A sensitive and portable on-thread pre-concentration and colorimetric detection method of copper ions was proposed. Commercial cotton thread was proposed as a solid sorbent for effectively extracting copper ions (Cu 2+ ) from solution. The adsorbed Cu 2+ was converted to Cu + by ascorbic acid . The Cu + on the threads was visualized by horseradish-peroxidase-catalyzed color changes of a chromogenic oxidized tetramethylbenzidine substrate. The adsorption of Cu 2+ on the plasma- and Na 2 CO 3 -treated thread was verified by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and zeta potential characterization. The Cu + -induced dysfunction of HRP on the thread was verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With optimized reaction conditions, the concentration-dependent colorimetric response plot was characterized, where the linear detection range was 2–400 nM and the detection limit was about 0.15 nM. Measurements of a group of possible interfering ions and spiked real-water samples demonstrated the good selectivity of the proposed method. The proposed on-thread pre-concentration and colorimetric detection offers a low-cost and effective alternative for detecting of copper ions in real applications.

Cotton thread has been proposed as a new, economically affordable material for the fabrication of microfluidic circuits for use in fast, low-cost, point-of-care diagnostic testing devices. In this work, chitosan, a biocompatible polymer, was used to modify cotton thread to improve its fluidic properties for microfluidic applications. Electrostatic-interaction-mediated adsorption of chitosan on alkaline-scoured thread can effectively increase thread’s solution hydrophilicity and wicking rate. Moreover, the proposed process conserves the thread’s hydrophilicity and fluidic properties even when stored for several months. As a microfluidic platform for enzymatic-reaction-associated colorimetric measurement, the suggested chitosan modification results in the accumulation of more analyte in the detection zone because of the improved flow rate, which enhances the colorimetric signal intensity. In this study, a glucose oxidase-mediated colorimetric glucose assay was demonstrated on a chitosan-modified microfluidic thread-based analytical device (μTAD). A linear range of 1–7.5 mM, a low detection limit of 0.2 mM, and a recovery rate between 93 and 98% was achieved in detecting glucose in artificial urine samples.

Cotton fiber is a biodegradable material that possesses properties such as high specific area, adjustable shape, and hygroscopicity. In this work, organic polymer was directly in situ grown on the surface of cotton thread and packed into a poly(ether ether ketone) tube for online in-tube solid-phase microextraction. The novel strategy solves the problems like high backpressure and tedious optimization process of normal monolithic polymer-based in-tube solid-phase microextraction capillary. The quaternary ammonium typed ionic liquid of 1-allyl-methylimidazolium chloride, 4-vinylbiphenyl, and ethylene dimethacrylate were co-polymerized and in situ grown on the surface of cotton thread as extraction phase. The solid-phase microextraction tube showed excellent performance for the extraction of three nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs including ketoprofen, naproxen, and flurbiprofen due to the strong ion exchange and hydrophobic interactions. After online coupling with a high-performance liquid chromatography system by six-port valve, the method was applied for the quantitative analysis of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in human plasma samples showing good enrichment performance (enrichment factor between 263 and 279), high sensitivity, good linearity, and good reproducibility.

A cotton yarn biosensor based on electrochemical transistor functionalized with MWCNT and PANI was developed for the detection of urea. The transistors based on PANI/MWCNT/cotton yarns under optimized MWCNT concentration has been obtained, which exhibited high on/off current ratio, fast response time, and good operational stability. A transistor-based urea sensor was prepared from PANI/MWCNT/cotton yarns, which could monitor urea in the 1 nM–1 mM linear range with the correlation coefficient of 0.9716. Furthermore, the sensor showed superior reproducibility and high specificity. The practical applications of the proposed sensor were also confirmed. These results indicate the flexible transistor can be used as an efficient platform for biological detection in body fluids.

Flow velocity control is of great interest for passive microfluidic devices that are used in point-of-care diagnostics. Various methods have been developed for the flow velocity control of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs), whereas fewer attempts have been made for microfluidic thread-based analytical devices (µTADs). In this research, we attempt to control the flow velocity in cotton thread-based µTADs with electroosmotic pumping. Utilizing electroosmotic pumps, the flow velocity in the cotton thread-based µTADs can be decreased or increased by 13% and 106%, respectively. Moreover, the dynamic control of the flow velocity in the cotton thread-based µTADs is achieved by adjusting the real-time magnitude and direction of the voltage. Furthermore, we demonstrate that electroosmotic pumps can be used to overcome the hydrophobic valves in the cotton thread-based µTADs. We show that the delivery sequence of different liquid samples for a three-branch µTAD can be controlled. Finally, we show the potential application in lithium detection with a colorimetric assay. This method for flow velocity control shows promise for customizing the flow velocity and reaction time of cotton thread-based µTADs, and this method can potentially increase the sensitivity of detection.

Herein, we demonstrate a concept of making flexible thermoelectric (TE) generators by applying cotton thread as the platforms for poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and Argentum (Ag) paste through selectable coating method. The coated thermoelectric cotton thread can be sewed on the flexible fabrics with different knitting pictures and form thermoelectric devices. The most important is that the temperature gradient of the device was in the direction of cross-plane of the flexible fabrics, that is, between the inner and outer surfaces of clothing, therefore the flexible device can be easily wore on the body since the temperature gradient between the human body and surrounding environment is in the cross-plane direction. The maximum output power of the device with thirteen P N type legs reached 1.15 μW at a temperature gradient of 50 K when the load resistance matched the resistance of the module. Cotton-based TE device coated with P3HT may be useful for the development of self-powered wearable electronics.

In this study, an efficient and practical method was established to enrich and detect three trace quinolones in fish tissue. Low-cost and environment-friendly cotton threads were coated with PCN-224 using a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The PCN-224-modified cotton threads (PCN-224@CTs) were characterized to ensure that the crystal was successfully fabricated on the surface of cotton threads. The prepared PCN-224@CTs were wrapped around steel needles to form suspended bars. Key factors of extraction and desorption were optimized, and analytical performance was tested. Suspended bar sorptive extraction coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with a photodiode array detector was used to analyze the quinolones in fish tissue. The detection limits of quinolones were 0.26–1.15 ng/mL, and the recoveries were achieved in the range of 81.31%–115.81%, indicating a simple method with high sensitivity and satisfactory practicability of enriching, separating, and detecting trace quinolones was successfully established.

Abstract Development of wearable devices for in situ monitoring biological analytes in sweat has been fueled up in the past few years. Although microfluidic thread/paper-based analytical device (μTPAD) fulfills the requirements of wearable systems on flexibility and biocompatibility, it has not been employed as a sensing system for the in situ sweat analysis. In this work, we developed a wearable μTPAD containing a cotton thread and a functionalized filter paper for non-invasive, quantitative and in situ monitoring of human sweat glucose with the assistance of a smartphone. The oxygen plasma was applied to tailor the wicking property of the cotton thread. Amounts of enzymes and reagents on the filter papers were optimized to achieve the high-performance colorimetric sensing of glucose. The as-prepared device possesses a dynamic range of 50–250 μΜ and a detection limit of ~ 35 μΜ. Because of its great wearability and compatibility with conventional textile industry, the μTPAD was integrated with an arm guard to sensitively detect glucose in human sweat. This work may provide a low-cost, easy to use wearable device based on the cotton thread and filter paper for human sweat analysis. Graphical abstract

Abstract Lateral flow assays (LFAs) have been extensively used as point-of-care testing platforms because they are inexpensive, portable, simple, and rapid, which particularly improve their availability in resource-poor settings. However, the poor sensitivity of LFAs restricts their further applications. Herein, we proposed a novel and simple method to enhance the detection sensitivity of LFAs by embedding cotton thread-based barriers into paper and further integrating them into strips to decrease the flow rate of sample and extend the reaction time. The number and hydrophilicity of the embedded cotton threads were sequentially optimized. The flow rate of liquid in cotton thread-embedded LFAs was mathematically simulated using a circuit-like model and the simulation results are consistent with the experimental results. With using human immunodeficiency virus nucleic acid as a model target, the cotton thread-embedded LFAs presented a fourfold enhancement in detection sensitivity compared to that of the unmodified LFAs. The strategy of embedding cotton threads into paper possesses great potential for fabricating other paper-based microfluidic devices in the future. Graphic abstract

In this study, a natural cotton thread immunoassay device combined with gold nanorod (GNR) reporter probe is developed for the rapid, sensitive and quantitative electrochemical determination of human ferritin, a lung cancer related biomarker. Human ferritin as an analyte and a pair of monoclonal antibodies are used to demonstrate the proof-of-concept on the cotton thread immunoassay device. An enhancement of the sensitivity is achieved by using gold nanorod as an electroactive report probe compared with a traditional gold nanoparticle (GNP) report probe. The device was capable of measuring 1.58 ng/mL ferritin in 30 min by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) testing, which meet the requirement for clinical diagnosis.

Fibriform supercapacitors (FSC) are promising energy storage devices for wearable electronics which require excellent durability and fabric-like wearable comfort. In this work, we successfully converted commercial cotton threads (CT) into electrically conductive and electrochemically active threads by introducing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) using a large-scale producible method (dip-coating combined with low-temperature vapour reduction). The rGO coated CT (rGO-CT) has impressive conductivity which is attributed to the wrapped rGO nanosheets and it is steady enough to tolerate washing process for a long time. After coated with CNPs, the conductivity of CNPs/rGO composites coated CT (CNPs/rGO-CT) has been enhanced tremendously. Meanwhile, the rGO nanosheets with implanted CNPs form the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructures which provide abundant ion transmission channels. Furthermore, we have prepared the CNPs/rGO-CT based FSC, which exhibits high volumetric capacitance (3.79 mF cm −3 at 50 mV s −1 ), well cycling stability (95.23% capacitance retention after 10000 charge-discharge cycles), and excellent electrochemical stability (92.30% capacitance retention after 2000 bending cycles). Especially, the CNPs/rGO-CT based FSC maintains great capacitive performance when it was knitted into textile, thus making it meet the high performance requirements of energy storage devices for knittable and wearable electronics.

At present, the topic of building high-performance, miniaturized and mechanically flexible energy storage modules which can be directly integrated into textile based wearable electronics is a hotspot in the wearable technology field. In this paper, we reported a highly flexible fiber-shaped electrode fabricated through a one-step convenient hydrothermal process. The prepared graphene hydrogels/multi-walled carbon nanotubes-cotton thread derived from natural cotton thread is electrochemically active and mechanically strong. Fiber-shaped supercapacitor based on the prepared fiber electrodes and polyvinyl alcohol-H 3 PO 4 gel electrolyte exhibits good capacitive performance (97.73 μF cm −1 at scan rate of 2 mV s −1 ), long cycle life (95.51% capacitance retention after 8000 charge-discharge cycles) and considerable stability (90.75% capacitance retention after 500 continuous bending cycles). Due to its good mechanical and electrochemical properties , the graphene hydrogels/multi-walled carbon nanotubes-cotton thread based all-solid fiber-shaped supercapacitor can be directly knitted into fabrics and maintain its original capacitive performance. Such a low-cost textile thread based versatile energy storage device may hold great potential for future wearable electronics applications.
