Analyzing the chemical composition of nectar and honey will contribute to honey traceability, which has become a research hotspot in recent years. However, the rapid, green, and facile analytical methods without tedious chemical pretreatment remain to be developed. Herein, the extractive electrospray ionization high resolution-mass spectrometry (EESI-HRMS) was used to analyze the polyphenols and amino acids composition of the nectars and honeys from three Citrus species, and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV) was used to validate the results. 12 polyphenols and 8 amino acids were identified by EESI-HRMS, whilst 9 polyphenols were quantified by HPLC-UV. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the chemical composition of Citrus nectars was similar, and so do honeys, but the nectar and its corresponding honey were chemically differentiated. Accordingly, EESI-HRMS is a reliable analytical method for the analysis of samples with limited sources and complex composition, which contributes to the honey traceability.

Introduction: Citrus fruit is rich in important functional constituents such as flavonoids, phenolic acids terpenes and other functional substances that play an important role for treating clinical diseases or controlling major agricultural diseases and pests. Plant secondary metabolites have become one of the most important resources of novel lead compounds, especially young citrus fruits contain multiple functional substances. ‘Orah’, a type of citrus reticulata, is known for its fine appearance, productivity, delicious sweetness, late-maturing characteristics, and is widely cultivated in China. Fruit thinning and rootstock selection are commonly used agronomic measures in its production to ensure its quality and tree vigor. However, few studies have demonstrated the effects of these agronomic measures on the functional substances of ‘Orah’.Methods: In this study, we used HPLC coupled with UV to detect the dynamic changes of fruit quality, 13 main flavonoids, 7 phenolic acids, 2 terpenes, synephrine and antioxidant capacity in both peel and pulp of citrus fruits grafted on four rootstocks (Red orange Citrus reticulata Blanco cv. red tangerine, Ziyang xiangcheng Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka, Trifoliate orange Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf, and Carrizo citrange Citrus sinensis Osb.×P.trifoliate Raf) at six different developmental stages (from 90 DAF to 240 DAF).Results: The results indicated that rootstock can significantly affect the contents of functional constituents and antioxidant capacity in ‘Orah’. Additionally, it was found that pruning at either 90 DAF (days after flowering) or 150 DAF produced the most favorable outcomes for extracting functional substances. We also identified rootstock ‘Trifoliate orange’ has the highest total soluble solids (TSS) and ‘Ziyang xiangcheng’ to be the optimal in terms of comprehensive sensory of fruit quality, while ‘Red orange’ and ‘Ziyang xiangcheng’ are optimal in terms of functional substance quality, and ‘Red orange’ excels in antioxidant capacity.Discussion: Overall, the findings demonstrate the important role of rootstocks and developmental stage in shaping fruit sensory quality and functional substance synthesis, providing valuable insights for guiding rootstock selection, determining thinning time, and utilizing pruned fruits in a more informed manner.

Four Chinese herbs from theCitrusgenus, namely Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi), Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi) and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), are widely used for treating various cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases. Many ingredients have already been identified from these herbs, and their various bioactivities provide some interpretations for the pharmacological functions of these herbs. However, the complex functions of these herbs imply undisclosed cholinergic activity. To discover some ingredients with cholinergic activity and further clarify possible reasons for the complex pharmacological functions presented by these herbs, depending on the extended structure–activity relationships of cholinergic and anti-cholinergic agents, a simple method was established here for quickly discovering possible choline analogs using a specific TLC method, and then stachydrine and choline were first identified from theseCitrusherb decoctions based on their NMR and HRMS data. After this, two TLC scanning (TLCS) methods were first established for the quantitative analyses of stachydrine and choline, and the contents of the two ingredients and synephrine in 39 samples were determined using the valid TLCS and HPLC methods, respectively. The results showed that the contents of stachydrine (3.04‰) were 2.4 times greater than those of synephrine (1.25‰) inZhiqiaoand about one-third to two-thirds of those ofZhishi,QingpiandChenpi. Simultaneously, the contents of stachydrine, choline and synephrine in these herbs present similar decreasing trends with the delay of harvest time; e.g., those of stachydrine decrease from 5.16‰ (Zhishi) to 3.04‰ (Zhike) and from 1.98‰ (Qingpi) to 1.68‰ (Chenpi). Differently, the contents of synephrine decrease the fastest, while those of stachydrine decrease the slowest. Based on these results, compared with the pharmacological activities and pharmacokinetics reported for stachydrine and synephrine, it is indicated that stachydrine can be considered as a bioactive equilibrist for synephrine, especially in the cardio-cerebrovascular protection from these citrus herbs. Additionally, the results confirmed that stachydrine plays an important role in the pharmacological functions of these citrus herbs, especially in dual-directionally regulating the uterus, and in various beneficial effects on the cardio-cerebrovascular system, kidneys and liver. Keywords:choline;Citrus;method;analysis;decoction;Aurantii Fructus Immaturus;Aurantii Fructus;effect;cardiovascular protection;uterus

Species of the genus Citrus are cultivated in many regions of China and are widely used for medicinal purposes. In the present study, essential oils (EOs) were extracted from four different Citrus species using steam distillation. The chemical components of these four essential oils were separated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and 52 compounds were confirmed. D-limonene was found to be the most abundant compound. All four essential oils demonstrated varied but remarkable radical scavenging capacity (IC 50 ; 0.77–13.9 %). Citrus paradisi essential oil exhibited excellent antioxidant activity. Compared to ibuprofen, topical application of the four Citrus spp. essential oils significantly inhibited ear edema formation in mice. Furthermore, essential oils from the four Citrus species reduced the expression levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and nuclear transcription factor kappa B p65 (NF-κB) to different degrees. The cytotoxicity of the four essential oils on BV 2 microglial cells was determined using the MTT assay (IC 50 ; 321.37–1558.87 μg/mL), wherein Citrus limon essential oil showed the lowest cytotoxicity. The essential oils of Citrus limon , Citrus reticulata , and Citrus paradisi had an inhibitory effect on the lung cancer cell lines H1299 by inducing a G0/G1 cell cycle arrest. Cluster and principal component analyses were used to determine the relationship among the Citrus species. These results suggest that the four Citrus essential oils have potential for use as active ingredients in functional foods or cosmeceutical products. Graphical

In this study, comprehensive and systematic nontargeted metabolomics analysis was performed with the metabolites of Zangju peel ( Citrus reticulata cv. Manau Gan, CRZP, which has been cultivated for over 400 years in Derong County, China.) at four different mature stages. A total of 1878 metabolites were identified, among which flavonoids were the most abundant (62.04 %), and identified 62 key differential metabolites significantly affected by maturity. Based on biological activity measurements, CRZP showed better antioxidant activity, lipase inhibition ability, inhibition of adipogenic differentiation in 3TT-L1 cells and promotion of lipid metabolism, with the biological activity of CRZP at different maturity stages being associated with key differential metabolite. Thus, CRZP is natural antioxidants and possess anti-obesity potential, and industrial production needs to consider the Maturity stage of its collection.

Scope This study aims to investigate the anticancer properties of Citrus grandis ‘Tomentosa’ (CGT) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods and results The ethanol extract of CGT (CGTE) is prepared by using anhydrous ethanol and analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), revealing that the main chemical components in CGTE are flavonoids and coumarins, such as naringin, rhoifolin, apigenin, bergaptol, and osthole. CGTE at concentrations without inducing cell death significantly inhibits cell proliferation via inducing cell cycle G1 phase arrest by MTT, colony formation, and flow cytometry assays, implying that CGT has anticancer potential. CGTE markedly inhibits the activity of Skp2-SCF E3 ubiquitin ligase, decreases the protein level of Skp2, and promotes the accumulation of p27 by co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) and in vivo ubiquitination assay; whereas Skp2 overexpression rescues the effects of CGTE in NSCLC cells. In subcutaneous LLC allograft and A549 xenograft mouse models, CGTE, without causing obvious side effects in mice, significantly inhibits lung tumor growth by targeting the Skp2/p27 signaling pathway. Conclusion These findings demonstrate that CGTE efficiently inhibits NSCLC proliferation both in vitro and in vivo by targeting the Skp2/p27 signaling pathway, suggesting that CGTE may serve as a therapeutic candidate for NSCLC treatment.

In this paper, a kind of superabsorbent resin (SAR) with superior quality for hygiene products was developed using Fructus Aurantii Immaturus pectin (FAIP) from Citrus aurantium L.. FAIP-g-AM/AMPS SAR was established by free radical graft co -polymerization with FAIP as skeleton structure, N, N′-Methylene-bis (acrylamide) (MBA) as the cross-linker. Meanwhile, the functional monomers of acrylamide (AM) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) were introduced. The structure and morphology of FAIP-g-AM/AMPS were characterized by FTIR , 13 C NMR, XRD, SEM and TG-DSC analysis. The results confirmed that the AFIP-g-AM/AMPS SAR was successfully prepared, which exhibited a three-dimensional (3D) network structure and an excellent thermal stability . The absorption and retention capacity of FAIP-g-AM/AMPS was comparable to or even better than commercial diapers and sanitary napkins. Significantly, FAIP-g-AM/AMPS itself exhibited excellent antibacterial and safety. FAIP-g-AM/AMPS has an inhibition ratio of 97.1 % for Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and 98.5 % for Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), and was non-irritating and non-allergic to the skin. In addition, FAIP-g-AM/AMPS presented amazing biodegradability and a weight loss reached 37.1 % after 30 days by soil burial test. The research provides a safe and high-performance SAR, which expected to be used in hygiene products such as baby diapers, adult incontinence pads and sanitary napkins.
