Simulation and experimental investigation of phase change materials within porous metal structures with gradient porosity

Chao Chang,Bo Li,Baocai Fu,Xu Yang,Tianyi Lou,Yulong Ji

As the global economy steadily develops and the rapid growth in industrialization increases, the world is gradually moving towards a serious energy crisis, and finding effective energy utilization methods becomes a consensus. Phase change materials (PCMs) have a wide range of applications in thermal energy storage due to their advantages of high thermal storage density, good cyclic performance, low cost, and environmental friendliness. In this work, the phase change process of the paraffin in uniform and gradient porous metal structures is investigated by simulation and experiments. Thermal storage units combined with paraffin and porous metal structures are designed and fabricated by metal 3D printing technology. A numerical model is established to explore the influence of the gradient porosity and heating source location on the melting process of the paraffin within different thermal storage units. To verify the correctness of the numerical model, visualization experiments are carried out to observe the phase change process of the paraffin. Both the simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the gradient porosity and heating source position greatly influence the paraffin's melting behavior in the porous metal structure. Compared to the uniform porous metal structure, the melting time of the paraffin in the gradient porous metal structure under the bottom and left heating mode can be shortened by 11.26% and 6.21%, respectively. The findings of this study are of considerable scientific and technological interest for developing and optimizing composite phase change thermal storage materials.

Self-Adaptive Metafabric Enabling Thermal Rectification and Radiative–Phase Change Energy Cycling for All-Weather Thermal Regulation

Wei Wei,Yuqing Tian,Zhuwang Shao,Bingwei Bao,Guoqing Chen,Dandan Chen,Chunmao Wu,Bo Wu,Jianhui Chen,Chengyi Hou,Hongzhi Wang

The dynamic interplay between environmental temperature fluctuations and human thermal comfort calls for intelligent textiles capable of adaptive heat regulation. Herein, a complementary, dynamic-responsive, and environment-adaptive metafabric (DREAM) is reported that integrates radiative cooling (RC) with phase-change-driven thermal buffering within a gradient porous architecture. This synergistic design enables closed-loop management of cooling energy through a harvest–storage–release mechanism, achieving effective thermal modulation under diurnal-nocturnal cycles. The high solar reflectivity (≈95.6%) and mid-infrared emissivity (≈95.4%) of DREAM ensure efficient radiative cooling, while embedded high-latent-heat microencapsulated phase-change materials (PCMs) actively respond to thermal loads. Moreover, the engineered gradient porosity imparts directional heat conduction and thermal asymmetry, suppressing external heat gain. Compared to conventional RC textiles, DREAM demonstrates a significantly enhanced cooling capacity (124.4 W m −2 ) and a daytime temperature drop of up to 19.6 °C, while reducing nighttime temperature fluctuations by 84%. Beyond its thermal performance, DREAM exhibits robust mechanical strength, excellent air and moisture permeability, and wash durability, making it promising for wearable and building-integrated thermal regulation. This work offers a material–structure–function co-design strategy for next-generation climate-adaptive textiles.

3D-Printed Bioinspired Meta-Structural Perovskite Catalysts for Dry Reforming of CH4 and CO2

Cunbao Huo,Shuwang Wu,Rongjiang Zhang,Zhiqiang Wu,Xiaoyong Tian,Lei Tan,Kexin Li,Yao Yang,Baojie Wang,Zhun Hu,Lingling Wu,Dichen Li

Conventional packed-bed catalysts suffer from single-scale porosity, insufficient mechanical strength, and suboptimal mass transfer efficiency. Inspired by the fractal structure of the lung bronchi, a design and 3D printing method for gradient meta-structural catalysts is proposed by integrating synthesized LaFe 0.5 Ni 0.5 O 3 (LFN) perovskite with pseudo-boehmite, achieving ultralow pressure drop and high catalytic efficiency. Computational fluid dynamics and reaction simulations guide the design of uniform and gradient-structured catalysts with hierarchical woodpile channels (0.5–3 mm). Compared with homogeneous catalysts, the gradient design theoretically exhibits 1.5-fold and 1.1-fold increases in flow velocity and hydrogen production, respectively. Meta-structural catalysts are fabricated with gradient multi-peak pore distribution (9.32 nm, 103.75 nm) by regionally modulating unit cell sizes and LFN content (11–35%) combined with the dehydroxylation of pseudo-boehmite. 3D-printed perovskite catalysts demonstrate a 78.7-fold increase in specific surface area (102.26 m 2 g −1 ) and compressive strength of 8.48 MPa. In dry reforming of methane (DRM) tests, it achieves 82.13% CH 4 conversion, and 9.69 mmol g −1 syngas yield, outperforming conventional powder-packed beds by 10% efficiency. This study achieves mass transfer and catalytic performance coupling by tuning gradient hierarchical pores and tailoring flow dynamics, offering a paradigm for robust, high-efficiency catalyst design across diverse applications.

Bioinspired Perspiration-Wicking Electronic Skins for Comfortable and Reliable Multimodal Health Monitoring

Yanting Xu,Wei Guo,Shiqing Zhou,Haokun Yi,Guoqing Yang,Shuxing Mei,Kanhao Zhu,Hao Wu,Zhuo Li

Electronic skins (e-skins) have gained tremendous attention in health monitoring and disease diagnosis. However, the accumulated sweat at the skin/e-skin interface would compromise the comfort, reliability, and fidelity for long-term monitoring. Here, inspired by the active liquid transport phenomenon in nature, a biomimetic gold/thermoplastic polyurethane/cellulose membrane (Au/TPU/CM) based e-skin is reported that can “pump” perspiration from the interface immediately through the combination of gradient porosity and surface energy gradient. The resulting electrode possesses good conductivity (2.68 Ω sq –1 ), excellent flexibility (the resistance only fluctuated 1.1% and 0.4% after 10 000 bending cycles and 2500 tensile cycles, respectively), and outstanding water vapor transmission and water evaporation rate (2.2 and 7.1 times as much as that of cotton fabric, respectively). The ultrafast perspiration-wicking capability not only improves the wearing comfort but also minimizes the measurement error of skin hydration and temperature due to perspiration, eliminates the risk of short circuit in sensor array, and reduces the noise level, significantly enhancing the accuracy and reliability of multimodal sensing in e-skins. The design strategy may encourage more material and structure development in e-skins with improved sweat tolerance.
