The application of pervaporation technology in the recovery of aromatic compounds from water faces the challenge of low performance. In this paper, a uniform zeolitic imidazolate framework/polydimethyl-siloxane (ZIF-8/PDMS) composite membrane was fabricated by means of contra-diffusion crystallization and a casting method in sequence. The diffusion time was optimized to be 24 h. ZIF-8/PDMS showed improving performance to pure PDMS . The permeation flux of linalool, neral, and geranial in ZIF-8/PDMS increased by 73.3%, 110.9%, and 106.0%, respectively; and the separation factors were also improved. The separation effect of neral (cis-citral) was much better than that of geranial (trans-citral), suggesting the potential enantioselectivity. In ternary model system, the separation of citral (neral and geranial) was competitively restrained by the presence of linalool. ZIF-8/PDMS also showed good performance in real lemon oil. After treatment for 9 h, the recovery rates of linalool, neral and geranial were 97.20%, 96.15%, and 92.56%, respectively.
Topical application of trans -resveratrol was limited due to its insolubility and instability problems. In this work, three kinds of essential oil based microemulsions containing rose oil (RO-ME), jasmine oil (JO-ME) and lemon oil (LO-ME) were prepared, constituted of Cremophor EL/1,2-propanediol/essential oils (47: 23: 30, w/w). All the three microemulsions could significantly improve the solubility and photostability of trans -resveratrol. Moreover, they could sustain the release of trans -resveratrol. Antioxidant activity study demonstrated that trans -resveratrol loaded microemulsions exhibited higher scavenging activities than both trans -resveratrol and blank microemulsions. The cell experiments demonstrated that RO-ME and JO-ME had lower cytotoxicity on HaCaT cells than LO-ME. The trans -resveratrol loaded RO-ME and JO-ME could significantly protect the cells from UVB damage. Finally, the in vitro skin permeation study exhibited that the microemulsions could enhance the skin permeation of trans -resveratrol in comparison to the aqueous solution. In summary, the essential oil based microemulsions could improve the solubility, photostability, antioxidant activity and UVB photoprotection of trans -resveratrol, which will be beneficial to its topical application.

Algal oil is an aquatic plant source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which may exhibit health benefits when consumed in sufficiently high quantities. But its application as a healthy lipid in functional foods is often limited by its tendency to rapidly oxidize and produce rancid off-flavors. In this study, algal oil-in-water emulsions were prepared using pea protein isolate (PPI)-inulin conjugates as emulsifiers. These conjugates were prepared via the Maillard reaction using a combination of ultrasound and pH-shift treatments. The algal oil phase was mixed with lemon oil (0 to 1.2 wt%) prior to homogenization to improve its sensory characteristics. The addition of 0.6 wt% of lemon oil did not significantly affect the formation and physical stability of the emulsions but it did mask the unpleasant odor of algae oil. The conjugate-stabilized emulsions exhibited shear thinning behavior and had a higher viscosity than PPI-stabilized emulsions. They also had a higher surface load and formed thicker interfacial layers. The conjugates, especially the conjugates prepared by the combined treatments, also significantly improved the physical and oxidative stability of the emulsions. These effects were attributed to an increase in the steric repulsion between the oil droplets due to the hydrophilic inulin chains, as well as to an increase in the antioxidant activity of the interfacial layers due to the presence of more antioxidant proteins. Overall, our results show that the quality attributes and shelf life of DHA-fortified algae oil emulsions can be significantly improved using a plant-based protein-inulin conjugate.
