Synergistic modulation of inverse spinel Fe3O4 by doping with chromium and nitrogen for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting

Suci Meng,Shichao Sun,Yu Liu,Yikai Lu,Min Chen

Earth-abundant Fe-based oxides have drawn less attention in electrocatalytic water splitting owing to the inferior intrinsic activity and poor conductivity. Therefore, developing an effective method to increase the catalytic performance of Fe-based oxides is of great importance for the practical application. Herein, a novel Cr/N co-doped Fe 3 O 4 electrocatalyst (denoted as Cr-Fe 3 O 4 -N/NF) is designed and prepared by a simple immersion treatment followed by a calcination method for efficient water splitting. The resultant Cr-Fe 3 O 4 -N/NF shows significant catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with overpotentials of 218 and 95 mV at 10 mA cm –2 . Furthermore, the water splitting system using Cr-Fe 3 O 4 -N/NF could afford a current density of 10 mA cm –2 at 1.53 V, which is superior to two-electrode system composed of Pt/C and RuO 2 . The high activities are attributed to the synergistic effect between Cr and N element doping. Specifically, the introduction of electron-deficient Cr is conductive to accelerate the dissociation process of water, adsorption process of intermediates, adjust the electronic structure. Simultaneously, N doping can increase the adsorption of H intermediates, provide more active sites for hydrogen absorption, and improve the electrical conductivity. This study provides a new strategy for Cr and N co-doped metal oxides electrocatalysts for high-performance water splitting.

Forest-like NiCoP@Cu3P supported on copper foam as a bifunctional catalyst for efficient water splitting

Xingxing Ma,Yaqing Chang,Zhe Zhang,Jilin Tang

The design of cost-efficient earth-abundant catalysts with superior performance for electrochemical water splitting is highly desirable. Herein, we report a simple and effective approach to fabricate a high-performance NiCoP@Cu3P heterostructure on Cu-foam (NiCoP@Cu3P/CF) for the first time, which has synergistic active sites, large electrochemical surface area, small charge-transfer resistance, efficient mass transport and electron transfer for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimized NiCoP@Cu3P/CF exhibits a pretty low overpotential of 54 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 72 mV dec−1 serving as a HER electrocatalyst and also exhibits a low overpotential of 309 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and an extremely small Tafel slope of 42 mV dec−1 serving as an OER electrocatalyst in 1 M KOH.

MoS2 Nanoplates Embedded in Co–N-Doped Carbon Nanocages as Efficient Catalyst for HER and OER

Xuebin Hou,Huimin Zhou,Min Zhao,Yibing Cai,Qufu Wei

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), although it has shown great potential use in electrocatalysis, owns inert basal planes and the low electrical conductivity that limit its effective application. In this work, a MoS2/carbon nanocage hybrid catalyst (MoS2/Co–N–CN2) with a higher density of exposed edge sites and conductivity was developed for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The hybrid catalyst was successfully prepared via confined growth of MoS2 in the porous carbon matrix derived from the metal organic framework ZIF-67. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the hybrid catalyst contained a significantly higher density of terminal sulfur edges than bulk MoS2. The hybrid catalyst exhibited a high catalytic activity for HER and OER, with low onset overpotentials and small Tafel slopes. This enhanced catalytic performance is a direct result of the increased exposed sulfur edge sites, high surface area, and unique synergic effects between MoS2 nanoplates and Co–N-doped porous carbon matrix. Therefore, the hybrid (MoS2/Co–N–CN2) catalyst serves as a highly promising bifunctional catalyst for HER and OER.

Development of ultrafine crystalline Co particles embedded in 3D flower-like highly conductive carbon matrix for water splitting

Jing Tang,Wenjian Wan,Siyuan Liu,Weijun Li,Jielei Tu,Chao Huang

Non-noble transition metals at the nanoscale offer a cost-effective and efficient solution for water splitting due to their abundance active sites and highly catalytic activity. However, nanoparticle aggregation during fabrication and electrochemical processes often leads to reduced stability and poor activity, particularly in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we directly prepared ultrafine cobalt nanograins embedded in a three-dimensional (3D) flower-like N-doped carbon matrix (Co/N-C). These ultrafine Co nanoparticles provide abundant active sites, while the N-C matrix ensures high electrical conductivity. The Co/N-C composite demonstrates outstanding catalytic performance, with low overpotentials of 361 mV for OER and 80 mV for HER at 10 mA cm -2 . The Tafel slopes are also favorable, at 49.28 mV dec -1 for OER and 63.09 mV dec -1 for HER. Moreover, the Co/N-C catalyst outperforms commercial IrO 2 , exhibiting a lower overpotential of 398 mV at 50 mA cm -2 for OER compared to 464 mV for IrO 2 . A cell constructed using the Co/N-C||Co/N-C couple achieves a voltage of 1.676 V at 10 mA cm -2 and maintains a stable current for an impressive 35 h. This novel synthesis approach and material provide a valuable reference for integrating N-doped carbon with other ultrafine metal nanoparticles for various energy-related applications.

Modulation of RuO2 Nanocrystals with Facile Annealing Method for Enhancing the Electrocatalytic Activity on Overall Water Splitting in Acid Solution

Kangjin Song,Feng Bao,Zheling Wang,Shengding Chang,Na Yao,Haiqing Ma,Yadong Li,Caizhen Zhu,Hong Xia,Fushen Lu,Yibing Song,Jin Wang,Muwei Ji

RuO 2 -based materials are considered an important kind of electrocatalysts on oxygen evolution reaction and water electrolysis, but the reported discrepancies of activities exist among RuO 2 electrocatalysts prepared via different processes. Herein, a highly efficient RuO 2 catalysts via a facile hydrolysis-annealing approach is reported for water electrolysis. The RuO 2 catalyst dealt with at 200 °C (RuO 2 -200) performs the highest activities on both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid with overpotentials of 200 mV for OER and 66 mV for HER to reach a current density of 100 mA cm −2 as well as stable operation for100 h. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations show that the activities of as-prepared RuO 2 rely on the hydroxide group/lattice oxygen (OH − /O 2− ) ratio, size, and crystalline of RuO 2 . The density functional theory (DFT) calculation also reveal that the OH − would enhance the activities of RuO 2 for HER and OER via modifying the electronic structure to facilitate intermediate adsorption, thereby reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step. The water electrolysis by using RuO 2 -200 as the catalyst on both anode and cathode demonstrates a stable generation of hydrogen and oxygen with high Faradic efficiency at a current density of ≈30 mA cm −2 and a potential of below 1.47 V.

Ni3S2 particle–embedded nanotubes as a high-performance electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Zhu Pengcheng,Ye Li,Li Xiaolei,Wang Tianxing,Zhong Yao,Zhuang Lin

Hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) are crucial for renewable energy production. Developing stable, cost-effective, and highly catalytic HER and OER electrocatalysts is paramount. In this study, a combination of hydrothermal synthesis and annealing was used to fabricate nickel sulfide (Ni 3 S 2 ) particle–embedded nanotubes supported on nickel (Ni) foam (Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF). The Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF structures featured a highly branched morphology with a large specific surface area, surpassing that of conventional Ni metal nanotubes. This design increased the number of reactive sites and enhanced the charge-transfer process. The Ni foam substrate expanded the contact area of Ni 3 S 2 , thereby improving conductivity and facilitating the adsorption/desorption of intermediates on the Ni 3 S 2 surface. Density functional theory calculations showed that the electronic structure of Ni 3 S 2 provides excellent conductivity. Moreover, the multi-branched structure and inherent conductivity of the NiS nanomaterials enhanced the Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF performance in 1M KOH, with overpotentials of 87 and 210 mV with iR compensation at 10 mA cm −2 for the HER and OER, respectively. The synthesized Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF also exhibited robust durability for 20 h. These results demonstrate that Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF is an excellent catalyst for both HER and OER.

In situ real-time investigation of ruthenium electrodeposition behavior in HCl solution using EQCM

Zhiwen Chen,Youbin Wang,Qingya Wen,Shunyan Ning,Xinpeng Wang,Yuezhou Wei

Industrial waste solutions are rich in precious metals, which are valuable secondary resources. In order to realize the separation and recovery of ruthenium by electrodeposition, this work used a combination of cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (I-t), and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) to study the electrochemical behavior and electrodeposition mechanism of ruthenium in HCl solution. The results show that the reduction of ruthenium in HCl solution is influenced by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and chlorine evolution reaction, and the reduction process of ruthenium varies at different potentials. The reduction currents of Ru(VIII)/Ru(0) and Ru(IV)/Ru(III) are observed at 0.88 V and 0.6 V. The reduction of Ru(III) to Ru(0) at negative potentials starts at −0.2 V, with peak cathodic currents between −0.2 V and −0.5 V accompanied by a significant mass increase, which is confirmed to be the electrodeposition of metallic ruthenium by SEM and EDS. The microscopic morphology of the ruthenium coating is spherical particles, and the nucleation mode of electrodeposition is progressive nucleation. The HER leads to a macroscopic morphology of a cleaved lamellar structure, which is not tightly adhered to the substrate. The metallic ruthenium starts to oxidize and dissolve rapidly after 1.12 V, leading to a rapid degradation of the electrode surface quality.

Low-cost and multi-level structured NiFeMn alloy@NiFeMn oxyhydroxide electrocatalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting

Zeyu Ge,Fei Wang,Junji Guo,Jungang Ma,Chunyan Yu,Aihua Zhong,Yizhu Xie

Fabricating energy-saving, inexpensive and high-activity electrocatalysts for overall water splitting has always been a significant challenge. Electrochemical deposition is considered as a promising method for large-scale industrial applications, but it is prone to generating dense compounds, which reduces the effective catalytic activity area of electrodes. Herein, a low-cost and high-performance bifunctional NiFeMn alloy@NiFeMn oxyhydroxide electrocatalyst was deposited by several minute electrodeposition. Due to the doping of manganese, this method effectively engineers a multi-level dendritic NiFeMn alloy and oxyhydroxide layer, and significantly reduces the energy barrier for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which has been proved by the density functional theory calculations. Specifically, the as-prepared catalyst shows excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER (219 mV) and HER (19 mV) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Experimentally and theoretically, the catalyst demonstrated extraordinary performance for overall water splitting and provides a new possibility for industrialization in the future.

Insight into Mn and Ni doping of Ni1-xMnxPS3 and Mn1-xNixPS3 nanosheets on electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution activity

Dmitrii Rakov,Yuzhi Li,Siqi Niu,Ping Xu

Recently reported transition metal phosphosulfide (MPS 3 or MPS) nanosheets (NSs) demonstrated outstanding activity towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and proper doping of a second transition metal might even enhance the catalytic activity. By considering the oxophilicity of the doping element, here we demonstrate the Mn (with higher oxophilicity) and Ni (with lower oxophilicity) doping of Ni 1- x Mn x PS 3 and Mn 1- x Ni x PS 3 NSs on their HER and OER activity in alkaline solution. It is found that non-substituted NiPS 3 NSs show better catalytic activity than their Mn-doped samples. On the contrary, Ni doping into MnPS 3 NSs significantly improves the electrocatalytic performance. This work may substantially expand the understanding of the role of elemental oxophilicity on the electrochemical water splitting activities of Ni/Mn based catalysts.

3D hierarchical Co3O4@Co3S4 nanoarrays as anode and cathode materials for oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction

Xiaoqiang Du,Hui Su,Xiaoshuang Zhang

With the increasing energy demand and environmental pollution, hydrogen production by water splitting is one of the best ways to solve the energy shortage. Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical Co3O4@Co3S4/NF was first synthesized directly in situ, grown on the nickel foam through a simple hydrothermal process, and the anion-exchange reaction and the Ostwald ripening mechanism were investigated by adjusting the reaction time. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities of Co3O4@Co3S4/NF-24 h were investigated, and the required overpotentials were 270 mV and 143 mV, when the current density was 100 mA cm−2 and 20 mA cm−2, respectively. Subsequently, the overall water splitting activity of Co3O4@Co3S4/NF-24 h was investigated; when the current density was 10 mA cm−2, the low cell voltage was 1.53 V, which, to our knowledge, was among the smallest values reported for electro-driven water splitting so far. This high catalytic activity is attributed to the construction of the O–S interface and the increased electron transfer rate at the beginning of the reaction. Through XRD, SEM and XPS characterization, it is proven that Co3O4@Co3S4/NF-24 h is relatively stable and is expected to be an efficient and stable water splitting catalyst.

Strong coordination ability of sulfur with cobalt for facilitating scale-up synthesis of Co9S8 encapsulated S, N co-doped carbon as a trifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction

Feifei Xu,Jianghong Zhao,Jianlong Wang,Taotao Guan,Kaixi Li

High activity trifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts , targeting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), are rationally designed by integrating the merits of both Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles and carbons nanosheets . Herein, Co 9 S 8 loaded with S, N co-doped carbon core–shell catalyst (Co 9 S 8 @SNC) was reasonably designed and synthesized by using the strong coordination effect between Co 2+ and C S at the molecular level. The significant synergistic effect between the S, N co-doped carbon shell and Co 9 S 8 core endows the catalyst with excellent catalytic performance for ORR, HER, and OER reactions. The carbon shell enhances the conductivity of the hybrid material , while the Co 9 S 8 core provides the main catalytic active sites. More specifically, the half-wave potential for ORR is 0.846 mV, and the overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER are 320 mV and 170 mV, respectively. To test its practical application, zinc-air battery assembled by Co 9 S 8 @SNC shows a high power density of 239 mW cm −2 , excellent rechargeability, and long cyclic stability. This work provides a promising and extensible method to in-situ synthesize core–shell metal sulfides loaded S, N co-doped carbon composites, which can be a promising candidate for electrocatalytic material in energy storage and conversion devices.

N-doped graphitic carbon shell-encapsulated FeCo alloy derived from metal–polyphenol network and melamine sponge for oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, and hydrogen evolution reactions in alkaline media

Hu Liu,Dong-Hui Yang,Xu-Yun Wang,Jiangwei Zhang,Bao-Hang Han

Exploiting low cost and durable electrocatalysts with high efficiency for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great significance for energy conversion and storage applications. Herein, a hybrid electrocatalyst of FeCo alloy nanoparticles embedded in a porous N -doped carbon was prepared via a pyrolysis process of low-cost melamine sponge and mass-produced metal–polyphenol network. Benefting from the metal coordination of metal–polyphenol network and abundant N source of melamine sponge, the metal–N moiety and FeCo alloy nanoparticles (wtih a diameter around 50 nm) encapsulated in a N -doped graphene-like carbon layer were formed in-situ. Such intimate integration of graphene-like carbon-encapsulated FeCo alloys, metal–N active species, and porous structure is conducive to improve the catalytic activity and increase the catalytic durability in alkaline media. As a consequence, the as-prepared electrocatalyst exhibits the pronounced activity toward ORR, OER, and HER simultaneously under alkaline condition, particularly on the performances of potential, stability, and methanol tolerance.
