Citronella-based polyesters by organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization and their recyclable crosslinked films

Kai-Xuan Qin,Shi-Si Li,Jing Xu,Zi-Long Li,Zi-Chen Li,Chunzu Cheng

Independence of food supply chain is a grand challenge encountered by the development of bio-based polymers. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of amorphous aliphatic polyesters via organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization of 9-membered lactone monomer, a novel downstream product of non-edible citronella oil. In particular, chemical transformation of trisubstituted alkene moiety owned by this renewable biomass was achieved by cross-metathesis of this bulky group with methyl acrylate . Three-armed star polymers were converted to free-standing films by UV-induced crosslinking. In particular, these crosslinked thin films could be efficiently recycled as ω -hydroxy ester upon methanolysis. This work opens a new avenue for the synthesis and application of terpene- and terpenoid-based polymers.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) oil: A promising miticidal and ovicidal agent against Sarcoptes scabiei

Meilin Li,Buming Liu,Charlotte Bernigaud,Katja Fischer,Jacques Guillot,Fang Fang

Background Essential oils may represent an alternative strategy for controlling scabies, a neglected tropical disease caused by the infestation of mite from the species Sarcoptes scabiei . Lemongrass ( Cymbopogen citratus ) oil is reported to possess pharmacological properties including antiparasitc, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. The aim of the present study was to assess the potential efficacy of lemongrass oil against the mites and eggs of Sarcoptes scabiei . Methodology/Principal findings Mass spectrometry analysis confirmed that the main component presented in lemongrass oil was citral. Lemongrass oil at concentrations of 10% and 5% killed all Sarcoptes mites within 10 and 25 min, respectively. The median lethal concentration value was 1.37%, 1.08%, 0.91%, 0.64%, and 0.48% at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h, respectively. Lemongrass oil at all concentrations (10%, 5%, 1%, 0.5%, 0.1%) was able to significantly decrease the hatching rate of Sarcoptes eggs. Conclusions/Significance Lemongrass oil should be considered as a promising miticidal and ovicidal agent for scabies control. Scabies is a parasitic infestation which affects about 455 million people annually, with a particularly high prevalence in low income tropical regions. The disease is frequently complicated by bacterial infections. Currently available treatments do not meet the ideal profile which includes miticides, ovicidal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory/antipruritic properties. Cymbopogon citratus is a plant widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The essential oil from C . citratus is known as lemongrass oil with reported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. We conducted experiments to assess the miticidal and ovicidal efficacy of lemongrass oil against Sarcoptes mites collected from naturally infected rabbits in China. The results demonstrated that lemongrass oil can kill the motile stages of Sarcoptes mites effectively and presented a significant ovicidal activity. Considering all these properties, lemongrass oil should be considered a promissing miticide against scabies.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil: an eco-friendly and fast-acting acaricide against the grain pest mite Aleuroglyphus ovatus

Qiao Teng,Minghui Zou,Qiqi Xue,Qiqi Zhang,Ting Liu,Junjie Guo,Yuanyuan Li,Jinhong Zhao

This study was designed to evaluate the acaricidal effect and the mode of action of lemongrass essential oil (LEO) against Aleuroglyphus ovatus. Contact and fumigant mortality indicated that LEO had higher acaricidal activities at a low concentration, and the acaricidal action of LEO was significantly more effective by contact effects than by fumigant bioassay. Repellent rate against A. ovatus at different concentrations of LEO increased with application time. Observation on the toxic symptoms revealed that almost all mites were in immobilized type (IM type) in 30 min, but the symptom of knock-down type (KD type) appeared later. Cuticles of mites killed by LEO exhibited obvious colour change and deformation. Detoxification enzyme activity assay showed that glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity increased in mites treated by LEO compared to the controls. LEO increased catalase (CAT) activity of A. ovatus but inhibited superoxide dismutase (SOD) after 20 h. LEO also increased nitric oxide synthetase (NOS) and inhibited acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activities. Moreover, LEO acted as a fast-acting neurotoxin on A. ovatus. Our results suggest that LEO has an acaricidal potential and is a promising agent in control of A. ovatus.

Chemical Compositions of Ligusticum chuanxiong Oil and Lemongrass Oil and Their Joint Action against Aphis citricola Van Der Goot (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Chao Zhang,Runqiang Liu,Jun He,Zhiqing Ma,Xing Zhang

In order to develop novel botanical insecticides, the joint action ofLigusticum chuanxiongoil (LCO) and lemongrass oil (LO) againstAphis citricolavan der Goot was determined systematically indoors and outdoors. The chemical profiles of LCO and LO as determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that the main compounds from LCO were (Z)-ligustilide (44.58%) and senkyunolide A (26.92%), and that of LO were geranial (42.16%) and neral (32.58%), respectively. The mixture of LCO and LO showed significant synergy againstA. citricola, with a common-toxicity coefficient (CTC) value of 221.46 at the optimal ratio of LCO to LO (4:1,w:w). Based on the results of solvents and emulsifiers screening,L. chuanxiongoil·Lemongrass oil 20% emulsifiable concentrate (20% LCO·LO EC) was developed, and its stability was confirmed with tests of cold and thermal storage. Field trials indicated that the insecticidal activity of the diluted 20% LCO·LO EC (1000 fold dilution) was comparable to conventional pesticide (20% imidacloprid EC) onA. citricolaseven days after application. Thus, the mixture of LCO and LO has the potential to be further developed as a botanical pesticide. Keywords:lemongrass oil;Ligusticum chuanxiongoil;Aphis citricolavan der Goot;botanical aphicides

Attraction behaviour of Anagrus nilaparvatae to remote lemongrass (Cymbopogon distans) oil and its volatile compounds

Guo-Feng Mao,Xiao-Chang Mo,Hatem Fouad,Ghulam Abbas,Jian-Chu Mo

Utilisation of Anagrus nilaparvatae is a promising and effective method for planthoppers manipulation. Twenty-seven components of remote lemongrass (Cymbopogon distans) oil were identified by GC/MS and nine volatiles were selected for behavioural experiments. In this study, we noted that the remote lemongrass oil was attractive to female A. nilaparvatae at concentrations of 0.1 and 1 mg/L. α-Pinene, β-pinene, eucalyptol, carveol and D-carvone attracted female wasps in the dose-dependent bioassays. Blend 1 (a mixture of eucalyptol, D-carvone, carveol, α-pinene, and β-pinene with ratios of remote lemongrass oil volatiles of 625:80:11:5:3) attracted female wasps at 10 mg/L, while blend 2 (a mixture of the same five volatiles at the same loading ratio) attracted them at 0.1 and 1 mg/L. These results suggested that plant essential oils could be attractants for natural enemies to control pests. The ratios of volatiles in the mixtures affect the attractiveness of the synthetic mixtures.

Ultrasonic-assisted encapsulation of lemongrass essential oil in HP-β-CD: Optimization, characterization, and application for mango preservation

Yuexin Pan,Wenhao Zhang,Wanzhou Yang,Zhiyuan Tai,Xia Liu,Jia Ran,Xiaodong Yu,Qiyi He

Mangoes are highly susceptible to post-harvest spoilage, leading to significant losses. This study aimed to optimize the encapsulation of lemongrass essential oil (LEO) using ultrasonic-assisted hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and response surface methodology (RSM). The ultrasonic-assisted inclusion complex (UIC) was characterized through various techniques including particle size analysis, SEM, UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, and TGA. The antibacterial activity of the UIC was evaluated, and its effectiveness in prolonging mango shelf life was assessed by monitoring parameters such as weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamin C (VC) content, and external appearance. The results indicated that ultrasonic-assisted encapsulation significantly improved the encapsulation efficiency (EE), with optimal conditions of a core-wall ratio of 9:1, ultrasonic power of 150 W, and temperature of 36 °C. The UIC exhibited sustained release of LEO and enhanced antimicrobial activity, resulting in significant reductions in weight loss, firmness degradation, and metabolic changes during mango storage. Treated mangoes also showed improved appearance, with delayed onset of black spots and browning. These findings suggest that ultrasonic-assisted HP-β-CD encapsulation of LEO is an effective, eco-friendly strategy for postharvest preservation of mangoes, offering substantial potential for extending shelf life and maintaining fruit quality.

Proteomic analysis suggests that monoterpenes in lemongrass disrupt Ca2+ homeostasis in Haemaphysalis longicornis leading to mitochondrial depolarization and cytotoxicity

Desmond O. Agwunobi,Mengxue Li,Ningmei Wang,Guomin Chang,Xiaojing Zhang,Xiaomin Xue,Zhijun Yu,Hui Wang,Jingze Liu

Complex mixtures of bioactive ingredients in plant essential oils present complex chemistries which involve different modes of action. An increasing body of scientific reports has recently focused on the acaricidal activities of plant essential oils attributed to their monoterpene components, but information about their underlying molecular mechanism of action is scarce. Here, after the chemical analysis of lemongrass oil, a proteomic analysis of the ovary, salivary gland, and midgut of Haemaphysalis longicornis exposed to Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) essential oil was performed via data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry (DIA-MS) technology to further elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved. Pathway analysis reveals the activation of metabolic pathways mediated by oxidoreductases and transferases. Furthermore, the upregulation of various calcium-associated proteins and the upregulation of cytochrome c1, cytochrome c oxidase polypeptide IV, and programmed cell death protein 6-like isoform X1 suggest a cytotoxic mode of action via the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial Ca 2+ overload, mitochondrial uncoupling, and depolarization, and ATP depletion leading to either apoptotic or necrotic death. Morphological alterations observed after the RNAi of a major detoxification enzyme (glutathione S-transferase) merit further investigation. Hence, the cytotoxic mode of action exhibited by C. citratus oil could be vital for the development of eco-friendly acaricide.
