Unraveling the effects of gallic acid on Sb(III) adsorption and oxidation on goethite

Tong-liang Wu,Qian Sun,Guo-dong Fang,Pei-xin Cui,Cun Liu,Marcelo Eduardo Alves,Wen-xiu Qin,Dong-mei Zhou,Zhen-qing Shi,Yu-jun Wang

Natural organic matter (NOM) profoundly influences the metal(loid)s immobilization by iron (Fe) minerals, which, in turn, are the host phase for Sb that control its mobilization and bioavailability. However, the potential effect of the redox-active phenolic acids derived from NOM on this process has rarely been explored. Therefore, the adsorption of Sb(III) on goethite and Sb(III) oxidation in the presence of a common phenolic acid—gallic acid (GA)—was systematically investigated. The reaction mechanisms were unraveled by the combination of wet chemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Our results showed the addition of GA significantly inhibited Sb adsorption on goethite as the pH increased. Except for the competitive adsorption by GA, the inhibition also resulted from the extensive Sb(III) oxidation in the suspension and the lower Sb(V) sorption capacity of goethite at higher pH. The alkaline condition facilitated the generation of reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide) and quinone species (semiquinone radical (SQ − ) and oxidized GA), accounting for the significant Sb(III) oxidation in the solution and on the goethite surface. Besides, the edge-sharing inner-sphere complexes were formed between Sb and goethite regardless of the presence of GA. Our findings demonstrated the remarkable role of the phenolic groups in NOM on the adsorption of Sb(III) on goethite.

Chitosan immobilized Chinese gallotannin: A potential adsorbent to enrich the rare metals Ge (Ⅳ), Ga (Ⅲ), and In (Ⅲ)

Cheng Huang,Kun Li,Hong Zhang,Wenwen Zhang,Yanlin Sun,Shujie Xing,Ying Shao,Jing Zhu,Yalan Chen,Long Chen

In this study, a solid adsorbent based on Chinese gallotannin and chitosan was generated and applied to adsorb rare and scattered metals, including Ge (Ⅳ), Ga (Ⅲ), and In (Ⅲ), from simulated zinc plant leachates. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) were performed to characterize the grafting way of Chinese gallotannin on the chitosan matrix. It was clearly showed that Chinese gallotannin was immobilized on the chitosan by Schiff-base condensation and phenol-formaldehyde reaction at the molar ratio of glutaraldehyde to tannin of 2:1. And the amount of chitosan amino groups was ten times that of tannin, with an initial pH of 4. The adsorption experiments showed that an appropriate increase in pH was more beneficial to enhance the adsorption capacity of immobilized Chinese gallotannin (ICGT). At a temperature exceeding 30 °C, the immobilized tannin became less sensitive to temperature. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the adsorption of the three scattered metals by ICGT followed a quasi-second-order kinetic equation , with chemisorption as the mechanism. The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir model, indicating uniform adsorption sites on the surface of ICGT. The adsorption capacities of Ge (Ⅳ), Ga (Ⅲ), and In (Ⅲ) in solution by the adsorption model of monolayer were 61.39 mg/g, 63.82 mg/g, and 59.92 mg/g, respectively. Mechanical property and stability tests showed that ICGT had good resistance to harsh adsorption conditions of scattered metal ions .

Facile Strategy to In Situ Synthesize Gallic Acid-Modified Lignin and Its Utilization for Fabricating Conductive and Self-Adhesive Hydrogels as Strain Sensors

Xiaoyu Shi,Kai Wang,Shishuai Gao,Daihui Zhang,Chenhuan Lai,Can Jin,Mi Li,Chunpeng Wang,Qiang Yong,Fuxiang Chu

As lignin is one of the most abundant renewable resources, utilization to fabricate functional hydrogels has gained increasing attention. However, the heterogeneous structure and the few available functional groups of lignin limited its applications. Herein, we presented a simple strategy to synthesize gallic acid (GA)-modified lignin as a key component to prepare conductive hydrogels. The addition of GA during the organic solvent pretreatment of poplar changed the structure of lignin and increased the total content of phenolic hydroxyl groups from 3.20 to 3.89 mmol/g (EOL-G30). Moreover, the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated poplar was enhanced from 49.1 to 55.2% (OP-G30) at a low enzyme loading of 5 FPU/g. When using GA-modified lignin to prepare hydrogels, the resulting hydrogel exhibited excellent self-adhesion to various substrates and demonstrated effective free radical scavenging capabilities. When incorporating sodium chloride (NaCl) as conductive ions, the hydrogels exhibit reliable strain-sensing capability. Moreover, they also displayed robust functionality in a low-temperature environment (−20 °C). This study has presented valuable insights to realize in situ modification of lignin and fabricate lignin-based functional materials, offering new perspectives for the biorefinery industry.

Colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode assay for antioxidant capacity of gallnuts based on CuCo nanozyme and AIE luminogen

Yiming Yang,Junlei Liu,Wenying Li,Yueqing Zheng,Wei Xu

In this work, we present a dual-mode assay system consisting of a nanozyme and a luminogen with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature. In the assay system, the chosen nanozyme named CuCo-0 catalyzes the substrate to produce colorimetric signals, while the aggregates of H 4 ETTC (4,4′,4″,4‴-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl) tetrakis ([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid), a typical AIE luminogen, generate fluorescent signals. The peroxidase-like activity of the CuCo-0 nanozyme can be remarkably suppressed with sequential additions of antioxidants , leading to a dual-signal response characterized by enhanced fluorescence emission and reduced UV-vis absorbance. On this basis, a dual-mode assay capable of producing both colorimetric and fluorescent signals for the assessment of antioxidant capacity using gallic acid as a representative antioxidant was exploited. Good linearity can be obtained in the 0–60 μM range for both colorimetric analysis and fluorescent analysis, with detection limits of 1.3 μM and 0.35 μM, respectively. Furthermore, this dual-mode assay was successfully applied to real gallnut samples, yielding satisfactory results.

Camellia Oleifera shells derived nano cellulose crystals conjugated with gallic acid as a sustainable Pickering emulsion stabilizer

Miral Javed,Yanqun Xu,Haixin Sun,Huang Hao,Dong Li,Anam Matloob,Yan Xiaowei,Zisheng Luo

Lately, emulsions with low-fat and natural stabilizers are predominant. This study extracted the nano cellulose crystals (NCs) from Camellia Oleifera shells, and their gallic acid (GA) conjugates were synthesized by free-radical grafting. Pickering emulsions were prepared using NCs 1 %, 1.5 %, 2.5 %, and gallic acid conjugates NC-GA1, NC-GA2, and NC-GA3 as stabilizers. The obtained nano cellulose crystals exhibited 18–25 nm, −40.01 ± 2.45 size, and zeta potential , respectively. The contact angle of 83.4° was exhibited by NC-GA3 conjugates. The rheological, interfacial, and microstructural properties and stability of the Pickering emulsion were explored. NC-GA3 displayed the highest absorption content of 79.12 %. Interfacial tension was drastically reduced with increasing GA concentration in NC-GA conjugates. Rheological properties suggested that the low-fat NC-GA emulsions showed a viscoelastic behavior , increased viscosity, gel-like structure, and increased antioxidant properties. Moreover, NC-GA3 displayed reduced droplet size and improved emulsion temperature and storage stability (28 days) against phase separation. POV and TBARS values were reduced with the NC-GA3 ( P  < 0.05). This work confirmed that grafting phenolic compounds on NCs could enhance bioactive properties, which can be used in developing low-fat functional foods. NC-GA conjugates can potentially fulfill the increasing demand for sustainable, healthy, and low-fat foods.

Schiff's base crosslinked gelatin-dialdehyde cellulose film with gallic acid for improved water resistance and antimicrobial properties

Myat Noe Khin,Md Easdani,Tariq Aziz,Ashwag Shami,Nada K. Alharbi,Fahad Al-Asmari,Lin Lin

Gelatin is a versatile biopolymer for bio-packaging, but its poor water resistance and susceptibility to deterioration limit its application. This study addresses these limitations by forming a Schiff's base through crosslinking gelatin with dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) to enhance mechanical properties and water resistance. The crosslinking degree was investigated using the ninhydrin method and, also visually identified through a yellow-brown color formation. Crosslinking increased tensile strength (TS) from 30.2 ± 1.6 MPa to 37.3 ± 3.9 MPa and improved UV barrier properties, with a 30% increase in UV-B and UV-A protection compared to the pure gelatin film. Gallic acid (GA) was incorporated at concentrations ranging from 1% to 5% to improve the antimicrobial properties and shelf life of the film. Films with GA inhibited E. coli and S. aureus and resisted fungal growth on the film for more than 20 months. Furthermore, incorporation of GA further enhanced TS, elongation of break (EBA), barrier and hydrophobic properties of the composite film. The highest tensile strength was achieved with 3% GA (49.4 ± 4.5 MPa). EBA improved with higher GA concentrations, reaching a 44% improvement at 5% GA compared to the non-GA film. Oxygen permeability dropped from 5.7 ± 0.1 to 4.3 ± 0.1 cm 3 /m 2 d 0.1 MPa, and water vapor permeability decreased from 6.7 ± 0.75 × 10 −11 to 4.2 ± 0.07 × 10 −11  g m/m 2 s Pa at 5% GA. Despite these benefits, the films remained vulnerable to high acidic conditions. This study demonstrates that Schiff's base crosslinking of gelatin with DAC, combined with GA, results in durable, antibacterial bio-based packaging films with enhanced strength and barrier properties.

Polymerization and Dyeing Properties of Gallic Acid on Silk Fabric Catalyzed by Horseradish Peroxidase

Baek Na-won,Fan Xue-rong,Yuan Jiu-gang,Xu Jin,Wang Qiang

Due to the increasing importance of environmentally friendly processes, the development of monomer synthesis and its polymerization using enzymes has been investigated throughout the world. In this paper, the polymerization mechanism between silk fabrics and gallic acid (GA) in the presence of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has been studied. The polymerization mechanism was studied in detail using UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS) analysis. In addition, the dyeing properties and optimum reaction conditions were further investigated using the K/S values. The color fastness of the resulting silk fabrics has also been discussed. The results show that the dyeing mechanism for GA and silk fabric involved linking via the -NH 2 and -OH groups in silk fiber and the -OH groups in GA. This was probably formed via the formation of phenyl-phenyl, oxygen-phenyl, or amino-phenyl linkages. HRP significantly improved the dyeing properties of GA dyes toward silk fabrics. The optimum reaction conditions for dyeing silk fabrics have been proposed (Incubation period, 5 h; temperature, 50 °C; GA dosage, 10 mM; HRP, 6 U/ml, and H 2 O 2 , 5 mM). The color fastness of the resulting silk fabrics displayed high colorfastness in all the colorfastness tests performed.

Biobased thiol-epoxy shape memory networks from gallic acid and vegetable oils

Yechang Feng,Yang Hu,Limin Man,Teng Yuan,Chaoqun Zhang,Zhuohong Yang

Shape memory polymers play an increasingly significant role in the fields of electronics, aerospace and medical science. However, the most of shape memory polymers are derived from petroleum resource nowadays. Herein, biobased thiol-epoxy shape memory network was obtained from gallic acid-based thiol and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). The resulting network shows good shape memory performance with the shape-fixity ratio of 98.7%, shape-recovery ratio of 97.7% and   excellent cycle stability, which is comparable to the petroleum counterparts. Further, epoxidized vegetable oils were incorporated into the above thiol-epoxy network to investigate the effect of epoxidized vegetable oils on the properties of the resulting networks. After introducing the vegetable oils, shape-fixity ratios show irrelevance with the network structures and keep above 96%. Shape-recovery ratio declines with the increase of epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) contents, but when ELO content equals to 20 wt% of DGEBA, shape-recovery speed enhances compared to the network without epoxidized vegetable oils. This is the first attempt to fabricate the thiol-epoxy shape memory networks from renewable biomasses.

Preparation of acylated pectin with gallic acid through enzymatic method and their emulsifying properties, antioxidation activities and antibacterial activities

Guoguang Zhang,Chenmin Zheng,Bingqing Huang,Peng Fei

In this study, native pectin (Na-Pe) was acylated with gallic acid through enzymatic method. UV–Vis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton NMR analyses demonstrated that the phenolic hydroxyl group on gallic acid attacked the carbomethoxy of Na-Pe and replaced the methoxy group to form a new ester group under catalysis. The galloyl content of acylated pectin prepared via 24-h reaction (Ac1-Pe) was 16.8%, while that prepared via 48-h reaction (Ac2-Pe) reached 20.7%. The emulsifying properties, antioxidation activities and antibacterial activities of acylated pectin was significantly improved compared with those of Na-Pe. The emulsion activity and emulsion stability of the pectin emulsion improved from 1.08% and 56.13% (Na-Pe) to 1.57% and 88.27% (Ac1-Pe) and 1.71% and 93.3% (Ac2-Pe), respectively. The DPPH clearance of the pectin improved from 2.68% (Na-Pe) to 68.92% (Ac1-Pe) and 76.98% (Ac2-Pe) and the inhibition ratio in the β-carotene bleaching assay of the pectin increased from 3.15% (Na-Pe) to 73.02% (Ac1-Pe) and 78.96% (Ac2-Pe). The inhibition rate of the pectin against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus also improved from 2.93% and 8.92% (Na-Pe) to 26.95% and 42.18% (Ac1-Pe) and 31.56% and 47.87% (Ac2-Pe), respectively.

Tannin-Immobilized Collagen/Cellulose Bead as an Effective Adsorbent for Cu(II) in Aqueous Solutions

Zhang Min,Ding Cuicui,Chen Lihui,Huang Liulian,Yang Haiyang

Collagen/cellulose bead was prepared by the reconstitution of collagen and cellulose (collagen/cellulose mass ratio = 1/6) from 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate. Based on this, a novel bio-adsorbent, bayberry tannin immobilized collagen/cellulose (BT-CC) bead, was obtained via the reaction of collagen with bayberry tannin. The adsorption properties of BT-CC to Cu(II) in aqueous solution were investigated. Results from SEM and XRD indicated the well preservation of structure after the adsorption of Cu(II). Furthermore, the maximum decomposition temperature of BT-CC after the adsorption of Cu(II) was even increased for ∼7 °C, confirming the stability of BT-CC. The adsorption of Cu(II) on BT-CC displayed pH-dependence and the maximum adsorption was obtained at pH = 5.0. Based on the mass content of collagen, the maximum adsorption capacity of BT-CC was 0.73, 0.96 and 1.12 mmol/g at 298, 308 and 318 K, respectively, according to the experimental adsorption isotherms. In kinetics studies, the adsorption equilibrium at both of 298 and 318 K reached within ∼300 min, and the experimental data could be well fitted by the pseudo-first-order rate model. Furthermore, good adsorption properties of BT-CC remained after three cycles of adsorption–desorption. These results indicated that high stability, great adsorption capacity and good reusability of BT-CC as the adsorbent to Cu(II) could be obtained.

Codeposition of Gallic Acid and Polyethylene Imine on Carbon Fiber Surfaces to Enhance Interfacial Properties of Epoxy Composites

Lin Liu,Xu Xin,Wu Jing,Zhang Lin,Li Jialiang,Zeng Xiaoyu

Abstract Inspired by mussel heuristic chemistry, a novel method for improving surface wettability and adhesion of carbon fibers with epoxy resins was proposed by codepositing gallic acid and polyethylene imine on the carbon fiber surfaces in a convenient operation. The results of scanning electron microscopy, infrared, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectra revealed that gallic acid and polyethylene imine could undergo Michael addition or Schiff base reaction and codeposit on the carbon fiber surfaces successfully. The gallic acid-polyethylene imine codeposited carbon fibers were used to fabricate epoxy matrix composites. The results of mechanical tests showed that interlaminar shear strength, flexural modulus and strength of the gallic acid-polyethylene imine codeposited carbon fiber composite were increased by 27, 38, and 27% respectively, compared with those of the untreated carbon fiber composite. The conclusion can be drawn that the gallic acid-polyethylene imine codeposition is an effective method for improving interfacial properties of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin matrix composites.

Preparation of gallic acid-polydimethylsiloxane codeposited carbon fibers to improve interfacial properties of epoxy composites

Lin Liu,Xin Xu,Jing Wu,Lin Zhang

A novel method, drawing inspiration from the chemistry principle observed in mussels, has been recently developed to augment the wettability and adherence of carbon fibers (CFs) within epoxy resin matrix. This technique entails the concurrent application of gallic acid and aminopropyl double terminated polydimethylsiloxane on CF surfaces via a direct method. Advanced analytical techniques like scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, confirmed the effective simultaneous deposition of these agents, possibly via Michael addition or Schiff base reactions. Incorporation of these treated fibers into epoxy composites resulted in notable performance enhancements. The composites with gallic acid and polydimethylsiloxane modified fibers exhibited up to 14%, 13%, and 27% improvements in interlaminar shear strength, flexural modulus, and flexural strength, respectively, compared to their counterpart with untreated fibers. These results indicate that combining gallic acid and polydimethylsiloxane on CFs is a potent approach to boost the interface qualities of CF-reinforced epoxy resin composites.
