Growing carbon nanotubes in-situ via chemical vapor deposition and resin pre-coating treatment on anodized Ti-6Al-4V titanium substrates for stronger adhesive bonding with carbon fiber composites

Fei Cheng,Yang Xu,Jinheng Zhang,Lin Wang,Huanhuan Zhang,Qi Wan,Wanpeng Li,Lei Wang,Zhenfei Lv

Adhesive bonding between titanium (Ti) alloy and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is extensively utilized to achieve lightweight and sufficient strength in aircraft structures. In this study, acid pickling, anodizing, heating treatments and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method were applied to Ti-6Al-4V Ti substrates, and CFRPs were grinded to compare the performances. The resin pre-coating (RPC) technique was employed to improve void defects at the channel root of Ti substrate. SEM images indicated Ti substrates surface were covered by growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via CVD and epoxy resin was guided into channel root to reduce defects using RPC treatment. Single lap shear tests results exhibited adhesive bonding strengths of anodized composites were higher than that of acid pickled composites. RPC technique applied to Ti substrates after growing CNTs improved shear strengths by 22.3 % than adhesive bonding directly. The combined treatments of anodizing, CVD and RPC had the shear strength of 23.98 MPa improved by 123.5 % than that of acid pickling, which was higher and more stable than the one via external introduction of CNTs using RPC. The failure mode changed from adhesive failure to dominated cohesive failure. Therefore, the novel combined treatments are effective and suitable for aerospace industries .

Hierarchical microstructure design of CFRP/Al interface with ZnO-nanostructures and Modified resin Pre-Coating: Nano-mechanical interlocking

Shulan Jiang,Ruyi Hu,Xuefeng Liu,Yanyan Cui,Yiru Ren,Hongyong Jiang

This study designs novel hierarchical microstructures of CFRP/Al interface with ZnO-NanoStructures (ZnO-NS) and Modified Resin Pre-Coating (RPC) to in-situ form nano-mechanical interlocking . ZnO-NSs with different growth times are fabricated by hydrothermal method , while the traditional RPC technology is modified by mixing resin-hardener-acetone with different ratios. Combining ZnO-NS and modified-RPC, difficultly infiltrated nanogaps among ZnO-NSs can be fully filled with resin to form flawless interface. Results show that the shear force firstly increases and then decreases with increasing growth time. As compared with no-ZnO-NS, 6 h-ZnO-NS presents a 207.5% higher shear force. When using ZnO-NS with RPC, an obvious reduction confirms that nanogaps are difficult to be infiltrated even through RPC technology. It is interesting that the shear property of sample with the modified RPC firstly increases and then decreases as the ratio changes. An improvement around 275.0% in shear force is identified for the modified-RPC with the ratio of resin, acetone and hardener (3:1:0.6) due to in-situ formed stronger nano-mechanical interlocking. The strengthening mechanisms are analyzed based on failure modes with different ZnO-NS-bridging length. The proposed method is of significance in lightweight material joining technology.

Creating short aramid fiber/epoxy (SAFE) bonding layer on aluminum alloy to improve the adhesive joint with carbon fiber reinforced polymer

Yabo Liang,Tangrui Fan,Fei Cheng,Jinheng Zhang,Shihao Zuo,Botong Chen,Evgeny Lomakin,Daria Bondarchuk,Hao Liu,Xiaozhi Hu

This study focused on bonding strength improvement between aluminum alloy and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite. Laser engraving method was used to create grooves on surface of aluminum substrate, and resin pre-coating (RPC) was used to disperse high-viscosity resin into resin pre-coating solution to be introduced into pre-fabricated structure, which contributed to reducing bonding defects and constructing short aramid fiber/epoxy (SAFE) bonding layer after full evaporation of acetone to improve mechanical interlocking. The results showed bonding strength of composite with engraving space of 0.2 mm and RPC with short aramid fibers was 20.32 MPa, 220.4 % higher than the base. The failure mode was changed from debonding failure on aluminum surface to delamination failure of CFRP. The research confirmed laser engraving and RPC as simple and effective combined methods on improving bonding strength of aluminum-CFRP composites, which could provide a reference for other metal to manufacture high-performance hybrid composites.

Growing Carbon Nanotubes In Situ Surrounding Carbon Fiber Surface via Chemical Vapor Deposition to Reinforce Flexural Strength of Carbon Fiber Composites

Guangming Yang,Fei Cheng,Shihao Zuo,Jinheng Zhang,Yang Xu,Yunsen Hu,Xiaozhi Hu

This study employed novel joint treatments to strengthen the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) were prepared in situ on the catalyst-treated CF surface via the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, intertwining into three-dimensional fiber-nets and fully surrounding CF to form an integrated structure. The resin pre-coating (RPC) technique was further used to guide diluted epoxy resin (without hardener) to flow into nanoscale and submicron spaces to eliminate void defects at the root of VACNTs. Three-point bending testing results showed the “growing CNTs and RPC”-treated CFRP composites yielded the best flexural strength, a 27.1% improvement over the specimens without treatment, while the failure modes indicated that the original delamination failure was changed into “flexural failure” with through-the-thickness crack propagation. In brief, growing VACNTs and RPC on the CF surface enabled toughening of the epoxy adhesive layer, reducing potential void defects and constructing the integrated quasi-Z-directional fiber bridging at the CF/epoxy interface for stronger CFRP composites. Therefore, the joint treatments of growing VACNTs in situ via the CVD method and RPC technique are very effective and have great potential in manufacturing high-strength CFRP composites for aerospace applications. Keywords:carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP);chemical vapor deposition (CVD);resin pre-coating (RPC);vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs);integrated fiber bridging
