This study investigated 17 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the surface sediments of Hangzhou Bay and the East China Sea. The mean concentration of ∑OPEs in Hangzhou Bay (235.3 ng/g) was slightly lower than that in the East China Sea (273.5 ng/g), with detected analytes dominated by Diethyl phosphate, Tris(2-chloropropyl) phosphate, and Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate. Based on principal component analysis and cluster analysis for the source apportionment of OPEs, the results indicated that the high levels of OPEs in the East China Sea close to Yangtze River estuary can be attributed to a significant large-scale OPEs production site located along the southern Yellow Sea and the western coast of the East China Sea. Furthermore, the risk assessment conducted on aquatic organisms indicated the non-ecological risk of OPEs. However, future research should focus on the potential composite impacts of OPEs on the water systems and human health.
Emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments pose significant risks to biodiversity and ecosystem health, and have garnered widespread attention. The risk ranking and identifying priority control ECs are of crucial for effective water quality management. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of 102 ECs in the surface water of the Yangtze River estuary and Hangzhou Bay, and conducted risk assessments and priority identification using toxicity-weighted concentration (TWC) and the toxicological priority index (ToxPi). 88 ECs were detected by target analysis, including 42 antibiotics (ANTs), 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 14 organochlorine pesticides (OPs), 4 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), 3 hexabromododecanes (HBCDs), 6 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) sample and 2 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Risk assessment based on the TWC scheme revealed that 5 ANTs and 4 PAHs posed high risks to aquatic organisms (TWC > 1.0). The ToxPi method effectively integrated detection frequency, concentration, toxicity data, and TWC, providing a ranked list and identifying 12 ECs (5 ANTs, 4 PAHs and 3 OPs) as high priority. This study conducted ecological risk assessment and priority screening of ECs in the Yangtze River estuary and Hangzhou Bay, providing important information for effective management and priority control of ECs.
A field, light-weight laser fluorometer based on the method of laser induced fluorescence was developed for water quality monitoring. The basic instrument configuration uses a high pulse repetition frequency microchip laser, a confocal reflective fluorescent probe and a broadband hyperspectral micro spectrometer; it weights only about 1.7 kg. Simultaneous estimates of three important water quality parameters, namely, chlorophyll a (chl-a), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and total suspended matter (TSM) measured by the laser fluorometer were observed to agree well with those measured by traditional methods (0.27–0.84 μg L −3 chl-a, R 2 = 0.88; 0.104–0.295 m − 1 CDOM absorption, R 2 = 0.90; and 59.8–994.9 mg L − 3 TSM, R 2 = 0.86) in Hangzhou Bay water. Subsequently, distribution and characteristics of CDOM and chl-a laser fluorescence in Hangzhou Bay were analyzed, which will enhance our understanding of biogeochemical processes in this complex estuarine system at high-resolution, high-frequency and long-term scale.
