Complete dechlorination of lindane over N-doped porous carbon supported Pd catalyst at room temperature and atmospheric pressure

Jirui Yang,Xinhua Qi,Feng Shen,Mo Qiu,Richard Lee Smith

Transfer hydrogenation is highly effective for dechlorinating priority organic pollutants in wastewater. Lindane could be completely dechlorinated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure via transfer hydrogenation, in which Pd (3.1 wt%) supported on chitosan-derived porous carbon (3.1Pd@A600) and formic acid (FA) were used as catalyst and hydrogen source, respectively. Favorable catalytic activity of 3.1Pd@A600 is attributed to pyridinic N of the support that allowed Pd nanoparticles to be well-dispersed in the solid and to pyridinic N-Pd interactions that enhanced FA decomposition over that observed for commercial carbon supported Pd catalyst (5Pd@AC). In the reaction system containing 3.1Pd@A600 and FA, 99.7% lindane conversion and 100% dechlorination efficiency could be achieved at 25 °C and atmospheric pressure within 60 min. Benzene and cyclohexane were identified as end-products of lindane dechlorination . The transfer hydrogenation strategy developed in this study has wide application to chlorinated organic pollutants contained in actual waste streams.

Tuning the synthetic cobalt(III)corroles electroreductive catalyzed lindane dehalogenation reactivity through meso-substituents

Weihua Zhu,Tingting Huang,Mingfeng Qin,Minzhi Li,John Mack,Xu Liang

In this study, a facile dechlorination of lindane is achieved under mild electron reductive conditions with a series of Co(III)corroles used as electrocatalysts . Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical measurements are used to determine the mechanism of the reaction. A GC–MS analysis of the dechlorination products indicates that the meso -aryl substituents of the cobalt(III)corroles have a significant influence on the dechlorination efficiency when a fixed potential is applied. Under reductive catalysis, the Co(III)corroles provide highly satisfactory dechlorination results, since lindane was ultimately converted to chlorobenzene .

Glutamatergic transmission associated with locomotion-related neurotoxicity to lindane over generations in Caenorhabditis elegans

Yunjiang Yu,Xin Hua,Haibo Chen,Zhengdong Wang,Yajing Han,Xichao Chen,Yue Yang,Mingdeng Xiang

Organochlorine pesticide lindane in the environment and biota results in the potential risks on ecosystem and human health. Lindane can adversely affect the locomotion and nervous system, yet the potential neurotoxicity of lindane over generations remains uncertain. In this study, the neurotoxicity and underlying mechanisms in Caenorhabditis elegans ( C. elegans ) were investigated after parental (P0) exposure to lindane at environmentally relevant concentrations over generations. Exposure to lindane at concentrations of 10–100 ng/L significantly decreased body bends and head thrashes in P0 generation. Significant decrease of fluorescence labeled different neurotransmitters , and clear morphological changes by exposure to lindane at 10–100 ng/L suggested that lindane could induce the neuronal damage in C. elegans . During the transgenerational process, decreased locomotive behaviors were also observed in F1–F3 generations, and head thrashes returned to normal levels in F4 generation. Moreover, lindane exposure down-regulated the expression of dat-1 , dop-1 , glr-1 and mod-1 genes, while up-regulated unc-30 gene in P0 generation, which recovered to normal levels in F4 generation. Interestingly, eat-4 continued to be regulated from inhibition to stimulation in P0–F4 generations, suggesting that glutamatergic transmission may more contribute to the neurotoxicity of lindane over generations.

Linarin improves the dyskinesia recovery in Alzheimer's disease zebrafish by inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase activity

Hongye Pan,Jinghui Zhang,Yangyang Wang,Keke Cui,Yueting Cao,Longhu Wang,Yongjiang Wu

Background Due to complex pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), currently there is no effective disease-modifying treatment . Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) has introduced itself as an important target for AD therapy. Linarin as the representative active ingredient of flavonoid glycoside in Flos chrysanthemi indici has been found to have anti-acetylcholinesterase effect. Aims The present study intended to explore the potential effect of linarin for treatment of AD. Main methods In this study, molecular docking simulation was used to evaluate whether linarin could dock with AChE and decipher the mechanism of linarin as an AChE inhibitor . After molecular docking simulation , AlCl 3 -induced Alzheimer's disease zebrafish model was established. Effects of linarin on treating AD zebrafish dyskinesia and AChE inhibition were compared with donepezil (DPZ) which was used as a positive control drug . Key findings Molecular docking simulation showed that linarin plays a critical role in AChE inhibition by binding AChE active sites. The experiments illustrated that the dyskinesia recovery rate of AD zebrafish could be significantly improved by linarin. The dyskinesia recovery and AChE inhibition rate were 88.0% and 74.5% respectively, while those of DPZ were 79.3% and 43.6%. Significance These findings provide evidences for supporting linarin to be developed into an AD drug by inhibiting the activity of AChE.

Toxicity of lindane induced by oxidative stress and intestinal damage in Caenorhabditis elegans

Yunjiang Yu,Xin Hua,Haibo Chen,Ya’e Wang,Zongrui Li,Yajing Han,Mingdeng Xiang

Lindane , a lipophilic pollutant, may be toxic to organisms. To explore the toxic effects of lindane and the underlying mechanisms of this toxicity, the animal model Caenorhabditis elegans ( C. elegans ) was exposed to lindane for 3 d at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.01–100 ng/L) and the physiological, biochemical, and molecular indices were evaluated. Subacute exposure to 10–100 ng/L of lindane caused adverse physiological effects on the development, reproduction, and locomotion behaviors in C. elegans . Exposure to 1–100 ng/L of lindane increased the accumulation of Nile red and blue food dye, which suggested high permeability of the intestine in nematodes. Lindane exposure also significantly influenced the expression of genes related to intestinal development (e.g., mtm-6 and opt-2 ). Moreover, reactive oxygen species production, lipofuscin accumulation, and expression of oxidation resistance genes (e.g., sod-5 and isp-1 ) were significantly increased in C. elegans exposed to 10–100 ng/L of lindane, which indicated that lindane exposure induced oxidative stress . According to Pearson correlation analyses, oxidative stress and intestinal damage were significantly correlated with the adverse physiological effects of lindane. Therefore, the adverse effects of lindane may have been induced by intestinal damage and oxidative stress, and mtm-6 , opt-2 , sod-5 , isp-1 , and mev- 1 might play important roles in the toxicity of lindane.

Enhancement of persulfate activation by Fe-biochar composites: Synergism of Fe and N-doped biochar

Peng Huang,Peng Zhang,Cuiping Wang,Jingchun Tang,Hongwen Sun

Persulfate-based (PS-based) advanced oxidation process is a promising technology for degradation of organic pollutants . PS activation needs efficient and economical catalysts and heterogeneous Fe-carbon composites are competitive. Herein, novel N-doped biochar-loaded nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) composites (Fe@N-BC) were synthesized and evaluated for PS activation. Detailed characterization data indicated that graphitic and pyridine N structures were introduced by N-doping, which enhanced the anchoring, dispersion and loading of amorphous nZVI on biochar. Remarkably, the optimized Fe@N-BC material, Fe@N 2 -BC 900 , presented excellent catalytic performance for PS activation for lindane removal. The N-doped defects in biochar acted as reactive bridges and accelerated the electron transfer between nZVI and PS, showing strong synergistic effects toward nZVI. O 2 • −  and 1 O 2 were the dominant active species in catalytic systems. Additionally, Fe@N 2 -BC 900 catalyst showed effectiveness over a wide pH range for lindane removal. This work provides a new approach to the rational design and application of Fe@N-BC for persulfate activation in pollution control, which is certified by deep exploration of reaction mechanism.

LC-MS based metabolomics identification of natural metabolites against Fusarium oxysporum

Yang Wenjuan,Tang Sidi,Xu Rubing,Zhang Lu,Zhou Zihao,Yang Yong,Li Yanyan,Xiang Haibo

Fusarium is a soil-borne pathogen that poses a serious threat to the quality and yield of hundreds of crops worldwide, particularly tobacco production. Using metabolomics technology, we investigated natural metabolites from disease-conducting soil (DCS) and disease-suppressing soil (DSS) of tobacco rhizosphere as fungicides to control tobacco Fusarium wilt (TFW), which is mainly caused by Fusarium oxysporum. Furthermore, the antifungal mechanisms of these natural metabolites were preliminarily elucidated through various assessments, including antifungal activity determination, chemotaxis effect tests, PI staining experiments, and measurements of extracellular conductivity and protein content. Metabolomics results showed that the DCS with three different disease grades (G1, G5 and G9 groups) had significantly higher levels of 15, 14 and 233 differential rhizosphere metabolites (DRMs) and significantly lower levels of 72, 152 and 170 DRMs compared to the DSS (G0 group). According to KEGG pathway analysis, these DRMs were found to be enriched in the caffeine metabolism, biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids, galactose metabolism and tyrosine metabolism, etc. Linustatin, scopoletin and phenylpropiolic acid were picked out from these DRMs and found to have suppressive activity against F. oxysporum through correlation analysis and antifungal experiments. The three DRMs showed strong inhibitory effects on the growth and spore germination of F. oxysporum at concentrations of 0.5 mM or higher in each test period. Furthermore, F. oxysporum showed a phobotaxis effect against these three DRMs at concentrations as low as 0.25 mM. Finally, we found that the three DRMs had an inhibitory effect on F. oxysporum by destroying the integrity of the cell membrane and increasing the membrane permeability of F. oxysporum. This study firstly reports the inhibition activity of phenylpropiolic acid and linustatin on F. oxysporum, providing a practical and environmentally friendly method for biocontrol of TFW by using natural fungicides.
