Hypochlorous acid (HOCl)/hypochlorite (ClO − ) was a biologically important component of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and plays a key role in human immune function systems. HOCl/ClO − can destroy invasive bacteria and pathogens , and mediate the physiological balance of the organism with low concentrations, and cause oxidation of the biomolecules such as proteins, cholesterol and nucleic acid in biological cells, leading to a series of diseases with over capacity. Therefore, quantifying the content of HOCl/ClO − in organisms are extremely urgent. In this work, coumarin-salicylic hydrazide Schiff base ( CMSH ), a ratiometric and colorimetric fluorescent probe for ClO- detection based on coumarin as the fluorophore unit was rationally designed and synthesized. The results indicated that CMSH exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for ClO- identification. Additionally, the ratios (I 470 /I 532 ) displayed brilliant ClO − -dependent quick and sensitive performance within 40 s and limitation of 128 nM, respectively. As well as the color of the solution changes from green to colorless accompanied by the fluorescence form green turns into blue with addition of ClO − . Totally, CMSH has been successfully employed as ratiometric sensor to image in living cells, bacteria and zebrafish with low cytotoxicity and good permeability.

Hypochlorite (OCl − ) plays important roles both in physiological and pathological processes, the detection of which is of great significance. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe based on the triphenylamine-type schiff base derivative (TPAD) was developed to detect OCl − . Probe TPAD exhibited specific fluorescence response toward ClO − with the fluorescence quenching rate up to 80%, and the detection limit was estimated to be 0.8 μM. The sensing mechanism study demonstrated that TPAD reacted with ClO − via an oxidation process, which was evidenced by MS and NMR characterization. Moreover, owing to the excellent sensing properties and negligible cytotoxicity, TPAD was successfully applied in the bioimaging of OCl − in living A549 cells.

Hypochlorite (ClO − )-based chlorination has shown effectiveness in oxidizing and purifying ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and thallium (Tl) individually. However, the co-removal of these contaminants remains understudied. Addressing this gap, our study investigated the behaviors and mechanisms of NaClO-based breakpoint chlorination in oxidizing and removing both Tl and NH 4 + -N. The interaction among thallous ions (Tl + ), NH 4 + -N and NaClO in wastewater created a synergistic oxidation effect, which led to high removal efficiencies, exceeding 97 % for both Tl and NH 4 + -N, achieved with a NaClO concentration of 7 mmol/L, across a pH range of 6 to 10 in less than 5 min. Notably, the presence of Tl + , rather than Tl 3+ or Tl 2 O 3 , significantly enhanced the conversion of hypochlorite alongside NH 4 + -N. This coupled process generated chloramines and nitroxyl, along with oxygen-independent hydroxyl radicals formation, which further transformed into chloride radicals, dichlorine radical anions, and chlorine oxide radicals. Introducing these highly reactive species into the binary-pollutant system marked a substantial improvement over single-pollutant systems, yielding significantly higher removal efficiencies. These findings shed new light on the role of Tl in breakpoint chlorination for wastewater containing both Tl and NH 4 + -N.

Solar photolysis of free chlorine (solar/chlorine) in bromide-containing water occurs under various scenarios, such as chlorinated reservoirs and outdoor swimming pools, and the formation of chlorate and bromate is an important issue in the system. We reported unexpected trends for the formation of chlorate and bromate in the solar/chlorine system. Excess chlorine inhibited the formation of bromate, i.e., increasing chlorine dosages from 50 to 100 μM reduced the bromate yield from 6.4 to 1.2 μM in solar/chlorine at 50 μM bromide and pH 7. The yield of bromate in solar/chlorine at 100 μM chlorine and 50 μM bromide in 240 min was 18.8% of that at 50 μM bromine only. The underlying mechanism was that HOCl can react with bromite (BrO 2 − ) to form HOClOBrO − , whose multi-step transformation finally formed chlorate as the major product and bromate as the minor product. This reaction overwhelmed the oxidation of bromite to form bromate by reactive species, such as • OH, BrO • and ozone. On the other hand, the presence of bromide greatly enhanced the formation of chlorate. Increasing bromide concentrations from 0 to 50 μM enhanced the chlorate yields from 2.2 to 7.0 μM at 100 μM chlorine. The absorbance of bromine was higher than that of chlorine, thus the photolysis of bromine formed higher levels of bromite at higher bromide concentrations. Then, bromite rapidly reacted with HOCl to form HOClOBrO − and it further transformed to chlorate. Additionally, 1 mg L − 1 NOM had a negligible effect on bromate yields in solar/chlorine at 50 μM bromide, 100 μM chlorine and pH 7. This study demonstrated a new pathway of chlorate and bromate formation in the solar/chlorine system with bromide.

Hypochlorous acid (HClO) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) are widely present in living organisms and the environment and are closely associated with health or disease in living organisms. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new materials and methods that can detect HClO/ClO − quickly, easily and sensitively. Based on the oxidative property of hypochlorite on the amine bond of diaminomaleonitrile Schiff bases, we have designed and synthesized a ‘Turn-ON’ fluorescent/colourimetric dual-mode probe with high selectivity for HClO/ClO − . In the detection system (DMF: water=1:1, v/v), the addition of HClO/ClO − to the probe was accompanied by a gradual change in the colour of the solution from pink to colourless, with a concomitant 97-fold enhancement of fluorescence intensity at 522 nm (Tun-On), a Stokes shift of 96 nm and a detection limit of 250 nM. A novel HClO/ClO − sensing mechanism in which the imine bond of the probe is oxidized to a carboxyl group by HClO/ClO − was demonstrated by high-resolution mass spectrometry and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the probe was applied to the spiked recovery detection of HClO/ClO − in real water samples and the imaging of hypochlorite in cells.

As abnormal levels of hypochlorous acid (HClO) and cysteine (Cys) are associated with some diseases, it is of great importance to detect them accurately. In this work, new carbon dots (N-CDs) for respectively ratiometrically determining HClO and Cys via a “turn-on” mode were prepared. A good linear relationship was obtained between the F548/F640 values and the concentration of HClO in the range of 90–800 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.17 μM. By plotting the F640/F548 values against the Cys concentration, a good linear relationship was obtained in the range of 170–900 μM, with a calculated LOD of 6.63 μM. Furthermore, the response mechanisms of the N-CDs towards HClO and Cys were studied systematically. Compared with reported fluorescent probes that can respectively or sequentially detect two types of small molecules, this “turn-on” luminescence nanosensor has low background interference, so it holds great potential for use in the diagnosis of HClO and Cys correlated diseases.

A new ratiometric and colorimetric fluorescent probe HTD was synthesized based on the reaction of 4-aminophenyl boronic acid pinacol ester and 4-(3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) benzonitrile. The probe exhibited a unique fluorescence response to hypochlorous acid and had good anti-interference performance in the presence of other interference. When HTD met the NaClO, the light orange fluorescence was changed to green with the blue-shifted emission wavelength from 550 to 500 nm. Moreover, the absorbance of HTD’s UV–vis at 300 nm and 375 nm decreased in the presence of NaClO. The limit of detection was 1.83 × 10 –7 M and 2.96 × 10 –6 M based on the fluorescence and UV–vis titration data. NMR, HRMS, and IR spectra suggested that the possible sensing mechanism of HTD to NaClO was the formation of initial compound 4-(3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) benzonitrile due to the oxidation of hypochlorous acid in aqueous solution. The portable test strips were obtained, and the real water sample test reached good results with spiking recoveries among 92.00% ~ 103.25%. Finally, endogenous hypochlorous acid produced by LPS and PMA was successfully detected by HTD in living mice using in situ fluorescence bioimaging. Graphical abstract

Responsive small-molecule fluorescence probe specific for target analyte detection is an emerging technology for food safety and quality analysis. In this work, we report a new water soluble small-molecule fluorescence probe ( PG ) for the detection of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) in drinking water samples. Probe PG was developed by coupling of a glucosamine into 10-methyl-10H-phenothiazine fluorophore with a HOCl-responsive C=N bond. The thioether is another recognition site that can be oxidized to be sulfoxide in water. Due to the specific reactions triggered by HOCl, probe PG ’s absorption band is blue shifted from 388 to 340 nm, and fluorescence at 488 nm is more than 55-fold enhanced. Probe PG features high fluorescence stability in PBS buffer with varied pH, fast response and high selectivity to HOCl. The application of the probe PG for HOCl detection in real-world samples is demonstrated by HOCl detection in drinking water, including tap water, purified water, and spring water samples. The recoveries of this method for HOCl detection in drinking water are in the range of 99.17–102.3%. This work thus provides a new method for HOCl detection in drinking water with high precision and accuracy.

As a key reactive oxygen species (ROS), hypochlorous acid (HClO) plays a vital role in living systems. Ratiometric and endoplasmic reticulum-targeting probes for highly sensitive detection of hypochlorous acid are in demand. In this paper, we constructed a novel reticulum-targeting and ratiometric fluorescent probe for determining hypochlorous acid. The probe applied 4-aminonaphthalimide as the fluorescent group, employed the (2-aminoethyl)thiourea group as a specific recognition unit, and used the p-toluenesulfonamide group as the localization group of the endoplasmic reticulum. When HClO is absent, the probe underwent an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process and displayed green emission. In the presence of HClO, the ICT process was inhibited, which induced a 49 nm blue-shift of fluorescence emission from 533 nm to 484 nm. The ratiometric fluorescent probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for HClO. Furthermore, the ratiometric fluorescent probe could work in a wide pH range. The fluorescence intensity ratios (I484nm/I533nm) exhibited a linear response to the concentration of HClO from 5.0 × 10−7 to 1.0 × 10−5 mol L−1. The detection limit was evaluated to be 1.0 × 10−7 mol L−1 for HClO. In addition, the probe displayed an excellent endoplasmic reticulum-targeting ability, and has been successfully applied for the confocal imaging of HClO in the endoplasmic reticulum of PC-12 cells with almost no cell toxicity. All of such outstanding properties demonstrated that it could be employed to sense HClO in the endoplasmic reticulum of living cells.

BACKGROUND In order to prolong the storage and inhibit microorganisms of pakchoi, the antibacterial activity and mechanism of ultrasound combined with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO-US), the efficiency of NaClO-US in reducing Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as well as preserving quality of pakchoi were investigated. RESULTS Ultrasound treatment could significantly reduce the usage of NaClO solution from 800 ppm to 500 ppm. NaClO-US decreased the counts of E. coli , S. aureus and P. aeruginosa , which disrupted the bacterial cell membrane with cytoplasmic leakage. In addition, NaClO-US significantly increased cell membrane permeability, while cell membrane integrity decreased, the secondary structure of bacterial proteins showed several obvious changes, such as the increase of random coil content, as well as the decrease of α -helix content. The bacterial counts, E. coli , S. aureus and P. aeruginosa population in pakchoi treated with NaClO-US reduced by 1.89, 1.40, 1.60, 1.72 log CFU g −1 , respectively compared to control sample after storage for 15 days. NaClO-US resulted in minimum chlorophyll depletion, flavor and sensory deterioration. CONCLUSION NaClO-US solution treatment inhibited microorganisms and prolonged storage of pakchoi. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

A novel and high-efficiency sludge pretreatment method by combination of freezing and calcium hypochlorite (CH) for promoting the anaerobic fermentation performance was reported in this work. Experimental results indicated that a maximum biohydrogen production of 18.18 ± 0.43 mL/g volatile suspended solids (VSS) was realized by freezing (−5 °C) combined with CH (0.12 g/g VSS) pretreatment, which was 1.19, 4.05 and 11.36 times to that from the sole CH, sole freezing and control fermenters, respectively. Mechanism study showed that freezing + CH pretreatment efficiently disintegrated sludge flocs, producing abundant substrates for anaerobic fermentation. Model substances degradation experiment showed that the biochemical processes were all suppressed by freezing + CH method, but the suppressive degrees for hydrogen-consuming processes were greater than hydrogen-producing processes. 16S rRNA analysis revealed that the microbial community in freezing + CH treated reactor was more beneficial to hydrogen generation than that in the control, because the abundance of functional microbes was enriched from 6.81 % to 34.95 % by the co-treatment. Furthermore, sludge dewatering performance, including settleability, dewaterability and filterability, was enhanced by freezing + CH pretreatment.
