Cellulose aerogel, a sustainable material characterized by low density and high porosity, demonstrates promising potential for addressing oil spill incidents. In this study, waste cotton stalk biomass was processed using formic acid and hydrogen peroxide to extract cellulose, resulting in the successful creation of a cost-effective aerogel. This material exhibits notable attributes: low density (21.1 mg cm −3 ), high porosity (91.5%), significant hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 147°), exceptional adsorption capacity (47.61 g g −1 ), and robust cycling performance (maintaining 94% adsorption capacity after 15 cycles). Moreover, the CNF/CS biomass aerogel boasts high mechanical strength and exceptional oil–water and emulsion separation properties. These characteristics position this aerogel as a promising solution for mitigating various sudden oil spill incidents, indicating its potential for widespread application.

Although the resource utilization of organic solid waste from biomass (OSWB) has been investigated, it is difficult to completely utilize such resources using the existing methods. Therefore, the development of a comprehensive application method would be very significant. Here, a simple process using chemical oxidation of H 2 O 2 was initially developed to prepare potassium humate (HA-K) from cotton stalk peels. Subsequently, we obtained three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon (3D-HPC) materials by carbonizing and activating the residue after HA-K extraction. Chemical oxidation achieved the effect of “killing two birds with one stone” because it increased the HA-K yield by 40% and the capacitance of the electrode based on 3D-HPC (3OCA-500-650). Compared with the electrode without chemical oxidation, the obtained 3OCA-500-650 exhibited higher specific capacitance (420 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), enhanced an energy density (58 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 1300 W kg −1 ). This work provides a green, facile technology to achieve full utilization of OSWB, which is expected to be effective and scalable for preparing HA-K and electrochemical energy storage materials exhibiting excellent performance.

The creation of a superhydrophobic surface with simplified hydrophobic steps still faces great challenges. Herein, an in situ one-step hydrophobic strategy of growing polysiloxane nanofilaments onto pristine rod-shaped cotton stalk (CS) surface is used to prepare a new bulk superhydrophobic CS absorbent. The rich hydroxyl groups contained in CS directly polymerize with the silanols generated by the hydrolysis of methyltrichlorosilane on CS surface to form polysiloxane nanofilaments, leading to a change in the wettability of the CS surface. This strategy makes the water contact angle of the prepared absorbent as high as 161°, representing exceptional water repellency. Benefiting from the unique natural interconnected pore structures, the absorbent takes only 20 s to reach absorption equilibrium, showing rapid absorption performance toward organic solvents. The absorbent still maintains good absorption capacity even after 20 absorption-desorption cycles, holding excellent recyclability. The proposed hydrophobic modification approach simplifies the steps to the surface hydrophobization of CS, which provides a new strategy for the preparation of biomass-based superhydrophobic materials.

s The green synthesis of artificial humic acid (AHA) is a key approach to the efficient utilization of biomass waste resources. To reduce dependence on strong alkaline agents (KOH, NaOH, etc.) in current humification methods, this study proposes using Saline-alkali soil (SAS) as a cost-effective substitute for producing AHA from biomass solid waste. The results of the study indicated that an AHA yield of 23.33 % ± 1.12 % was achieved through pyrolytic humification under optimal conditions (250 °C, 2 h, with SAS to cotton stalk (CS) ratio of 4: 1). Characterization analysis demonstrated that the SAS supplied an alkaline environment throughout the humification process. Furthermore, the mineral elements in the SAS (Na + , K + , Fe 3+ , and Al 3+ ) facilitated the decomposition of lignin to generate polyphenolic structures, which promoted the protein condensation and increased the aromaticity of AHA. Carbon flow analysis revealed that 60.5 % of the carbon was immobilized, with AHA contributing up to 25.6 % of the total immobilized carbon. Hydroponic experiments demonstrated that the addition of AHA at a concentration of 200 mg L −1 significantly enhanced wheat growth. The residual carbon soil cultivation experiment revealed that the residual carbon exhibited a high specific surface area (6.57 m 2 g −1 ) and effective adsorption properties, achieving a 16 % immobilization rate of Pb and alleviating heavy metal stress on plants. This study presents an innovative approach to the integrated management of SAS and converting biomass solid waste into 'carbon-negative emissions'.
