Mutual Inductance-Based Array Sensor for Continuous Monitoring and Mapping of Localized Brain Deformations

Ziwei Liu,Jianzheng Li,Yapeng Fu,Sijia Yu,Wenjun Li,Yiqing Yang,Jiajia Wang,Sihui Yu,Peiwen Yu,Kailiang Xu,Yajie Qin,Songlin Zhang,Huisheng Peng,Xuemei Sun

The brain undergoes constant dynamic deformations, which are intricately linked to its intrinsic properties and pathological states. However, continuous monitoring of these deformations presents significant challenges due to the limited temporal and spatial resolutions of conventional imaging techniques. Here, it is developed an implantable deformation array sensor capable of real-time, continuous monitoring and mapping of brain deformations. The sensor features microcoil arrays embedded in ultrathin films and operates based on the principle of mutual inductance, achieving exceptional temporal resolution (<100 µs) and distance resolution (<5 µm). It is implanted the sensor between the skull and the cortex and successfully tracked continuous brain deformations across four cortical sites in rat models. These experiments are conducted under scenarios of isoflurane inhalation, mechanical impacts, and intracranial hemorrhage, where such detailed monitoring and mapping has not been achieved previously. The results reveal that brain deformations dynamically vary over time in response to both physiological fluctuations and pathological events, with deformation amplitudes decreasing as the distance from the primary site increases. This innovative approach provides a novel platform for exploring brain dynamics and their associations with neurological disorders and disease progression.

Customizable, self-healing, and biocompatible microLED-hydrogel integration displays

Jianan Niu,Jiangwen Wang,Yuanhong Shi,Zilong Dong,Tianci Huang,Xinhuan Dai,Wei Sha,Yong Long,Weiguo Hu

Visualization is a fundamental interface method for efficient human-computer interaction, encompassing the evolution of visual displays from large screens to mobile devices, and now advancing toward implantable displays. we have developed a hydrogel composite display with high transparency (95 % visible light transmittance), high electrical conductivity, and self-healing properties. We proved a vapor-phase bulk transfer protocol to transfer high-performance, small-sized (94 μm), and high-resolution (254 PPI) GaN micro-LED arrays (100 × 100) onto hydrogel substrates with minimal damage, high precision, and meticulous patterning. The self-healing ability of the hydrogel enables arbitrary cutting and splicing for future human-computer interaction display products, breaking through the limitations of various sizes and conformations. Moreover, the dehydration curing/hydration recovery process accomplishes an impressive secondary molding function for the display. Building upon these advancements, we have developed an ultra-thin (200 μm) implantable biocompatible display that is only 1/10 the thickness of the dermis to enhance human-computer interaction experiences. With the deepening interactions between people, machines, and the meta-universe in the future information society, hydrogel-based self-healing micro-LED displays will meet the diverse needs of various visual perception carriers.

A reliable, battery-free and implantable magnetic sensing system for wireless monitoring of spinal motion in rats and humans

Yunsong Shi,Sihan Tang,Weifeng Zhang,Chunchi Lei,Xiaobo Feng,Kun Wang,Yamei Yue,Qi Wang,Annan Chen,Jin Su,Hu Zhao,Chunze Yan,Yujia Tian,Kun Zhou,Jian Lu,Cao Yang,Bin Su

Continuous monitoring of spinal and joint motions in patients allows surgeons to optimize patient rehabilitation. However, the current monitoring approaches are achieved via tethered devices, which are inconvenient and associated with a risk of infections. In this study, we developed and validated a new type of reliable wireless, battery-free, and implantable sensing system (RWBS) for the real-time monitoring of physiological bending of spines and joints. The RWBS exploits the unique movement-sensing capabilities of an implantable flexible magnetic strip, the signals from which are detected with an external receiver. We implanted this magnetic strip beneath the skins of Sprague Dawley rats and human cadavers and demonstrated that in combination with the receiver, the magnetic strip enabled real-time in vivo and wireless monitoring of motions in both rats (anesthetized/awake) and human cadavers. The adaptability of RWBS in other human bones has been verified by sensing the motions of elbow joints and knee joints. The simple design of the RWBS allowed it to continue functioning in vivo after the magnetic strip had been broken into two or more pieces, indicating its high reliability. Thus, the RWBS is biocompatible, exhibits excellent functionalities, and can be conveniently implemented in both rats and humans. This device will help to facilitate the post-surgery monitoring of spinal and joint movements of human patients.

Flexible triboelectric hydrogels for underwater communication and implant devices

Bin Li,Langlang Wei,Jie Su,Zhigang Hu,Ying Wang,Wenrui Hao

Flexible high-frequency vibration sensors are widely used in marine acoustic energy harvesting, implantable medical devices, and underwater ultrasonic communication systems. This paper presents the design of a flexible triboelectroacoustic device. Microstructures on the hydrogel surface are designed to optimize stress distribution within the device. Furthermore, we compare the effect of different glycerin (Gy) ratios in the hydrogel on peak voltage under constant conditions. Experimental results show that the device exhibits optimal output performance with a glycerol content of 28.07 %, accompanied by an ideal Young's modulus. A sample prepared with this formula can reach a voltage of 4.5 V within 10 seconds at a sound pressure of 0.9 MPa. During the exploration of underwater communication potential, ultrasonic devices use "0" and "1" modulation with the ASCII binary table as the encoding strategy for information transmission. The final results show that the demodulated output signal matches the input signal exactly. To further evaluate the performance of the device as an implantable energy harvester, it was implanted into pork tissue at a subcutaneous depth ranging from 1 cm to 4 cm. The results indicate that the device can charge a 470µF capacitor to 0.5 V in 10 seconds. This research offers promising prospects for the development of intelligent and lightweight implantable devices.

A novel injectable sericin hydrogel with strong fluorescence for tracing

Yeshun Zhang,Xinyu Cao,Jingya Zhang,Guozheng Zhang,Mingkun Zhu,Hui Yan,Yurong Li

Hydrogel systems with strong fluorescence, as convenient tracers or bio-probes, have attracted much attention in biomedical engineering. Currently, most hydrogels endowed fluorescent properties due to modifying additional fluorophores. However, these fluorophores owing to photobleaching and toxicity limit the practical applications of hydrogels. Herein, we prepared a novel self-luminescence hydrogel through double crosslinking glutaraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide/horseradish peroxidase (H 2 O 2 /HRP) with sericin protein. The double cross-linked sericin hydrogel exhibits strong green and red intrinsic fluorescence which can be excited over a wide range of wavelengths. Moreover, this hydrogel with strong intrinsic fluorescence could penetrate thick pigskin tissue, which has potential application in implantable bio-tracer areas. In addition to the above unique properties, this sericin hydrogel possesses two types of micropore structures with high porosity, swelling properties, pH-responsive degradability, super elasticity, injectability, viscosity, and excellent biocompatibility. The investigation could significantly expand the scope of protein hydrogels in biomedical applications.

Ultrastretchable Organogel/Silicone Fiber-Helical Sensors for Self-Powered Implantable Ligament Strain Monitoring

Feifan Sheng,Bo Zhang,Yihan Zhang,Yanyan Li,Renwei Cheng,Chuanhui Wei,Chuan Ning,Kai Dong,Zhong Lin Wang

Implantable sensors with the abilities of real-time healthcare monitoring and auxiliary training are important for exercise-induced or disease-induced muscle and ligament injuries. However, some of these implantable sensors have some shortcomings, such as requiring an external power supply or poor flexibility and stability. Herein, an organogel/silicone fiber-helical sensor based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (OFS-TENG) is developed for power-free and sutureable implantation ligament strain monitoring. The OFS-TENG with high stability and ultrastretchability is composed of an organogel fiber and a silicone fiber intertwined with a double helix structure. The organogel fiber possesses the merits of rapid preparation (15 s), good transparency (>95%), high stretchability (600%), and favorable stability (over 6 months). The OFS-TENG is successfully implanted on the patellar ligament of the rabbit knee for the real-time monitoring of knee ligament stretch and muscle stress, which is expected to provide a solution for real-time diagnosis of muscle and ligament injuries. The prepared self-powered OFS-TENG can monitor data on human muscles and ligaments in real-time.

Bioinspired double self-adhesion coating based on dopamine, coating resin and phosphorylcholine for surface lubrication and antifouling functionalization

Qipeng Li,Qiuxiang Yin,Baohong Hou,Ling Zhou

Implanted medical devices that have poor friction property or biofilm formation can limit their service life and cause discomfort in patients. Recently, some zwitterionic coatings have been studied to modify the biomaterials surface for lubricating function, but the grafting methods of coatings are complicated and also seldom take the bacterial antiadhesion property into account at the same time. In our studies, motivated by the properties of nature mussels and human articular, we firstly successfully synthesized double adhesion protection of self-adhesive ternary polymer coating and achieved the excellent lubrication and antifouling functionalization of the medical devices surface. In details, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and the water contact angles could characterize the successful modification on the surface of titanium substrate. Additionally, the tribological tests carried out by atomic force microscope verified the ternary polymer could enhance the lubrication property owing to the hydration lubrication mechanism. Meanwhile, it also possessed the bacterial antiadhesion property for the initial 24 h attributed to the hydration repulsive force. We believe that, as a simple and universal preparation method, the ternary polymer could make a great significance for improving the surface function of biomaterials and alleviating patients’ discomfort.

Biodegradable triboelectric nanogenerator as a implantable power source for embedded medicine devices

Jian Gang,Zhu Shangtao,Yuan Xiao,Fu Shengqiao,Yang Ning,Yan Chao,Wang Xu,Wong Ching-Ping

Implantable medical devices have played an important role in human medicine in recent decades. However, traditional implanted devices require battery replacement and a second surgery for device removal, which can cause pain to the patient. This work presents a biodegradable triboelectric nanogenerator (BI-TENG) made from both natural and synthetic biodegradable materials that is utilized to collect mechanical energy in vivo and transduce it into electricity. Reed film and polylactic acid were chosen among different biodegradable materials as the triboelectric layers due to having the best generator output performance by providing voltages that reached 368 V. The biocompatibility of the friction layer and the device was verified via a blood test. After implantation in mice, the BI-TENG exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 0.176 V and a short-circuit current of 192 nA as generated from body movement. The BI-TENG was connected to an interdigital electrode to generate an electric field, which stimulated the accelerated release of doxorubicin (DOX) from red blood cells in targeted drug delivery systems. After stopping the electric field, the release of DOX normalized, facilitating the precise killing of cancer cells. Our work demonstrates the broad potential of BI-TENGs in the field of cancer treatment.

An Implantable In-Hydrogel Wireless Supercapacitor-Activated Neuron System Enables Bidirectional Modulation

Xiangyu Sheng,Zhijian Du,Zhiyi Gao,Jianxiong Xu,La Li,Guozhen Shen

The bidirectional modulation of cerebral neurons in the brain possesses enhancement and inhibition of neural activity, which is of great interest in the treatment of motor nerve disorders and emotional disorders, and cognitive defects. However, existing approaches usually rely on electrical/electrochemical stimulations, which show low security by implanting metal probes and unidirectional currents with single modulation. Herein, an implantable in-hydrogel wireless supercapacitor-activated neuron system consisting of the coil, diode bridge circuit, in-hydrogel supercapacitor, and stimulation electrodes is fabricated, which provides a bidirectional and adjustable ion diffusion current to safely and effectively excite and inhibit brain neurons. The designed in-hydrogel supercapacitor exhibits a high storage charge ability of ≈90 times larger than the devices without hydrogel encapsulation, owing to the in situ radical addition mechanism. Moreover, the in-hydrogel electrodes are implanted into the thalamus, amygdala, and prefrontal lobes of the brain to evoke the corresponding changes in potential intensity and frequency through the external chargeable coil and diode bridge circuit, which verifies the potential of the multimodule supercapacitor in amelioration and treatment Parkinson's, severe depression, and Alzheimer's disease.

Hybrid-Piezoelectret Based Highly Efficient Ultrasonic Energy Harvester for Implantable Electronics

Xiao Wan,Ping Chen,Zisheng Xu,Xiwei Mo,Hongrun Jin,Wei Yang,Shuixiang Wang,Jiangjiang Duan,Bin Hu,Zhiqiang Luo,Liang Huang,Jun Zhou

Implantable ultrasonic energy harvesters that scavenge wireless mechanic energy from ultrasound own remarkable potential in advanced medical protocols for neuroprosthetics, wireless power, biosensor, etc. The main challenge for this kind of device is to achieve high-efficiency energy conversion in a weak ultrasonic pressure field. Here, a multilayered piezoelectret with strain enhanced piezoelectricity by introducing a parallel-connected air hole array in an interdielectric layer sandwiched between a pair of electrets for an efficient ultrasonic energy harvester is presented. This device delivers a remarkable peak output power around 13.13 mW and short-circuits current around 2.2 mA when implanted into tissues at 5~10 mm under an ultrasonic probe setup at 25 mW cm −2 , which is higher than the required power threshold of bioelectronic devices and current threshold of nerve stimulation. Furthermore, the feasibility of supplying power to implantable bioelectronics and working as neuroproteins for peripheral nerve stimulation are both demonstrated. It is anticipated that this highly efficient, easily fabricated, and biocompatible device will potentially enable applications for multifunctional and advanced implantable bioelectronics in the next generation of diagnosis and therapy.

Implantable heterogeneous triboelectric nanogenerator effectively prevents denervation-induced muscle atrophy

Shuai Zhang,Renjie Tan,Ke Zhang,Shuo Meng,Xiaoyun Xu,Qi Zhang,Chuanwei Zhi,Zhuang Wang,Xinshuo Liang,Shanshan Zhu,Yanlong Tai,Jinlian Hu

Electrical stimulation (ES) is one of the most effective methods of preventing muscle atrophy. However, current electrotherapy equipment is relatively complex and inconvenient to carry, and the daily training time needs to be scheduled. Implantable flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) can realize ES and effectively avoid the above problems. Therefore, we developed a high-performance TENG with excellent biocompatibility and implanted it subcutaneously to prevent denervation-induced muscle atrophy. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) analysis found that the spacing of the heterogeneous film can change its dipole, which is one of the reasons for the voltage change of heterogeneous TENG (h-TENG). In addition, in vitro experiments demonstrate that h-TENG can effectively promote much more muscle cell proliferation. Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis and gene knockout methods found that h-TENG prevents muscle atrophy by upregulating the expression of the FGF6 gene.

An adaptive-conforming biodegradable flexible power supply based on continuous glucose oxidation

Chengcheng Li,Hao Zheng,Xingguo Zhang,Zhihua Pu,Dachao Li

This paper reports an adaptive degradable flexible power supply. The power supply is produced using a batch-printed, easy-to-operate screen-printing technique that converts the chemical energy of glucose and oxygen into electricity. The power supply has stable current and voltage outputs in vitro, delivering a consistent open circuit potential of 0.2 V in vitro. Due to the flexibility and degradability of the power supply, the power supply can be implanted anywhere in the tissue. This breaks through the limitation of location, for example, mechanical energy harvesters can only be implanted in places with frequent movements. And due to the degradable nature of the power supply, surgical resection is avoided. Glucose and oxygen are ubiquitous and abundant in interstitial fluid. The in vivo experimental results prove that the power supply can power the light-emitting diode and have a stable current output. Therefore, the power supply is expected to provide internal power for implantable devices, avoiding transmission from external sources such as radio frequency.
