Protein-Inspired Self-Healable Ti3C2 MXenes/Rubber-Based Supramolecular Elastomer for Intelligent Sensing

Quanquan Guo,Xinxing Zhang,Fengyuan Zhao,Quancheng Song,Gehong Su,Yuxiang Tan,Qingchuan Tao,Tao Zhou,Yanmei Yu,Zehang Zhou,Canhui Lu

Progress toward the integration of electronic sensors with a signal processing system is important for artificial intelligent and smart robotics. It demands mechanically robust, highly sensitive, and self-healable sensing materials which could generate discernible electric variations responding to external stimuli. Here, inspired by the supramolecular interactions of amino acid residues in proteins, we report a self-healable nanostructured Ti3C2MXenes/rubber-based supramolecular elastomer (NMSE) for intelligent sensing. MXene nanoflakes modified with serine through an esterification reaction assemble with an elastomer matrix, constructing delicate dynamic supramolecular hydrogen bonding interfaces. NMSE features desirable recovered toughness (12.34 MJ/m3) and excellent self-healing performance (∼100%) at room temperature. The NMSE-based sensor with high gauge factor (107.43), low strain detection limit (0.1%), and fast responding time (50 ms) can precisely detect subtle human motions (including speech, facial expression, pulse, and heartbeat) and moisture variations even after cut/healing processes. Moreover, NMSE-based sensors integrated with a complete signal process system show great feasibility for speech-controlled motions, which demonstrates promising potential in future wearable electronics and soft intelligent robotics.

Surface Coating of Aramid Fiber by a Graphene/Aramid Nanofiber Hybrid Material to Enhance Interfacial Adhesion with Rubber Matrix

Bo Zhang,Tianze Lian,Xiaoming Shao,Ming Tian,Nanying Ning,Liqun Zhang,Wencai Wang

A novel method of constructing nanostructures on the surface of aramid fiber (AF) was demonstrated in this article. Through the π–π* interaction between the aramid nanofiber (ANF) and graphene (G), the G/ANF dispersion stably existed in water. In an alkaline solution of tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), a TA/PEI (TP) layer was deposited on the surface of AF to introduce functional groups. Then, the modified AF was impregnated with the G/ANF dispersion to construct surface nanostructures to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and rubber. The results showed that the H pull-out force of the AF and rubber after impregnating with G, ANF, and G/ANF was increased by 15.3, 21.5, and 84.7%, respectively, compared with the untreated AF. The Raman spectroscopy and SEM results show that there is a π–π* interaction between G and ANF, and the ANFs are firmly attached to the surface of G. The hybrid G/ANF nanofiller can form 3D nanostructures on the surface of AF to improve the mechanical interlocking and stress transfer between the fiber and the rubber matrix, thereby achieving excellent interfacial adhesion while maintaining the excellent mechanical properties of AF.

Combined treatments of fiber surface etching/silane-coupling for enhanced mechanical strength of aramid fiber-reinforced rubber blends

Guangyi Lin,Hong Wang,Boquan Yu,Guangkai Qu,Shaowei Chen,Tairong Kuang,Kaiben Yu,Zhenning Liang

This study sought to improve the interfacial bonding force between aramid fiber (AF) and a rubber matrix. We pretreated the aramid fiber with anhydrous calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions. We then performed a separate modification using two different methods, first, grafting the aramid fiber with silane coupling agent γ-Methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (KH570) and secondly in situ formation of silica on the surface of aramid fiber. In addition, mechanical blending was adopted to prepare natural rubber/ cis -1,4-polybutadiene rubber/aramid fiber (NR/BR/AF) composites. Finally, aramid fibers were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), then the mechanical properties of the corresponding composites analyzed. Results revealed that the synergistic action of anhydrous CaCl 2 and NaOH solutions caused an increase in surface roughness and the contact area of the aramid fiber. The Sol-gel method allowed successful coating of the secondary modified aramid fiber surface with a layer of in situ -generated silica. Consequently, this improved surface reactivity of the fiber and the rubber matrix, thus promoting their combination. Moreover, we successfully grafted KH570 onto the surface of the aramid fiber through an oxygen-containing group on the surface of the pretreated aramid fiber. Tensile properties of AF composites exhibited a 31.9% increase after secondary modification with KH570 whereas their DIN abrasion performance increased by 16.2%. Notably, a significant improvement in interfacial adhesion was recorded in modified AF prepared NR/BR composites, which further improved the mechanical properties of NR/BR composites.

Revealing the three-dimensional filler structure in a rubber matrix based on fluorescein modified layered double hydroxides

Weiyang Lv,Miao Du,Jianliang Xiao,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

To gain insight into nonlinear viscoelastic behavior, e.g. the Payne effect, and in situ visualize the filler structure in a rubber matrix under strain, a methodology was developed to detect and track structural evolution based on fluorescent labeling. As a model system, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with different lateral sizes (nanosheets and microsheets) were labeled with fluorescein (FLU) and then uniformly introduced into the rubber matrix through solution blending. The strain-induced deformation and destruction of the three-dimensional LDH filler structure were directly observed for the first time through laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). The contributions of the breakdown of the filler network, strain softening of the glassy layer and macromolecular disentanglement to the Payne effect were qualitatively determined and analyzed in detail based on the structural information probed via LSCM together with transmission electron microscopy, rheometry and modulated differential scanning calorimetry. The primary mechanism for the Payne effect in this system was then proposed and the macromolecular disentanglement in the rubber matrix played a key role. Furthermore, the enhanced Payne effect with increasing LDH content was ascribed to the strain amplification effect induced by the filler network for the LDH nanosheet filled system and the chain sliding on orientated LDHs for microsheet filled compounds, respectively.

Study on interfacial adhesion of the aramid fibers/rubber matrix by grafting mercapto hyperbranched polysiloxane

Xuan Yang,Qunzhang Tu,Xinmin Shen,Chengming Jiang,Ming Pan,Pengxiao Zhu,Yi Li,Caibing Hu,Qiong Zhang

In order to improve the interfacial adhesion between aramid fiber (AF) and rubber matrix, the mercapto hyperbranched polysiloxane (HPSi) was grafted onto the AFs via a novel in-situ growth strategy, which combines the formation of polydopamine (PDA) precursor layer and the co-dehydration condensation between (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane. Based on the results of characterizations including morphology observations and chemical structure analyses, the growth process of mercapto HPSi with the reaction time was investigated and discussed. The pull-out force tests of AFs/rubber composites, which were carried out by universal testing machine, showed that the modification strategy proposed in this study could increase the interfacial adhesion up to approximately 96.5%, and the key factor could be inferred to be the covalent interaction between mercapto groups and double bonds. It is also worth mentioning that the phenomenon of excessive surface modification will occur with the overlong growth time, which would result in the reduction of the interfacial adhesion.

Plasma-assisted surface functionalization of UHMWPE fiber for adhesion improvement with rubber matrix

Lijie Yin,Jianjun Yang,Xiaoming Shao,Ming Tian,Nanying Ning,Wencai Wang

A plasma-assisted surface modification method was introduced to enhance the interfacial adhesion of rubber composites reinforced with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. First various reactive monomers were grafted onto the fiber surface via a plasma-assisted radical polymerization reaction . Subsequently, the grafted fibers underwent RFL (resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex) dipping process to bolster their interfacial adhesion with rubber. Compared with the original UHMWPE fibers, the modified fiber-reinforced rubber composites showed an increase in H pull-out force by 105.3 %–165.7 N and peel strength by 145.2 % to 10.3 N/mm, reaching the level of general-purpose fabric-core conveyor belt (≥4.5 N/mm). After the modification, the dynamic fatigue life and aging stability of the fiber-reinforced rubber composites were significantly improved, thereby enhancing the service life and safety of the composites. The results show that this method greatly improves the chemical activity, hydrophilicity , and surface roughness of UHMWPE fibers with minimal damage, rendering it a promising choice for industrial applications.

Improved adhesion properties of poly-p-phenyleneterephthamide fibers with a rubber matrix via UV-initiated grafting modification

Rina Sa,Yan Yan,Lei Wang,Yuan Li,Liqun Zhang,Nanying Ning,Wencai Wang,Ming Tian

In this research, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induced graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was performed to modify the surface properties of poly-p-phenyleneterephthamide (PPTA) fibers. The improvement of adhesion with a rubber matrix was achieved due to the introduction of epoxy groups. The successful grafting of GMA on the PPTA fiber surface was ascertained by characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The tensile properties of PPTA fibers after each stage of surface modification were determined by tensile testing of single-filaments. A single-fiber pull-out test was applied to evaluate the adhesion of PPTA fibers with the rubber matrix. The pull-out force of grafted PPTA fibers exceeded that of the pristine fibers by 53.7%. Resorcinol–formaldehyde–latex (RFL) dipping was applied to further improve the adhesion properties. As a result, the fibers with GMA grafting followed by RFL dipping exhibited a 80.8% improvement compared with the pristine fibers and achieved much higher adhesion strength with rubber matrix, compared to the PPTA fibers modified with conventional industrial method of isocyanate (NCO) and RFL two bath dipping.

Payne effect and Mullins effect of silica filled butadiene rubber nanocomposites vulcanizates and their unextractable gels

Xinke Zhong,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

Rubber nanocomposites exhibit strain softening under large-amplitude oscillation shear and large-strain cyclic tension while the mechanisms remain unresolved. Herein we systematically investigate the Payne effect and Mullins effect of unfilled and silica filled butadiene rubber (BR) vulcanizates to clarify the impacts of crosslinking density, sol fractions, and filler content. During large-amplitude oscillation shear, the critical strain amplitude for the onset of Payne effect is closely related to storage modulus in the linear viscoelastic region. During cyclic tension deformations, the recovery hysteresis energy and accumulating softening energy are involved in the local deformation of the rubber matrix, which is promoted by the filler phase. These findings are illuminative for optimizing performance of rubber nanocomposite products by controlling the nonideal network structure of viscoelastic rubber matrix.
