Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SiOC on a cordierite monolith inner wall and its properties for soot combustion

Jia Ma,Yunlong Ning,Cairong Gong,Gang Xue,Guoliang Fan

Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SiOC was successfully fabricated on a cordierite monolith inner wall of a polystyrene (PS) sphere template through a colloidal crystal templating (CCT) method (named as 3DOM SiOC/cordierite). And perovskite-type LaCoO3 (LCO) mixed metal oxides, prepared by a facile sol–gel process, were coated onto the wall of the 3DOM SiOC/cordierite by a simple impregnation-sintering approach (named as LCO/3DOM SiOC/cordierite). The morphological and physicochemical properties studies indicate that the 3DOM structure has excellent connectivity, a large specific surface area, and applicable pore size. And the 3DOM structure plays an important role in preventing aggregation of the targeted catalyst particles, improving the contact condition between catalysts and soot as well as enhancing the reducibility of the LCO. The subsequent investigation on the catalytic performance of the 3DOM samples for diesel soot combustion shows that the 3DOM texture offers the catalyst a lower soot combustion temperature than a conventional catalyst, and the LCO/3DOM SiOC/cordierite reduces the combustion temperature even further while avoiding the rise of back-pressure effectively as well.

Synthesis, characterization and tribological performances of nano-CeO2/biodiesel carbon soot composites as a novel lubricant additive in polyalphaolefin

Chuan Li,Xinxin Wang,Qiangqiang Zhang,Xu Tan,Yefeng Liu,Honglin Li,Hao Liu,Enzhu Hu,Xianguo Hu

This study fabricated nano-CeO 2 /biodiesel carbon soot (BCS) composites using the raw material BCS, which is the byproduct of biodiesel combustion and cerium salt and used as a novel lubricant additive to PAO6 for steel/steel contact. Oleylamine modified nano-CeO 2 /BCS composites comprise abundant lipophilic groups, and thus nano-CeO 2 /BCS composites exhibit good dispersion in PAO6. The tribological results showed that nano-CeO 2 /BCS composites significantly improved the lubricating performances of PAO6. In case of 0.1 wt% nano-CeO 2 /BCS composites dispersed in PAO6, the friction coefficient and wear volume were reduced by 17.3 and 35.2%, respectively. The improved tribological properties were attributed to the composites rolling and forming of a lubricating film on the friction surface and the presence of BCS and CeO 2 in composites exerting a synergistic lubricating effect, which simultaneously improved the tribological properties of PAO6. This discovery contributes to the conversion of BCS into valuables and promotes the high value utilization of BCS as a lubricating additive.

Template-Free Synthesis of Macroporous SiO2 Catalyst Supports for Diesel Soot Combustion

Hui Wang,Zewen Chen,Xingyu Deng,Shengji Wu,Qinqin Yu,Wei Yang,Jie Zhou

Catalytic combustion is considered as one of the most efficient methods for soot removal. However, the limited contact area between soot and active site is a key restrictive factor for the present reaction, as soot particles (particle size > 25 nm) are usually difficult to enter the inner pores of general catalysts. In this work, we report a simple and economic strategy to synthesize macroporous SiO2 as the support for combustion catalysts so as to facilitate the mass transfer in the inner surface of the catalysts. The macroporous SiO2 could be synthesized rationally through controlling and adjusting the Si–OH dehydration condensation and neck growth during the sol–gel preparation process. The porosity of SiO2 influences catalytic activity greatly in the reaction of soot catalytic combustion. Furthermore, macroporous SiO2 supported Ag and K catalysts exhibit superior soot oxidation activity, showing important potentiality for future applications.

Sintering behavior of platinum and modification effect of ceria on silica-alumina supports for diesel soot oxidation

Shuran Liu,Taojin Wang,Xiaodong Wu,Yue Ma,Rui Ran,Duan Weng,Shuang Liu

In this work, silica-alumina mixed oxides with different SiO 2 contents (5% and 30%) were adopted as acidic supports for platinum catalysts for soot oxidation. The obtained catalysts were thermally aged in air at 550, 650 and 750 °C for 2 h, respectively. The catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO chemisorption, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), N 2 adsorption/desorption, NH 3 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), infrared (IR) spectroscopy of CO and NH 3 adsorption, and NO temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO). The acidic support Pt catalysts had higher catalytic activities for NO oxidation and soot oxidation. After aging at 750 ℃, severer sintering of Pt occurred on the acidic supports, and some Pt particles larger than 50 nm formed, resulting in serious deactivation. It was ascribed to metallic state of Pt on the acidic supports with weakened metal-support interactions (SMI). Thus, CeO 2 was added to the silica-alumina support by ball milling to strengthen the SMI via forming Pt-O-Ce bonds. In this way, Pt nanoparticles were anchored to the modified support to inhibit sintering at high temperatures, and the obtained Pt/CeO 2 /SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited both high soot oxidation activity and superior thermal stability.
