This study developed a simple, efficient and environmentally friendly fabrication method for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) wipers for the rapid detection of individual and mixed pesticide residues in real samples. Non-toxic NaCl was used to overcome the electrostatic repulsion between cotton swabs and AgNPs in the decorating process. Cotton swabs containing NaCl molecules were immersed in a silver colloid to synthesize a silver-decorated cotton swab (SERS wiper). The fabrication conditions were optimized to improve the performance of the SERS wiper. Under optimal conditions, AgNPs were evenly and densely distributed on cotton swabs within 10 min of the synthesis process. Raman reporter molecules (Rhodamine 6G) were tested and good results were obtained: sensitivity was 2 × 10−9 M, RSDs were within 7.5%, showing good reproducibility and uniformity, and the storage life reached 32 days. Thiabendazole (TBZ), thiram, and their mixture in bitter gourds were successfully detected using the “wipe sampling-detection” method coupled with the SERS wipers. The detection limits of TBZ and thiram were 1 ng cm−2. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and leave-one-out cross-validation methods were employed for quantitative analysis. The linear correlation coefficients of the predicted results and reference concentrations of individual and mixed pesticide residues in bitter gourds were all above 0.99, and the RMSEs were within 7 ng cm−2. These results indicate that the SERS wipers combined with MLR models could accurately and quantitatively detect individual and mixed pesticide residues in real samples.

Recently, food safety has received considerable attention, and various analytical techniques have been employed to monitor food quality. One of the promising techniques in this domain is the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. This study developed a facile, cost-effective SERS method by supporting a wipe-type substrate with a small-head cotton swab. We fabricated Au-nanoparticle (NP)-decorated cotton swabs (CS-Au NP) via the dropwise addition of gold colloid on the cotton fibers. These swabs exhibit reduced gold colloid consumption and a compact fiber structure, allowing for the uniform distribution of Au NPs and easy capture of molecular signals. Experiments were conducted to obtain a CS-Au NP wiper performance optimized for cotton swab selection, NaCl concentration, and Au NP layers. The Raman reporter molecule 4-mercaptopyridine was detected at a concentration of 1 × 10–8 M and a relative standard deviation of ≤10%. The proposed SERS platform enables the facile and reliable detection of food-safety-related molecules such as malachite green on the surface of fruits and vegetables. This paper describes the development of an easy, cost-effective, and environment-friendly method of detecting food-safety-related molecules on various food surfaces through SERS.

We describe the preparation of a cotton swab for use in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) by assembling silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) on common cotton. The flexibility of such cotton swabs allows for a close contact with sample surfaces by swabbing. This can considerably improve the sample collection efficiency. These cotton swabs exhibit excellent SERS activity as shown by the detection of rhodamine 6G at 0.81 pM concentration. The reproducibility of the intensity of SERS peaks is within 10 %. The applicability is demonstrated by in-situ detection of the fungicide carbaryl on a cucumber with an irregular surface. This combination of superior SERS activity, high reproducibility, accessibility in irregularly-shaped matrices and low-cost production indicates that such swabs offer a large potential in analytical SERS.
A cost-effective surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) cotton swab is developed by assembling silver nanoparticles on common cotton. The SERS cotton swab can be used for in-situ sensitive detection of pesticide residue.

Novel and portable cotton swab–based fluorometry was constructed for the first time for 3-aminosalicylic acid (3-ASA) and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) detection. It was carried out by fluorescence enhancement on silver (Ag)–doped black phosphorus quantum dots (Ag@BPQD). Ag@BPQD were prepared from AgNO 3 and bulk black phosphorus in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution by solvothermal decomposition after mechanical exfoliation. Ag@BPQD show blue fluorescence with a quantum yield (QY) of 2.43%. In the presence of Ag@BPQD, 3-ASA exhibited bright blue fluorescence (λ ex = 328 nm, λ em = 448 nm). The fluorescence of 5-ASA was also enhanced significantly and exhibited bright green emission (λ ex = 328 nm, λ em = 484 nm). The linear range of 3-ASA is 0–90 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.10 μM, relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 2.04%, and a recovery range of 98.0–104.3%. The linear range of 5-ASA is 0–120 μM with a LOD of 0.12 μM, RSD ≤ 1.34%, and a recovery range of 98.0–101.3%. When 3-ASA and 5-ASA were mixed in different ratios, the fluorescence showed different colors. The possible mechanism of the interaction between 3-ASA (or 5-ASA) and Ag@BPQD may be ascribed to the generation of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer. To realize convenient detection of 3-ASA and 5-ASA, a Ag@BPQD portable sensing method using cotton swabs were built. The proposed approach provides the detection of 3-ASA and 5-ASA in environmental and biological samples with high efficiency, accuracy and portability. Graphical Abstract

The sensitive detection of foodborne pathogenic and rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) is of great significance. This paper reports the enzyme-triggered in situ synthesis of yellow emitting silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) and the detection of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) O157:H7 in food samples and the rapid AST. The rapid counting of E. coli O157:H7 has been achieved through direct visual observation, equipment detection, and smartphone digitalization. A simple detection platform based on smartphone senses and cotton swabs has been established. Meanwhile, rapid AST based on enzyme-catalyzed SiNPs can intuitively obtain colorimetric samples. This paper established a system for bacterial enzyme-triggered in situ synthesis of SiNPs, with high responsiveness, luminescence ratio, and specificity. The detection limit for E. coli O157:H7 can reach 100 CFU/mL during 5 h, and the recovery efficiency ranges from 90.14% to 110.16%, which makes it a promising strategy for the rapid detection of E. coli O157:H7 and AST.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) causes serious impacts on livestock farms worldwide, especially in the big pig-raising country of China. Development of fast and accurate PRRSV assay is of great significance in early diagnosis of PRRSV infection, which helps control large-scale disease transmission. Herein, we develop a portable and universal colorimetric biosensor for rapid detection of PRRSV with a smartphone-based platform. In the presence of target sequence, a sandwich structure is formed to anchor polydopamine-silver nanoparticles with pH indicators on cotton swabs. The amplified visual information can be captured and analyzed for accurate quantification within the range from 10 pM to 1 μM. Excellent analytical results are also validated challenging real tissue samples from PRRSV infected pigs. Meanwhile, the biosensor can be extended for nervous necrosis virus (NNV) detection from Plectropomus leopardus, demonstrating its great universal utility.
