The multifunctional composite elastomers serve as thermal interface materials for heat dissipation in electronic devices when their thermal transport performance is enhanced. The common method for enhancement, continuously raising the thermal conductive filler loading only can improve thermal conductivity of composite elastomers but reduces compliance, resulting in elevated contact thermal resistance with solid surfaces, compromising thermal transport. To address this, we propose grafting short dangling chains onto the composite elastomer matrix to further promote compliance under a certain filler loading. Characterization results demonstrate that the grafted chains effectively reduce relaxation time, enabling faster deformation for the material under pressure. This approach enhances interfacial compatibility, widening the thermal transport path at contact interfaces to contact thermal resistance by 94% (from 17.8 to 1.07 mm 2 W/K), significantly improving overall thermal transport. Additionally, we discussed the feasibility of employing composite elastomers as thermal interface materials for efficient chip heat dissipation. Highlight The grafted dangling chains can promote the composite elastomers softness. The softness promotion can help reduce thermal contact resistance. A series of theories are employed to learn the mechanisms of the promotion. The resulting composite elastomers can be used as thermal interface materials.

Compliance and low strain hysteresis are of great importance for wearable devices and electronic skins, but it is still a challenge to obtain materials with high compliance, low strain hysteresis and sensing ability for electronic skins. In this work, we have achieved highly compliant and low strain hysteresis sensory electronic skins (SESs) utilizing solution processable hybrid hydrogels. The hybrid hydrogels are constructed by incorporating polyaniline (PANI) into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). By regulating the contents of PVA and PANI, the elastic modulus of the PVA/PANI hybrid hydrogels can be tuned in the range of 15.7–154.4 kPa, which covers the elastic modulus of human soft tissue (≈30 kPa). The PVA/PANI hybrid hydrogels also achieve low strain hysteresis and exhibit outstanding recovery during the cyclic loading–unloading process. In such hydrogels, PANI works as the conductive component and contributes to the conductivity of the hybrid hydrogels (13.3 S m−1). Further investigations reveal that the compliant SESs possess high sensitivity (GF = 4.28), outstanding stability (>1000 cycles) and low response time (250 ms). Because of the fully physically cross-linked structure, the hydrogels in SESs are completely solution processable and can be regenerated. By introducing glycerol into the hybrid hydrogels, the flexibility of SESs can be kept at least for one week and the sensing ability is also well maintained. Finally, we demonstrate that SESs exhibit reliable sensing ability in monitoring representative human movements, such as joint bending and swallowing.

This work focuses on the relationship between flexibility of molecular chains and thermal properties of polyurethane elastomer (PUE), which laid the foundation of further research about how to improve thermal properties of PUE. A series of PUE samples with different flexibility of molecular chains was prepared by using 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO)/bisphenol-a (BPA) blends with different mole ratios including 9/1, 8/2, 7/3, 6/4 and 5/5. As comparison, PUE extended with pure 1,4-BDO and BPA was also synthesized. These samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), etc. The results showed that with the decrease in flexibility of molecular chains the glass transition temperature (T g ) increased and low-temperature properties became worse. Besides, all samples had a certain degree of microphase separation, and soft segments in some samples were crystallized, i.e. the decreasing flexibility of molecular chains led to the impossibility of chains tightly packing and crystalline domains forming so that the degree of microphase separation decreased and the thermal properties became worse.

Overcoming the persistent trade-off among thermal conductivity, mechanical compliance, and dynamic stability in elastic thermal interface materials (TIMs) remains a critical challenge. Conventional random-filler approaches suffer from inefficient heat conduction, while pre-formed thermal networks lack conformability adapt to dynamic interfaces a biomimetic solution involving dandelion-inspired is presented, radially oriented graphene microspheres encapsulating gallium-indium liquid metal nanoparticles (LMGS). This multi-tiered design, which incorporates both the radial microscale structural architecture of the microspheres and their macroscopic stacking configuration, engenders microscale thermal conduction units that autonomously organize into a highly efficient 3D thermal network (11.1 W m −1 K −1 per vol%). Crucially, the graphene skeleton supports and confines the liquid metal, suppressing coalescence and leakage under stress. This innovative approach effectively addresses the challenges associated with filler dispersion and network infiltration. The radial architecture facilitates isotropic heat dissipation, while the inherent compliance of the microspheres combines with the polymer matrix to achieve a low compressive modulus and 94.7% rebound (40% compressing strain at 100 cycles). Consequently, LMGS-based TIMs maintain vibration-resistant conformal contact and excellent thermal stability under dynamic mechanical stresses. This bioinspired architectural paradigm decouples thermal and mechanical properties, offering a promising pathway for advanced thermal management in next-generation flexible electronics and aerospace systems.

An intrinsically stretchable conductor with a natural deformability is a fundamental building component for stretchable and wearable electronics. The large variations of conductance upon mechanical deformations often lead to electronic instability at the system level. Here, an elastomeric nanocomposite mesh conductor is introduced, which exhibits a series of desirable properties including strain-invariant conductance, mechanical compliance, and excellent breathability. Selective laser ablation enables the facile procedure to create the mesh from a silver nanowire/thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposite. The hollow mesh design effectively accommodates the strains to achieve stable conductance during tensile deformations. Demonstrations of wearable heaters and electromyogram sensors show the practical suitability of the nanocomposite mesh conductor for uses in epidermal electronic devices. The structural design and engineering strategy reported in this study represent a generic approach for the deterministic and versatile manipulation of intrinsically stretchable conductors.
