The environmentally friendly and sustainable characteristics of hydrogen generation through water electrolysis have drawn considerable interest. However, the inherently retarded reaction dynamics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limit its efficiency. Consequently, advancing high-performance and cost-effective OER electrocatalysts significantly strengthen the water electrolysis’ performance. A composite nanostructured catalyst is successfully developed by integrating S-doped NiMoO 4 with NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH). Characterization results indicate that the NiMoO 4 -decorated NiFe-LDH increases catalytic efficiency by providing additional active sites, while the introduced S further enhances electrical conductivity. Electrochemical tests reveal that the OER capability of S-NiMoO 4 @NiFe-LDH under alkaline conditions is exceptional, achieving a negligible overpotential of 256 mV at 50 mA cm −2 and a minimal Tafel slope of 27.8 mV dec −1 , along with outstanding durability at 10 mA cm −2 (200 h). Furthermore, electrochemical probe experiments and mechanistic analyses reveal the possible potential reaction route of the catalyst during the OER, playing a crucial role in clarifying how the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) synergistically enhance catalytic performance. This study affords a compelling strategy for establishing stable and efficient catalysts for electrochemical water oxidation.

Spinel-type transition metal oxide (AB 2 O 4 ) are promising non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), addressing the challenges of high cost and poor stability in electrocatalytic water splitting. However, their widespread application is hindered by low electrical conductivity and suboptimal performance. In this study, we developed an oxygen vacancy anchoring strategy to construct a highly efficient and durable NiCo 2 O 4 -NiSe 2 heterojunction catalyst on a nickel foam substrate. The three-dimensional cross-linked porous nanorod array facilitates mass and charge transportation. The abundant interconnected interfaces enhance electron transfer kinetics and adsorption of OH intermediates, as confirmed by theoretical simulations. As a result, the as-synthesized NiCo 2 O 4 @NiSe 2 /NF exhibits an overpotential of only 299 mV at a current density of 60 mA cm −2 , significantly outperforming the single-phase NiCo 2 O 4 and demonstrating exceptional durability.

Molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) has attracted much attention as a potential catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but its unique low activity and low edge active centers limit its electrocatalytic activity. In this study, catalysts were prepared by growing NiSe nanoclusters in situ onto MoS2 substrates via electrodeposition; ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets and NiSe nanoclusters were cross-linked with each other to form a unique three-dimensional rosette structure; and MoS2@NiSe catalysts were successfully synthesised, which significantly improved bifunctional catalytic performance. The synthesised MoS2@NiSe catalysts exhibited good electrochemical performance: overpotentials required to satisfy the HER and OER processes at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH were 80 mV and 254 mV, respectively. When applied as a cathode and anode to assemble a bifunctional electrode system, the MoS2@NiSe||MoS2@NiSe electrolytic cell system required only 1.54 V to achieve 10 mA cm−2 in an alkaline electrolyte, which exceeded the value of most of the bifunctional catalysts reported in the literature to date. In addition, the catalyst maintained good surface structure and catalytic performance after a 24 h stability test. This study provides a new idea for the improvement and design of MoS2-based bifunctional catalysts and provides an important reference for research in the field of clean energy.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the efficiency limiting half-reaction in water electrolysis for hydrogen production, which necessitates the use of an efficient and cost-effective catalyst. Nonmetal and metal element codoping is an effective way to profoundly modulate the electronic structure of transition metal oxide catalysts and the interaction with oxygen (O) adsorbates, which are crucial forOER efficiency. Herein, a sulfur (S), phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) element codoped nickel oxide (NiO), denoted as S,P-NiO(Fe), was prepared as an OER catalyst, wherein the incorporation of P and Fe played significant roles in regulating the electronic structure of the NiO motif and reducing the activation barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) during the OER process, thus substantially enhancing the catalytic capability. Concretely, the S,P-NiO(Fe) electrode displayed an overpotential of 230 mV at an OER response of 50 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 64 mV dec−1 and robust catalytic stability. Theoretical calculations showed that the incorporation of P and Fe downshifted the d-band center position, which mediated the adsorptive interaction strengths of O-intermediates and reduced the activation barrier of the RDS (from *O to *OOH), whereupon the low energy pathway led to rapid OER kinetics. This work offers a viable tactic to improve the OER catalytic capability of metal oxides through metal and nonmetal element codoping.

In this study, β-PbO 2 –Co 3 O 4 composite coatings were synthesized on a substrate using the electrodeposition method in an electrolyte containing Pb 2+ and Co 3 O 4 particles. The preparation process study shows that the β-PbO 2 bath containing Co 3 O 4 particles becomes more stable for an ultrasonic dispersion time within 30 min, with the stability beginning to decrease after the ultrasonic time exceeds 30 min. Co 3 O 4 particles in the β-PbO 2 bath are positively charged, with anions being adsorbed onto the particles. The nucleation behavior study shows that the electric field force plays a dominant role in the adsorption process for the Co 3 O 4 particles. The nucleation and growth of β-PbO 2 on the Co 3 O 4 particles started for the particles closer to the substrate. In addition, the thickness of the β-PbO 2 layer on the Co 3 O 4 particles was inversely proportional to the distance between the Co 3 O 4 particles and the substrate. Compared to the pure PbO 2 electrode, the oxygen evolution overpotentials for the β-PbO 2 –Co 3 O 4 electrode are decreased significantly, which demonstrates an energy-saving effect.

For hydrogen production, the greatest emphasis is on the development of economical and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. In the present work, P-doped CuMn2O4 on nickel foam (NF) is prepared. For the physical and structural analysis, XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET techniques are performed. The optimized P0.3-CuMn2O4/NF shows the best OER and HER activity compared to other concentrations and pristine CuMn2O4/NF. P0.3-CuMn2O4/NF exhibits reduced OER and HER onset potentials of 1.4 and 0.095 V vs RHE, and overpotentials of 208 and 103 mV at 10 mA cm–2, respectively. For P0.3-CuMn2O4/NF, the kinetic study utilizing Tafel slope 32 and 44 mV dec–1 suggests more rapid OER and HER processes, respectively. Furthermore, following phosphorus doping, the turnover frequency (TOF) study shows enhanced intrinsic OER (TOF = 2.3 s–1 at η = 260 mV) and HER activity (TOF = 1.3 s–1 at η = 260 mV). P0.3-CuMn2O4/NF excellent OER and HER activities are supported by the double layer capacitance (Cdl = 92 mF cm–2). Hence, P0.3-CuMn2O4/NF is a potential electrocatalyst for both processes in an alkaline environment because of its improved OER and HER performance.

Developing an efficient non-noble metal catalyst to accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for enabling the widespread use of electrochemical water splitting. In this work, we proposed a strategy of anion–cation dual doping to fabricate Fe and S dual-doping NiMoO 4 one-dimensional nanorods on nickel foam (Fe-NiMoO 4 -S/NF) through a simple preparation method. The combination of experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrates that the simultaneous incorporation of both Fe and S can effectively regulate morphology and electronic structure, enhance charge transfer, increase the exposure of active sites, and optimize the adsorption of OER intermediates. The optimized Fe-NiMoO 4 -S/NF reveals excellent OER activity and structure stability, achieving a low overpotentials of 255 mV at 50 mA cm⁻ 2 in alkaline solution (1.0 M KOH) and 292 mV at 50 mA cm⁻ 2 in simulated alkaline seawater (1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl). Furthermore, the Fe-NiMoO 4 -S/NF maintains robust stability at high current density for 100 h and has small Tafel slopes of 66.0 and 78.1 mV dec⁻ 1 in alkaline solution and simulated alkaline seawater, respectively. In addition, overall water splitting at 10 mA cm⁻ 2 is achieved with an exceptionally low cell voltage of 1.54 V using the Fe-NiMoO 4 -S || Pt/C configuration. Thus, this study provides a significant guideline for the development of non-noble metal OER electrocatalysts through anion–cation dual-doping strategy. Graphical abstract A novel Fe and S dual-doped NiMoO4 one-dimensional nanorods on nickel foam (Fe-NiMoO4-S/NF) were designed for boosting the oxygen evolution reaction activity.

Efficient and sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis relies on the utilization of highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Birnessite (δ-MnO 2 ), a type of manganese oxide with a local atomic structure similar to the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II, has emerged as a highly promising OER catalyst. Despite considerable efforts have been dedicated to enhancing its activity, the crucial aspect of stability has been often overlooked. Herein, Ti ions have been selectively incorporated into the in-layered lattice of δ-MnO 2 nanosheet arrays using a hydrothermal method, aiming to enhance the stability without reducing its activity. The resulting optimal Ti-MnO 2 catalyst demonstrates enhanced OER activity in alkaline electrolyte, exhibiting an impressive 85 mV reduction in overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 , surpassing the initial MnO 2 (495 mV reduced to 410 mV). Remarkably, it shows exceptional durability, with negligible performance decrease observed over the entire 50-hour testing period. It has been demonstrated that the incorporation of Ti serves a dual purpose: it adjusts the electronic structure around Mn, enhancing activity, and simultaneously stabilizes the Mn 3+ active sites, resulting in exceptional durability. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide additional confirmation of the optimized electronic structure of MnO 2 achieved through Ti doping, leading to a reduction in the free energy of adsorbed intermediates and expediting the kinetics of the OER process. Our findings open a pathway for enhancing OER stability and activity by doping electrocatalytic inert ions into the lattice of MnO 2 , applicable not only to Mn-based oxides but also other non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts.

For the electrochemcial hydrogen production, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal half-reaction in water splitting. However, OER suffers sluggish kinetics and high overpotential, leading to the increase of overall energy consumption and decrease of the energy efficiency. In this work, high-quality cobalt oxide porous nanotubes (Co3O4-PNTs) are easily obtained by simple self-template approach. One-dimensional (1D) porous structure provides the large specific surface area, enough abundant active atoms and effective mass transfer. In addition, Co3O4-PNTs also own self-stability of 1D architecture, benefitting the their durability for electrocatalytic reaction. Thus, Co3O4-PNTs with optimal annealing temperature and time reveal the attractive alkaline OER performance (Tafel slope of 56 mV dec−1 and 323 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm−2), which outperform the Co3O4 nanoparticles and benchmark commercial RuO2 nanoparticles. Furthermore, Co3O4-PNTs also exhibit excellent OER durability for least 10 h at the 10 mA cm−2. Overall, Co3O4-PNTs with low cost can be serve as a highly reactive and economical catalyst for OER.

The superior electrocatalysts for seawater oxygen evolution reaction (OER) require fast kinetic to promote reactant (OH − ) transport and adsorption, and to optimize oxygenated intermediates (O* and OOH*) adsorption, but also high corrosion resistance by impeding Cl − adsorption under harsh seawater conditions, while the incomprehensive design greatly hinder the system advancement at high current densities. Herein, we propose orderly incorporating amorphous FeSe nanosheets as the dynamic anti-corrosion layer to reinforce charge redistribution of CoNi layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets array and create favorable microenvironments. The ordered two-dimensional/three-dimensional structure prepared by novel non-equilibrium electrodeposition strategy allows amorphous FeSe component not only to activate CoNi-LDH for promoting OH − adsorption, optimizing oxygenated intermediates adsorption and increasing Cl − adsorption energy, but also repel Cl − by dynamic polyanion layer without blocking active sites, thus affording effective seawater OER with low overpotential, excellent stability and high selectivity at high current densities. The integrated CoNi-LDH/FeSe electrode delivers a small overpotential (338 mV at 500 mA cm −2 ) and possesses outstanding stability and selectivity during a 500-hour durability test at 500 mA cm −2 in alkaline seawater.

Constructing ultra-high activity, highly efficient and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, especially at large current density, plays a key role in the development of the electrolytic water industry but remains challenging. Highly dispersed alloy compound with large electrolyte contact area and excellent internal conductivity is considered as a kind of ideal candidate. Here, we have rationally designed and synthesized a nickel-platinum alloy with octahedral structure loaded on the surface of the carbon layer (NiPt/C). Under the in-situ modulation of the iron-containing electrolyte, the Fe modified NiPt/C catalyst displays an amazing OER activity in 1 M KOH, and only requires low overpotentials of 183 and 242 mV to reach 100 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. The comprehensive characterization analysis and property measurements reveal that the pre-oxidation of Pt at OER potential contribute to the rapid production of nickel hydroxide, thus promoting the deposition of more iron active sites on its surface. Moreover, the Pt/C/CP (−) //NiPt/C/CP (+) couple embedded in anion-exchange membrane water electrolyser also displays a low cell voltage of 2.03 V at 1000 mA cm −2 with significant electrochemical stability, which endows it a great potential in the field of hydrogen production and electrochemical energy storage.

We reported a new and facile synthesis route to prepare polyaniline (PANI) nanowire@Co-Fe LDHs nanosheets in two steps. The PANI@Co-Fe LDHs has excellent OER activity with a small overpotential of 261 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 67.85 mV·dec −1 . The PANI@Co-Fe LDHs also has long-term performance and stability. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst depends on the good electrical conductivity of PANI and the effect of the two-dimensional (2D) layered structure of Co-Fe LDHs. The work opens a new application for energy storage and conversion.
