The service life and stability of flexible pressure sensors vary with the interfacial toughness of these multilayered structures, which are principally fabricated by adhesive bonding, hot melting, and interconnection. However, balancing the trade-off between interface toughness and sensing performance under complex stresses remains challenging. To address this issue, a foam sandwich structure with gradient modulus is constructed by integrating a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/carbon nanotube electrode with a selectively foamed TPU/ionic liquid dielectric. The synthesis is fundamentally inspired by the molecular chain entanglements and hydrogen bonds formed at the electrode/dielectric interface owing to solvent diffusion due to secondary solubilization and differential foaming temperatures. The synthesized sensing structure exhibits ultra-high toughness (3000 J/m 2 ) and dynamic impact resistance (1 J); meanwhile, the sensor shows an ultra-wide sensing range (0.02–2000 kPa), high sensitivity (1.7 nF/kPa), and excellent service stability up to 50,000 cycles under compressive stress (100 kPa), shear stress (30 kPa), bending stress (bending radius of 1.6 mm), and complex stress of 120 kPa (compression stress of 116 kPa and shear stress of 31 kPa). Additionally, on integration into robot grippers, the sensor provides accurate feedback on multi-stage object gripping and can resist shear stress while gripping high-weight objects. This study provides a new strategy for fabricating flexible pressure sensors that can be effectively used under complex stresses.

The gradient modulus intermediate layer between CF and epoxy by designing double “rigid-flexible” structure using CNTs and polyamide (PA) on the CF surface was firstly established, and the effects of modulus intermediate layer on interfacial and mechanical properties of CF composites were investigated. The constructing of double “rigid-flexible” structure on the CF surface can greatly increase the polar functional groups, roughness and wettability of the CF surface as well as the thickness of intermediate layer, which could balance the modulus of fiber and resin to achieve the best matching. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS), interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength , and impact strength of CF composites increased by 75.6%, 44.1%, 41.3%, and 34.6%, respectively. In addition, the interfacial failure behaviors and strengthening mechanisms of composites have been studied. This novel design and method built a multistage gradient modulus intermediate layer of composite with strong physicochemical interaction and good wettability, which has greatly potential for high-performance composite.

Chopped ultra-thin carbon fiber tape reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composites are considered promising materials for balancing the mechanical properties and ease of processing, particularly due to their in-plane quasi-isotropy, which facilitate structural design and manufacturing in the industry. However, further advancement is hindered by the weak interfacial bonding and modulus mismatch between carbon fiber (CF) and PA6 matrix, as well as high porosity of the CF/PA6 composites. In this work, plasma treatment and mixed COOH-carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/PA6 sizing methods are proposed to enhance the surface roughness (Ra) and surface energy of the CF. Compared to untreated CF, the Ra value and surface energy of the modified CF increased by 45.1 % and 69.7 %, respectively. After 0.6 wt% COOH-CNTs modification, the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites reach 900.0 MPa, 48.4 GPa, and 62.3 MPa, which are respectively 24.9 %, 19.8 %, and 36.9 % higher than those of the unmodified composites. In particular, the porosity is reduced to 1.22 %, which is 73.3 % lower than that of unmodified composites. Moreover, the [email protected] wt% CNT/PA6 composites exhibit mitigatory modulus gradient across the interphase. This work synergistically enhances the interface adhesion and reduces the porosity of the CF/PA6 composites via a large-scale continuous modification technology.

A gradient modulus interface layer was designed between the carbon fiber and the epoxy by grafting the rigid polymer PPENK and the flexible polymer PEI. The influence of the interfacial modulus on the mechanical performance of carbon fiber/epoxy composite at different temperatures was analyzed. At room temperature, compared with the desized CF composite , the mechanical properties (interfacial shear, interlaminar shear, flexural strength , flexural modulus , and impact strength) of CF-PPENK-PEI composites were increased by 32.2 %, 11.4 %, 34.8 %, 24.2 % and 20.3 %, respectively. This improvement was attributed to the interfacial phase PPENK-PEI, which improved the roughness and polarity of the CF surface, increased wettability with the matrix, and buffered and balanced the modulus discrepancy between the CF and the epoxy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was confirmed the existence of a gradient modulus interface layer in CF-PPENK-PEI/epoxy composites. Notably, at 180 °C, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength and flexural modulus of the CF-PPENK composite increased by 86.7 %, 92.5 % and 113.0 %, respectively, compared with the commercial CF composite, indicating better thermomechanical stability due to PPENK rigid heteroaromatic structures, which can maintain a high modulus at elevated temperature. Additionally, the dynamic thermomechanical properties of the composites were demonstrated the outstanding thermomechanical stability of the CF-PPENK/epoxy composites interface. Overall, this work provides a theoretical basis for preparing CF composites for use in high-temperature fields.

Flexible pressure sensors face an irreconcilable trade-off among linearity, sensitivity, and signal stability due to viscoelastic creep. Inspired by the gradient modulus characteristics of human skin, this study employs electrospinning to construct a heterogeneous structure composed of a high-modulus nanofiber network embedded in a low-modulus ionic gel. This structure mimics epidermal rigidity (high-modulus nanofiber layer), dermal viscoelasticity (fiber-gel hybrid), and hypodermal compliance (soft ionic matrix) to synergistically redistribute stress and suppress ion migration. The sensor achieves breakthrough performance: a wide linear range (1 MPa) with near-perfect linearity (R 2 = 0.999) and ultrahigh sensitivity (81.3 kPa -1 ), yielding a record linear sensing factor (LSF, 81,300). Simultaneously, it exhibits ultralow creep (1.76% signal drift under sustained loading)—96.8% lower than non-structured iongels—enabled by nanofiber-restricted ion pathways. Theoretical modeling reveals a dynamic compensation mechanism where pressure-induced changes in dielectric properties, contact area expansion, and electric double-layer thinning interact linearly. Laboratory validation demonstrates high-fidelity plantar pressure monitoring during gait cycles and machine learning-based prediction of vertical ground reaction forces with exceptional accuracy (R 2 > 0.95). This work establishes a new design paradigm for high-precision flexible sensing by fundamentally resolving long-standing material limitations.

A dynamic drug-payload release dressing (H@GmJ-P) was logically engineered for promoting diabetic wound healing using two purpose-specific units: a pH/glucose dual-responsive hydrogel and a Janus membrane with centrally graded-thickness. The underlying hydrogels were created by a sequential functionalization strategy with recipes of dopamine-grafted oxidized sodium alginate, methacrylate-phenylboronic acid functionalized carboxymethyl chitosan, tannic acid and borax, which functionalized the H@GmJ-P with excellent bio-adhesive (∼74.5 kPa), antibacterial (>98 %), antioxidant, hemostatic, and self-healing properties. The upper Janus membranes composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) hydrophobic layer and PCL/F127 hydrophilic layer were engineered by thickness-varied design, functionalizing the H@GmJ-P with gradient decreasing modulus from ∼1.5 MPa (middle) to ∼0.6 MPa (periphery) for superior wound tear-resistance (∼197 kPa). Functional collaboration between the two units established unidirectional drug delivery platform following drug-sustained release behavior by pathophysiological wound pH/glucose stimuli. In vivo chronic diabetes skin wound model confirmed that H@GmJ-P promoted wound closure with only 8.2 ± 2.2 % unhealed area by day 21. This work proposes rational design of soft hydrogel dressing with stiff membrane can create matched modulus/tissue adhesion against wound tear. In addition, an innovative regenerative strategy emphasizing precise drug-sustained release offers a novel paradigm for managing challenging wounds.

Carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced epoxy resin (ER)-based composites are promising materials with many application prospects. However, the chemical inertness of the CF surface leads to poor interfacial bonding with the matrix, adversely affecting the mechanical properties, which are regarded as an insurmountable obstacle for their practical applications. Modifying the surface morphology of CFs to increase roughness and constructing a gradient modulus interface layer with rigid-flexible structures of polyimide (PI) on the CF surface to enhance the affinity between CFs and ER. Additionally, the multi-layer interface mitigates internal and external stress concentrations to improve the mechanical properties of the material. Notably, the addition of a flexible PI nanolayer significantly reduces the brittleness of epoxy-based composites, promoting ductile fracture. The reduced contact angle of CFs in polar and non-polar solutions after modification indicates that polydopamine (PDA) and highly polar PI enhance chemical compatibility at the composite interface, increasing the overall surface energy of the CF. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis tests reveal that the excellent heat resistance of PI significantly enhances the thermal stability of the polymer on the modified CF surface. In conclusion, this work provides a feasible method for constructing novel gradient modulus interfacial layers with nanostructured rigid-flexible architectures in ER, offering new insights for designing next-generation advanced composites.
