Experiments and kinetic modeling of the sorbitol dehydration to isosorbide catalyzed by sulfuric acid under conditions of non-constant volume

Dechang Cheng,Zhihong Ma,Ziyang Liu,Xiaohui Liu,Tao Liu,Weizhen Sun,Ling Zhao

Isosorbide is a novel bio-based material, derived as a secondary dehydration product of sorbitol. This work focuses on the kinetics of sulfuric acid-catalyzed dehydration of sorbitol under conditions of non-constant volume. Herein, the effects of stirring rate, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the dehydration reaction of sorbitol were investigated. The yield of isosorbide up to 77.13% was obtained after 1.5 hours of reaction time under conditions of 2 kPa, 1.0% (mass) catalyst dosage, and 413.15 K. Based on the sorbitol dehydration reaction mechanism and a simplified reaction network, a kinetic model was developed in this work. A good agreement was accomplished between kinetic modeling and experiments between 393.15 and 423.15 K. The fitting results indicate that side reactions with higher activation energy are more affected by reaction temperatures, and the main side reaction that influences the selectivity of isosorbide is the oligomerization reaction among the primary dehydration products of sorbitol. The model fitting of the catalyst amounts effect shows that the effective concentration of sulfuric acid would be reduced with the increase of dosage due to the molecular agglomeration effect. Hopefully, the kinetic experiments and modeling results obtained in this work will be helpful to the design and optimization of the industrial sorbitol dehydration process.

Green Synthesis of Isosorbide from Sorbitol with Dimethyl Carbonate Catalyzed by Sodium Acetate Under Mild Condition

Zhou Lan,Bao Zhuxin,Pi Yanli,Shi Qiuling,Nan Shihao,Xiang Zhiling,Shi Tao,Jin Saimeng,Shen Weifeng

The environmental challenges associated with the dehydration of sorbitol to isosorbide using strong acid catalysts have prompted the development of cleaner and milder reaction pathway. The dehydration of sorbitol via dimethyl carbonate (DMC) in the presence of a catalytic amount of base is a reliable and environmentally friendly process for the industrial production of isosorbide. Herein, isosorbide is cleanly synthesized from sorbitol with DMC catalyzed by green catalyst sodium acetate under moderate condition. The optimal transformation conditions of sorbitol to isosorbide through DMC are determined to be a molar ratio of sorbitol to DMC = 1:16 and sodium acetate/sorbitol mass ratio = 3:20 reacting at 90 °C for 24 h with approximately 60% yield of isosorbide attained. The proposed synthesis process of isosorbide in this research is less hazardous and more environmental-friendly in compared to traditional synthesis processes, and broadens the range of catalysts used in the DMC based isosorbide production. Thermodynamics and Reaction Kinetics of the Sorbitol Dehydration to Isosorbide Using NbOPO4 as the Catalyst

Lei Wang,Xiaohui Liu,Yanqin Wang,Weizhen Sun,Ling Zhao

Isosorbide is a bio-based platform compound, and the solid acid-catalyzed conversion of sorbitol to isosorbide is an environment-friendly process. The thermodynamic calculations and reaction kinetics of the sorbitol dehydration to isosorbide catalyzed by NbOPO4 were studied in this work. The thermodynamic analysis shows that the two-step dehydration of sorbitol is an endothermic process, in which the first one is an irreversible reaction while the second is a reversible one. Based on the reaction mechanism and thermodynamics, a first-order pseudo-homogeneous kinetic model for the sorbitol dehydration was proposed. The modeling fitting results show that the kinetic model established in this work can well fit the experiments in the range of 493.15–523.15 K. The kinetic investigation and thermodynamic analysis indicate that low temperatures would decrease the generation of byproducts in the first step while high temperatures promote the reaction equilibrium forward in the second step. Therefore, a two-stage temperature gradient way with high temperatures followed by low temperatures would be favorable in the conversion of sorbitol to isosorbide catalyzed by NbOPO4. Hopefully, the thermodynamics and kinetic modeling results obtained in this work would guide the design of solid acid catalysts and reactors for the sorbitol dehydration process.

Mesoporous poly(ionic liquid) solid acid for sequential dehydration of sorbitol to isosorbide

Danping Yuan,Fukui Xiao,Ning Zhao,Cunbao Deng,Xin Huang,Hao Zhang,Qianmin Yang,Yonggang Qiao

The catalytic conversion of the biomass platform compound sorbitol to isosorbide is an important reaction for the production of relevant renewable chemicals. The development of highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst materials offers promising perspectives for the sorbitol dehydration reaction. The complex competitive reactions, such as degradation and polymerization, are still a major challenge to obtain isosorbide in high yield. In this work, a series of ionic liquid functionalized polymer catalysts, P-[C 3/4 R]-SF, were successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, which has a high surface area and strong acidity. And the catalysts were fully characterized by the N 2 sorption–desorption isotherms, elemental analysis, water adsorption isotherms, FT-IR, TGA and 31 P NMR, etc. As a result, the as-prepared P-[C 3/4 R]-SF catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability under mild reaction condition (140 °C, 6 h). The yield of isosorbide is up to 75 %, and it still has good catalytic activity after five cycles. This work provides a synthesis method of ionic liquid functionalized polymer catalyst and its application in sorbitol dehydration reaction.

Small Things Make a Big Difference: the Small-molecule Cross-linker of Robust Water-soluble Network Binders for Stable Si Anodes

Wang Dong,Li Zhenwei,Zhang Qian,Liu Jie,Yang Yu,Han Jishu,Wang Lei

Silicon(Si) with high theoretical capacity has attracted tremendous attention as the next-generation anode material for Li-ion batteries, but the huge expansion during cycling restricts its practical application. Designing a low-cost, accessible robust network binder is a facile and effective approach to suppress the volume change effect and achieve the commercial application of Si anodes. Different previous studies focused on the network binder macromolecule main chain, this manuscript pays attention to the study of small-molecule cross-linker. Herein, cross-linked network binders using alginate acid and two kinds of cross-linkers, i.e., D -sorbitol and isosorbide(Alg-DS and Alg-IS binders) are synthesized. It was found that not only the chemical structure of the cross-linker but also the physicochemical property, such as melting point affect greatly the mechanical properties of the network binder. As a result, the Si anode with an Alg-DS binder dried below the melting point of DS shows the best cycling stability with a high capacity of 2249.8 mA·h/g and a retention rate as high as 95.9% after 100 cycles. This study gives a new view to design robust network binders for stable Si anodes.

Preparation of isosorbide by dehydration of sorbitol on hierarchical Beta zeolites under solvent-free conditions

Yilin Shi,Jinhai Yang,Jiong Guo,Shiwei Wang,Danping Yuan,Ning Zhao,Fukui Xiao,Jianfeng Gao

A series of hierarchical Beta zeolites (Q-β) were synthesized using the silanization template method. The characterization results suggested that the pore structure and acidity of the catalysts were influenced by varying the Si/Al molar ratio in the precursor. For the reaction of dehydration of sorbitol to isosorbide, the Q-β-46(8) catalyst exhibited significantly improved catalytic performance with a yield of up to 83 % after 12 h of reaction at moderate temperature (170 °C), higher than any other zeolite catalysts. The catalyst maintained good catalytic performance after five cycles. The unique activity might be attributed to its excellent secondary porosity (77.66 %), higher Brønsted acidic site concentration (63.18 μmol/g) and BAC/LAC ratio (0.172).

Insights into the Role of Deep Eutectic Solvents in Sorbitol Dehydration: A Combined Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Study

Xindi Feng,Dian Jin,Youcai Zhu,Jiale Peng,Yue Mu,Li Sun,Zuoxiang Zeng,Zhen Liu

Dehydration of sorbitol catalyzed by inorganic acids has been regarded as an efficient way to produce isosorbide, which shows application in the manufacture of various high value-added compounds. However, these catalysts can cause equipment corrosion and are not recyclable. As a cheap and environmentally friendly catalyst with special tunability and stability, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA) and choline chloride (ChCl) has emerged to meet the demand for “green production” of isosorbide. The conditions for the dehydration of sorbitol catalyzed by DESs were systematically investigated. The differences in catalytic efficiency stemming from the structural diversity of DESs were explored by FT-IR characterization and molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that isosorbide exhibited notable selectivity (88%) within the DESs (p-TSA:ChCl = 1.2), and achieved a high extraction rate (83%) under the synergistic effect of ethyl acetate and acetone (4:1). MD simulations indicated that hydrogen bonding was the dominant factor influencing the catalytic activity. The theoretical understanding of the p-TSA/ChCl structure may provide a reference for the tunability of novel DESs to meet the requirements of catalysis, absorption, and extraction.

Dehydration of sorbitol to isosorbide over hydrophobic polymer-based solid acid

Danping Yuan,Ning Zhao,Yanxia Wang,Keng Xuan,Feng Li,Yanfeng Pu,Feng Wang,Lei Li,Fukui Xiao

A series of hydrophobic polymer-based solid acid catalysts PDS (x) were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis method of sodium p-styrenesulfonate hydrate (SPSS) and divinylbenzene (DVB), followed by ion exchange. The specific surface area, acid sites concentration and hydrophobicity of the catalyst can be controlled by changing the amount of sodium styrene sulfonate, and the molar ration of SPSS and DVB from 0 to 0.4. Characterization results show that the PDS (x) catalysts have mesoporous structure (9.07–10.82 nm), large surface area (635–1039 m 2 /g), rich acidic sites (0.25–1.72 mmol/g), high thermal stability and super hydrophobicity. Assessed in the dehydration reaction of sorbitol to isosorbide, the catalyst shows a remarkable catalytic performance when the molar ratio of SPSS to DVB is 0.3, yielding up to 81.7%, at 150 °C, which is equivalent that of H 2 SO 4 . The catalyst can be recycled five times with no significant decrease in activity. The superior performance can be attributed to the unique polymer network and acidic property.

Sorbitol dehydration into isosorbide over a cellulose-derived solid acid catalyst

Jie Zou,Dong Cao,Weitong Tao,Shaoyin Zhang,Li Cui,Fanli Zeng,Weijie Cai

The dehydration of sorbitol to isosorbide over an environmentally benign cellulose-derived solid acid catalyst (CCS) has been investigated in order to develop a sustainable process for isosorbide production. The as-prepared CCS sample contained large amounts of –COOH, phenolic hydroxyl and –SO3H groups and presented satisfactory catalytic activity, isosorbide selectivity and recyclability under water-free conditions. Various methods such as BET, XPS, TG, SEM, FT-IR and pyridine adsorption were conducted to characterize the CCS catalyst in order to elucidate the possible catalyst structure–performance relationship. The results of FT-IR and pyridine adsorption revealed that most of the acid sites contained in CCS catalyst were assigned as strong Brönsted sites, which were crucial for catalytic sorbitol dehydration into isosorbide. When further compared to the conventional solid acid catalyst (niobic acid), the investigated CCS catalyst in this study was considered as one of the promising alternatives to the highly efficient catalysts for isosorbide production from sorbitol.

Selective dehydration of sorbitol to 1,4-anhydro-D-sorbitol catalyzed by a polymer-supported acid catalyst

Yuhe Xiu,Angjun Chen,Xuerui Liu,Chen Chen,Jizhong Chen,Li Guo,Ran Zhang,Zhenshan Hou

Novel polymer-supported Brønsted acid polymer catalysts have been successfully synthesized by radical polymerization, followed by a simple solvothermal route and ion exchange step. The as-synthesized co-polymers were characterized by Elemental Analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy and then were employed as a heterogeneous catalyst for dehydration of sorbitol. Especially, the polymer catalysts have a unique advantage of adjustable Brønsted acidity, and the polymer with 1.82 mmol g−1 of Brønsted acidity was a very efficient catalyst for highly selective dehydration of sorbitol into 1,4-anhydro-D-sorbitol. The dehydration reaction can be completed within 4 h and the selectivity of 1,4-anhydro-D-sorbitol achieved 90%. Moreover, the present catalysts resisted acid-leaching and can be recycled in five consecutive cycles without obvious loss of activity.

A facile strategy improving poly(vinyl chloride) stability by introducing unsaturated maleic acid-sorbitol ester and zinc maleic acid-sorbitol ester complex

Jianyu Wu,Zilun Tang,Xiaochun Liu,Wenjing Lin,Minghui Feng,Xiaofeng Lin,Yuxin Gu,Yong Li,Guobin Yi

Herein, as two types of rational designed thermal stabilizers, the maleic acid-sorbitol ester (MS) and zinc maleic acid-sorbitol ester complex (Zn-MS) with unsaturated carbon double bonds were synthesized to improve the initial whiteness and long-term thermal stability for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The successfully synthesized MS and Zn-MS had three functions of replacing the labile chlorine on the PVC chains, reducing the “zinc burning” and absorbing the hydrogen chloride (HCl) released by PVC. After introducing the MS and Zn-MS, the stability time of PVC could be extended to more than 140 min and 120 min at 180 °C, respectively. Additionally, both the MS and Zn-MS had showed lower-torque effect on rheology and less-implications for plate-out in PVC. The addition of MS and Zn-MS could promote the dispersion of composition in the PVC matrix and endow the PVC with better strength and toughness. Meanwhile, in contrast with ZnSt 2 or CaSt 2 , the transparency of PVC sheet stabilized by MS and Zn-MS also showed the higher transmittance, which severally reached to 57.2% and 72.1%.

Preparation of dual active site ionic liquids and their application in the catalytic synthesis of poly(isosorbide carbonates)

Yafei Shi,Haiyue Wang,Qiao Zhou,RongRong Zheng,Liying Guo

Six dual active site ionic liquid catalysts were prepared by using triethylenediamine-grafted 1-bromotetradecane as a cation and coordinating with different organic anions. The structures and properties of the catalysts were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The synthesis of poly(isosorbide carbonates) (PICs) via the transesterification polycondensation of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and isosorbide (ISB) catalyzed by a cation and anion was studied. A single factor experiment was used to investigate optimal process parameters. FT-IR, NMR, TGA, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were adopted to characterize the structures and properties of PICs. The results showed that under the same process parameters, the catalyst using imidazole as an anion had the best catalytic performance. Under optimal process conditions, the conversion of ISB reached 98.82%, the weight average molecular weight of the PIC reached 28 840 g mol−1, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PIC was 149 °C.
