Cotton fibers are widely used in various applications due to their biodegradability, low cost, and extensive availability. The cottonseed is associated with cotton, which has a large yield. After oil extraction, the remaining cottonseed meal has a high protein content, making it a potential flame retardant for cotton fibers. This paper proposes the concept of homologous flame retardant for cotton fiber, and presents research on Cottonseed Meal Modified Flame Retardant - Homologous Durable Flame Retardant Cotton Fiber. The experiment results showed that the flame retardants CmP prepared by phosphating cottonseed meal is an effective flame retardant for cotton fiber. Both CmP1 and CmPN demonstrated self-catalytic durable grafting on the surface of Cotton fiber. Notably, the durable flame retardant CmP1-cotton and CmPN-cotton prepared by DICY catalysis exhibit superior durability and flame retardant properties, with damage lengths of 53 mm and 86 mm, respectively, and the LOI value is more than 35 %. FT-IR, XPS, and SEM results confirmed that the flame retardant was durably grafted onto the fiber surface and the superficial layer. XPS and SEM results of flame retardant cotton and char residues of TG and CCT are displayed that the two kinds of flame retardant cotton fabrics are mainly condensed phase flame retardant mechanisms, with a synergistic gas-phase effect.

Separation of oligosaccharides with a varied number of monosaccharides is an important issue in food chemistry. Raffinose, a functional oligosaccharide, has attracted increasing attentions due to its strong proliferative effect on bacteria. Industrially, cottonseed meal is an important resource for producing raffinose; however, raffinose extracted from the cottonseed meal contains a significant amount of sucrose that debases raffinose’s quality. In this work, an adsorptive separation of raffinose and sucrose on activated carbon was reported. Adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and dynamic column adsorption–desorption were investigated. The activated carbon chosen has a significantly higher adsorption capacity of raffinose (0.60~0.65 g/g) than sucrose (0.35~0.40 g/g) at the equilibrium concentration studied (~35 g/L) and temperature from 293 K to 333 K. Adsorption isotherms and kinetics were fitted by the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The effect of flow-rate and initial feed concentration on dynamic adsorption were investigated; meanwhile, the separation performance was further confirmed from dynamic desorption using aqueous ethanol of 20% as eluant. Remarkably, raffinose with purity over 90% and recovery of 79.2% could be obtained by the adsorption–desorption cycle using an aqueous feed solution containing 20 g/L of raffinose and 6 g/L of sucrose.

A method utilizing high-performance liquid chromatography with evaporative light scattering detection (HPLC-ELSD) has been developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of raffinose, glucose, sucrose, and stachyose in waste liquid from cottonseed processing and in byproducts including cottonseed meal. The separation was performed using a carbohydrate ES column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) and isocratic elution with acetonitrile and water (70:30, v/v). The temperature of the column oven was maintained at 35 °C. The drift tube temperature for evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) was operated 40 °C, while the nitrogen flow was set to 1.5 L·min−1. The saccharides were separated by HPLC-ELSD within 20 min. The coefficients of determination (R2 = 0.9986–0.9999) indicate that there was a linear relationship between saccharides and the response. The limits of detection were 0.004–0.023 mg·mL−1 and the quantification range was from 0.013 to 0.080 mg·mL−1. The intraday and interday precision were from 0.05 to 0.55% and 0.20 to 0.58%, respectively. The recovery was from 102.75 ± 2.03% to 106.76 ± 2.09% and the relative standard deviations were 1.87 to 1.98%. The method exhibited good stability in determining four saccharides in cottonseed processing waste liquid and the resultant byproduct cottonseed meal. This method exhibits high separation efficiency and sensitivity, excellent precision, and simplicity, which allows determination of the high value-added product, raffinose, in cottonseed processing waste liquid and meal.

The concept of homologous flame retardant of cottonseed meal to cotton fiber is reported. According to the chemical bond characteristics of the amide bond, ester bond, and glycosidic bond in crude protein, crude fiber, and crude fat cottonseed meal, we developed a new system of H 2 O 2 -H 3 PO 4 degradation of dissolved cottonseed meal to prepare flame retardant. The study focuses on preparing water-soluble flame retardant (H 2 O 2 -H 3 PO 4 degradation Cottonseed meal, HPCm) by one-pot degradation of cottonseed meal and achieving durable flame retardancy for cotton fiber. The controllable degradation and dissolution conditions were optimized by orthogonal experiment, achieving a degradation rate of cottonseed meal that reached 88.4 %. The LOI of flame retardant cotton fiber after washing 50 LCS was still maintained at 36.2 %, and the damage length was 55 mm when the concentration of flame retardant HPCm was 60 g/L. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and cone calorimetry showed that HPCm exhibited a synergistic flame retardant mechanism dominated by condensed phase flame retardant and supplemented by gas phase flame retardant. This method successfully produced a durable flame retardant for cotton fiber.

Biomass had been extensively explored and applied in many fields due to their abundance, attractive structure, low cost, renewability, and environmental friendliness. Cottonseed meal (CM), one of the by-products of cotton, consisted of much crude protein, fiber, and inorganic ions, was a potential carbon precursor. In this work, CM was used to prepare N, S, and O self-doped carbon materials by two steps (hydrothermal pre-carbonization and K 2 CO 3 carbonization–activation) processes. The optimized material displayed high capacitive performance, which benefited from the large surface area (2361 m 2 /g), hierarchical porous structure and rich multi-heteroatoms doping of the prepared porous carbon . What's more, we prepared a new-type K 2 CO 3 -based deep eutectic solvent (DES) electrolyte. The assembled symmetric device using DES electrolyte displayed a superior energy density (34.4 Wh/kg) at room temperature. Furthermore, the energy density could reach 36.5 Wh/kg when the temperature rose to 50 °C. Even under extreme conditions, the device delivered a not particularly bad energy density (11.8 Wh/kg at −25 °C and 8.6 Wh/kg at 105 °C). This study provided an efficient and simple method to prepare CM-based heteroatoms self-doped porous carbon materials and uncovered a new possibility for the exploitation of carbon-based supercapacitors with high energy density.
