Effects of oxidation and hydrolysis of frying oil on MCPD esters formation in Chinese fried dough sticks

Yuan Yuan,Congcong Cui,Hui Liu,Xuenan Li,Yue Cao,Yan Zhang,Haiyang Yan

In this study, we investigated the influence of various factors on the formation of 2-monochloro-1,3-propanediol and 3-monochloro-1,2-propanediol (MCPD) esters in Chinese fried dough sticks. The results showed types of oil significantly affected the content of MCPD esters in fried dough sticks, with palm oil responsible for the highest. As well, temperature and time affected the content of MCPD esters ( P  < 0.05). Treatment at 200 °C for 4 min resulted in 1.87 mg/kg 3-MCPD esters and 0.68 mg/kg 2-MCPD esters, respectively. The dough containing 1 g/100 g NaCl was fried at 180 °C for 4 min, resulting in elevated levels of MCPD esters. MCPD esters in fried dough sticks constantly varied during the 8-h cycle in 3 consecutive days and the 12-h frying cycle. Pearson correlation test showed 3-MCPD esters had a positive correlation with 2-MCPD esters ( R  = 0.920), which allowed 3-MCPD esters to be a representative index of MCPD esters. A good correlation between the acid value (AV), p -anisidine value ( p -AnV), color (ΔΕ) of frying oil and MCPD esters in fried dough sticks was also found. The changes of MCPD esters of fried dough sticks were assumed to be caused by oxidation and hydrolysis of oil during frying.

Elucidating the role of fatty acid reprogramming in ovarian cancer: insights cross-talk between blood, subcutaneous fat, and ovarian cancer tissues

Xiaocui Zhong,Mamona Bilal,Yanqiu Zhou,Xiaojia Yang,Zuchao Qin,Qibing Li,Yang Yang,Ting-Li Han,Min Li

Introduction Aberrant fatty acid (FA) metabolism is increasingly recognized as a significant factor in ovarian cancer (OC) progression, although the comprehensive metabolic alterations across different body tissues remain unclear. Methods In this study, sixteen OC patients and twenty-nine non-cancer (NC) patients were recruited for metabolic profiling using a global and targeted metabolomic strategy based on a gas chromatography-hydrogen flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The patient survival was followed up to 3 years, and PFS was calculated. Results Our findings revealed distinct metabolite profiles that differentiate OC from NC groups across all sample types. We found seven, nine, and thirteen significant metabolites in subcutaneous fat, plasma, and ovarian tissue respectively. In particular, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA) levels were notably elevated in all sample types of OC patients. Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis highlight that three plasma FA showed the best specificity and sensitivity in differentiating the OC group from the NC group (Area Under The Curve, AUC > 0.89), including caprylic acid, myristoleic acid, and tetracosaenoic acid. Most of the significant FA in subcutaneous fat and ovarian tissue showed a high risk of OC. However, caprylic acid and tetracosanoic acid were identified as protective factors in the plasma sample. We also found that high levels of linoelaidic acid in subcutaneous fat and palmitelaidic acid in ovarian tissue were associated with poor prognosis. Pathway analysis indicated upregulation of fatty acid synthesis, inflammatory signaling, and ferroptosis pathways in OC patients. Discussion This study reveals a coordinated reprogramming of FA metabolism across multiple biospecimens in OC patients. Our results suggest that specific fatty acids may contribute to OC progression through dysregulation of fatty acid synthesis, inflammatory signaling, and ferroptosis. These findings offer mechanistic insights into OC progression and highlighting potential biomarkers and targeted therapeutic interventions.

Biobased comb polyurethane hot-melt adhesives consisting of dangling fatty acid chains and H-bonds for tailoring bonding strength

Zhen Huang,Shimin Geng,Yizhen Chen,Ying Li,Mingen Fei,Renhui Qiu,Tingting Chen,Wendi Liu

Traditional polyurethane hot-melt adhesives often fall short in achieving high bonding strength and recyclability, and their dependence on non-renewable resources poses a significant hurdle for sustainable development. In this study, a palm oil-based diethanolamide (POEA) containing a long aliphatic chain was synthesized to develop comb thermoplastic polyurethane hot-melt adhesives (POPUs) with high biobased content, superior adhesion strength, and reusability. The microphase separation structure of POPUs was manipulated through the incorporation of dangling fatty acid chains and hydrogen bonds, resulting in the adhesives with excellent mechanical properties, with an optimum tensile strength of 5.37 MPa and an elongation at break of 282 %. As a hot-melt adhesive, it achieved a maximum lap-shear strength of 7.34 MPa on steel and maintained an average strength of 95 % of its initial value across multiple bonding cycles. Moreover, its lap-shear strengths with wood and glass remained at 6.57 MPa and 3.57 MPa respectively, fully meeting the requirements for interior decoration. Additionally, it was unexpectedly discovered that the adhesives possessed fluorescence characteristics, which can be applied in fields such as cultural relic restoration and anti-counterfeiting.

One-step hydrodeoxygenation of palm oil to isomerized hydrocarbon fuels over Ni supported on nano-sized SAPO-11 catalysts

Qiying Liu,Hualiang Zuo,Tiejun Wang,Longlong Ma,Qi Zhang

Nano-sized SAPO-11s were hydrothermally synthesized with using di-n-propylamine (DPA) as structure-directing agent in mixed n-tetradecanoamine–n-propanol–H 2 O medium and the Ni/SAPO-11 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The catalysts was characterized by XRD, SEM, BET, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD and TG techniques and their catalytic performance was tested in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of palm oil to hydrocarbon fuels. Surfactant n-tetradecanoamine could mediate the minimum SAPO-11 sizes into 20–50   nm. As comparing to the commercial SAPO-11, the nano-sized SAPO-11s presented significantly enlarged surfaces and mesoporous volumes, which offered sufficient space and strong interactions for dispersing Ni. One-step HDO of palm oil demonstrated that the nano-sized SAPO-1 supported Ni catalysts showed the high yield (80%) of liquid hydrocarbons, high isomerization selectivity (80%) and excellent stability due to that the catalyst presented appropriate acidity, higher Ni dispersity, balance of metal (Ni) and acid (SAPO-11) functionalities and fast diffusion for bulky palm oil and products. These promotion effects observed over the nano-sized SAPO-11 supported Ni catalysts indicated the potential application in biorefinery of vegetable oils to hydrocarbon fuels.

Sustainable and eco-friendly dyeing of traditional grass cloth with a reactive dye in palm oil medium

Lina Lin,Lexin Xiao,Le Li,Cong Zhang,Md. Nahid Pervez,Vincenzo Naddeo,Youqing Zhang,Md. Shahinoor Islam,Yingjie Cai,Mohammad Mahbubul Hassan

Traditional grass cloth has been used in China for a long time for the manufacturing of various household furnishing textiles and ladieswear. However, traditionally the grass cloth is dyed with reactive dyes in an aqueous medium, but the dyeing process is not sustainable because of high energy and water usage and the production of coloured effluent. In this work, the possibility of palm oil/water dual-phase dyeing of traditional grass cloth with a reactive dye, C.I. Reactive Blue 194 (Reactive Blue 194), was explored. The grass cloth soaked in an alkaline solution with 80–140% pick-up was dyed in a palm oil dyebath containing dye powder dispersed in a palm oil medium. The initial study confirmed that the pre-treatment of the fabric with an alkaline solution with 140% pick-up was beneficial for the uniform distribution of the dye in the fibres. The dyeing process parameters (e.g., fixation temperature, solution pH, and fixation time) for the grass cloth dyeing with the Reactive Blue 194 were optimised by using the Taguchi method. The pH of the alkali pre-treatment solution was found to be the most influential factor, as confirmed by the analysis of variance in terms of the percentage of contribution (94.41%), which was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The confirmation tests were carried out under optimal settings, and a higher K/S (24.06) was found compared with the initial condition (21.51). X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the dyeing process did not affect the crystallinity of the grass cloth fibres. Furthermore, the recovery of palm oil from the spent dyebath was around 99%, and up to five times recycling and reuse of palm oil were studied for the dyeing of grass cloth. The colour strength of the grass cloths dyed in the palm oil recycled up to five times was similar to the cloth dyed in fresh palm oil. The results show that palm oil can be used as a dyeing medium for the sustainable dyeing of grass cloth with effluent reduction, which can be extended to the dyeing of other textile fibres.

Photocuring Three-Dimensional Printing of Thermoplastic Polymers Enabled by Hydrogen Bonds

Yuchao Wu,Mingen Fei,Tingting Chen,Chao Li,Shuyi Wu,Renhui Qiu,Wendi Liu

The advent of 3D printing has led to a new era of highly customized products. Printing reprocessable thermoplastic polymers is limited to slow printing techniques such as fused deposition modeling. Photocuring 3D printing is a high-speed 3D printing technique suitable for photocurable thermosetting resins because the cross-linked 3D network could achieve rapid solid–liquid separation during printing. However, thermoplastics usually cannot be printed via photocuring 3D printers because rapid solid–liquid separation is hard to be achieved due to the diffusion/dissolution of linear molecular chains in their liquid precursor. Herein, we hypothesize that hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between monomers may accelerate polymerization and reduce solubility of the polymer in liquid precursors to achieve rapid solid–liquid separation. Using this strategy, a series of UV-curable methacrylic and acrylic monomers was selected as inks to demonstrate the role of H-bonds in photocuring 3D printing. The hypothesis was further verified by using blended inks of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NVP) and acrylic acid (AA) via experimental and molecular dynamic simulation. Oil palm occupies the top position of plantation species in southeastern Asian forests. Palm oil (PO) has the lowest price compared with other plant oils. Thus, a PO-based vinyl monomer was selected as the raw material for 3D printing thermoplastic polymers. Various biobased thermoplastics were successfully printed from the PO-based monomer and commercial monomers. The amide structure in the PO monomer formed H-bonds with polar monomers, including NVP and AA, resulting in printed 3D objects with surprising functionalities such as high stretchability and self-healing ability.

Study on the enrichment of palmitoleic acid in Sn-2 monoester from sea-buckthorn fruit oil

LI Ying,LEE Xiangjun,GUO Jianfeng,FENG Jingjing,XU Chenshuai,BAI Yujie,GUO Shiwei,WANG Fang

Palmitoleic acid (C16:1n7, POA), a 16-carbon ω-7 monounsaturated functional fatty acid, has been demonstrated a variety of beneficial properties to human health and a wide range of applications in nutrition, medical and chemical industries. Lipozyme® RM IM (Rhizomucor Miehei lipase), a Sn-1,3 specific lipase, was used to catalyze the hydrolysis of seabuckthorn fruit oil and produce monoglycates rich in palmitoleic acid. The fruit oil of seabuckthorn was used as the research object, the dosage of enzyme taking 10% wt.% oil, the influence of water/oil ratio, pH value and reaction temperature to hydrolysis rate were investigated, and then the response surface methodology was applied for optimizing the process conditions. Further, the relationship between the hydrolysis rate and the content of monoacylglycerol was studied under the optimal hydrolysis conditions. The result indicated that the optimal combined condition is as follows: the reaction temperature is 55°C, the pH is 7, the water-oil quality ratio is 1:1. The hydrolysis rate achieved 79.59% within 12 h in the condition above. Under the optimal conditions, the hydrolysis rate was positively correlated with the content of monoester, and the correlation coefficient was 0.999 within the first 10 h of the reaction. The hydrolysis rate was 66.76% at 10 h, and the content of monoglyceride reached the highest of 61.11%. Hereafter, the hydrolysis of monoglyceride began if the reaction continued. The content of palmitoleic acid increased from 27.11% to 40.84%, and that of linoleic acid increased from 4.51% to 33.34%, so the total amount of the two functional fatty acids reached 74.18%. Enzymatic hydrolysis can be an effective way to improve the function of seabuckthorn fruit oil.

Photo-Curing 3D Printing of Highly Deformable Palm Oil-Based Thermosets with Soft Fatty Acid Chain Entanglement

Yong Zeng,Di Sha,Liyuan Zhang,Yizhen Chen,Renhui Qiu,Wendi Liu

Photo-curing three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is normally used for the manufacture of covalently cross-linked thermosets due to its high efficiency and resolution. However, printed thermosets are mostly derived from petroleum resources and tend to be highly brittle and poorly deformable. Herein, renewable palm oil (PO) was used to fabricate highly robust and deformable bio-based thermosetting networks with an intrinsic soft phase assembled by long fatty acid chains via a liquid crystal display 3D printing technique. A PO-based methacrylate (MPOEA) with two C═C bonds and a fatty acid chain was synthesized via an amidation and esterification strategy. Isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) with a stiff alkyl ring was selected as a comonomer for MPOEA to form photosensitive MPOEA-IBOA inks. The printed MPOEA-IBOA networks possessed a satisfactory combination of the cross-linking density, the molecular distance between cross-linking points, and the soft phase distributed in the matrix. Therefore, the optimally designed thermosets exhibited a tensile strength of 52.1 MPa, a fracture elongation of 8.2%, a flexural strength of 57.3 MPa, a flexural deflection of 34.6 mm, a Tg of 105.1 °C, and excellent shape memory behavior. The formation mechanism of the fatty acid chain soft phase and its effects on the UV-initiated curing rate, gel content, dynamic mechanical property, thermal stability, and micromorphology of the MPOEA-IBOA polymer were fully investigated.

Effects of Different Pretreatments to Fresh Fruit on Chemical and Thermal Characteristics of Crude Palm Oil

Minmin Tang,Qiuyu Xia,Brendan J. Holland,Hui Wang,Yufeng Zhang,Rui Li,Hongxing Cao

This study selected 5 methods, including boiling, hot air drying, high-pressurized steam, freezing, and microwave radiation to pretreat fresh oil palm fruit before solvent extraction of the oil. Using fresh fruit as a control, the pretreatment methods were compared for the effects on the activity of the 2 main enzymes in the fruit and some physicochemical properties of the crude palm oil. The results indicated, although all the 5 pretreatments could inactivate lipase and peroxidase in the treated flesh significantly ( P < 0.05), the high-pressurized steam was the most effective. There were also differences in the unsaturated fatty acid contents of the 6 oils. The crude oil from frozen fruit contained significantly more vitamin E (37829.33 ppm) than previously reported. Microwave radiation was shown to significantly decrease the free fatty acid content and the peroxide value, while increasing the oxidative stability index. Thermal behaviors of the oils were significantly different to each other with the exception a few parameters ( P < 0.05).

Novel acid-base dual-activity heterogeneous Ba40-Ce15/ZSM-5 catalyst for biodiesel production: RSM-based optimization and performance analysis

Xin Li,Jie Zhu,Shengli Niu,Yue Zheng,Yang Xu

Biodiesel, known for its low carbon emissions and renewability, offers a promising alternative to fossil diesel. Support loading and additive modification are effective strategies for synthesizing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts. This study modified ZSM-5 zeolite with the addition of divalent barium ions and tetravalent cerium ions to develop the novel acid-base dual-activity Ba-Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst for biodiesel production from the acidified palm oil through transesterification. Characterization results show that the synergistic loading of the divalent barium ions and the tetravalent cerium ions generates snowflake-like particles on the multi-porous ZSM-5 surface and increases the density of catalytic active sites. Compared to the pure ZSM-5, the Ba40-Ce15/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibits nearly a five-fold increase in average pore size and forms the hierarchical pore structure. This modification reduces the diffusion resistance of triglycerides during transesterification. The catalyst retains excellent activity even in the presence of 5.00 wt% free fatty acids and moisture. With optimization by Response Surface Methodology with Box-Behnken Design (RSM-BBD), the maximum biodiesel yield of 97.48 % is achieved at the alcohol-to-oil molar ratio of 14.95 : 1, reaction temperature of 149.6 °C, catalyst amount of 6.73 wt%, and reaction duration of 2 h. Compared to previously reported catalysts, the Ba40-Ce15/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibits superior performance in increasing biodiesel yield while offering greater cost-effectiveness.

Preparative chromatography behavior of palmitoleic acid on octadecyl stationary phases with different densities

Gaowa Jin,Lijie Liu,Yuanliu Yang,Yan Zhang,Ping Zhao,Dongping Yu,Yongzheng Zhou,Zhimou Guo,Hui Wang,Xinmiao Liang

The availability of various high-purity unsaturated fatty acids has a wide range of needs due to their different activities. The nonlinear preparative chromatography behavior and principle for purification of palmitoleic acid with octadecyl bonded stationary phases were studied. The peak broadening and the concentration distribution of the target compounds were used to compare different C18 stationary phases. In preparative liquid chromatography, the C18 stationary phases with low, medium, and high bonding density showed different peak broadening and concentration distribution results. Medium bonding density C18 was suitable for the purification of ethyl palmitoleic acid. The forward broadening was much greater than the backward broadening on medium bonding density C18 column. And the highest concentration distribution of impurities and the main peak was not crossed in this column. Due to the low content of crude ethyl palmitoleic acid sample, a two-step purified method yields an oily product with purity of 96.57% in the GC method. This method would be universal and extensible for constructing purification method for other unsaturated fatty acids.

Hydrotreating of Palm Oil into Bio Jet Fuel through a One-Step Process over Nb Doping Pt/AlSiO-Nb Catalyst

Jingxu Liu,Yanning Ren,Yi Zhao,Haoyun Zhou,Xiaohui Liu,Yong Guo,Yanqin Wang

The hydrotreatment of fats and oils for biofuel synthesis significantly contributes to carbon emission mitigation. Conventionally, this process necessitates a bifurcated pathway encompassing hydrodeoxygenation (HDO)/decarboxylation (DCO) and subsequent isomerization reactions. In this research, we synthesized a niobium-doped bifunctional catalyst, denoted as Pt/AlSiO-Nb, capable of concurrently executing HDO and isomerization of palm oil. Our examination of the palm oil hydrotreatment network, with palm acid and tripalmitin as representative model compounds, revealed that the oil undergoes hydrolysis to form fatty acids and then undergoes deoxygenation to n-alkanes via HDO or DCO routes, succeeded by n-alkane isomerization, where cracking reactions also transpire. Comprehensive characterizations of the catalyst delineated that niobium incorporation markedly augments the support–platinum interaction and proliferates the catalyst’s medium and weak acid sites, culminating in enhanced HDO and isomerization performance. These insights herald a novel methodology for biofuel generation from fats and oils, offering a streamlined approach to their catalytic transformation.
