Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) can serve as building blocks and interfaces in designing functional materials. Here, the use of PDA as an interlayer between polyaniline (PANi) and multidimensional carbon materials, such as graphene quantum dots (GQD), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and graphene nanosheets (GNS), to improve the thermoelectric performance of p-type polymer-based materials has been reported. The introduction of PDA promotes the carrier mobility of GQD/PDA/PANi, CNT/PDA/PANi, and GNS/PDA/PANi ternary composites due to the superior adhesive property of PDA. An optimal conductivity of 4.98 × 104 S m–1 and a power factor of 92.17 μW m–1 K–2 at 363 K are achieved in GNS/PDA/PANi, which are much higher than the values of GNS/PDA and GNS/PANi. More surprisingly, despite the fact that GQD/PDA, CNT/PDA, and GNS/PDA binary composites show p-type properties, the pyrolysis treatment of GQD/PDA, CNT/PDA, and GNS/PDA at 800 °C results in a gain in both the electrical conductivity and negative Seebeck coefficient of c-GQD/PDA, c-CNT/PDA, and c-GNS/PDA. The c-CNT/PDA composites possess the highest Seebeck value of −30.2 μV K–1 and a maximum power factor value of 35.57 μW m–1 K–2. Finally, a flexible thermoelectric generator with 24 thermoelectric units composed of GNS/PDA/PANi and c-CNT/PDA is demonstrated, which gives an output voltage of 52.8 mV at a temperature difference of 60 °C.

The interface is always a critical factor affecting thermoelectric performance in composite systems . However, understanding the electrical and thermal transport behaviors at the interfaces has been a long-standing challenge. Here, we advance this understanding by using spatially resolved current and thermal measurements in single wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-Tellurium-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) nanocomposites . Our results indicate that the obtained ultra-low thermal conductivity in such nanocomposites with high CNTs content can be understood by the interface thermal resistance and interface density of the clusters, which is directly confirmed by quantitative mappings of thermal conductivity in the micro-scale interface regions via scanning thermal microscopy. Furthermore, the highly conductive layers can be formed at the interfaces of Te - PEDOT:PSS and CNTs - PEDOT:PSS revealed by high-resolution local conductivity and topography mapping, leading to simultaneous enhancement of electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient . Ultimately, a power factor of 224 µW/mK 2 , as well as an ultralow in-plane thermal conductivity of 0.39 W/mK at 410 K, has been achieved by tuning carrier mobility and phonon scattering using multiple polymer-inorganic interfaces. The ZT value reaches up to 0.24 at 410 K and a planar flexible thermoelectric generator exhibits excellent output power of 1.33 μW and highly competitive normalized maximum power density of 0.26 W/m at a temperature difference of 67.8 K These approaches give deep insights to understand the interface role in nanocomposites, and also attests to the great potential of using such organic–inorganic composites in wearable electronics .

Flexible thermoelectric generators (TEGs) provide a sustainable solution for directly harvesting low-grade heat from various curved surfaces, presenting a promising potential for feeding energy to personal-electronics or internet-of-things systems. Nevertheless, the room-temperature millivolt output of the cutting-edge all-solid-state flexible material-based TEGs (AF-TEGs) is still unappeasable for flexible electronics in practical applications. Here, we report on an AF-TEG consisting of a 3-level structure based on thin-film carbon nanotube (CNT) assemblies that can generate a high voltage (1.05 V) and sufficient outpower (0.95 mW) at moderate ΔT (~44 and 39 K, respectively) for powering an electrochromic device . The advanced nature of the AF-TEG is that conformation is highly adaptive and programmable, showing the surface suitability which can capture waste heat in both in-plane and out-of-plane direction. Moreover, an AF-TEG power management scheme is proposed for powering a commercial LED and an electronic thermometer, which indicate promising potential for practical applications.

Flexible thermoelectric generators (FTEGs) can harvest energy from the human body to supply energy to wearable electronic devices. Here, we present a long-term health monitoring bracelet integrated with FTEG, an energy management system (EMS), and a health monitoring system (HMS). Based on the optimized nanostructured compound with a composition of Bi 0.5 Sb 1.469 Ga 0.03 Cu 0.002 Te 3.1575 , the bulk-based FTEG achieved a power density of 88.9 μW cm −2 on the surface of the body at an ambient temperature of 17.6°C. Using a low quiescent current consumption switch, an integrated EMS circuit with a high average efficiency of 60.6% and an ultralow self-startup voltage of 20 mV was designed to boost the unstable voltage.

Light-weight, mechanically flexible, transparent thermoelectric devices are promising as portable, and easy-to-integrate energy sources. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) nanowires (PEDOT NWs) possessing high electrical conductivity were synthesized by a facile self-assembled micellar soft-template method. And then, Te nanowires (Te NWs) with high Seebeck coefficient were easily synthesized by the solution process and then added as an inorganic filler to form the PEDOT NW/Te NW nanocomposite films via a simple and convenient vacuum filtration method. The thermoelectric (TE) properties of the nanocomposites were characterized in this research. A maximum power factor of 58.03 μW m−1 K−2 is obtained from the film containing 90 wt% Te NWs at room temperature, which is dozens of times that of the pure PEDOT NW film. This work uses the as-prepared PEDOT NWs/Te NW (90 wt%) nanocomposite film to fabricate a flexible thermoelectric generator and an output voltage of 2.8 mV was generated at a temperature difference of 13.5 K between the environment and human body.

Intensifying the severity of electromagnetic (EM) pollution in the environment represents a significant threat to human health and results in considerable energy wastage. Here, we provide a strategy for electricity generation from heat generated by electromagnetic wave radiation captured from the surrounding environment that can reduce the level of electromagnetic pollution while alleviating the energy crisis. We prepared a porous, elastomeric, and lightweight Bi2Te3/carbon aerogel (CN@Bi2Te3) by a simple strategy of induced in situ growth of Bi2Te3 nanosheets with three-dimensional (3D) carbon structure, realizing the coupling of electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) and thermoelectric (TE) properties. With ultra-low thermal conductivity (0.07 W m–1 K–1), the CN@Bi2Te3 composites achieved a minimum reflection loss (RL) of 51.30 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.20 GHz at an optimal thickness of 2.8 mm. Additionally, under a temperature gradient of 80 K, the flexible thermoelectric generator (FTEG) system generates a maximum output power of 42.2 μW. By absorbing 2.45 GHz microwaves to build the temperature difference, the EMA-TE-coupled device achieves an optimal Uoc of 38.4 mV, a short-circuit current of 1.03 mA, and an output power of 9.87 μW upon a radiation time of 50 s. This work establishes a potential pathway for further recycling electromagnetic energy in the environment, which is also promising for the preparation of large-area flexible EM to electrical energy conversion devices.

Herein, we fabricated an Ag/Ag2Se composite film on a flexible nylon membrane with a high power factor and excellent flexibility. First, Ag nanoparticles and multiscale Ag2Se nanostructure composite powders were prepared by wet chemical synthesis using Se nanowires, silver nitrate, and l-ascorbic acid as raw materials, followed by vacuum-assisted filtration of the composite powders on a porous nylon membrane and then hot pressing. The optimized composite film shows a very high power factor of 1860.6 μW m–1 K–2 (with a corresponding electrical conductivity of 3958 S cm–1) at room temperature. The composite film retains 93.3% of the original electrical conductivity after 1000 bending cycles around a rod with a diameter of 8 mm. At a temperature difference of 27 K, an 8-leg thermoelectric prototype device assembled with the optimized composite film generates a maximum power of 7.14 μW with a corresponding power density of 8.74 W m–2. This work provides a new strategy to synthesize flexible thermoelectric films with both a high power factor and high electrical conductivity.

In recent years, the preparation of flexible thermoelectric generators by screen printing has attracted wide attention due to easy processing and high-volume production. In this work, we propose an n-type Ag2Se/polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) film based on screen printing and investigate the effect of PVP on thermoelectric performance by varying the ratio of PVP. When the content ratio of Ag2Se to PVP is 30:1, i.e., PI30, the fabricated PI30 film has the best thermoelectric property. The maximum power factor (PF) of the PI30 is 4.3 μW·m−1·K−2, and conductivity reaches 81% of its initial value at 1500 bending cycles. Then, the film thermoelectric generator (F-TEG) fabricated by PI30 is tested for practical application; the output voltage and the maximum output power are 21.6 mV and 233.3 nW at the temperature difference of 40 K, respectively. This work demonstrates that the use of PVP combined with screen printing to prepare F-TEG is a simple and rapid method, which provides an efficient preparation solution for the development of environmentally friendly and wearable flexible thermoelectric devices.

Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) based on organic/inorganic nanocomposites have made great achievements in recent years, while rational design of flexible TEGs to harvest energy via cross-plane heat flux remains a great challenge. Herein, flexible poly(3,4-ethylenedioxytiophene)-tosylate/Te/single-walled carbon nanotubes (PEDOT-Tos/Te/SWCNTs) ternary nanocomposite films with unique layered structure are synthesized, exhibiting an optimized power factor of 131.9 ± 8.5 µW m –1 K –2 that is ≈120 times of that of the pristine PEDOT-Tos. A spiral architecture is subsequently proposed to assemble the nanocomposite films into 3D TEGs, resulting in device-level flexibility, stretchability, and compressibility. The spiral-like TEGs can realize efficient heat-to-electricity conversion through cross-plane heat flux, and large output powers of 7.04 and 9.59 µW are achieved for the TEG prototypes with 10 p-type legs and 5 pairs of p-n couples, respectively, under a temperature difference of 80 K, surpassing most reported TEGs using Te-based composites. They can also provide stable energy output upon multiple stretching and compressing cycles. Furthermore, the spiral-like TEGs are demonstrated versatile applications to harvest human body heat on wrist, and to generate electricity via the temperature difference induced by hot water or liquid nitrogen. This work offers a promising route to exploit thermoelectric composites for flexible and wearable applications.

Flexible thermoelectric generators (FTEGs), which can overcome the energy supply limitations of wearable devices, have received considerable attention. However, the use of toxic Te-based materials and fracture-prone electrodes constrains the application of FTEGs. In this study, a novel Ag2Se and Poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) FTEG with a high output performance and good flexibility is developed. The thermoelectric columns formulated in the work are environmentally friendly and reliable. The key enabler of this work is the use of embedded EGaIn electrodes, which increase the temperature difference collected by the thermoelectric column, thereby improving the FTEG output performance. Additionally, the embedded EGaIn electrodes could be directly printed on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds without wax paper, which simplifies the preparation process of FTEGs and enhances the fabrication efficiency. The FTEG with embedded electrodes exhibits the highest output power density of 25.83 μW/cm2and the highest output power of 10.95 μW at ΔT= 15 K. The latter is 31.6% higher than that of silver-based FTEGs and 2.5% higher than that of covered EGaIn-based FTEGs. Moreover, the prepared FTEG has an excellent flexibility (>1500 bends) and output power stability (>30 days). At high humidity and high temperature, the prepared FTEG maintains good performance. These results demonstrate that the prepared FTEGs can be used as a stable and environmentally friendly energy supply for wearable devices.

The pursuit of high-performance flexible thermoelectric generators (FTEGs) for wearable electronics is facing a great challenge, and thermoelectric semiconductors should show both high thermoelectric efficiency and robust mechanical flexibility. Recently, ductile inorganic thermoelectric materials have shown promising plasticity, which provides good processability and moderate thermoelectric properties in both n- and p-type solid solutions. In this work, we first improved the thermoelectric performance of n-type Ag2Te0.2S0.8 by alloying Se at the S site, resulting in a high zT value of 0.62 at room temperature for the Ag2Te0.2S0.1Se0.7 sample. The transition from the cubic phase to the monoclinic phase when alloying Se at the S site should be responsible for the improved thermoelectric performance and the well-maintained plasticity, which has been proven by the calculated lattice spacing. Then, the thermoelectric properties of p-type AgCuX (X = S, Se, Te) solid solutions were also improved by alloying S at the Se site and introducing tiny vacancies, showing a high zT value of 0.42 at room temperature for the (AgCu)0.996Se0.18S0.08Te0.74 sample. Finally, based on the warm rolling forming thick films with the optimized n- and p-type compositions, we fabricated an 18-couple FTEG with an exceptional thickness of 0.7 mm. The open circuit voltage and output power of the flexible device reached 2.32 mV and 8.81 μW at ΔT = 32.1 K, showing a high normalized power density. Crucially, due to the robust mechanical flexibility of these ductile thermoelectric materials and the flexible polyimide substrates, the variation of the internal resistance for the flexible device is within 1% after 1000 bending cycles. This work provides an effective strategy of simultaneously improving the thermoelectric performance and mechanical flexibility by tuning the crystal structures and also shows the possible applications of ductile inorganic semiconductors for wearable electronics.

In this work, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) coated silver telluride (PC Ag 2 Te) nanorods were prepared by a wet-chemical method using the PEDOT:PSS coated tellurium (PC Te) nanorods as the templates. Flexible PC Ag 2 Te nanocomposite film on polyethersulfone (PES) substrate was prepared through vacuum filtration followed by mechanical pressing process. An optimal PC Ag 2 Te nanocomposite film showed a maximum power factor of 143.3 μW/mK 2 at room temperature and 221.7 μW/mK 2 at 373 K. The electrical conductivity of the PC Ag 2 Te composite film decreased by ∼ 3.3% after bending for 1000 times around a rod with a radius of 5 mm. An eight-leg thermoelectric generator assembled with the optimal PC Ag 2 Te nanocomposite film generated a maximum output power and output density of 209.4 nW and 141.5 μW/cm 2 at a temperature gradient of 30.3 K. This work provides a facile method to prepare thermoelectric materials for flexible thermoelectric generators.
