Chitosan (CTS) exhibits notable moisturizing and film-forming capabilities, whereas nano selenium (SeNPs) demonstrates antioxidant and antibacterial properties. In the present study, a CTS/Se film-forming agent was prepared by dissolving CTS, glycerol, and SeNPs in 1% (v/v) glacial acetic acid through heating and ultrasonic treatment. The results revealed that SeNPs fused with CTS via intermolecular forces, thereby enhancing the tensile strength of the CTS film. The water contact angle of the CTS film increased with an increase in SeNPs concentration. The thermal stability and water retention properties of CTS/Se were superior than CTS. In a storage experiment, the content of soluble solids in tomatoes coated with CTS/Se was higher than that in tomatoes coated with CTS and the control. The CTS/Se coating inhibited gas exchange both inside and outside the film, leading to increased activities of antioxidant enzymes. This reduced the oxidation of vitamin C in the tomatoes and decreased the content of malondialdehyde. The CTS/Se film inhibited the growth of bacteria on the tomato surface and mitigated the decline of aldehyde, alcohol and ketone aroma compounds. Consequently, the CTS/Se coating alleviated the softening, aging and rotting of tomatoes. Feeding experiments conducted on mice verified the food safety of the CTS/Se.

Depression is a complex and prevalent mental illness. Cherry leaf is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, which has confirmed to exert a certain antidepressant effect, but its potential neural regulation mechanism is not clear. This paper aims to investigate the improved action of cherry leaf decoction (CLD) on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rats and its potential neural regulation mechanism by verifying the role and function of NMDAR regulatory target α2δ-1 in depression due to CUMS. Male SD rats were subjected to random stressors persisting for 5 weeks to establish the CUMS depression rat model. CLD could effectively alleviate depression-like behaviors of CUMS rats in behavioral tests including sucrose preference test, forced swimming test, tail suspension test and open field test. After the administration of the CLD, the expression of corticotropic-releasing hormone (CRH) in the hypothalamus was inhibited. Moreover, the levels of CRH, adrenal cortical hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (CORT) in serum also decreased significantly. CUMS upregulated the expressions of α2δ-1, N-methyl- d -aspartate receptor 1 (NR1), NR2A and NR2B, and enhanced the binding ability to of α2δ-1 and NR1, which were reversed by CLD. The results demonstrated that CLD could ameliorate depression-like behaviors due to CUMS, which was related to the fact that CLD down-regulated α2δ-1 level and interfered with α2δ-1 binding to NR1, thereby reducing NMDAR expression and ultimately inhibiting HPA axis activity.

To extend the shelf-life of cherry tomatoes infected with Botrytis cinerea , this study analyzed the effect of Pichia membranifaciens (PM) on a composite film of gelatin (Gel) and trehalose (Tre), and explored the effect of different concentrations of trehalose on the yeast in the bioactive film and its control effect on cherry tomatoes. Scanning electron microscopy showed that Tre/Gel-based film can be applied as effective carriers to protect the cellular integrity of PM. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and tests of mechanical properties showed that there was interaction between PM and the Tre/Gel base film, which maintained the thermal stability of the base film. The addition of PM reduced the water vapor permeability, hygroscopicity, and moisture content of the Tre/Gel base film, effectively extending the active film's storage time. This study also explored the growth curve of PM and found that 15% trehalose was effective in maintaining PM activity and could result in a 30-day survival rate of 62% for PM in Tre/Gel films, with 72.41% inhibition of B. cinerea . Finally, the PM/Tre/Gel film significantly reduced the incidence of decay in cherry tomatoes and improved the storage quality and fungal resistance of the fruit. Thus, PM/Tre/Gel films may be applied as a new antifungal packaging material for the preservation of fresh fruit.

Natural photosensitizers offer promising and sustainable solutions to the challenges of food preservation. This study investigates the potential of chlorogenic acid (CA), a naturally occurring phenolic compound with dual photoactive and antimicrobial properties. Under Xenon lamp irradiation (100 mW/cm 2 ), CA at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL demonstrated significant antimicrobial efficacy against both Staphylococcus aureus (10 6 CFU/mL) and Escherichia coli (10 5 CFU/mL). To enhance the practical applicability of CA for cherry preservation, CA was incorporated into agar (AG) films, which exhibited superior physicochemical and mechanical properties, including increased tensile strength and improved gas permeability. Implementation of CA-AG films prolonged the storage duration of cherries by 9 days through effective quality retention and suppression of microbial contamination. This research highlights the potential of CA as an environmentally friendly and functional solution for advanced food preservation technologies.

This work aims to develop degradable packaging films based on chitosan (CS) and Na-montmorillonite (MMT). The effect of citric acid (CA) on the properties of prepared films (MCS/CAs) was also investigated. MMT shows excellent compatibility in CS. Results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , scanning electron microscopy , and thermogravimetric analysis indicated an improvement in the structural and thermal properties of the films after incorporating MMT into the CS matrix. Despite the reduced tensile strength , the composite films with CA loaded exhibited better swelling resistance and higher elongation at break (68%). MCS/CA-c (loaded with 80% CA) was employed to package cherry tomatoes so as to improve its conservation. Results showed improved physical/chemical properties (weight loss ratio, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and ascorbic acid) of wrapped cherry tomatoes. Therefore, results reveal the potential of MCS/CAs films as degradable packaging material .

The effects of edible coatings based on sodium alginate with ʻBaozhuʼ pear chitinase on the quality of cherry tomatoes during refrigerated storage were evaluated. Cherry tomatoes inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum were coated and stored up to 21 days. All coatings with the chitinase significantly reduced F . oxysporum proliferation on cherry tomatoes during storage and extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes effectively ( p < .05). Results showed that alginate coatings with the chitinase could prevent weight loss, maintain firmness, and slow down the changes of titratable acidity and vitamin C ( p < .05) in a dose-dependent manner. However, no significant differences were observed between T3 (1% alginate/0.15% ʻBaozhuʼ pear chitinase/1% glycerin) and T4 (1% sodium alginate/0.3% ʻBaozhuʼ pear chitinase/1% glycerin) ( p > .05). Overall, alginate coating with 0.15% ʻBaozhuʼ pear chitinase could be a promising method to maintain the quality of cherry tomatoes.

Although imidacloprid is widely used and registered for radish cultivation in China, its metabolic fate in radish remains unclear, posing uncertainties in consumer safety. Herein, we employed 14 C-imidacloprid to elucidate its distribution and metabolism in cherry radish. Residue analysis showed higher accumulation in shoots (1.15–1.32 μmol) than roots (0.0210–0.0678 μmol). Imidacloprid in radish dissipated following first-order kinetics, with a half-life of 18.5 d. Parental imidacloprid was confirmed in roots, while four metabolites, predominantly olefin and 4/5-hydroxy imidacloprid, were identified in shoots. The proposed pathway involves hydrolysis of the imidazole ring to form hydroxyl derivatives, followed by dehydration to olefin products. Notably, dietary risk assessment revealed risk quotient values up to 20 % in some individuals consuming radish leaves, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring. Overall, these findings fill the knowledge gap regarding imidacloprid metabolism in radishes and offer vital insights into optimizing pesticide usage while maintaining food safety.

The growth and development of cold-season plants are susceptible to high temperature. Melatonin is a plant growth regulator with potential to improve plant tolerance to biological and abiotic stresses. In our study, cherry radish ( Raphanus sativus L. var. radculus pers ) was cultured at a high temperature (35 °C/30 °C day/night) and different concentrations (0, 11.6, 17.4, 29.0, 34.8 and 67.0 mg L −1 ) of melatonin were applied to these high-temperature stressed plants to its effects on biomass, quality, antioxidant enzyme activity, chlorophyll and endogenous hormone contents. The plants were grown under normal temperature (25 °C/20 °C) as control and high-temperature condition as HT-stress treatment. The results revealed that under high temperature with 29.0 mg L −1 melatonin treatment, cherry radish biomass was significantly increased by 12.9%, and the soluble protein and soluble solid were increased by 18.7 and 9.2%, respectively. The activity of antioxidant enzyme, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase were increased by 43.7 and 45.5%, respectively. The chlorophyll a and carotenoid contents were increased by 7.4 and 20.0% compared with the control at 27 days. The auxin and abscisic acid contents were significantly increased by 28.5 and 6.7% compared with HT at 9 days. Thus, application of optimal rate of melatonin had a positive effect on cherry radish growth under high-temperature stress.

Croplands have become a hotspot for antibiotic and microplastic (MP) pollution. However, little is known regarding their combined effects on crops. In this study, the individual and combined effects of oxytetracycline (OTC) and three MPs (i.e., polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), and polyvinylchloride (PVC)) on cherry radish were investigated using pot experiments. Individually, OTC (50 mg kg −1 ), PA (2%, w/w), and PP (2%, w/w) induced negligible effects on cherry radish biomass and the root/shoot ratio. However, PVC (2%, w/w) significantly inhibited cherry radish growth; that is, its shoot and root fresh weight decreased by 46.2% and 81.1%, respectively. In the combined exposure groups, OTC alleviated the adverse effects of PVC on the cherry radish leaf number and shoot fresh weight. This was linked to that OTC increased the content of photosynthetic pigments . Superoxide dismutase activity in cherry radish roots was inhibited to different extents in all treatment groups except for the PA and PVC treatments. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content in cherry radish roots increased in all treatment groups, suggesting that both OTC and MPs caused oxidative damage to cherry radish root cells, therefore inhibiting cherry radish root growth. However, the presence of OTC non-significantly changed the effects of MPs on cherry radish roots. Irrespective of OTC presence, MPs induced a reduction in the root/shoot ratio of cherry radish, suggesting that the inhibitory effect of MPs on cherry radish roots was stronger than that on shoots. These findings contribute to the evaluation of the phytotoxicity of antibiotics and MPs in soil-vegetable systems.

The use of renewable bioresources and their nanoforms in developing edible coating materials is considered a promising approach for preserving food freshness. Herein, cellulose nanofibers (CNF) with different morphologies were combined with gelatin to prepare composite preservation film following by brushing over the surface of cherry tomatoes as an edible coating. The gelatin-based composite film containing 0.3 % CNF20 (GC2–0.3) exhibited the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP, 1.97 × 10 −4 barrer), lower oxygen permeability (OP, 2.54 × 10 −2 barrer), higher transparency (Tr = 85.28 %) and excellent mechanical properties (σ = 47.45 MPa, E = 1.84 GPa). When coated on cherry tomatoes, it maintained good luster and freshness, significantly reducing the water loss of cherry tomatoes. The weight loss was only 16 % after 14 days of storage at 25 °C and 30 % humidity, compared to >30 % for the uncoated cherry tomatoes. This work provides a viable strategy for developing sustainable, green fresh-keeping materials that can prolong the storage time of the putrescible food.

Gray mold caused byBotrytis cinereais a common postharvest fungal disease in fruit and vegetables. The prevention and treatment of postharvest gray mold has been one of the hot research issues addressed by researchers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of L-methionine and L-arginine onBotrytis cinereain vitro and on cherry tomato fruit. The results of the in vitro experiment showed that L-methionine and L-arginine had significant inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth and spore germination ofBotrytis cinerea, and the inhibitory effects were enhanced with increasing L-methionine or L-arginine concentration. In addition, L-methionine and L-arginine treatment increased the leakage ofBotrytis cinereaelectrolytes, proteins and nucleic acids. The experiment involving propidium iodide staining and malondialdehyde content assay also confirmed that L-methionine and L-arginine treatment could lead to cell membrane rupture and lipid peroxidation. The results of scanning electron microscopy further verified that the morphology of hyphae was damaged, deformed, dented and wrinkled after treatment with L-methionine or L-arginine. Fruit inoculation experiments displayed that L-methionine and L-arginine treatments significantly inhibited the occurrence and development of gray mold in postharvest cherry tomato. Therefore, treatment with L-methionine or L-arginine might be an effective means to control postharvest gray mold in fruit and vegetables.
