Ionogels are promising soft materials for flexible wearable devices because of their unique features such as ionic conductivity and thermal stability. Ionogels reported to date show excellent sensing sensitivity; however, they suffer from a complicated external power supply. Herein, we report a self-powered wearable device based on an ionogel incorporating poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The three-dimensional (3D) printed PVDF-ionogel exhibits amazing stretchability (1500%), high conductivity (0.36 S/m at 105 Hz), and an extremely low glass transition temperature (−84 °C). Moreover, the flexible wearable devices assembled from the PVDF-ionogel can precisely detect physiological signals (e.g., wrist, gesture, running, etc.) with a self-powered supply. Most significantly, a self-powered wireless flexible wearable device based on our PVDF-ionogel achieves monitoring healthcare of a human by transmitting obtained signals with a Bluetooth module timely and accurately. This work provides a facile and efficient method for fabricating cost-effective wireless wearable devices with a self-powered supply, enabling their potential applications for healthcare, motion detection, human–machine interfaces, etc.

Hydrogels are considered to be ideal materials for the preparation of preoperative models and flexible wearable devices due to their softness and plasticity. However, there are still some problems in their application, such as how to achieve the construction of complex spatial structures through 3D printing and poor mechanical properties of the gel, especially poor tear resistance will greatly shorten the service life of hydrogels. In this study, with acrylamide (AM), stearyl methacrylate (SMA) and Multi-arm Crosslinking Agent (AGE-M) as the main raw materials, we provided a tear-resistance gel that can be photocurable for 3D printing. Through digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing, various gel-based preoperative models and devices with complex structures can be prepared. More importantly, the printed gel is endowed with excellent tear resistance by introducing the AGE-M as a nanoscale high-functionality crosslinker. In addition, the conductive substance sodium chloride is introduced to make the gel have a certain conductivity, and the organic solvent glycerol is introduced to replace part of the water to form a binary phase organic solvent, which endows the gel with excellent anti-drying and anti-freezing properties, to be suitable for more environments. Therefore, this work proposes a tear-resistance gel processed by DLP-based 3D printing technology, which can be used for the personalized manufacturing of organ models and flexible wearable devices, and is expected to be used in surgical training and artificial intelligence.

The polypyrrole/cross-linked collagen sponge (PPy/CCS) was synthesized through in-situ polymerization of PPy nanoparticles onto the collagen skeleton composed of mesoscopic collagen aggregates (CAs) as building blocks, which was employed as a sensing material. The structure and morphology of PPy/CCS were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermal analysis (TA). The conductivity and mechanical properties of PPy/CCS can be regulated by adjusting the polymerization conditions. The PPy/CCS treated with glycerin aqueous solution exhibits exceptional recovery performance under 10,000 compression stress cycles, with a short response time of 420 ms and recovery time of 400 ms, along with high sensitivity of 1.13 kPa −1 within a control pressure range of 0–43 kPa. The assembled PPy/CCS-based sensors enable monitoring of human movement behavior and achieving multi-touch control, thereby demonstrating significant potential in flexible wearable devices and human–machine interaction.

Flexible wearable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has attracted immense interest in various application scenarios due to its intrinsic self-powered characteristics. Recently, rubbers with high elasticity are frequently reported to be favored substrates for wearable smart devices to enhance body comfort and contact effects. However, most commercial rubbers are nonpolar and lack of enough polar functional groups even after physical and chemical modification to earn satisfactory surface charge density for high triboelectric performance. Moreover, the combination of high triboelectric and mechanical properties is still a significant challenge for flexible TENG material. In this work, a flexible triboelectric rubber with tunable surface charge density and excellent mechanical properties is demonstrated via a natural polymer assisted dispersion of perovskite nanofiller strategy. The designed rubber-based TENG shows an excellent 310 V triboelectric output, 106 nC transferred charge and 6.14 W·m −2 power density, as well as a favorable mechanical property of 10.69 MPa Young’s modulus and 211 % strain. The material can harvest mechanical energy and charge 1 μF commercial capacitors to 1.8 V in 60 s from nature. When serves as flexible device, it can also self-powered to real-time monition various human behavior and distinguish different speed of vehicle driving conditions. We expect our works will provide a feasible strategy to significantly improve the comprehensive performance of flexible wearable rubber-based TENG and advance the potential application of rubber.

With the rapid development of electronic science and technology, the demand for portable and flexible energy supply strategies become urgent. Fiber supercapacitors attract extensive attention due to their lightweight, fast charge-discharge and excellent safety, which can be considered as potential energy storage devices to power electronic watches and the human motion monitoring system. MnO 2 shows high theoretical specific capacity, excellent physical/chemical stability and environmental friendliness, showing a broad application prospect as electrochemical active materials. This work proposes an optimal design strategy for MnO 2 -based fiber supercapacitors: β-MnO 2 and γ-MnO 2 are chosen as electrochemical active materials respectively, and the fiber electrode as well as fiber supercapacitors are fabricated via coaxial wet spinning. According to the results, γ-MnO 2 fiber supercapacitor presents the maximum C L of 0.86 μF/cm, E L of 9.65 10 −5 μWh/cm and P L of 0.33 μW/cm. After 10,000 charge/discharge cycles, the fiber supercapacitor can maintain the high level of consistency, demonstrating excellent long-term reliability. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of the obtained fiber supercapacitors is almost unaffected in bending or knotting situations, indicating outstanding mechanical strength as well as flexibility. This work provides an effective basis for reliable design of fiber supercapacitors and promotes their application in flexible smart wearable field in the future.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels are a class of important materials for the preparation of flexible sensors, but the development of UV/stress dual-responsive ion-conductive hydrogels with excellent tunability for wearable devices remains a major challenge. In this study, a dual-responsive multifunctional ion-conductive hydrogel (PVA-GEL-GL-Mo7) with high tensile strength, good stretchability, outstanding flexibility, and stability is successfully fabricated. The prepared hydrogel has an excellent tensile strength of 2.2 MPa, high tenacity of 5.26 MJ/m3, favorable extensibility (522%), and high transparency of 90%. Importantly, the hydrogels have dual responsiveness to UV light and stress, allowing it to be used as a wearable device while responding differently to the UV intensity of different outdoor environments (hydrogels can show different levels of color when exposed to different light intensities of UV light) and can remain flexible at −50 and 85 °C (sensing at both −25 and 85 °C). Therefore, the hydrogels developed in this study have good prospects in different applications, such as flexible wearable devices, duplicate paper, and dual-responsive interactive devices.

The latest generation of wearable devices features materials that are flexible, conductive, and stretchable, thus meeting the requirements of stability and reliability. However, the metal conductors that are currently used in various equipments cannot achieve these high performance expectations. Hence, a mussel-inspired conductive hydrogel (HAC–B–PAM) is prepared with a facile approach by employing polyacrylamide (PAM), dopamine-functionalized hyaluronic acid (HAC), borax as a dynamic cross-linker agent, and Li + and Na + as conductive ions. HAC–B–PAM hydrogels demonstrate an excellent stretchability (up to 2800%), high tensile toughness (42.4 kPa), self-adhesive properties (adhesion strength to porcine skin of 49.6 kPa), and good self-healing properties without any stimuli at room temperature. Furthermore, the fabricated hydrogel-based strain sensor is sensitive to deformation and can detect human body motion. Multifunctional hydrogels can be assembled into flexible wearable devices with potential applications in the field of electronic skin and soft robotics.

The highly flexible wearable device for human-machine interaction is a burgeoning technology that has garnered considerable attention among researchers. However, current wearable devices such as data gloves, wrist bands and exoskeleton devices require additional fixation aids, which interfere with the users’ movements and cause discomfort. Here, a flexible on-skin triboelectric sensor is developed for high-precision human-machine interaction, which is in the form of a thin film containing a soft substrate and two triboelectric layers with mismatched elastic modulus . The on-skin triboelectric sensors can be mounted on the forearm epidermis by their own adhesion, which is rarely perceptible and does not impede hand and wrist mobility. On the basis, the sensors can accurately measure the tiny deformations caused by muscle movement. Meanwhile, a heterogeneous parallel channel fusion (HPCF) model is proposed for advanced signal processing and recognition of sensor data, where varying signal features are extracted by different-sized convolutional kernels. The human-machine interaction system by combining the on-skin triboelectric sensors and algorithm achieves up to 99.12% accuracy when identifying 26 distinct gestures, which holds vast potential in several areas, such as gesture recognition, virtual reality, and teleoperation .

Flexible and multifunctional sensors are in demand in various fields, but achieving excellent sensitivity and an extensive operational range poses a challenge. Here, we developed a flexible strain sensor using a cost-effective dip-coating method, incorporating microcracked synergistic indium tin oxide nanoparticles (ITO NPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a conductive layer. Utilizing an elastic rubber core string as the stretchable substrate and Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as an interfacial modifier, we established connectivity between the substrate and conductive layer. After encapsulation with polydimethylsiloxane, the ITO NPs/CNTs/rubber fiber (ICRF) strain sensor was fabricated. This sensor demonstrates a broad sensing range (0 ∼ 300 %), remarkable sensitivity (GF=1033.57), swift response/recovery times (174.55 ms/180.27 ms), and exceptional durability and stability (>2000 cycles). Moreover, it proves effective for human motion detection, underscoring its potential in flexible and wearable devices. Finally, precise responses of the mechanical claw’s posture and grasping demonstrate its potential applications across multiple fields.

Flexible wearable sensors based on conductive hydrogels are attracting increasing interest. To meet the urgent demands of sustainability and eco-friendliness, biopolymer-based physically crosslinked hydrogels have drawn great attention. Starch has a great potential due to its renewability, biocompatibility, nontoxicity and low cost. However, poor mechanical property, low conductivity and lack of versatility are seriously limiting the applications of starch-based hydrogels in wearable sensors. Moreover, the development of starch hydrogel-based wearable sensors in harsh conditions remains a challenge. Herein, multifunctional and physical crosslinking hydrogels were developed by introducing ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium acetate) and metal salt (AlCl 3 ) into starch/polyvinyl alcohol double-network structure. The hydrogel exhibited excellent stretchability (567%), tensile strength (0.53 MPa), high conductivity (2.75 S·m −1 ), good anti-freezing, antibacterial and anti-swelling properties. A wearable sensor assembled from the starch-based hydrogel exhibited a wide working range, high sensitivity (gauge factor: 5.93) and excellent reversibility. Due to the versatility, the sensor effectively detected human motion in normal and underwater environment, and possessed a sensitive pressure and thermal response. Overall, the present work provided a promising route to develop multifunctional and “green” biopolymer-based hydrogels for wearable sensors in human health and sporting applications.

Flexible, stretchable, and wearable fabric strain sensors can easily detect human motions and monitor human health, but their utility is limited by poor stability and sensing performance. The stability and sensing performances of the fabric strain sensors are invariably determined by the fabric and conductive materials. Here, a Ti 3 C 2 T x /polypyrrole (PPy) nylon strain sensor is fabricated using a facile one-step polymerization of pyrrole (Py) monomers in the presence of Ti 3 C 2 T x suspension at 0 ° C. The Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets/PPy nanospheres heterostructure adhered to the nylon substrate inhibits mutual agglomeration and stacking, which provides more electron transfer pathways. The nylon substrate and two conductive materials endow the sensor with excellent stretchability (50%), low resistance (80 Ω cm −1 ), fast response (40 ms), and recovery (70 ms), a wide sensing range (0–50%), and long-term sensing function (2000 cycles). With these virtues, the prepared Ti 3 C 2 T x /PPy nylon sensor can monitor human activities effectively, including joint bending (finger, elbow, and knee) and subtle motions (carotid pulse, slight pressing, and speaking vibrations). The flexible and highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x /PPy strain sensor exhibits a promising sensing performance against the external strain, allowing it to be used in health-care monitoring.

Quasi-solid-state ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) cells have attracted increasing interest due to their high thermopower and easy solution processability for flexible and wearable thermoelectric devices. However, many i-TE gels have drawbacks of a narrow working temperature range (ΔTmax) and low power density. In this study, we introduced glutaraldehyde into the gelatin-KCl-FeCN4−/3− matrix, forming strong covalent bonds and interconnected porous structures, which significantly improve ΔTmax from 9 °C to 23 °C. The formed gelatin/GTA polymer network increases the entropy difference between the redox couples of FeCN4−/3−, thereby enhancing its thermopower. For the first time, a high thermopower of 24.7 mV K−1, a record-high power density of 9.6 mW m−2 K−2 and a 2 h energy density (E2h) of 198 J m−2 are achieved simultaneously in a quasi-solid-state i-TE cell. The i-TE cell exhibits good cycling performance in long-term power generation, corresponding to an average E2h value of 175 J m−2 after the whole cycling process. A flexible and wearable device consisting of 16 i-TE cells can generate a high voltage of 3.6 V and an output power of 115 μW by harvesting body heat. This work provides a general route to increase the working temperature range and output power density of gel-based i-TE cells through a molecular-level approach.
