A novel bio-aerogel based on agroforestry waste chestnut shell for enhanced oil-water separation performance

Ci Wei,Mengxue Li,Hui Wang,Yang Liu,Shunlin Li,Xinyu Li,Zhaoyong Bian

Bio-based aerogels have attracted much attention due to their biodegradability and excellent oil-water separation properties. However, the preparation of inexpensive green aerogels with high separation efficiency is still a great challenge. In this paper, low-density, high-adsorption capacity and superhydrophobic chestnut shell-based bio-aerogels were prepared by chemical cross-linking and chemical vapor deposition using agricultural and forestry waste chestnut shells as the precursor of aerogels to achieve high efficiency of oil-water separation and to achieve the goal of “treating waste with waste”. The covalent cross-linking of chestnut shell cellulose and cross-linking agent to form silicone-containing functional groups improved the pore structure, hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of chestnut shell cellulose, and under the action of capillary force, the oil was retained in the pores of the bio-aerogels, which achieved the selective adsorption of oil and organic solvents in the oil-water mixture, with a separation efficiency of more than 98 %. After 10 cycles, the bio-aerogel still has good reusability. This eco-friendly and low-cost aerogel provides a practical method for resource conversion and recycling, as well as a green and innovative way for the treatment of oily wastewater.

An efficiency strategy for extraction and recovery of ellagic acid from waste chestnut shell and its biological activity evaluation

Juan-Yan An,Li-Tao Wang,Mu-Jie Lv,Jian-Dong Wang,Zi-Hui Cai,Yan-Qiu Wang,Su Zhang,Qing Yang,Yu-Jie Fu

Chestnut shells in large amounts are significantly underutilized agricultural and forestry waste that can be exploited as a resource for the production of high-valued nature active compounds. In this study, an efficient and green approach was established to extract and recover the highly valued phenolic compound, ellagic acid, from waste chestnut shells with choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). By utilizing optimized ultrasonic-assisted extraction conditions with choline chloride/n-propanol DES, solid–liquid ratio of 40 mg/mL, extraction time of 70 min and extraction power of 200 W, highly efficient extraction value for ellagic acid of 4.64 mg/g was obtained. Meanwhile, ellagic acid was recovered easily with a recovery percentage of 94.9% by anti-solvent precipitation method through the denaturation of DES with water. The purity of ellagic acid in the extracts reached 85.6%, which is more than two times to that via ethanol extraction methods (36.4%). In addition, the recovered ellagic acid exhibited strong antioxidant activity with IC 50 (0.309 mg/mL) and significant antibacterial activity with Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) (250 mm) and diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ) (17.60 μg/mL). The anti-solvent precipitation method could denature DES, led to higher extraction and recovery efficiency and high-purity ellagic acid simultaneously in one step. The novel method is of great significance to the whole chestnut production process for the utilization of waste chestnut shells. Furthermore, this method can also be used as a green, pollution-free alternative method for the extraction and recovery of phenolic components from natural resources for pharmaceutical and biochemical applications.

Recycling chestnut shell for superior peroxymonosulfate activation in contaminants degradation via the synergistic radical/non-radical mechanisms

Lu Zhao,Hanlin Zhang,Zhipeng Dai,Ai-Yong Zhang,Jiao Yin,Shuchuan Peng,Heng Liang

The efficient recycling of agricultural chestnut shell waste is of considerable interest due to its large availability and economic feasibility. Herein, an alkaline-activated biochar was thermally prepared using chestnut shell by finely regulating main conditions; its morphological, structural and physic-chemical properties were well characterized. Fenton-like capacity to trigger peroxymonosulfate activation for superior pollutant degradation with high efficiency and good selectivity was validated in different water matrix. Both radical formation and electron transfer were identified as reaction pathways, while the selective non-radical mechanism played the major role in pollutant degradation. Surface ketonic groups were identified as the main reactive sites for non-selective radical production, while crystal edges and structural defects on sp 2 /sp 3 carbon network could smoothly mediate the selective electron transfer from pollutant to oxidant in the non-radical Fenton-like catalysis. The two-mixed radical/non-radical pathways exhibited important advantages for environmental decontamination , in comparison with the one-single radical or non-radical mechanism. Our study provided a promising recycling strategy for agricultural chestnut shell, as well as an environment-friendly catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysis in green water purification rendered by the synergistic radical/non-radical reaction pathways.

Chinese chestnut shell polyphenol extract regulates the JAK2/STAT3 pathway to alleviate high-fat diet-induced, leptin-resistant obesity in mice

Suwen Liu,Wenhong Jiang,Chang Liu,Shuo Guo,Hao Wang,Xuedong Chang

Chinese chestnut shell is a by-product of chestnut food processing and is rich in polyphenols. This study sought to investigate the effect of chestnut shell polyphenol extract (CSP) on weight loss and lipid reduction in a 12-week high-fat diet (HFD)-induced murine obesity model. CSP (300 mg per kg body weight) was administered intragastrically daily. AG490, a JAK2 protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor, was also intraperitoneally injected. The results showed that an HFD induced leptin resistance (LR). Compared to corresponding values in the HFD group, CSP treatment improved blood lipid levels, weight, and leptin levels in obese mice (p < 0.01). Additionally, CSP treatment enhanced enzyme activity by improving total antioxidant capacity, attenuating oxidative stress, and reducing fat droplet accumulation and inflammation in the liver, epididymal, and retroperitoneal adipose tissue. CSP also activated the LEPR-JAK2/STAT3-PTP1B-SOCS-3 signal transduction pathway in hypothalamus tissue and improved LR while regulating the expression of proteins related to lipid metabolism (PPARγ, FAS, and LPL) in white adipose tissue in the retroperitoneal cavity. However, the amelioration of lipid metabolism by CSP was dependent on JAK2. Molecular docking simulation further demonstrated the strong binding affinity of procyanidin C1 (−10.3983297 kcal mol−1) and procyanidin B1 (−9.12686729 kcal mol−1) to the crystal structure of JAK2. These results suggest that CSP may be used to reduce HFD-induced obesity with potential application as a functional food additive.
