Lateral-Size-Dependent Ion Transport Behavior of the MXene Membrane Facilitates Efficient Ion Sieving

Lingzhi Huang,Shiyun Chen,Li Ding,Haihui Wang

Two-dimensional (2D) nanofluidic channels have shown great potential for efficient ion separation due to the synergy of the charge microenvironment and confined 2D planar channels. However, current 2D channels mainly rely on postdecoration with ion-specific recognition molecules, while the regulation of the membrane structure and the role of the channel itself have been overlooked. Herein, we constructed two types of membranes to demonstrate the critical role of building units in 2D lamellar membranes. By tuning the lateral size of MXene nanosheets, we prepared a large-lateral-sized MXene membrane (LMM)(∼5.47 μm) and a small-lateral-sized MXene membrane (SMM)(∼524 nm) to systematically study the ion transport behavior. The results showed that the LMM exhibited preferential transport of monovalent ions (Li+, Na+, and K+) while impeding permeation of multivalent ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, and Al3+), contributing to the selectivity of Li+/Mg2+ ≈ 12. In contrast, the SMM allowed for the fast transport of all monovalent/divalent ions, leading to poor selectivity (e.g., Li+/Mg2+ ≈ 2.3), which could be attributed to the abundant nonselective defects in the SMM. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the weakest interaction between MXene and Li+ determines the selective transport of Li+ over other ions. This work highlights the importance of building defect-free 2D membranes for ion sieving using nondecorated 2D nanofluidic channels.

How does lateral size influence the tribological behaviors of graphene oxide as nanoadditive for water-based lubrication?

Yanfei Liu,Shengtao Yu,Zhikai Fan,Xiangyu Ge,Wenzhong Wang

Graphene-family materials exhibit excellent tribological behaviors as nanoadditives for eco-friendly water lubrication systems. However, the influence of lateral size, as a basic characteristic of graphene-family materials, on its tribological behaviors as nanoadditives is still unclear. Here, the tribological properties of graphene oxide (GO) nanoadditives with different lateral sizes are systemically investigated. The results show that different lateral sizes lead to different optimal concentrations of GO nanoadditives. Besides the mass ratio of GO nanoflakes, the amount of GO nanoflakes in lubricants is also critical for the tribological behaviors. Moreover, GO nanoflakes with smaller lateral size can more effectively reduce the wear of Si/SiO 2 plates because smaller GO nanoflakes can more easily slip into the sliding interface to form tribofilms on the counterparts. This study provides fundamental insights into the size effect of graphene-family nanoadditives for water-based lubricants.

Linear relationship between lateral size of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and water vapor barrier property in RGO/PEI composite membrane

Qing Zeng,Chongshan Yin,Xi Li,Chunqing He

The wide distribution of the lateral size of lab-prepared graphene oxide (GO) sheets often complicates the measurement of accurate average size. Herein, a series of reduced-GO/polyethyleneimine (RGO/PEI) composite membranes with compact brick-wall structures were successfully prepared. The large lateral size of RGO sheets in the membrane benefited gas barrier properties, including oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor. The RGO sheets acted as impermeable inorganic filler to prolong the diffusion path, forcing gas molecules to wiggle through the permeable and tortuous channels of the PEI/water mixture. The water vapor transmission rate of RGO/PEI composite membranes was relatively high, and a linear correlation was established between the length of PEI/water channels and the water vapor barrier property. The length of PEI/water channels under the same membrane thickness was determined by the lateral size of RGO sheets. Therefore, the statistic averages of lateral size of RGO sheets (from 2 . 48 μ m to 44 . 35 μ m ) showed a linear correlation with the water vapor barrier property, as confirmed by the positron annihilation technique and molecular dynamics simulations. In sum, the linear correlation could be used to practicably measure the statistic averages of lateral size of GO sheets according to water vapor permeability measurements.

Renal clearance of graphene oxide: glomerular filtration or tubular secretion and selective kidney injury association with its lateral dimension

Chen Wei,Wang Bing,Liang Shanshan,Wang Meng,Zheng Lingna,Xu Si,Wang Jiali,Fang Hao,Yang Pu,Feng Weiyue

Background Renal excretion is one of the major routes of nanomaterial elimination from the body. Many previous studies have found that graphene oxide nanosheets are excreted in bulk through the kidneys. However, how the lateral size affects GO disposition in the kidneys including glomerular filtration, active tubular secretion and tubular reabsorption is still unknown. Results The thin, two-dimensional graphene oxide nanosheets (GOs) was observed to excrete in urine through the kidneys, but the lateral dimension of GOs affects their renal clearance pathway and renal injury. The s-GOs could be renal excreted via the glomerular filtration, while the l-GOs were predominately excreted via proximal tubular secretion at a much faster renal clearance rate than the s-GOs. For the tubular secretion of l-GOs, the mRNA level of basolateral organic anion transporters Oat1 and Oat2 in the kidney presented dose dependent increase, while no obvious alterations of the efflux transporters such as Mdr1 and Mrp4 mRNA expression levels were observed, suggesting the accumulation of l-GOs. During the GO renal elimination, mostly the high dose of 15 mg/kg s-GO and l-GO treatment showed obvious kidney injuries but at different renal compartment, i.e., the s-GOs induced obvious glomerular changes in podocytes, while the l-GOs induced more obvious tubular injuries including necrosis of renal tubular epithelial cells, loss of brush border, cast formation and tubular dilatation. The specifically tubular injury biomarkers KIM1 and NGAL were shown slight increase with mRNA levels in l-GO administrated mice. Conclusion sThis study shows that the lateral size of GOs affected their interactions with different renal compartments, renal excretion pathways and potential kidney injuries.

Quantitative analysis and kinetic modeling of ultrasound-assisted exfoliation and breakage process of graphite oxide

Chang Li,Jie Lin,Liming Shen,Ningzhong Bao

Ultrasonic exfoliation is the most widely used delamination technique for producing graphene oxide. In this work, the exfoliation of graphite oxide suspension is conveniently monitored via real-time measurement of viscosity and then quantitatively described by using the relative single-layer fraction ( α ) for the first time, by which the full exfoliation is achieved with a time scale of minutes. Lateral size evolution is demonstrated using lognormal distribution based on statistical analysis. With the quantization of relative single-layer fraction and lateral size distribution, a prototype database has been built to efficiently integrate experimental data tested under different process conditions (suspension concentration, ultrasonic frequency, and ultrasonic power density), which can be used as reference guides for process optimization and product control. The selection and breakage functions ( S i and B ij ) of ultrasound-assisted exfoliation are calculated and the breakage mechanisms of graphite oxide are found attributed mainly to sheet fracture.

Lateral Size Scaling Effect during Discontinuous Dewetting

Yinyin Lin,Zhongsheng Wu,Mengying Zhang,Jinbo Wu,Weijia Wen

Discontinuous dewetting on a prepatterned surface with regions of different dewettability is an attractive way to assemble a material into 2D microstructures with a predefined lateral size and spatial distribution on a surface. However, few studies have examined the aspect ratio or contact angles of the microstructures. In this Communication, it is found that the static contact angle changes with the lateral size of droplets and variation relationship between them shows two phases: an exponential decrease phase when lateral size is <80 µm, and a minimum plateau phase when lateral size is >80 µm, which is defined as lateral size scaling effect. After dynamically studying the droplet generation, it is proposed that liquid retraction after liquid thin film ruptures is responsible for the lateral size scaling effect. The effect of liquid viscosity and sliding speed on the lateral size scaling effect is also assessed and the lateral size scaling effect in droplet evaporation models is investigated. Finally, differently oriented single metal-organic framework crystal arrays based on the lateral size scaling effect are successfully fabricated. This work demonstrates a novel 2.5D top-down strategy to guide bottom-up assembly.

Influences of Lateral Size on the Properties of Graphene Based Materials and Poly(vinylbutyral)/Graphene Composite Materials

Yu Chenggong,Zhu Ting,Zhang Xingxiang,Liu Haihui

Graphene films with different lateral sizes and poly(vinylbutyral) (PVB)/graphene composites were fabricated. The morphological structural and mechanical properties were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), four-probe conductivity measurements and tensile strength testing (TST). The results show that, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with different lateral sizes were fabricated successfully. As the lateral size of the GO decreased, the tensile strength and modulus of GO films was improved; however, the tensile modulus of the film fabricated with nanoscale GO film decreased. RGO samples with a large area and those that are nanosized exhibited high electrical conductivities of 867 S/m and 927 S/m, respectively. The tensile strength and modulus of the PVB/GO and PVB/RGO composites increased at low filler contents, exhibiting a maximum at 0.1 wt%. The tensile strength increased by 31% and 29%, and the tensile modulus increased by 20% and 24%, respectively, for the composites fabricated with the smallest GO and RGO. In contrast, the elongation at break of the PVB/graphene composite materials decreased.

Solvothermal Preparation of Crystal Seeds and Anisotropy-Controlled Growth of Silver Nanoplates

Zhenbin Zhang,Tanlong Xue,Mingli Qin,Yanzhao Wang,Qi Shi,Lulu Wang,Yanhong Zhao,Zhimin Yang

We synthesized silver nanoplates using the solvothermal method and, for the first time, placed them as crystal seeds in a water-based growth solution, thereby successfully achieving the large-scale production of silver nanoplates. The synthesis method enabled independent control of the lateral size and vertical size of the silver nanoplates. More specifically, the lateral size could be adjusted within the range of 565 nm–1.682 μm, while the vertical size was achieved by introducing Cl– as a capping agent and the vertical size was thickened from 18.28 to 40.41 nm.

Effect of different lateral dimension graphene oxide sheets on the interface of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites

Baowei Qiu,Tong Sun,Mushan Yuan,Haoruo Zhang,Yang Chen,Shengtai Zhou,Zhengguang Heng,Mei Liang,Huawei Zou

The interfacial performance is one of the most important factors that determine the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). Recently, improving the interfacial properties of CFRPs using graphene oxide (GO) has received intensive attention from researchers. Using GO can effectively improve the interfacial properties of CFRPs, however, the effect of the size of GO on the properties of CFRPs remains unclear. In this study, GO sheets with different lateral dimensions are selected to elucidate the aforementioned issue. Results showed that GO sheets with smaller lateral dimensions are more advantageous to enhance the interfacial properties of CFRPs. The presence of a larger number of functional groups and higher roughness on the surface of CFs that modified by smaller GO sheets is believed to be contributing factor, as evidenced by XPS and AFM . Furthermore, higher surface energy is detected on the surface of smaller GO sheets modified CFs which is likely related to the size effect of nano-scale GO. The above suggests that nano-scale GO can significantly enhance the chemical bonding and mechanical interlocking of matrix-fiber interface. The proposed approach can be easily implemented which does not deteriorate the strength of CFs. This work provides an effective way to improve the interface properties of CFRPs using GO sheets with smaller lateral dimensions.
