Edible antibacterial packaging films, due to their excellent biosafety and environmental friendliness, exhibit significant application potential in food preservation. However, current edible antibacterial films primarily rely on natural bacteriostatic compounds, which are limited by high dosage requirements, inconsistent performance, and narrow antibacterial spectra, making it challenging to effectively control microbial contamination. To address these challenges, we introduced erythrosine B (ERY), an FDA-approved pigment with strong photodynamic inactivation performance, combined with gellan gum (GG) to develop a novel edible photodynamic antibacterial film. Under light irradiation, ERY can rapidly generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) at a concentration as low as 5 μg/mL, thereby killing 100 % of bacteria and significantly inhibiting fungal growth. Notably, the gel network of GG serves a dual purpose by restricting ERY molecular movement and creating a protective barrier, effectively mitigating photodegradation of ERY caused by excessive ROS, thus enhancing the photostability of ERY. Experimental results demonstrate that, under identical light intensity, GG-ERY (GGE) exhibits negligible photobleaching after 30 min, showing an 8.26-fold improvement in inhibition efficacy compared to ERY, facilitating the sustained production of ROS. Owing to its efficient and long-lasting antibacterial performance, the GGE film extends the postharvest storage period of grapes to 14 days, representing a 1.75-fold increase compared to the control group. This study not only significantly enhances the antibacterial efficacy of edible films but also provides novel insights into the application of edible pigments in photodynamic antibacterial and food preservation.

Loquat is a nutrient-rich fruit with juicy and sweet pulp, but it is vulnerable to rot and deterioration without proper postharvest preservation measures. This study aimed to improve the postharvest quality of loquat by developing a microemulsion system based on an essential oil extracted from theTorreya grandiscv. Merrillii aril (TaEO), which has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. An optimal TaEO microemulsion (TaEO-ME) was formulated, using a mixture of Tween-40 and Tween-80 as the surfactant, 1-butanol as the co-surfactant, and TaEO as the oil phase, with mass ratios of 9:1, 3:1, and 6:1, respectively. Two TaEO-ME formulations with 60% and 70% water contents were stable for 180 days at room temperature, with a mean droplet size below 12 nm and polydispersity index less than 0.24. They also exhibited higher stability and enhanced biological activities compared to free TaEO. Loquat fruit treated with TaEO-ME displayed a reduced decay index and lower membrane lipid peroxidation after 15 days of storage at 15 °C, as indicated by the lower malondialdehyde content and higher peroxidase activity. Moreover, the TaEO-ME treatment preserved the nutrient quality by maintaining the total phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid content. Our findings suggested that TaEO-ME can be used as a substitute for chemical preservatives to keep fruits fresh. Keywords:microemulsion;Torreya grandiscv. The cuticle layer covering on surface plays important roles in the quality changes including visual of appearance, texture, and water loss for fruit. The surface microstructures, chemical composition of epi- and intracuticular waxes, and cutin monomers, as well as their effects on fruit transpiration in Sanhua plum were comprehensively carried out. Microscopic observation revealed an irregular surface morphology characterized by continuous crusts interspersed with sparsely distributed nano-granular crystals. Chemical analysis demonstrated that the epicuticular waxes were primarily composed of very-long-chain n -alkanes, secondary alcohols, aldehydes, fatty acids, primary alcohols, and alkyl esters. The intracuticular waxes contained comparable levels of very-long-chain components and pentacyclic triterpenoids. The cutin monomers were predominantly C 16 -dihydroxy fatty acids, and other hydroxyl fatty acid derivatives, present with a moderate level as other reported Rosaceae family fruit. Compared to cutin polymers, the cuticular waxes contributed approximately 76.9 % of the total barrier to water loss, with the epicuticular wax layer exhibiting 1.6-fold to the intracuticular wax layer for the barrier efficiency in Sanhua plum fruit. The elucidation of the potential effect of surface lipids on transpiration was likely associated with the structural and chemical distribution of cuticular wax layers within the cuticle.

A method was developed for the liquid exfoliation of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) from its bulk materials using ultrasound in aqueous phase with the assistance of chitosan (CS) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) for effective loading of a variety of therapeutic molecules. The characterization results revealed that the as-made chemically-exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets had an average thickness of ∼10 nm. The new material, CS and Ag NPs-modified MoS 2 (MoS 2 -CS-Ag), showed highly effective antifungal activities against Saccharomyces uvarum and Aspergillus niger . The Ag NPs-loaded MoS 2 nanosheets achieved outstanding antifungal effect by inhibiting fungal growth both in vitro and in vivo . Notably, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of spore morphological changes caused by MoS 2 -CS-Ag treatment reveal that it may directly cause the cell death. The result of the analysis of the application of MoS 2 -CS-Ag as an antifungal for fruits also demonstrated the MoS 2 -CS-Ag protective properties against fungi. The excellent film-forming ability of CS has been shown to contribute to the effectiveness of MoS 2 -CS-Ag in preserving the freshness of fruits, exhibited in four chemical quality sections: Vc, total carbohydrate, weight loss, and titratable acidity in fruit preservation application assay. The present study reports a new and exciting insight in a multi-functional drug carrier for protecting postharvest fruit.

Postharvest fruits and vegetables are susceptible to spoilage, which may result in food safety hazards and economic losses. In this study, a stem-insertable preservation column was developed and applied for the preservation of post-harvest grapes. The preservation column incorporates orange essential oil Pickering emulsion as the active component, with natural antimicrobial substances being effectively stabilized through physical emulsification technology. Experimental results showed that the inserted preservation columns enable targeted release of active compounds through the vascular system and achieved significant inhibition against pathogenic microorganisms including Staphylococcus aureus at grape stem junctions. The preservation column treatment reduced grape decay incidence by over 60 % compared to untreated controls. Furthermore, this technology effectively mitigates fruit water loss, decreasing the mass reduction rate by 45 %, while improving nutrient retention - notably reducing vitamin C loss from 70.22 % in controls to 52.20 % in the P-CZ treatment group. These effects collectively maintain optimal sensory characteristics and marketability of grape berries. The developed method exhibits multiple advantages including operational simplicity, absence of chemical residues, and consistent preservation efficacy. These findings confirm that the essential oil-based preservation column technology represents a safe and effective innovation for grape postharvest management.

Long-term cold storage usually induces chilling injury of pear fruits. This study investigated the effects of CTS/SiO 2 -GABA (Chitosan/Silicon dioxide-γ-Aminobutyric acid) coating on alleviating chilling injury in pears during long-term refrigeration (1 °C). Results showed that GABA significantly improved the mechanical properties of CTS-based films, attributable to amidation, Maillard reaction, and non-covalent crosslinking between CTS and GABA, which offset the undesirable effects of SiO 2 . Specifically, the values of tensile strength and elongation at break of CTS/SiO 2 -GABA film increased to 23.95 MPa and 78.13 %, respectively. These enhanced crosslinked structures also contributed to the water resistance behavior of CTS/SiO 2 -GABA film, that is, the moisture content, water solubility and water vapor permeability reduced to 20.38 %, 25.49 % and 0.86 g·s −1 ·m −1 ·Pa −1 ·10 −7 respectively, and the water contact angle increased to 50.47°. Additionally, CTS/SiO 2 -GABA coating effectively maintained the quality of pears, including weight loss (4.38 %), firmness (6.24 kg·mm −2 ), peel yellowing (1.40 of Δa*), core browning, sugars/acids balance. Mechanistically, CTS/SiO 2 -GABA coating regulated the metabolic flux in respiratory pathways of pears (suppress glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle, enhance pentose phosphate pathway), by inhibiting ethylene biosynthesis and enhancing GABA shunt metabolism. This study provides a novel perspective on the regulatory mechanism of functional coatings to improve postharvest fruit quality.

Postharvest losses, specifically due to Penicillium italicum disease, pose a significant challenge to the mandarin industry. To enhance mandarin preservation efficacy, this study developed a chitosan (CS)-based berberine sulfate/alpha-lipoic acid composite film (CS@BS/ALA) and evaluated its effects on mandarin preservation. Among the various concentrations, 4 % CS demonstrated optimal wettability and adhesion. Incorporating BS/ALA into CS formed a dense double-network structure that reduced oxygen permeability. CS@BS/ALA treatment effectively inhibited weight loss, delayed fruit softening, maintained gloss, and preserved the brix acid ratio. It also enhanced antioxidant capacity by reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) content and sustaining superoxide dismutase (SOD) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activities. Furthermore, antimicrobial tests revealed pronounced inhibitory effects of CS@BS/ALA against Penicillium italicum . These findings indicate that CS@BS/ALA extends mandarin shelf life by regulating respiratory metabolism, enhancing antioxidant defenses, and suppressing microbial infection, thereby providing an innovative solution for reducing postharvest losses.
