As a promising alternative fuel with favorable properties and attractive prospects, the application of n-hexanol in diesel engines has aroused the interest of researchers. This study investigated the effects of mixing with n-hexanol on the morphology, nanostructure, graphitization, and oxidation reactivity of soot particles generated from a diesel engine. Experiments were performed on a turbocharged, four-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine fueled with D100 (neat diesel fuel), DH15 (15% n-hexanol and 85% diesel, v/v), and DH30 (30% n-hexanol and 70% diesel, v/v), respectively. Under the constant torque of 125 N·m, two typical speeds of 1370 and 2150 rpm were selected. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize particulate samples. TEM images showed that DH15 and DH30 particles had smaller primary particle diameters in comparison with neat diesel particles. Moreover, with the increase of the n-hexanol content in mixtures, the interlayer distance increased, indicating a more disordered nanostructure. RS results showed that soot samples generated from n-hexanol/diesel blended fuels had a lower degree of graphitization with larger ID1/IG and AD1/AG and more amorphous carbon with larger ID3/IG and AD3/AG. Based on TGA, it can be deduced that the DH30 soot sample obtained at the engine speed of 1370 rpm was easier to be oxidized in the DPF regeneration process for an 8.23% reduction in Tmax compared with D100 soot. Furthermore, activation energy of soots sampled at the engine speed of 2150 rpm decreased from 123.0 kJ/mol for D100 soot, to 109.6 kJ/mol for DH15 soot, and to 101.2 kJ/mol for DH30 soot, respectively. Regarding the effect of engine speeds on physicochemical characteristics of particles, results showed that the soot has higher oxidation activity under higher engine speed.

Nonthermal plasma (NTP) enhanced catalytic oxidation of diesel particulate matter (DPM) is promising for applications. The synergistic effects of transition metal oxides (MO x , M = Mn, Cu, Ce, Fe, Co, Ti) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma on DPM oxidation were investigated, and Fe 2 O 3 showed the best synergistic effect. Cobalt-doped iron oxide (Co–FeO x ) displaying a spinel structure showed the best performance among M –FeO x ( M = Co, Ce, Cu, Zn, Mn). The main intermediate product generated during the catalytic oxidation of DPM is monodentate carbonate. Under DBD plasma, a strong oxidizing intermediate ferrate (FeO 4 2− ) mainly produced at 100–200°C can promote the low-temperature oxidation of DPM.

Diesel particulate filter is used to reduce particulate matter (PM) emission due to the stringent emission standards. The accumulated PM has been oxidized by the periodical regeneration method to avoid pressure buildup. The innovation of this study is to explore the oxidation performance of Printex-U (PU), which is mixed with ash and soluble organic fractions, under different operating conditions. Different aspects of operating parameters, such as the oxygen ratio in an O2/N2 atmosphere, total flow rate, initial PU mass, and heating rate, on PU oxidation properties have been critically discussed using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The oxygen ratio in the O2/N2 atmosphere is positively correlated with the oxidation characteristics of PU. The comprehensive oxidation index (S ) of PU under the 20% O2/80% N2 atmosphere increases by 184% compared with the 10% O2/90% N2 atmosphere. When the initial PU mass is 3 mg, the combustion stability coefficient (Rw) and S reach the best values, which are 55.53 × 105 and 2.03 × 107 %2min–2 ° C–3, respectively. With the increase in the heating rate, the oxidation properties of PU become sensible and deflagration occurs easily, so that 10 °C/min heating rate is the best option. This study provides a theoretical basis for the optimization design of diesel particulates during the regeneration process.

In this paper, potassium titanate whiskers was prepared via the Molten salt synthesis on the surface of cordierite ceramics for the regeneration of diesel particulate filters (DPFs). SEM, EDS , XRD , FT-IR, TG-DSC and TPO were carried out to characterize the morphology, microstructure, growth mechanism and catalytic performance of the samples. Potassium titanate whiskers with diameter (100–500 nm) and length (about 3 μm) is tightly combined with the cordierite ceramic substrate . The catalyst performance investigation demonstrates that potassium titanate whiskers decrease the soot combustion temperature apparently. The soot combustion process was studied by thermal analysis tests, and the activation energy of the combustion reaction can be calculated using Freeman-Carroll method. The carbon oxidation activation energy is 14.009 kcal/mol, and the activation energy for the catalytic reaction with potassium titanate whiskers is 6.287 kcal/mol, it can be illustrated that potassium titanate whiskers/cordierite catalyst possess excellence performance for carbon catalytic combustion. The coarseness of the interface increased because potassium titanate whiskers grew on the cordierite substrate, and the trapping ability could improve. This unique microstructure has potential application in the DPF field.

To address short-term emission of massive particulate matter (PM) from diesel engines, rapid regeneration of catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPF) based on soot combustion is a considerable challenge. Herein, we employed an aluminosilicate fiber-weaved ceramic paper (CP) as a filter matrix, on which highly active potassium-supported antimony-doped tin oxides (K/ATO) were coated to fabricate a CDPF. The K/ATO/CP monolith preserves the 3D-network structure of CP while incorporating the mesopores of K/ATO, providing potential for trapping soot particles effectively. Furthermore, electricity pulses are designed to pass through the conductive K/ATO coating on the monolith for CDPF regeneration, achieving nearly complete soot conversion within less than half a minute using 1400 J of energy input. Both the reaction rate and the energy efficiency surpass previously reported those of other methods for soot combustion. Mechanism studies revealed that the electricity pulse can stimulate the release of tremendous lattice oxygen from the catalyst and in turn trigger rapid soot combustion, and boost surface sulfate decomposition to alleviate SO 2 poisoning. This work presents an electrification strategy to realize rapid regeneration of CDPF for effective PM elimination utilizing onboard electricity system for hybrid powers.

The development of highly efficient and stable catalytic oxidation materials is crucial for diesel exhaust aftertreatment systems. In this study, a series of CePrLa x O δ ( x = 0.1–0.5) catalysts with different lanthanum loadings are synthesized using an impregnation method. The influence of high-temperature aged (12 h at 800 °C) and cyclic aged (6 cycles) on the catalytic performance for soot oxidation is investigated. Characterization results suggest that the introduction of lanthanum effectively inhibits catalyst particle agglomeration and high-temperature sintering, while promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies. The catalytic activity tests indicate that Ce 0.63 Pr 0.07 La 0.3 O δ displays significantly better performance after high-temperature aged and cyclic aged. Compared with the undoped lanthanum, the peak temperature (T p ) is reduced by approximately 190 °C and 128 °C, respectively. The prepared catalyst exhibits outstanding carbon soot oxidation stability, significantly enhancing the aged resistance of CeO 2 -based catalysts. This provides crucial evidence for its practical application in Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filters (CDPFs).

Cordierite diesel particulate filters (DPFs) were prepared using pure cordierite powder with organic binders, sodium silicate aids and pore formers by extrusion technique. The orthogonal test method was adopted to investigate the optimal value of the multi-objective and multi-factor problems. Based on results from statistical analysis, sintering temperature is the most important factor. The optimal parameters for balanced overall performance were determined as a 3 h holding time, 10 wt.% pore former, 12 wt.% sintering aid, and a sintering temperature of 1150 °C, representing a compromise among the individually optimal conditions for porosity, compressive strength, and thermal shock resistance identified by range analysis. The sodium silicate liquid increased and viscosity decreased with the increasing of temperature, which led to the formation of glass phases and the improvement of density. Therefore, with increasing sintering temperature, the porosity and coefficient of thermal expansion decreased. Both the mechanical properties and chemical stability of the prepared samples are strengthened. When the sintering temperature was 1150 °C, the prepared samples with high porosity (56.04%), compressive strength (5.88 MPa), bending strength (13.10 MPa), and low thermal expansion coefficient (CTE, 1.82 × 10 −6 /°C) showed the best comprehensive performance of thermal shock resistance and filtration efficiency. These results demonstrate great potential for DPF applications and provide a reference for the design of other honeycomb ceramics with optimum level of liquid phase.
