With deeper understanding of the harm of ultraviolet (UV) ray radiation , more and more attentions have been paid on developing UV shielding agents with better price-quality ratio. In this article, TiO₂ nanorods with three types of crystalline structures (anatase, brookite, and rutile) and their composites with natural illites were prepared by hydrothermal method under appropriate glycolic acid and pH environment. The resultant samples were analyzed by XRD , SEM , XPS , TEM, UV–vis spectrum and UV aging testing. The results confirm that both the aspect ratio and the crystalline structures of TiO₂ nanorods greatly affect the UV shielding performances of TiO₂ films. Compared with anatase and brookite, rutile TiO₂ nanorods with the best aspect ratio (around 3.5) display the best UV shielding performance. Furthermore, after loaded by natural illite micro-sheets, the illite-TiO 2 composites display better UV shielding performance than pure TiO₂ nanorods , due to the physical reflection effect and interfacial coupling effect of illite micro-sheets. When the loading amount ratio reaches to 1:1, the illite-TiO 2 composite loaded with rutile TiO₂ nanorods display the best UV shielding performance. And such coating is confirmed to be greatly helpful in protecting cotton fabrics from fractures caused by UV aging. The best illite-TiO 2 composite can significantly increases the retention tensile strength of cotton fabrics by 47 % against UV radiation . The resultant novel illite-TiO 2 composite provides a promising method to product better UV shielding agents for practical applications, which displays lower cost, nearly non-toxic, better aqueous dispersion, controlled UV–vis spectral characteristics , and higher UV shielding performances.

Solar reforming cellulosic biomass into hydrogen is a promising approach for sustainable biomass waste utilization and renewable energy development. To overcome the challenge of depolymerization of rigid cellulose in mild conditions, a strategy that combines enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose with photocatalytic H 2 production from water under mild conditions has been proposed. Specifically, porous carbon doped brookite/anatase heterophase titania as a representative photocatalyst has been synthesized by an easy self-assembly and growth approach. The typical characteristics of porous structure , carbon doping as well as heterojunction formation of the prepared photocatalyst result from the self−assembled crystallization and low temperature annealing processes , and the special structural effects on the improved photochemical behavior were investigated through a series of characterizations. The synthesized TiO 2 annealed at 200 °C (Meso-TiO 2 -200) presents remarkable H 2 production performance even without cocatalyst loading under UV light irradiation. Furthermore, the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose and raw biomass materials has been optimized in terms of reaction temperature, solution pH and types of enzyme to obtain higher yields of glucose. Lastly, the H 2 production from water employing with the Meso-TiO 2 -200 photocatalyst and enzymatic depolymerized products as sacrificial agents has been quantitively evaluated. The H 2 yields are about 56 μmol/g.cat (5 h) and 2965 μmol/g.cat (5 h) at pH 7 for Meso−TiO 2 −200 without or with 1.0 wt% Pt cocatalyst loading, significantly higher than that of the commercial P25 sample. Under the optimized condition, the apparent quantum efficiency under 365 ± 10 nm irradiation was about 1.95%, and the mechanism for the improved H 2 production has been proposed.

A heterophase junction TiO2 catalyst with brookite and anatase (MT-200-BA) was prepared via a facile one-step solvothermal method, based on the initial construction of the MIL-125(Ti) metal organic framework (MOF) precursor and subsequent structure transformation from the MOF precursor to brookite@anatase heterojunction TiO2. The fabricated catalysts have been fully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption, thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and various spectral and electrochemical tests. It was found that the unique nanostructure with a high specific surface area and large pore diameter, particularly brookite@anatase heterophase junctions and a narrow band gap make the MT-200-BA catalyst exhibit a significantly enhanced solar-driven H2 generation rate under air mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5 G), which is significantly higher than those of MIL-125(Ti), MT-180-MA and commercial P25. In addition, the MT-200-BA catalyst has also shown excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The synthesis strategy adopted in this paper paves a new way for the construction of novel photocatalysts with heterojunctions via phase transformation from MOFs.

Abstract In this study, an attempt is done to synthesize anatase/brookite/rutile TiO 2 nanocomposites via a simple solvothermal method with hydrochloric acid, dehydrated ethanol, and titanium butoxide in a sol−gel environment. The effect of preparation temperature on the content of each phase, crystallite size, morphology, and photocatalytic activity was systemically studied. The structures of the products prepared under different temperatures were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectra, and BET surface area. The optical properties were measured by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. Besides, the photocatalytic activities were evaluated by performing the degradation of rhodamine B azo dye under UV−vis radiation. The results reveal that the content of different phases and crystallite size can be tailored via tuning the solvothermal condition. In addition, the obtained TiO 2 nanocomposites are a kind of mesoporous materials and have large BET surface area, narrow pore size distribution, and low band gap, which exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance (of activity about 4.40 times that of Degussa TiO 2 P25). Through examining the photocatalytic stability, the obtained TiO 2 nanocomposites exhibit a very stable photocatalytic performance. Therefore, the current method to TiO 2 preparation could provide a simple and reliable route for developing photocatalytic materials with high photocatalytic activity. Graphical abstract

The present study is a part of continuing research efforts devoted to modifying nano titania by tailoring its structure for enhanced photocatalytic performances. The study concerns suspension plasma spray fabrication of black titanium dioxide coatings with porous microstructures and high photocatalytic activity. The black titania showed composite structure comprising anatase, rutile, metastable brookite, and Ti 2 O 3 with markedly narrowed band gap of 2.71 eV. Further TEM characterization revealed that formation of the black titania was associated with grain growth and with tremendous lattice disorders, which are predominately responsible for visible light absorption. Examination of photocatalytic performances of the black titania coatings showed enhanced absorption and degradation of methylene blue under visible light, giving inspiring insights into surface coating construction of black titania for photocatalytic applications.
