nanocellulose yield was approximately 13.2%. The chemical composition, crystallinity, and morphology of the composites were characterised using FT-IR, x-ray diffraction and TEM. The results demonstrated that the structure was not destroyed during the preparation process, that the crystal form remained cellulose I, and the crystallinity was 61.98%, 9.15% higher than that of poplar cellulose. The width was between 20 and 50 nm, with high aspect ratio and a web-like entangled structure. Therefore, nanocellulose prepared using this method is an ideal toughening material that could be applied in composite materials.

A cost-efficient methodology was developed for a two-step removal of hemicellulose from lignocellulosic biomass, thereby yielding C5 sugars, further separated residue, and high purity cellulose as well as lignin. In the first step of the process, an oxalic acid (OA)-assisted hydrolysis pretreatment was conducted for the selective decomposition of hemicellulose to C5 sugars. The optimized process conditions were as follows: temperature: 160 °C, OA concentration: 1%, holding time: 10 min. Under these conditions, various monosaccharides and other intermediates were obtained and more than 98.32% of the hemicellulose was removed from the original poplar. In the second step of the process, to extract lignin, a low concentration of sulfuric acid was used as a catalyst during the treatment of samples in a γ-valerolactone/H2O system; more than 91.57% lignin was removed, 82.99% cellulose was retained in the solid cellulose-rich substrates, and 94.45% (i.e., high-purity) cellulose was obtained. This method can be used for efficient fractionation of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin with the aim of achieving high value utilization of the entire biomass.

The structure of wood poses significant challenges for Chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) pulping process, particularly in achieving efficient chemical penetration and uniform distribution within woodchips. While alkali pre-impregnation is known to enhance pulp bleachability, this work advances prior work by systematically correlating lignin’s structural evolution under optimized pretreatment conditions with the bleaching performance of poplar woodchips (PWCs)-derived CTMP. The results show that the content of the main linkages, e.g. , β - O -4 and β - β , in lignin were significantly reduced 29.58 % and 21.00 %, respectively, after alkali pre-impregnation, and the number of aromatic regions including guaiacyl (G), syringyl (S) and para-coumaric acid ester (PCE) units reduced, confirming the partial depolymerization of lignin. The optimum pre-impregnation conditions, including 6 % alkali charge at 70 °C for 30 min, were beneficial to achieving a satisfied pulp brightness (74.73 % ISO). This work would highlight the critical role of alkali pre-impregnation techniques in CTMP pulping and bleaching processes.
