The degradation of Orange G (OG) by persulfate (PS, S 2 O 8
2− ) activated with dual catalysts that combined zero-valent iron (ZVI) and copper oxide (CuO) was investigated through batch experiments. Effects of pH, initial OG concentration, persulfate dosages, and dosages of dual catalysts on OG degradation were also examined. Higher persulfate concentration and catalysts dosages resulted in higher OG degrading rates. The OG degradation was higher under acidic conditions (pH 3.0 and 5.0) when compared to alkaline conditions. The constituents and the morphology of the catalysts coating before and after reaction were also investigated with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Radical mechanism was studied and three radical scavengers [methanol (MA), tert-butanol (TBA), phenol] were used to determine the type of major active species taking part in the degradation of OG. It was assumed that the \({\text{SO}}_{4}^{ \cdot - }\) or \({\text{HO}} \cdot\) played a major role in the OG degradation. In conclusion, the ZVI/CuO/PS system is a good candidate for use in detoxifying water contaminants.

Here in, a special catalytic system of potassium persulfate (K 2 S 2 O 8 , PS) activated by Bi 2 MoO 6 –CuS composite was established for the orange II (OII) degradation under visible light. The Bi 2 MoO 6 –CuS composite was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal and solvothermal methods. The structure, morphology, light absorption and photocatalytic properties of the composite were respectively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS). The removal efficiency of OII degradation in the Bi 2 MoO 6 –CuS/PS/vis system reached to 98% within 80 min, which was much higher than that of either Bi 2 MoO 6 or CuS alone. A feasible mechanism analysis of OII degradation was proposed and validated by simple classical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The high removal efficiency by the nanocomposite could be attributed to highly active species of O 2 ·- , ·OH and SO 4 •− radicals in the Bi 2 MoO 6 –CuS photocatalytic oxidation system. Moreover, the composite material retained its activation performance even after 5 degradation cycles, which suggested its high stability.

MIL-88A was synthesized in diverse preparation conditions and characterized by various techniques. The catalytic performance of MIL-88A series for degrading Orange gelb (OG) through persulfate activation were also tested at temperature of 25 °C and the results were shown in the following sequence: 85 °C/2 h > 65 °C/2 h > 105 °C/2 h > 65 °C/6 h > 65 °C/12 h. MIL-88A produced at the synthesis temperature of 85 °C and in the crystallization time of 2 h (85 °C/2 h) was the best one with a removal rate of 96.4% mainly due to high SBET and much greater leach-out of Fe. An optimal dosage (0.3 g L−1) for MIL-88A in the MIL-88A/PS/OG system exists because of inhibition and promotion by fumaric acid. The filtrate experiment indicated that the catalytic activation involved heterogeneous reactions on the surface of the catalyst and homogeneous reactions in solutions. But the heterogeneous reaction occupied the principal position and the probable mechanism was obtained. Moreover, only solution pH < 4 could show a high degradation effect without the help of temperature. Comparing two different methods in the recycling experiment, the removal rate of OG decreased after the fourth run in both. Loss of active catalytic sites for Fe(III) in MIL-88A in the process of separating and sampling was responsible for activity decay.

In this study, FeMoO 4 was applied to activate persulfate (PS, S 2 O 8 2− ) for azo dye Orange G (OG) degradation. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. FeMoO 4 showed excellent efficiency in activating PS for OG removal. More than 95% could be removed after 40 min under reaction conditions of 4 mM PS, 0.3 g L −1 FeMoO 4 and 0.2 mM OG. The effect of different parameters (PS doses, FeMoO 4 doses and pH) were evaluated. The results showed that acid condition provided higher efficiency and overdosing FeMoO 4 and PS presented a scavenging effect. Major intermediates were identified and possible degradation pathway was proposed. Recycle tests presented that FeMoO 4 had excellent recyclable stability in activating PS for OG removal. Sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals all occurred in the oxidation reactions and the former came first. The oxidation reaction was involved in the translation of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ occurred on the surface layer. This study revealed that the FeMoO 4 /PS system is a very promising method for degrading organic contaminants in the environment.

Ni, Ce, and Ta modified Ti/SnO 2 –Sb 2 O 5 –RuO 2 anodes were first prepared by thermal decomposition strategy and applied for Orange G degradation to explore the effect of Ni, Ce, and Ta modification on electrocatalytic property. The Ta modified anode showed the highest ·OH generation capability and the lowest charge transfer resistance among all samples, conducive to electrocatalytic degradation of Orange G. Besides, the Ta modified anode shows more cracks than Ni and Ce modified anodes, which is expected to create more specific surface areas and more exposed active sites for Orange G degradation. The degradation efficiency and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate increased in the order Ru < Ru–Ni < Ru–Ce < Ru–Ta, with Ru–Ta showing the highest degradation efficiency of 98.6% and 44.2%, much higher than 79.6% and 27.5% of Ru, respectively.

Highly ordered mesoporous MnFe 2 O 4 was fabricated via the nanocasting strategy and innovatively used to activate peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of Orange II in water. The effects of several key parameters including catalyst dosage, peroxymonosulfate concentration, temperature and initial pH on the degradation performance were investigated. Results showed that the catalytic activity of ordered mesoporous MnFe 2 O 4 was far superior than that of spinel MnFe 2 O 4 , which can be attributed to its unique structural characteristics. Data fitting showed that the Orange II degradation could be described by the pseudo-first-order kinetics under all conditions tested in this study. Ordered mesoporous MnFe 2 O 4 presented stable and excellent catalytic activity in wide pH range of 5–9. Both the increase of catalyst dosage and temperature favored the enhancement in catalytic efficiency. However, the Orange II degradation tended to have a decline trend after an initial ascent as the peroxymonosulfate concentration increased. Moreover, ordered mesoporous MnFe 2 O 4 was reusable over five consecutive cycles and negligible leaching of metal ions was observed during catalytic reaction. The balance among Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ , Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and peroxymonosulfate decomposed in solution was considered as the proposed activation mechanism, and the generation of sulfate radicals played the dominant role in the Orange II degradation.

In this work, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) Fe 3 O 4 /CeO 2 were firstly synthesized using three different preparation methods, including coprecipitation, impregnation oxidation-precipitation and impregnation reduction-precipitation, respectively. The catalytic activities of Fe 3 O 4 /CeO 2 MNPs, prepared by above three methods, were compared systematically in terms of the degradation of orange G (OG). The impregnation oxidation-precipitation process was economical and maneuverable due to the usage of air, no need of nitrogen protection and higher utilization efficiency of iron. Response surface methodology based on central composite design were used to investigate the individual and interactive effects of three process parameters on the OG degradation, i.e. the initial pH of the solution, the dosage of H 2 O 2 and the initial concentration of OG. Under the optimal conditions of pH 2.5, H 2 O 2 30 mM, OG 50 mg L −1 , catalyst 2.0 g L −1 and 35 °C, the degradation percentage of OG was 98.2% within 120 min, which agreed well with the modeling prediction (R 2 = 0.9984, and Adj-R 2 = 0.9969). And the degradation reaction well followed the first-order kinetic with R 2 = 0.9969. The Fe 3 O 4 /CeO 2 -OX MNPs showed high catalytic activity, stability and reusability in the degradation of OG.

An increasing amount of sewage sludge is produced by wastewater treatment plants worldwide. Therefore, the disposal of sewage sludge is one of the vital environmental issues currently. In the present work, we developed an alternative strategy of converting sewage sludge into porous activated carbon (SAC), and then synthesized a magnetically separable MnFe 2 O 4 -SAC heterogeneous catalyst through an environmentally friendly method. Several characterization techniques such as XRD, FTIR, SEM and XPS indicated the evidence of MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles successfully sticking to surface of porous SAC. The MnFe 2 O 4 -SAC composites exhibited stable and excellent catalytic activity in activating persulfate (PS) for the degradation of Orange G (OG) throughout the wide pH range of 3–9, and could be recycled by a magnet without any loss. The activation energy was calculated to be 14.94 kJ mol −1 , indicating that the OG degradation in MnFe 2 O 4 -SAC/PS process required moderate activation energy. The results of heavy metals leaching experiments revealed an excellent stability of the MnFe 2 O 4 -SAC catalyst. Possible reaction mechanism in MnFe 2 O 4 -SAC/PS system was also discussed in detail.

Wastewater containing an azo dye Orange G (OG) causes massive environmental pollution , thus it is critical to develop a highly effective, environmental-friendly, and reusable catalyst in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for OG degradation. In this work, we successfully applied a magnetic MnFe 2 O 4 /α-MnO 2 hybrid fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method for OG removal in water. The characteristics of the hybrid were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method, vibrating sample magnetometry, electron paramagnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effects of operational parameters (i.e., catalytic system, catalytic dose, solution pH, and temperature) were investigated. The results exhibited that 96.8% of OG degradation was obtained with MnFe 2 O 4 /α-MnO 2 (1:9)/PMS system in 30 min regardless of solution pH changes. Furthermore, the possible reaction mechanism of the coupling system was proposed, and the degradation intermediates of OG were identified by mass spectroscopy . The radical quenching experiments and EPR tests demonstrated that SO 4 • ̶ , O 2 • ̶ , and 1 O 2 were the primary reactive oxygen species responsible for the OG degradation. The hybrid also displayed unusual stability with less than 30% loss in the OG removal after four sequential cycles. Overall, magnetic MnFe 2 O 4 /α-MnO 2 hybrid could be used as a high potential activator of PMS to remove orange G and maybe other dyes from wastewater.
