The hexagonal epithelial cells covered with mucus are believed to be responsible for the superior adhesion ability of tree frogs under dry and wet conditions. In spite of good progress made in the past years, many questions about the mechanism of wet adhesion remain to be addressed. Here, a tree frog-inspired wet adhesive, termed structured hydrogel adhesive, with poly(acrylamide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel to mimic the hexagonal epithelial cells and glycerol–water mixture to mimic the mucus is reported. The combined analysis of adhesion force and work of adhesion reveals the major contribution of direct solid–solid contact in wet adhesion. The contributions of capillarity and viscosity of liquid are qualitatively decoupled by regulating the fluid components and the temperature. The study offers an excellent model system and a great opportunity to gain deep insight into wet adhesion of animals, like tree frogs, which may pave the way for the design of adhesives for wet environments.

Long-term continuous monitoring (LTCM) of physiological electrical signals is an effective means for detecting several cardiovascular diseases. However, the integrated challenges of stable adhesion, low impedance, and robust durability under different skin conditions significantly hinder the application of flexible electrodes in LTCM. This paper proposes a structured electrode inspired by the treefrog web, comprising dispersed pillars at the bottom and asymmetric cone holes at the top. Attachment structures with a dispersed pillar improve the contact stability (adhesion increases 2.79/13.16 times in dry/wet conditions compared to an electrode without structure). Improved permeable duct structure provides high permeability (12 times compared to cotton). Due to high adhesion and permeability, the electrode's durability is 40 times larger than commercial Ag/AgCl electrodes. The treefrog web-like electrode has great advantages in permeability, adhesion, and durability, resulting in prospects for application in physiological electrical signal detection and a new design idea for LTCM wearable dry electrodes.

Microorganisms with chitin-degrading capabilities play a crucial role in the biological control of crop pests and diseases as well as in the treatment of organic waste. In this study, a chitin-degrading bacterium, designated L2-2, was isolated from the intestine ofOdorrana margaretaecollected in Mount Emei, Sichuan, China. Based on physiological and biochemical characteristics, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of 31 conserved housekeeping genes in the whole genome, strain L2-2 was identified as a member of the genusRoseateles, namedRoseatelessp. L2-2. This strain is able to grow on agar medium with colloidal chitin as the sole carbon source and form clear hydrolysis zones. After optimizing fermentation conditions (including concentrations of nitrogen and carbon sources, culture time, and pH), the enzyme activity was increased to 3.46 U/mL, which was 24 times higher than the initial enzyme activity. Functional genome annotation showed that the strain contains genes encoding endochitinases of the GH18, GH23, and GH46 families, as well as genes encoding β-glucosidases of the GH1, GH2, GH3, and GH109 families, indicating its genetic basis for chitin-degrading potential. This study expands the diversity of known chitin-degrading bacteria and provides a promising microbial resource for the bioremediation of chitinous waste and sustainable pest control in agriculture.
