Efficient degradation and decolorization of triphenylmethane dyes by Serratia sp. WKD under extreme environmental conditions and the mechanism

Linna Du,Huan Wu,Gang Li,Yi Wei,Fei Wang,Ligen Xu,Xinjiao Dong

Microbial degradation of dyes is fundamental and essential for understanding their environmental fate . In this study, a new bacterial strain with efficient degrading capability of triphenylmethane (TPM) dyes named WKD was isolated and identified as the genus Serratia sp. by 16S rDNA analysis . The decolorization of TPM dyes by the strain especially under extreme environmental conditions were studied. The results showed that the strain could completely decolorize Malachite Green (MG) and Crystal Violet (CV) at pH values ranging from 3.0 to 10.0 and at temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 45 °C in a 12 h of incubation. The strain still showed an excellent decolorizing capability even at low (5 °C) and high (60 °C) temperatures. Moreover, the enzymatic analysis indicated that MnP, NADH-DCIP reductase, MG reductase, and CV reductase might be involved in TPM dyes biodegradation. Besides, the biodegradation pathways were proposed based on UV–visible, FTIR , and LC-Q-TOF-MS analyses. Results indicated that degradation of MG by the strain was mainly regulated by N-demethylation and hydroxylation pathways, while degradation of CV was only by the N-demethylation pathway. Therefore, Serratia sp. strain WKD is expected to have a broad application prospect for the bioremediation of TPM dyes, especially in extreme environments.

Ultra-high stretchability and wide temperature range adhesion hydrogels for flexible sensor

Zijian Gao,Shengyu Sun,Xin Guan,Yongqi Yang,Jian Sun,Hailun Ren,Zhaohui Jin

Ensuring adhesion over wide temperature range is of considerable significance for hydrogel-based wearable sensors, especially in extreme environments. In this research, a hydrogel with adhesive properties over a wide temperature range (−20–80°C) was prepared by copolymerizing 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylic acid (AAc), and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) in binary solvent of H 2 O and glycerol (Gly). Hence, the hydrogel acquires adhesive properties through the establishment of non-covalent interactions with the substrate surface, encompassing hydrogen bonding, metal complexation, and electrostatic interactions. At −20°C, ambient temperature (20°C), and 80°C, the hydrogel exhibits significant shear strength of 39.8, 74.3, and 46.9 kPa. In addition, chemical crosslinking points, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction are imparted with good mechanical properties to withstand large tensile and flexible deformation, achieving a fracture stress of 120 kPa and a strain of 14,288%. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibits outstanding electrical conductivity, reaching up to 1.58 S/m owing to a substantial concentration of free conductive ions. Moreover, this sensor is able to provide a constant and stable change in electrical resistance signal and is used to monitor human movement signals. This makes it possible to employ AAc/AMPS/H 2 O/Gly/LS hydrogels as wearable flexible sensors in extreme environments.

Hierarchical Porous Cellulosic Triboelectric Materials for Extreme Environmental Conditions

Jiamin Zhao,Wanglin Zhang,Tao Liu,Yanhua Liu,Ying Qin,Jilong Mo,Chenchen Cai,Song Zhang,Shuangxi Nie

Synthetic polymer materials such as paraformaldehyde and polyamides are widely used in the field of energy engineering. However, they pose a challenge to environmental sustainability because they are derived from petrochemicals that are non-renewable and difficult to degrade in the natural environment. The development of high-performance natural alternatives is clearly emerging as a promising mitigation option. Inspired by natural bamboo, this research reports a “three-step” strategy for the large-scale production of triboelectric materials with special nanostructures from natural bamboo. Benefiting from the special hierarchical porous structure of the material, Bamboo/polyaniline triboelectric materials can reach short-circuit current of 2.9 µA and output power of 1.1 W m –2 at a working area of only 1 cm 2 , which exceeds most wood fiber-based triboelectric materials. More importantly, it maintains 85% energy harvesting after an extreme environment of high temperature (200 °C), low temperature (−196 °C), combustion environment, and multiple thermal shocks (Δ T = 396 °C). This is unmatched by current synthetic polymer materials. This work provides new research ideas for the construction and application of biomass structural materials under extreme environmental conditions.

Multifunctional hierarchical electronic skins: Unveiling self-repairing mechanisms and advancements in sensing and shielding performance

Muchao Qu,Linzhi Hu,Shunyin Wang,Hongji Chen,Guanda Yang,Dirk W. Schubert,Ri Chen,Fritjof Nilsson,Lei Han

In light of advancements in electronic skins (E-skins), their application in extreme environments poses significant challenges. Inspired by real human skin, we have developed a hierarchical structured electronic skin that utilizes flexible carbon fiber fabric as a framework. Copper nanoflakes and embedded sensors function as the neural layer, while Ethylene Vinyl Acetate acts as the dermal layer, and Polytetrafluoroethylene is employed as the epidermal layer. The reported E-skin demonstrates outstanding flexibility, excellent heat resistance, robust mechanical properties (fracture strength of 1600 MPa, Young's modulus approximately 3.8 GPa), exceptional bending/compression strain performance, excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 120°), effective electromagnetic shielding performance (approximately 45 dB total shielding effectiveness for X-band), and electromagnetic wave absorption capability. Additionally, this E-skin possesses self-healing properties, capable of restoring to its original hydrophobic state within 30 s under a 9V voltage through the Joule heating effect, complemented by corresponding theoretical and mathematical modeling. This E-skin introduces a novel, environmentally friendly, and operationally simple strategy for enhancing the extreme environment resistance and durability of flexible devices.

Nanofibrous Kevlar Aerogel Threads for Thermal Insulation in Harsh Environments

Zengwei Liu,Jing Lyu,Dan Fang,Xuetong Zhang

Aerogel with low density, high porosity, and large surface area is a promising structure for the next generation of high-performance thermal insulation fibers and textiles. However, aerogel fibers suffer from weak mechanical properties or complex fabricating processes. Herein, a facile wet-spinning approach for fabricating nanofibrous Kevlar (KNF) aerogel threads (i.e., aerogel fibers) with high thermal insulation under extreme environments is demonstrated. The aerogel fibers made from nanofibrous Kevlar render a high specific surface area (240 m2/g) and wide-temperature thermal stability. The flexible and strong KNF aerogel fibers are woven into textiles to illustrate the excellent thermal insulation property under extreme temperature (−196 or +300 °C) and at room temperature. COMSOL simulation is applied to calculate the thermal conductivity of a single aerogel fiber and find an effective way to improve the thermal insulation property of the aerogel fiber. Furthermore, a series of functionalized fibers or textiles based on KNF aerogel fibers, such as phase-change fibers, conductive fibers, and hydrophobic textiles, have been prepared. Such KNF aerogel fibers represent a promising direction for the next generation of high-performance fibrous thermal-insulation materials.

Genomic and metabolic analyses reveal antagonistic lanthipeptides in archaea

Liang Haoyu,Song Zhi-Man,Zhong Zheng,Zhang Dengwei,Yang Wei,Zhou Le,Older Ethan A.,Li Jie,Wang Huan,Zeng Zhirui,Li Yong-Xin

Background Microbes produce diverse secondary metabolites (SMs) such as signaling molecules and antimicrobials that mediate microbe-microbe interaction. Archaea, the third domain of life, are a large and diverse group of microbes that not only exist in extreme environments but are abundantly distributed throughout nature. However, our understanding of archaeal SMs lags far behind our knowledge of those in bacteria and eukarya. Results Guided by genomic and metabolic analysis of archaeal SMs, we discovered two new lanthipeptides with distinct ring topologies from a halophilic archaeon of class Haloarchaea. Of these two lanthipeptides, archalan α exhibited anti-archaeal activities against halophilic archaea, potentially mediating the archaeal antagonistic interactions in the halophilic niche. To our best knowledge, archalan α represents the first lantibiotic and the first anti-archaeal SM from the archaea domain. Conclusion sOur study investigates the biosynthetic potential of lanthipeptides in archaea, linking lanthipeptides to antagonistic interaction via genomic and metabolic analyses and bioassay. The discovery of these archaeal lanthipeptides is expected to stimulate the experimental study of poorly characterized archaeal chemical biology and highlight the potential of archaea as a new source of bioactive SMs. Video Abstract

Unparalleled Armour for Aramid Fiber with Excellent UV Resistance in Extreme Environment

Fengxiang Chen,Lisha Zhai,Huiyu Yang,Shichao Zhao,Zonglei Wang,Chong Gao,Jingyi Zhou,Xin Liu,Zhenwei Yu,Yong Qin,Weilin Xu

Aramid fibers are widely used in many cutting-edge fields, including space, aviation, military, and electronics. However, their poor UV resistance and surface inertness seriously hinder their utilization, especially in harsh environments. Here, a dual-layer ultrathin Al 2 O 3 –TiO 2 coating with a thickness of 70–180 nm is fabricated on aramid fibers by a modified atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. The tenacity of ALD-coated aramid fibers decreases only by ≈0.85% after exposure to intense UV light (4260 W m −2 ) under high temperature (>200 ℃) for 90 min, which equals to continuous exposure to sunlight for about 17 500 days. The as-prepared aramid fibers also show excellent laundering durability, thermal and chemical stabilities. This work presents a green and damage-free approach to achieve the highly anti-UV aramid fibers without sacrificing their outstanding performance, which is expected to guide material design for future innovations in functional fibers and devices.

Polyimide Aerogel Fibers with Controllable Porous Microstructure for Super-Thermal Insulation Under Extreme Environments

Xue Tiantian,Zhu Chenyu,Feng Xueling,Wali Qamar,Fan Wei,Liu Tianxi

Application of aerogel fibers in thermal insulating garments have sparked a substantial interest. However, achieving a high porosity and low thermal conductivity for aerogel fibers remain challenging, despite the innovative designs of porous structure. Herein, we fabricated lightweight and super-thermal insulating polyimide (PI) aerogel fibers via freeze-spinning by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a pore regulator. The high affinity of PVA with water enables it to accelerate the ice crystal nucleation, adjust pore formation, and construct a controllable porous structure of PI aerogel fiber. The as-fabricated PI aerogel fiber has a considerable reduced pore size, high porosity (95.6%), improved flexibility and mechanical strength, and can be woven into fabrics. The PI aerogel fabric exhibits low thermal conductivity and excellent thermal insulation in a wide range of temperature (from − 196 to 300 °C). Furthermore, the PI aerogel fabrics can be easily functionalized to expand their applications, such as in intelligent temperature regulation and photothermal conversion. These results demonstrate that the aerogel fibers/fabric are promising materials for next-generation textile materials for personal thermal management. Graphical abstract

Flexible and multifunctional polyimide-based composite films by self-reducing reaction for electromagnetic interference shielding in extreme environments

Shan Zhang,Juntao Wu,Wenhao Liang,Pei-Yan Zhao,Hui-Ya Wang,Yi Cong,Guang-Sheng Wang

With the continuous development of modern electronic technology, it is of great significance to explore materials with flexibility and stable electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) properties in extreme environments. In response to this, a highly conductive polyimide-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-silver nanoparticles (PI-MXene-AgNPs) composite film was prepared by performing a self-reduction reaction on the surface of poly(amic acid) nanofibers . The polyimide nanofibers are wrapped with Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and AgNPs. The film has excellent EMI shielding performance in X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz). When the mass ratio of MXene/AgNO 3 is 4:1, the PI-MXene-AgNPs films have high absolute EMI shielding effectiveness up to 16785.67 dB cm 2  g −1  at a thickness of 30 μ μ m. The composite film has stable EMI shielding performance even after high (300 °C) temperature, cryogenic (−196 °C), corrosive environment , multiple bending and physical shaking. Furthermore, PI-MXene-AgNPs films exhibit excellent flexibility and superior mechanical properties that can be maintained even after treatment under harsh conditions. In addition, the PI-MXene-AgNPs composite films show good versatility, such as photothermal conversion properties, antibacterial properties . Therefore, this work provides a feasible strategy for the preparation of flexible electronic devices in extreme environments.

Efficient and lightweight battery protection film with a bionic polar bear structure in extreme environments

Fen Liu,Na Yang,Weihua Li,Fuqiang Wang,Lizhong Yang,Hui Liu,Qian Du,Alessandro Romagnoli,Jianfeng Wang

The safety of Li-ion batteries in extreme environments (low or high temperature) is the first issue to be solved in the development, and passive thermal protection is the most cost-effective approach. Conventional aerogel insulation needs to solve the application's problem of falling powder and bending problem. We prepared a hollow SiO 2 protection film inspired by polar bear hollow hairs using the electrostatic spinning microemulsion method without complex coaxial spinning needles. We tested the thermal stability, insulation performance, mechanical properties, and bending fatigue of the insulation film and discovered that this lightweight hollow SiO 2 fiber film had low thermal conductivity and remained flexible. The temperature reduction of front and back the fiber membrane reached 82.9 % for the battery module 3C overcharge thermal runaway, which successfully prevented explosion spread. Also the bionic insulation could protect battery performance at low temperature, which had a positive effect on solving the battery safety problem in extreme environments.

A Superior Self-Adhesive, Self-Healing, and Anti-Freezing Gel toward Flexible Sensor Applications in Extreme Conditions

Enke Feng,Mengzhen Zhang,Xiaoqin Li,Ying Li,Lin-An Cao

As an important part of flexible wearable electronics, hydrogel sensors have aroused great interest. However, two serious issues, low self-healing efficiency and terrible environmental adaptability, have largely limited the development of hydrogel sensors. Herein, a versatile gel elastomer (P(HEA-AA)/PEI/Gly) is synthesized via introducing polyethylenimine (PEI), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), and acrylic acid (AA) into a glycerin/water binary solvent system, which exhibits high stretchability (1427% elongation), outstanding self-healing efficiency (95%), and exceptional low-temperature adaptability (−35 °C) as well as robust self-adhesion. Meanwhile, the assembled P(HEA-AA)/PEI/Gly gel sensor possesses reliable sensitivity, wide strain range, and long-term cycling stability, which can not only precisely monitor different mechanical deformations (stretching, twisting, and bending) but also specifically distinguish the human activities in the opposite direction. In particular, even in an extremely cold environment of −35 °C, the gel sensor still can withstand large mechanical damages caused by external factors and restore its sensing capability. This feature inspires us to construct a wearable communication device with a low-temperature self-healing function that can accurately deliver various valuable information to the receiver under extreme conditions, such as “Warn”, “Cold”, and “Dangerous”. This work provides a feasible method to construct excellent self-healing and temperature tolerant gel sensors and paves the way for versatile applications in electronic skin, artificial intelligence, and soft robotics.

Ultra strong, tough and extreme environments resistant PBO papers with a nacre-like structure constructed by synergistic electrostatic interaction and interlayer entanglement

Zhaorui Meng,Weihua Zhong,Dianbo Zhang,Qun Liu,Zhaoshuo Wang,Yandong Ma,Shichao Lu,Xu Hu,Tianying Sun

In extreme environments, it is difficult to balance the strength and toughness of ultra-thin film materials. To address this problem, we propose a promising strategy to build ultra strong, tough and extreme environments resistant Poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) papers with a nacre-like structure constructed by synergistic electrostatic interaction and interlayer entanglement through the sol–gel-film method and hot press orientation. Highly interconnected PBO nanofibres (PNFs) with positive charges are tightly wound around the anisotropic graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with negative charges through strong electrostatic interaction, forming a nacre like microstructure. The addition of Fe (Ⅲ) can form a coordination bond with the amino group on PNFs. Chemical crosslinking and hydrogen bonding synergize with interlayer entanglement effect among different PNFs,which can effectively dissipate interlayer energy and alleviate the conflict between strength and toughness. The resultant tensile strength and toughness are as high as 338.3 MPa and 16.04 MJ/m 3 ,which are 197.7 % and 425.4 % of those of the intrinsic PBO paper, respectively. Additionally, after 5000 folding-unfolding cycles, the tensile strength retention and toughness retention of the PBO/GO/Fe (PGFe) paper were still 85.4 % and 71.9 %, respectively. Moreover, the paper exhibits excellent tolerance to extreme temperature environments and showed extremely strong chemical stability.
