Flotation Separation of Cassiterite from Calcite Using Low-Molecular-Weight Citrus Pectin as Depressant

Chenyang Yao,Yachao Li,Peng Li,Xiaokui Che,Guosheng Li,Fanfan Zhang,Weijun Peng,Bozeng Wu,Guixia Fan

This paper presents the development of an environmentally friendly, small molecular depressant citrus pectin for improving the recovery of cassiterite resources. Citrus pectin extracted from citrus peel was utilized as the depressant, and it demonstrated significant potential in separating calcite from cassiterite in micro-flotation tests. The molecular weight of the citrus pectin extracted in this paper decreased from 11,485,412 Da to 32,959 Da compared to commercial pectin, resulting in the depressant efficiency of the reagent. The results of a zeta potential and adsorption test indicated that citrus pectin had less and weaker adsorption on the cassiterite surface and could be replaced with NaOL. The chemical adsorption process of citrus pectin on the surface of calcite was determined through FTIR spectroscopy analysis. XPS analysis results indicated that the interaction between the carboxyl groups of citrus pectin and calcium atoms enables adsorption to occur. The AFM revealed that citrus pectin displayed a uniform and dense pattern of point-like adsorption on the surface of calcite. Micro-flotation experiments showed that cassiterite recovery of 80% can be obtained at a citrus pectin dosage of 10 mg/L. Citrus pectin has the advantages of being low-cost, highly selective, and environmentally suitable, making it a promising alternative to conventional reagents.

Trans-2-hexenal/β-cyclodextrin effectively reduces green mold in citrus fruit

Yonghua Zhang,Qiuli OuYang,Bin Duan,Okwong Oketch Reymick,Yue Chen,Yuanzhen Tan,Xiangrong Zhu,Donglin Su,Gaoyang Li,Nengguo Tao

Green mold, caused by Penicillium digitatum , is the primary postharvest disease in citrus fruit. Trans -2-hexenal was found to exert a considerable inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of P. digitatum with a minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of 0.106 g L −1 . To overcome its hydrophobic restriction, a trans -2-hexenal- β -cyclodextrin inclusion complex ( β -CDIC) was prepared by the saturated aqueous solution method. In vitro assays revealed that the MFC of β -CDIC for P. digitatum mycelial growth was 1.00 g L −1 , and 10.0 g L −1 β -CDIC apparently reduced the incidence of green mold in citrus fruit inoculated with P. digitatum while maintaining fruit quality. The structure of β -CDIC was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric (TG), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyzes. The results showed that the H-1 proton of trans -2-hexenal correlated with the H-5′ proton of β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD), which was further confirmed by molecular docking analysis. The present study suggests that β -CDIC is a promising candidate for controlling postharvest diseases in citrus fruit.

Effects of Juvenile Hormone Analogue and Ecdysteroid on Adult Eclosion of the Fruit Fly Bactrocera minax (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Wang Jia,Zhou Hong-Yan,Zhao Zhi-Mo,Liu Ying-Hong

The univoltine Bactrocera minax (Enderlein) is a devastating pest of citrus in Nepal, India, Bhutan, and China. To better understand the overwintering pupal diapause, we investigated the juvenile hormone III (JH III) and ecdysteroid 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) titers across the developmental stages, and the effects of juvenile hormone analog (JHA) and 20E treatments on adult emergence patterns. The results showed that both JH III and 20E levels fluctuated from the late larval stage to the late pupal stage. JHA and 20E treatments at the late larval stage had marginal effect on the adult emergence patterns, with slightly faster adult eclosion and higher eclosion rate. Similarly, JHA treatment at the early pupal stage did not affect the adult emergence. However, 20E treatment at the early pupal stage remarkably shortened the duration of diapause, but lowered the eclosion rate, especially with relatively high dose. These findings demonstrated that 20E treatment at the early pupal stage is a suitable method to hasten the diapause termination of B. minax, which will contribute to the rearing of B. minax in the laboratory as needed for routine experiments.

Application of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose to improve the wettability of chitosan coating and its preservation performance on tangerine fruits

Qianyi Zhou,Shuangshuang Huang,Lina Zou,Dan Ren,Xiyu Wu,Dan Xu

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was employed as an intermediate layer to enhance interfacial interaction between chitosan (CS) coating and tangerine fruits, thereby improving the preservation effect. Owing to the low surface tension of tangerine fruit (26.04 mN/m), CS coating solutions showed poor wetting properties on fruit peels (contact angle > 100°). However, by applying a 1.0 % ( w / v ) HPMC coating on fruits, the contact angle of CS solutions with concentrations of 0.5 %, 1.0 %, and 1.5 % (w/v) decreased to 47.0°, 47.4°, and 48.5°, respectively, whereas the spreading coefficient increased to −16.0 mN/m, −17.6 mN/m and −19.8 mN/m, respectively. Subsequently, the effects of the coatings on fruit quality were investigated. The results demonstrated the promising performance of HPMC-CS two-layer coating in inhibiting fruit respiration, reducing decay rate, and maintaining nutrient content. Notably, HPMC-1.5%CS coating not only reduced the decay rate of tangerine fruit by 45 % and 31 %, in comparison to the uncoated group (CK) and pure CS coating respectively, but also maintained a high content of ascorbic acid. Therefore, this study confirmed that the use of amphiphilic polymers for improving the surface properties of fruits can effectively facilitate the wetting of hydrophilic coatings on fruits, and significantly improve the fresh-keeping performance of edible coatings.

Residues and Dietary Risk Assessment of Prohexadione-Ca and Uniconazole in Oryza sativa L. and Citrus reticulata Blanco by Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Hui Ye,Yuqin Luo,Yanjie Li,Xiangyun Wang,Hongmei He,Jinhua Jiang,Jianzhong Yu,Changpeng Zhang

A simple and sensitive method for the simultaneous quantitation of prohexadione-Ca and uniconazole in the field experiment ofOryza sativaL. andCitrus reticulataBlanco was established using solid-phase extraction (SPE) with polymer anion exchange (PAX) and Florisil followed by LC-MS/MS. The method demonstrated excellent linearity (R2> 0.999 0), trueness (recoveries between 95~105%), precision (CVs between 0.8~12%), sensitivity, and repeatability (LOQ of 0.05 and 0.01 mg/kg, respectively). Residue tests were conducted in the field at 12 representative sites in China, revealing final concentrations of prohexadione-Ca and uniconazole in brown rice, rice hull, and rice straw to be below 0.05 mg/kg, while in whole citrus fruit and citrus pulp, they were below 0.01 mg/kg. These were below the maximum residue limits specified in China. The chronic dietary risks of prohexadione-Ca and uniconazole in rice crops and citrus fruits were calculated to be 0.48% and 0.91%, respectively. Our research suggests that the chronic risk associated with the daily consumption of rice crops and citrus fruit at the recommended dosage is acceptable. Keywords:Oryza sativaL.;citrus fruit;dietary intake risk assessment;plant growth regulators

An inclusion complex of thymol into β-cyclodextrin and its antifungal activity against Geotrichum citri-aurantii

Shiwen Dou,Qiuli Ouyang,Kuiyi You,Jingjing Qian,Nengguo Tao

Thymol is a naturally occurring volatile terpenoid in plants that possesses strong antifungal activities against many pathogens. In this research, thymol was included into β -cyclodextrin and the antifungal activity of the resulting complex against Geotrichum citri-aurantii, the causal agent of sour rot in citrus fruit, was investigated. The inhibition concentration of the β -cyclodextrin-thymol inclusion complex ( β -CTIC) to G. citri-aurantii was estimated to be 4.0 g L −1 , which was supposed to be a comparable antifungal efficiency of 0.5 g L −1 thymol alone. The structure and characteristic of β -CTIC were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and entrapment efficiency (EE). The ROESY spectrum of β -CTIC showed appreciable correlation of H-1, H-4 and H-3 protons of thymol with the H-3′, H-5′ and H-6′ protons of β -cyclodextrin, respectively. In addition, β -CTIC was found to reduce the decay of citrus fruit inoculated with G. citri-aurantii and maintain the fruit quality. Our present study suggested that β -CTIC might be used as an alternative to chemical fungicides in controlling the postharvest sour rot of citrus fruit.

Different types of dietary fibers from citrus peels synergistically stabilize pickering emulsions

Yuyang Zhang,Jiefen Cui,Mengshan Shang,Yanqi Wang,Ting Liu,Jinkai Zheng

Citrus peels contain three main dietary fibers-cellulose (Cel), hemicellulose (Hem), and pectin (Pec)-which are widely used as bio-based materials but have limitations as sole emulsifiers in Pickering emulsions (PEs). In this study, Pec, Hem and Cel were extracted sequentially from citrus ( Citrus maxima ) peels and their chemical structures were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. The stabilizing effects of the three alone and in combination on PEs were compared systematically. The combination of Hem + Pec caused substantial emulsification and remained stable for 3 days without delamination, compared with individual component-stabilized emulsions. However, the Hem + Pec + Cel emulsification was weaker than that of Hem + Pec. Isothermal titration calorimetry and interfacial characterization revealed the presence of strong hydrogen bonding between Hem and Pec, which improved the wettability of the interface (contact angle 89.2°). In addition, the Hem + Pec interface had superior film thickness (160 nm), had good steric resistance, resulting in the formation of an ordered network structure in PE Hem + Pec . The droplet aggregation was effectively prevented, thus stabilizing PE Hem + Pec . These findings provide a scientific basis for the synergistic stabilizing effects of plant-derived dietary fibers on PEs, promoting the development of natural polysaccharide-based emulsifiers.

Characterization and recognition of citrus fruit spoilage fungi using Raman scattering spectroscopic imaging

Jianrong Cai,Caixia Zou,Limei Yin,Shuiquan Jiang,Hesham R. El-Seedi,Zhiming Guo

Citrus fruit is cultivated globally with a high production every year. However, it is easily infected by spoilage fungi with toxic metabolites. The mechanism of changes in peel tissues of mandarins was revealed by Raman microscopic imaging. Single Raman spectra , multiple Raman spectra and microscopic images of fresh fruits and infected fruits by spoilage fungi were acquired by confocal Raman microscopy. Intensity reduction of Raman characteristic peaks at 1008 cm −1 ,1154 cm −1 and 1525 cm −1 indicated the content of carotenoids in citrus fruit peels decreased significantly during the periods of fruit spoilage. The distribution and composition of carotenoids in the mandarins were directly illustrated on the visualized microscopic images. Classification algorithms were operated in discrimination on fresh and spoilage samples based on Raman spectra. Classification on fresh fruits and all spoiled fruits were better than that of identification on four levels (fresh samples, slight spoilage samples, medium spoilage samples and serious spoilage samples). Liner discriminant analysis (LDA) of mandarins infected by A. alternate achieved the optimal result, with correlation coefficients of calibration set and prediction set both reaching 100%. The correlation coefficients of samples infected by A. niger achieved 0.925 for calibration set and 0.900 for prediction set. Meanwhile, infected samples by P. italicum reached 0.842 and 0.800. Raman microscopic imaging was confirmed to be a powerful tool to identify compositional changes in fruits caused by spoilage fungi without chemical treatments.

Furanocoumarin profiles and inhibitory effects on cytochrome P450 activity of whole citrus fruit

Sun Yujing,Wang Yihua,Zhang Le,Ye Xingqian,Guo Jingtong

Furanocoumarins in citrus fruit can cause adverse drug interactions, however, there are few reports on furanocoumarins and drug interactions in common edible citrus cultivars except grapefruit. A UPLC-based method for ten furanocoumarins in citrus fruit was established and impacts on cytochrome P450 activity were investigated. Furanocoumarins were more abundant (2–43 times) in the peel than in the pulp. The pulp of Xiyou, Hongyou and Navel orange exhibited P450 inhibition with IC50 values of 0.63, 0.67 and 1.02 mg/mL, respectively. The peel of most varieties except Huyou and Satsuma exhibited P450 inhibition. Xiyou, Huangjinyou, Baiyou, Hongyou, Ponkan and Navel orange had IC50 values of 0.33, 0.38, 0.76, 0.35, 0.43 and 0.37 mg/mL, respectively. These findings indicate that the consumption of the pulp of popular Chinese varieties of citrus fruit except for Xiyou, Hongyou and Navel orange has a low risk of drug interactions, and use of citrus products including peel may carry a significant risk of adverse drug interactions.

Fabrication, characterization and mechanistic exploration of zein/pectin binary nanocomplex by a one-step and organic solvent free technique

Lingyuan Wang,Diandian Huang,Keting Li,Yan Dai,Angxin Song,Laping He,Xingyi Chen,Lei Wang

Previous studies have shown that the organic solvent-free method has considerable potential for delivery systems in food applications. In this study, Nanocomplex of zein and pectin from apple (AP) or citrus (CP) was systemically fabricated and characterized by adjusting pectin pH (2.0–11.0) and mass ratios of zein:pectin (1:0, 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) via one-step pH-shifted process. Results showed that the size of zein/pectin nanocomplex remarkably decreased from >500 nm to ∼150 nm with the increasing pH level of pectin solution and proportion of pectin addition. Spherical shape was observed for nanocomplex formed by AP and CP in transmission electron microscopy images. Compared with zein/AP nanocomplex , zein/CP nanocomplex exhibited the smaller size, smoother surface and lower surface hydrophobicity, prompting us to conclude that CP, as compared to AP, had better performance. To further explore the mechanism, the behavior difference could be interpreted by the altered hydrophobic interaction between zein and pectin as revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Findings in this study would facilitate the understanding of interaction between zein and pectin and provide new perspectives of pH-shift induced zein nanocomplex.

In situ formed and fully integrated laser-induced graphene electrochemical chips for rapid and simultaneous determination of bioflavonoids in citrus fruits

Hong-qi Xia,Diyang Qiu,Wanbing Chen,Genlin Mao,Jiwu Zeng

Rapid and sensitive determination of bioflavonoids in agricultural products is an important issue in food production, pharmaceutical industry and modern precision agriculture. In this study, a novel and fully integrated electrochemical chip for simultaneous determination of bioflavonoids in citrus fruits was for the first time developed by in situ formed laser-induced graphene (LIG) at polyimide sheets. Effects of laser power on the surface morphology and structural characteristics as well as electrochemical activity of LIG were investigated. Subsequently, electrocatalysis of naringin and hesperidin at LIG electrodes was realized and kinetic analysis was then conducted to investigate the detail electrode process. Finally, a fully integrated LIG electrochemical chips for rapid determination of naringin and hesperidin were fabricated. As-prepared LIG electrochemical chips demonstrated a low detection limit, large linear range, good selectivity and acceptable reproducibility for both analytes. Furthermore, electrochemical tests on solutions containing Citrus grandis “ Tomentosa ” (CGT) extract showed that the as-prepared LIG electrochemical chips had a high reliability and validity, as well as an acceptable recovery, and therefore could be used in practical applications.

Preparation and prebiotic potential of pectin oligosaccharides obtained from citrus peel pectin

Shanshan Zhang,Haijuan Hu,Lufeng Wang,Fengxia Liu,Siyi Pan

Pectin oligosaccharide (POS) fractions were obtained by controlled chemical degradation of citrus peel pectin. By adjusting trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) concentration, three oligosaccharides were obtained, of molecular weight (Mw) range 3000–4000 Da, 2000–3000 Da and lower than 2000 Da. Varying hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) concentration and reaction time produced oligosaccharides of 3000–4000 Da and 2000–3000 Da. The relative proportions of acidic monosaccharide increased from 68.58% to 89.93% (TFA) and from 63.74% to 83.26% (H 2 O 2 ) as the reaction conditions intensified. Prebiotic activity scores were used to quantify POS ability to promote selective growth of specific probiotics. Sample POS H1 from H 2 O 2 degradation showed the highest prebiotic potential with prebiotic activity score 0.41 for Lactobacillus paracasei LPC-37 and 0.92 for Bifidobacterium bifidum ATCC 29521.
