In this work, a facile and environmentally friendly strategy was proposed for the production of reducing sugars from enzymatic hydrolysis of rubber wood by surfactant-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment. Compared with hydrothermal pretreatment, the addition of surfactants (Tween 40) significantly increased the reducing sugars concentration, the highest reducing sugars concentration was up to 22.47 g/L. After surfactant-assisted pretreatment, the crystallinity index of rubber wood hydrolysis residues increased and then decreased with the addition amount of Tween 40. The surfactant-assisted pretreated rubber wood featured high cellulose and hemicellulose conversion rates of 95.1% and 95.4% respectively, which was 122.2% and 41.1% higher than the hydrothermally pretreated rubber wood. It was also found that surfactant-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment had the same improvement effect on increasing the sugar production of other lignocellulose. The results showed that surfactant-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment is a promising and universal method for developing biomass-based products.

Rubberwood has high starch content and is susceptible to fungal and microbial attack. The modification of starch can prevent it from becoming a nutrient source of microorganisms and realize the purpose of anti-mildew and anti-corrosion of rubber wood. Understanding the structure and physicochemical properties of rubberwood starch aids to explore suitable methods for starch modification. This study investigates the distribution of starch in rubberwood and explores the feasibility of extracting starch by three different methods (water extraction, sodium metabisulfite extraction and ethanol extraction). The results showed that the distribution of rubberwood starch was consistent with the typical distribution of wood starch, mainly distributed in thin-walled cells. Three extraction methods proved the feasibility of extracting starch from rubberwood thin-walled cells. The microstructure, physical and chemical properties and structure of rubberwood starch were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, polarizing light microscope and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The results showed that compared with the internal starch of rubberwood, the shape of the starches extracted by the three methods did not change significantly, and they were all spherical and elliptical, with stable A-type crystal structure and obvious Malta cross diffraction pattern. However, it is worth noting that sodium metabisulfite and ethanol will increase the swelling power of rubberwood starch, which provides new insights into other uses of rubberwood starch. This work not only enriched our understanding of the characteristics of rubberwood starch, but also laid a theoretical basis and practical guidance for the development of efficient mildew prevention technology of rubberwood products.

Rubberwood was modified using a two-step process involving impregnation with maleated lignin (ML) followed by densification. The effects of ML modification and densification on the physical and mechanical properties of modified wood were studied. The successful preparation of ML was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In addition, scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the densified rubberwood structure, which featured fully compressed cell walls and cell lumina filled with ML. The rubberwood modification resulted in a more uniform structure and increased density compared to untreated wood. Further, water immersion and moisture absorption experiments revealed thickness swelling of only 27.7% and 20.9%, a reduction of nearly 76% and 55%, respectively, compared to the densified wood that was only impregnated with water. The ML modification can alleviate the embrittlement of wood caused by densification. The modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity of ML-treated and densified wood improved by nearly 54% and 200%, respectively, compared to untreated wood. Therefore, the synergistic treatment strategy can contribute to the high-value utilization of low-quality rubberwood.

Co-substrate fermentation has become an essential approach to achieving high-efficiency and low-cost production of poly (β- l -malic acid) (PMA). Herein, sustainable rubberwood ( Hevea brasiliensis ) hydrolysate (RWH) was co-fermented by A. pullulans to synthesize PMA using glucose and xylose as co-substrate carbon sources. Moreover, vitamin B was explored as nutrient supplementation in this study. Results showed that compared with the single RWH substrate, the PMA production of co-substrate fermentation increased by 38–52%. Furthermore, the addition of VB 6 promoted the utilization of substrates and shortened the fermentation cycle of PMA. During the scale-up fermentation, the PMA yield reached 0.50–0.54 g/g. Compared with traditional glucose culture medium, co-substrate fermentation improved the conversion rate of carbon sources and reduced PMA production cost by 14.9–36.6%. This work provides a new path for high-efficiency and economical industrial fermentation technology of PMA.

Waste rubber wood (RW) is the castoff of rubber plantation with abundant reservation but without high-value utilization. In this study, cellulose with high purity has been efficiently isolated from waste RW and further processed into cellulose nanocrystals. By means of acetylation, more hydrophobic cellulose-based products, namely acetylated rubber wood cellulose (Ac–RWC) and acetylated rubber wood cellulose nanocrystals (Ac–RW–CNC) had been attempted as reinforcing fillers for fabricating two series of PLA-based composite films via spin coating instead of currently prevailing melt compounding technique. To ensure a uniformed dispersion of fillers in PLA matrix, the addition of reinforcing filler should be equal to or less than 5% based on the film dry weight. Compared with pure PLA film, the Ac–RWC reinforced PLA composite films are more thermally stable, while the Ac–RW–CNC reinforced PLA composite films on the other hand exhibit more enhanced performance in mechanical properties and the degree of crystallinity. The highest tensile strength (55.0 MPa) and Young’s modulus (3.9 GPa) were achieved for 5%Ac–RW–CNC/PLA composite film.
