Core-Shell Graphitic Carbon Nitride/Zinc Phytate as a Novel Efficient Flame Retardant for Fire Safety and Smoke Suppression in Epoxy Resin

Weiwei Zhang,Weihong Wu,Weihua Meng,Weiya Xie,Yumeng Cui,Jianzhong Xu,Hongqiang Qu

Novel core-shell graphitic carbon nitride/zinc phytate (g-C3N4/PAZn) flame retardant was simple synthetized using two-dimensional g-C3N4and bio-based PAZn by self-assembly and incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) for improving the fire safety. The flame retardance and smoke suppression were investigated by cone calorimetry. The results indicated that g-C3N4/PAZn-EP displayed outstanding flame retardancy and smoke suppression, for example, the peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate decreased by 71.38% and 25%, respectively. Furthermore, the flame retardancy mechanism was further explored by char residue and thermal stability analysis. It can be predicted that g-C3N4/PAZn will provide valuable reference about bio-based flame retardant.

Recyclable and Reprocessable Cross-Linked EPDM Rubber by Constructing Ionic Cross-Linked Networks via Bio-Based Zinc Phytate

Zhen Li,Anqi Li,Liang He,Jianbin Min,Shanshan Guan

Endowing rubber with recyclability represents a critical advance for energy conservation. Herein, we report a sustainable and commercially feasible strategy for developing recyclable ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber via exchangeable ionic cross-links. Maleic anhydride (MAH) was grafted onto EPDM to produce EPDM-g-MAH, introducing reactive carboxyl moieties; subsequently, bio-derived zinc phytate (ZnPA) was employed as a green cross-linker to form reversible ionic bonds. After the first recycling cycle, the EPDM-g-MAH@ZnPA rubber retained 96% of its tensile strength and more than 99% of its elongation at break. Even after three recycling cycles, the tensile strength remained at 82%. To balance mechanical performance and recyclability, zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) was incorporated to construct a dual dynamic cross-linking network. The EPDM-g-MAH@ZnPA/ZDMA-50 composite achieved a tensile strength of 5.86 MPa and a tear strength of 34.2 N/mm. After recycling, it retained 96.8% of its tensile strength and 86% of its elongation at break, exhibiting excellent structural stability during repeated processing. This work presents a bio-inspired, sustainable strategy for designing high-performance recyclable rubber materials by integrating bio-based cross-linkers into dynamic network architectures.

Fabrication and performance evaluation of hydrophobic flame-retardant coatings on polyester substrates via phytic acid and siloxane

Wei Li,Tianyu Ruan,Yingting Yin,Jinbo Yao,Xuemin Hu

With the increasing demand for safety and practical performance in textiles, the development of polyester fabrics combining flame retardancy and hydrophobic properties has become an inevitable requirement for industry advancement. This study employed an in-situ cross-linking composite process for dual-functional flame-retardant and hydrophobic coatings. A flame-retardant base coating was constructed on polyester surfaces via blending and crosslinking of phytate‑zinc and siloxane-modified waterborne polyurethane. Subsequently, the flame-retardant layer catalyzed the hydrolysis and condensation of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane on the fabric surface, thereby forming a hydrophobic coating and yielding a polyester material with both hydrophobic and flame-retardant properties. The limiting oxygen index of the modified polyester fabric increased from 19.5 % to 27.2 %. It couldn't be ignited in combustion tests and exhibited no melting droplets. In the cone calorimeter test, the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke release (TSP) decreased by 43 %, 37.8 %, and 35.3 %, respectively. Moreover, the modified polyester fabric exhibited a static water contact angle of up to 149.4°, demonstrating self-cleaning ability, abrasion resistance, and washing durability. This work provides a facile and accessible strategy for the preparation of multifunctional textiles.

Zinc phytate@chitosan bio-powder renders explosion suppression of titanium powder involved in industrial processes

Kainan Yu,YaChao Wang,Shuqi Zhang,JiangPing Zhao

Titanium powder easily accumulates during industrial processes, and its high reactivity poses unavoidable hazards to both industrial operations and human safety. To suppress the explosion of titanium powder, zinc phytate (Zn-PA) and chitosan (CS) are mixed and prepared into a new bio-inhibitor using hydrothermal-solvothermal synthesis. The suppression effects of Zn-PA@CS bio-powder on the explosion pressure and temperature of titanium powder under different inerting ratios (α) are investigated using a 20 L spherical explosion testing system. The results show that when the α of Zn-PA@CS bio-powder is 0.8, the maximum explosion pressure ( P max ) and the maximum rate of pressure rise (( dP / dt ) max ) of titanium powder decrease by 82.8% and 91.2%, respectively. Moreover, the maximum flame temperature ( T p ) drops from the initial 647 °C–38 °C. Combined with TG-DSC analysis, Zn-PA@CS bio-powder produces phosphorus-containing substances during high-temperature thermal decomposition, which consume a large number of free radicals essential for the explosion. Furthermore, Zn-PA@CS bio-powder generates solid and gaseous substances, leading to the formation of a dense carbonaceous residue that covers the titanium powder, acts as an effective barrier, and dilutes oxygen concentration, thereby further inhibiting the explosion reaction. The Zn-PA@CS bio-powder exhibits a synergistic effect in both physical and chemical suppression. This study provides technical support for developing biomass explosion suppression powder and for preventing and controlling explosion accidents in industrial production.

Coatings embedded with composite defective metal organic frameworks having excellent mechanical and anti-corrosion properties

Yue Zhao,Cheng Xu,Jin-Wei Zhang,Zheng-Hui Qiu,Li Wang,Ji-Ming Hu,Cun-Guo Lin

In this work, a versatile strategy of manipulating defective metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with the assistance of the steric hindrance effect was proposed and applied in coatings. The steric hindrance effect was utilized to construct the defective MOFs with phosphate, gluconate and phytate as examples. The defective MOFs were synthesized in an aqueous solution at room temperature, having a promising future for industrial application. Tailoring specific defects in MOFs can make molecular chains of polymer penetrate into the internal skeleton and form an interlocking structure. The interlocking effect can enhance the mechanical performance of the coating, and the corrosion inhibition performance of anions can synergistically improve the corrosion resistance of the coating. The waterborne acrylic resin (WAR) embedded with phytate-modified MOF has the highest tensile strength of 23.9 MPa, four times higher than pure WAR. Anti-corrosion test results indicated that the corrosion inhibition efficiencies of composite coatings maintained around 97% after 2 months of immersion in seawater. The structure-property relations of defect-engineered MOFs and the anti-corrosion mechanisms were elaborated in detail by both experiments and molecular dynamics simulation. This strategy has excellent environmental friendliness, reduces the cost of MOF materials, and has broad application prospects.

Modulating zero charge potential of Zn-doped N, P-containing carbon electrodes for efficient copper ion electrosorption

Yuzudi Tong,Xinhua Huang,Na Liu,Ruikun Zhao,Guangzhi Hu

Nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) doped carbon materials exhibit enhanced electro adsorption capability in capacitive deionization (CDI) applications. However, the incorporation of N/P atoms may introduce electron-withdrawing groups to the electrode surface, impacting the potential of zero charge ( E PZC ) and thereby influencing its electro adsorption efficiency. This research explores the modulation of electrode surface charge by varying the N/P doping composition. Specifically, it presents a Zn and N/P co-doped carbon material employed as the CDI cathode, showcasing selective adsorption of Cu 2+ ions. Under a voltage of 1.2 V, the adsorption capacity achieves 250 mg/g in a 500 mg/L Cu 2+ ion solution. Furthermore, it demonstrates outstanding cycling stability, maintaining an adsorption capacity of 233 mg/g even after 21 cycles. This investigation introduces an innovative approach for E PZC adjustment and offers a fresh theoretical framework for fabricating high-performance CDI electrodes.
