This study is the first to apply a zero-valent iron (ZVI) system in the treatment of cottonseed oil (CTO) refining wastewater. The results indicated that the ZVI system can effectively degrade and mineralize CTO in the wastewater, whereas sunlight irradiation and O 2 bubbling can considerably enhance CTO degradation, removing 93.5% of CTO and 69.0% of chemical oxygen demand within 180 min. In addition, a low concentration (0.1 mM) of S O 4 2 - and Cl − in the wastewater improved CTO degradation, whereas a high concentration (>1 mM) of these anions considerably inhibited the degradation process. However, N O 3 - at all concentrations hindered CTO degradation. Furthermore, OH and O 2 - were the main active species for CTO degradation in the ZVI system under dark conditions. However, in addition to these two species, photogenerated hole (h + ) played a key role in CTO degradation under sunlight irradiation. This observation might be derived from the photocatalytic effect due to photoexcitation of the iron corrosion product, γ-FeOOH. Our findings show that the ZVI system assisted by sunlight irradiation and O 2 bubbling is feasible for CTO-refining wastewater treatment and can guide the real wastewater treatment project.

An integrated approach was developed for preparing epoxy fatty acid methyl esters (EFAMEs) from cottonseed using a two-phase solvent extraction (TPSE) process followed by sequential base-catalyzed transesterification and epoxidation reactions. The TPSE process was performed to achieve simultaneous production of high-quality crude cottonseed oil and nontoxic cottonseed meal. The base-catalyzed transesterification of the cottonseed oil proceeded smoothly at 30 °C over 2 h to provide a high yield of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). Subsequent epoxidation of the unsaturated FAMEs using petroleum ether as a non-polar solvent, H 3 PO 4 as a catalyst, 0.3 g/g H 2 O 2 as an oxygen donor, and HCOOH as an oxygen carrier gave the corresponding EFAMEs with a conversion to oxirane of 0.85 g/g. The order of effectiveness of catalysts was found to be H 3 PO 4 > TiO 2 > H 2 SO 4 > strong-acid cation exchange resin. The bio-based integrated process and new methods for the preparation of modified EFAMEs show great promise for comprehensive development and commercial applications of cottonseed with fewer steps and lower cost.

To address the challenge of achieving multisite functionalization of inert C═C bonds in plant oils while preserving the triglyceride scaffold to develop high-performance and recyclable thermosets, a universal strategy is proposed based on thiol–ene click chemistry and dynamic thiocarbamate networks. Pentaerythritol tetrakis(mercaptoacetate) is employed to introduce multiple thiol groups onto the double bonds without disrupting the triglyceride structure. Subsequent polymerization with isocyanate monomers yields tunable thermosets, with tensile strength ranging from ∼10 to 40 MPa and elongation at break from ∼5% to ∼1300%. The dynamic thiocarbamate bonds enable solid-state reprocessability (68%–101% recovery) and self-healing (75%–94% healing efficiency). A sunlight-driven synthesis is developed as a green alternative to UV initiation, producing resins with comparable performance. The retained triglyceride motifs also allow enzymatic degradation, with over 40% mass loss within 30 days. This work provides a versatile platform for upcycling plant oils into high-performance polymers with mechanical robustness, recyclability, and end-of-life degradability, enabling a closed-loop lifecycle.

Polyglycerol fatty acid ester (PGFE) is one kind of non-ionic biosurfactant with excellent emulsifying property, physicochemical stability, and biodegradability. In this work, a low-cost liquid lipase Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) was used as an eco-friendly biocatalyst to promote the esterification of polyglycerol-3 (PG3) and fatty acids (FA) from soybean oil waste soapstock for PGFE production. Effects of lipase load (0.1–0.6 wt%), reaction temperature (50–100 ℃), substrate ratio of PG3 to FA (1.0:1–2.0:1, mol/mol), and time (0.5–12 h) on the esterification were evaluated and optimized by central composite design. The high FA conversion (84.31%) was obtained under the optimal conditions: 0.54 wt% lipase load, 1.5:1 molar ratio of PG3 to FA, 84 °C, and 5.8 h. In PGFE products, the contents of mono-ester, di-ester, and tri-ester were 43.77%, 39.03%, and 17.20%, respectively. Additionally, PGFE showed excellent in vitro antioxidant efficiency and decreased 62% peroxide value in soybean oil system after 21 h of storage at 105 ℃. Graphical abstract

The development of a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based lubricants is a major challenge. In this study, layered double hydroxide (LDH) vegetable oil gels were prepared from stearic-acid-intercalated LDH (LDH-SA) and vegetable oil. The effects of content of LDH-SA and types of vegetable oils on the rheological properties of the gels were studied. The effects of several plant-derived antioxidants on the oxidative stability of LDH-SA gels were also investigated. Further, the tribological properties of LDH-SA gels were studied and compared with those of a lithium grease under the same conditions. The results showed that LDH-SA gels exhibit the typical rheological properties of grease, such as viscoelasticity, shear thinning, and structural thixotropy . Tocopherols , tea polyphenol, gallic acid , and their combinations can enhance the oxidative stability of LDH-SA gels. The tribological experiments showed that LDH-SA gels maintained the inherent excellent tribological properties of their corresponding vegetable oil. LDH-SA gels provide a new idea for the development of environmentally friendly lubricants.
