Synthesis and application of polyurethane-modified silicone softener for enhanced fabric softness and elasticity

Haiwen Mao,Yan Gao,Weikun Chen,Yan Hong,Yufa Sun

Although silicone softeners are widely used in textile processing and finishing, elasticity and wash durability improvements remain necessary. In this study, a new bifunctional hydroxysilane coupling agent (KHP) was designed and synthesized. KHP was used as a chain extender incorporated into the polyurethane segments, then reacted with linear hydroxyl silicone oil (PMX500) through a condensation reaction, resulting in a polyurethane-grafted silicone finishing agent (KHP-PU). The KHP-PU was applied to polyamide fabric using a pad-dry-cure process, and the treated fabric was systematically evaluated for surface characteristics and hand-feel properties. Results demonstrated that KHP-PU significantly enhanced the fabric's softness and elasticity while improving its mechanical and antistatic properties. Moreover, adjusting the amount of KHP in KHP-PU effectively regulates the distribution of polysiloxane segments on the fiber surface, optimizing the fabric's handle. This study provides innovative insights for designing and developing new multifunctional softeners to create advanced textile materials with enhanced consumer appeal.

Quantitative softness and texture bimodal haptic sensors for robotic clinical feature identification and intelligent picking

Ye Qiu,Fangnan Wang,Zhuang Zhang,Kuanqiang Shi,Yi Song,Jiutian Lu,Minjia Xu,Mengyuan Qian,Wenan Zhang,Jixuan Wu,Zheng Zhang,Hao Chai,Aiping Liu,Hanqing Jiang,Huaping Wu

Replicating human somatosensory networks in robots is crucial for dexterous manipulation, ensuring the appropriate grasping force for objects of varying softness and textures. Despite advances in artificial haptic sensing for object recognition, accurately quantifying haptic perceptions to discern softness and texture remains challenging. Here, we report a methodology that uses a bimodal haptic sensor to capture multidimensional static and dynamic stimuli, allowing for the simultaneous quantification of softness and texture features. This method demonstrates synergistic measurements of elastic and frictional coefficients, thereby providing a universal strategy for acquiring the adaptive gripping force necessary for scarless, antislippage interaction with delicate objects. Equipped with this sensor, a robotic manipulator identifies porcine mucosal features with 98.44% accuracy and stably grasps visually indistinguishable mature white strawberries, enabling reliable tissue palpation and intelligent picking. The design concept and comprehensive guidelines presented would provide insights into haptic sensor development, promising benefits for robotics.

Self-Adaptive Perception of Object's Deformability with Multiple Deformation Attributes Utilizing Biomimetic Mechanoreceptors

Waner Lin,Ziya Wang,Yingtian Xu,Zhixian Hu,Wenyu Zhao,Zhihao Zhu,Zhenglong Sun,Guoxing Wang,Zhengchun Peng

The perception of object's deformability in unstructured interactions relies on both kinesthetic and cutaneous cues to adapt the uncertainties of an object. However, the existing tactile sensors cannot provide adequate cutaneous cues to self-adaptively estimate the material softness, especially in non-standard contact scenarios where the interacting object deviates from the assumption of an elastic half-infinite body. This paper proposes an innovative design of a tactile sensor that integrates the capabilities of two slow-adapting mechanoreceptors within a soft medium, allowing self-decoupled sensing of local pressure and strain at specific locations within the contact interface. By leveraging these localized cutaneous cues, the sensor can accurately and self-adaptively measure the material softness of an object, accommodating variations in thicknesses and applied forces. Furthermore, when combined with a kinesthetic cue from the robot, the sensor can enhance tactile expression by the synergy of two relevant deformation attributes, including material softness and compliance. It is demonstrated that the biomimetic fusion of tactile information can fully comprehend the deformability of an object, hence facilitating robotic decision-making and dexterous manipulation.

3D printing of self-healing personalized liver models for surgical training and preoperative planning

Lu Yahui,Chen Xing,Han Fang,Zhao Qian,Xie Tao,Wu Jingjun,Zhang Yuhua

3D printing can produce intuitive, precise, and personalized anatomical models, providing invaluable support for precision medicine, particularly in areas like surgical training and preoperative planning. However, conventional 3D printed models are often significantly more rigid than human organs and cannot undergo repetitive resection, which severely restricts their clinical value. Here we report the stereolithographic 3D printing of personalized liver models based on physically crosslinked self-healing elastomers with liver-like softness. Benefiting from the short printing time, the highly individualized models can be fabricated immediately following enhanced CT examination. Leveraging the high-efficiency self-healing performance, these models support repetitive resection for optimal trace through a trial-and-error approach. At the preliminary explorative clinical trial (NCT06006338), a total of 5 participants are included for preoperative planning. The primary outcomes indicate that the negative surgery margins are achieved and the unforeseen injuries of vital vascular structures are avoided. The 3D printing of liver models can enhance the safety of hepatic surgery, demonstrating promising application value in clinical practice.

Polydopamine modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) for efficient cellulase immobilization towards advanced bamboo fiber flexibility and tissue softness

Tong Qin,Liqin Liu,Haibing Cao,Bin Lu,Shuangxi Nie,Zhengbai Cheng,Xiaohong Zhang,Hongbin Liu,Xingye An

Herein, a green facile approach to improve the flexibility of unbleached bamboo kraft pulp (UBKP) via an immobilized enzyme technology is proposed. Polydopamine (PDA) acts as versatile modification and coating materials of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) for assembling versatile bio-carriers (PDA@CNC). Cellulase biomacromolecules are efficiently immobilized on PDA@CNC to form cellulase@PDA@CNC nanocomposites. The relative enzyme activity , temperature/pH tolerance, and storage stability of cellulase were significantly improved after immobilization. The degree of polymerization treated UBKP decreased by 5.42 % (25 U/g pulp) compared to the control sample. The flexibility of treated fibers was 6.61 × 10 14 /(N·m 2 ), which was 96.93 % higher (25 U/g) compared to the control and 3.88 times higher than that of the blank fibers. Cellulase@PDA@CNC performs excellent accessibility to fiber structure and induces high degree of fibrillation and hydrolysis of UBKP fibers, which contributes high softness of obtained tissue handsheets. The bio-carrier PDA@CNC within paper framework may further enhance tissue tensile strength . This study proposes a practical and environmentally friendly immobilization approach of cellulase@PDA@CNC for improving the hydrolysis efficiency and flexibility of UBKP fibers, which provides the possibility to maintain the strength of tissue paper while improving its softness, thus broadening the high-value application of immobilized enzyme technology in tissue production.

Smart control of cotton fabric comfort by cross-linking thermo-responsive poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxyethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol methacrylate)

Yangyi Chen,Jie An,Qi Zhong,Peter Müller-Buschbaum,Jiping Wang

The smart control of cotton fabric comfort by cross-linking thermo-responsive random copolymer is investigated. The monomers 2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxyethyl methacrylate (MEO2MA) and ethylene glycol methacrylate (EGMA) with a molar ratio of 17:3 are selected to synthesize the thermo-responsive random copolymer poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxyethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol methacrylate), abbreviated as P(MEO2MA-co-EGMA). By using citric acid as a cross-linking agent, the obtained P(MEO2MA-co-EGMA) is successfully immobilized onto cotton fabrics. Smart control is achieved from the thermo-responsive behavior of the copolymer. Cross-linked P(MEO2MA-co-EGMA) will collapse when the ambient temperature exceeds its transition temperature. Therefore, the formerly compact P(MEO2MA-co-EGMA) layer will switch to a porous structure, and the air/moisture permeability of the textiles is enhanced. As the comfort of the textiles is closely related to the air/moisture permeability, a smart control of the cotton fabric comfort can be realized. In addition, the softness of cotton fabrics with and without thermo-responsive polymers does not show a prominent change, even when the applied solution concentration is as high as 16% (wt%). On the contrary, the stiffness of the cotton fabric coated with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) is significantly higher than the original cotton fabric, indicating that homo PNIPAM is less suitable for textiles used in daily lives. Moreover, the whiteness and mechanical properties are studied and stay unchanged after cross-linking. As a consequence, the introduction of P(MEO2MA-co-EGMA) into textiles can provide textiles with smart control of cotton comfort, and it will not influence the wearabilities of the textiles.

Gummy-inspired natural eutectogels with high adhesiveness, toughness and humidity response

Zhiyang Li,Zhaolin Ge,Qize Chen,Yifei He,Jin Wu,Zhuang Xie

Biogel-based ionic devices have emerged as versatile platforms for broad applications in wearable electronics, healthcare monitoring and bioelectronic interfaces. Electronic functions derived from fully edible natural soft materials are particularly attractive to allow low cost, green, biocompatible and biodegradable devices in biomedical areas as well as smart food package. This work presents a gummy-inspired protein eutectogel by simply soaking gelatin hydrogels into solutions of natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) consisting of sorbitol and citric acid to allow solvent exchange. Compared with the gelatin hydrogel, this natural eutectogel (NEG) exhibited anti-drying and anti-freezing performance, remarkably improved adhesiveness, room temperature degradability, as well as high mechanical toughness. The soaking conditions were investigated to tune the softness and ionic conductivity of the NEG, which revealed that the water content and acid ratio could significantly impact on the gel properties. Additionally, the eutectogel thin film exhibited good humidity sensing capability with a wide linear detection range (22%–98% RH), in which a soft patch was further demonstrated for breath test to detect various respiration frequencies. Thus, we believe the concept of NEG combining biopolymers and NADES can be explored in a broad range of soft devices for sensing, bio-adhesives, energy supply or drug delivery. Graphical
