Novel organic-inorganic hybrid polyphosphazene modified manganese hypophosphite shuttles towards the fire retardance and anti-dripping of PET

Teng Li,Shuai Li,Tongjun Ma,Yi Zhong,Linping Zhang,Hong Xu,Bijia Wang,Xueling Feng,Xiaofeng Sui,Zhize Chen,Zhiping Mao

A novel organic-inorganic hybrid polyphosphazene modified manganese hypophosphite (PZS-MnHP) shuttles was facilely fabricated and applied in enhancing the flame retardance and anti-dripping behavior of PET. The PET containing 5 wt% PZS-MnHP shuttles (PET/FR5.0) possessed a LOI value of 25.3% and corresponding melt-dripping was greatly restricted with few droplets. Incorporating 5 wt% PZS-MnHP shuttles also brought about dramatic decrease in the fire hazard of PET, for instance, 57.0% maximum reduction in heat release rate. Moreover, the tensile strength of PET/FR5.0 composite was gradually increased from 50.87 MPa to 55.68 MPa, relevant elongation at break was enhanced by 7.2% compared with that of PET. The flame-retardation mechanism of PZS-MnHP shuttles in PET was also systematically investigated. The results showed PZS-MnHP shuttles extremely accelerated the formation of intumescent char, cutting off the supply of external oxygen and heat. Moreover, inflammable gases including SO 2 and NH 3 released from PZS-MnHP shuttles efficiently diluted combustible organic volatiles in burning area, further blocking the spread of fire.

Aiming at durable flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and qualified mechanical properties of polyurea by using surface-treated aluminum hypophosphite and interface-regulated MXene

Qinyong Liu,Jingfan Zhang,Ximei Wen,Baozhu Wang,Jun Sun,Hongfei Li,Xiaoyu Gu,Sheng Zhang

This research outlines a strategy to improve both the flame retardancy and water resistance of polyurea (PUA) while largely preserving its mechanical integrity. Aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) was coated by triphenyl phosphate (TPP), and the resultant TPP@AHP exhibited improved compatibility and hydrophobicity. Additionally, ZIF-8@MXene, a nanohybrid material combining a metal-organic framework with MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) sheets, served as both a reinforcing filler and a synergistic flame retardant. The use of 17 wt% TPP@AHP and 1 wt% ZIF-8@MXene in PUA enabled the composite to achieve a UL-94 V-0 rating and to maintain a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 26.9% even after 7 days of water immersion. Cone calorimetry tests demonstrated that this formulation significantly reduced the peak heat release rate by 70.9%, total heat release by 30.8%, and smoke production by 32.1%. This work provided a feasible solution for preparing PUA composites with durable flame retardancy and qualified mechanical properties.

Preparation of Hypophosphorous Acid by Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis: Process Optimization and Phosphorous Acid Minimization

Kaixuan Yan,Xiaofeng Hang,Junsheng Liu,Jianquan Luo,Yinhua Wan

Hypophosphorous acid (H3PO2) is an important chemical product with wide applications in pharmaceuticals and electroless plating. In this study, bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) was used to produce H3PO2 from sodium hypophosphite salt (NaH2PO2) to replace the traditional preparation methods. The BMED process was optimized in terms of current density, NaH2PO2 salt concentration, and initial NaOH concentration of the base solution. The results indicated that low Na+ leakage occurred at lower salt concentrations. Under the optimum conditions, such a BMED system obtained a high concentration of H3PO2, a low Na+ content, and a low energy consumption, equaling to 1.03 mol/L, 670 ppm, and 1.18 kW h/kg, respectively. To minimize the amount of phosphorous acid (H3PO3) generated from H3PO2 oxidation during the BMED process, a nitrogen aeration operation was applied in both the acid and salt chambers, decreasing the HPO32– content to 251 ppm, which was 44.1% lower than that without a dissolved oxygen content control strategy. The newly produced H3PO3 during the BMED process was reduced by 96.5%. The obtained results indicated that the BMED process has great potential for application in the production of high-quality H3PO2 from NaH2PO2 in industry.

Influence of Reduction Temperature on the Structure and Naphthalene Hydrogenation Saturation Performance of Ni2P/Al2O3 Catalysts

Ze Li,Jie-Ying Jing,Zhi-Qiang Qie,Wen-Ying Li

Jet fuel rich in hydroaromatics and cycloalkanes could be derived from direct coal liquefaction oil via the hydrogenation saturation process. Developing an efficient catalyst to transform naphthalene hydrocarbons to hydroaromatics and cycloalkanes with high selectivity plays a significant role in realizing the above hydrogenation saturation process. In this work, Ni2P/Al2O3catalysts were prepared at different reduction temperatures via the thermal decomposition of hypophosphite. We investigated the influence of reduction temperature and the results showed that reduction temperature had an important impact on the properties of Ni2P/Al2O3catalysts. When the reduction temperature was 400 °C, the Ni2P particle size of the Ni2P/Al2O3catalyst was 3.8 nm and its specific surface area was 170 m2/g. Furthermore, the Ni2P/Al2O3catalyst reduced at 400 °C obtained 98% naphthalene conversion and 98% decalin selectivity. The superior catalytic activity was attributed to the smaller Ni2P particle size, higher specific surface area and suitable acidity, which enhanced the adsorption of naphthalene on Ni2P/Al2O3catalyst.Keywords:nickel phosphide;reduction temperature;naphthalene hydrogenation;thermal decomposition of hypophosphite

Facile modification of aluminum hypophosphate and its flame retardancy for polystyrene

Wensheng Li,Liangyuan Qi,Daolin Ye,Wei Cai,Weiyi Xing

A phosphorus-containing flame retardant, aluminum hypophosphite (AHPi), has been modified by (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH550) to prepare flame-retardant polystyrene (PS). The influence of modified AHPi on the morphology and characterization was investigated, and differences in flame retardant properties of the PS/AHPi and PS/modified AHPi were compared. The PS composite can pass the vertical burning tests (UL-94 standard) with a V-0 rating when the mass content of modified AHPi reaches 20%, compared with the mass content of 25% AHPi. The element mapping of the PS composite shows that modified AHPi has better dispersion in PS than AHPi. Thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that adding modified AHPi can advance the initial decomposition temperature of the composite material. With the addition of modified AHPi, the decrease in peak heat release rate (pHRR) is more evident than AHPi, and the char yield of the resultant PS composites gradually increased. With the addition of 25% modified AHPi, the pHRR and total heat release of PS composites decreased by 81.4% and 37.6%. The modification of AHPi promoted its dispersion in the PS matrix and improved the char formation of PS composites. The results of real-time infrared spectrometry of PS composites, Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron analysis of the char layer indicated that modified AHPi has flame retardancy in condensed and gas phases.

CaO2/UV Process for One-Step Phosphorus Removal and Recovery from Hypophosphite: Simultaneous Oxidation and Precipitation

Shaopeng Zhang,Bingnan Song,Runhua Wang,Zhengshuo Zhan,Michel Saakes,Renata D. van der Weijden,Cees J. N. Buisman,Yang Lei

Hypophosphite (P(I)) is ubiquitous in some waste streams. It may contribute to the eutrophication of water bodies, yet conventional methods are ineffective in treating P(I)-laden wastewater. Here, we propose a novel CaO2/ultraviolet (UV) system that can simultaneously remove P(I) and recover Ca-phosphate. This system lies in the simultaneous release of OH–, Ca2+, and H2O2, with the last being activated and producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) under UV irradiation. Subsequently, the generated ROS converts P(I) to phosphite and phosphate, forming Ca-phosphate with the released Ca2+ at pH 11.0. Beyond activating H2O2, UV light also promotes the dissolution of CaO2 powders. The system removes 97.0% of 1.0 mM P(I) in 6 h with dosing 2.0 mM CaO2. The presence of 5.0 mM HCO3– drops P(I) removal from 97.0 to 14.1% by competing with P(V) toward Ca2+. Nitrate and humic acid show similar effects by adsorbing UV light or quenching ROS. However, we may overcome the adverse effects with an enhanced CaO2 dose. For example, with 10 mM CaO2, the CaO2/UV system removed more than 78% of non-ortho P from actual electroless rinse water. These results confirmed that CaO2/UV is an exciting all-in-one system for treating P(I)-laden wastewater and recovering valuable P products.

Electroless deposition of Ni–P/Au coating on Cu substrate with improved corrosion resistance from Au(III)–DMH based cyanide-free plating bath using hypophosphite as a reducing agent

Bo Wu,Baizhao Tan,Guizhen Tan,Ming Zeng,Jinyi Luo,Guanghui Hu,Jiye Luo,Zhifeng Hao,Shaomei Lai,Binyun Liu

The green cyanide-free gold deposition is an important development direction in electroless gold plating. However, the commonly Au(I) based cyanide-free gold plating bath always suffers from severe corrosion to the Ni–P layer and unsatisfactory service life of the bath. In this work, a green and environmentally friendly cyanide-free gold plating bath was developed with hypophosphite added as a reducing agent into the Au(III)–DMH (5,5-dimethylhydantoin) based plating bath to retard the corrosion of the Ni–P layer. SEM micrographs combined with XRD and XPS analysis indicated that the electroless deposited gold was pure and compact. And XRD also revealed that the oriented deposition of gold was growing preferentially on Au (111). Corrosion tests, including salt spray tests, potentiodynamic polarization tests, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests, indicated that the obtained Cu/Ni–P/Au coatings had significantly improved corrosion resistance performance with the loading of hypophosphite as the reducing agent. The baths remained transparent and no turbidity or precipitates were detected for 210 days, reflecting good stability. The detection for the Ni2+ concentration in the bath showed that adding hypophosphite could retard the replacement reaction between Au3+ and the Ni–P layer in part and this is important for decreasing the severe corrosion of the Ni–P layer. Moreover, Au was inactive for catalyzing the oxidation of hypophosphite during the deposition process which was confirmed furthermore via quantum chemical calculations. Therefore, our developed green cyanide-free electroless gold deposition process can beneficially provide research value and application prospects in microelectronic industry.

Ablation properties of zinc borate and aluminum hypophosphite filled silicone rubber composites

Hao Zhang,Liwei Yan,Yuan Wang,Shengtai Zhou,Mei Liang,Huawei Zou,Yang Chen

The ablative properties of epoxy modified silicone rubber composites filled with zinc borate (ZB) and aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) were studied. The decomposition of the added fillers and covering connection of residual on the substrate contribute to the improvement of heat insulation. The ablation test shows that the formation of a dense char layer with certain strength is key to improving the ablative properties. The optimal ablative performance is achieved when the concentration of ZB and AHP is 10 and 5 phr, respectively. Under such circumstances, the linear ablation rate is as low as 0.032 mm/s, which is about 61% lower than the pure silicone rubber. Furthermore, the structure and composition of the formed char layer were analyzed using X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Mitigation the release of toxic PH3 and the fire hazard of PA6/AHP composite by MOFs

Yuyang Li,Xiangmei Li,Ye-Tang Pan,Xingyan Xu,Yunze Song,Rongjie Yang

Aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) is a high-efficiency phosphorus-based flame retardant with high P content, which is widely used in Polyamide 6 (PA6). However, AHP releases phosphine gas (PH 3 ) at high temperatures, which is highly toxic to human’s health and environment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have porous structure exhibiting high performance in gas adsorption. Therefore, mesoporous iron (III) carboxylate [MIL-100 (Fe)] was synthesized in this work and employed to study the adsorption capacity of toxic PH 3 in PA6/AHP composite during processing. AHP was combined with melamine cyanurate (MCA) and MIL-100 (Fe) followed by blending with PA6 to prepare PA6 composites (PA6/MA and PA6/MAF). PA6/MAF with the weight ratio of 5:5 performed well in inhibiting the release of PH 3 during the processing of composite as well as the accelerated thermal experiment devised by our group. Besides, PA6/MAF (5:5) showed relatively low fire hazard reflected by the reduction of the peak of heat release rate of PA6 composite from 962 to 260 kW/m 2 compared with that of pure PA6 in the cone calorimeter test, and MIL-100 (Fe) along with MCA also presented synergistic effect in suppressing the emission of carbon monoxide. The subtle selection of MOFs herein has the potential to be used as a promising synergist for hazardous gases released from polymer composites to improve the occupational and fire safety in the society.

Preparation and characterization of microencapsulated aluminum hypophosphite and its performance on the thermal, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties of epoxy resin

Yang Li,Juncheng Jiang,Zhiquan Chen,Zhongwei Chen,Lei Ni

A novel microcapsule flame retardant microencapsulated aluminum hypophosphite (MAHP) was introduced. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the shell material on the surface of MAHP. The water contact angle (WCA) experiments show that the WCA of MAHP (71.4°) is significantly larger than that of aluminum hypophosphite (34.4°). And the interfacial free energy between MAHP and epoxy resin (EP) is only 7.89 mJ/m 2 , which results in good compatibility with EP. The results from differential scanning calorimeter test indicate that the addition of MAHP can improve the heat resistance of EP matrix. Thermogravimetric (TG) tests show that EP/MAHP has the largest amount of residue (32.03 wt%). The combustion behaviors of flame-retardant EP (FR-EP) composites were evaluated by limiting oxygen index, UL-94, and cone calorimetry. The results show that the microencapsulation to AHP in this study can significantly improve the flame retardancy of EP. Thermogravimetric infrared analysis was used to investigate the gas-phase products. Surface morphology and structure of char residues of EP and FR-EP was also studied. The carbon layer became quite dense and continuous when MAHP was added. On the premise of improving the flame retardancy, the mechanical properties of the material are retained. The tensile strength and bending strength of EP/MAHP-3 were 23.98 and 50.75 MPa, respectively.

Hypophosphite tailored graphitized hierarchical porous biochar toward highly efficient solar thermal energy harvesting and stable Storage/Release

Pan-Pan Zhao,Cong Deng,Ze-Yong Zhao,Peng Lu,Shuang He,Yu-Zhong Wang

Utilization of renewable solar energy is a promising pathway to relieve the severe energy shortage in current fossil fuel society, for which phase change materials (PCMs) based on sustainable porous biomass carbon materials represent an attractive and enormously potential option. However, structural tailor of hierarchical pores independent of biomass natural structure is still difficult for these carbon materials, thus seriously limiting their efficiency in solar thermal energy harvesting and stable storage/release. In this work, hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) derived from chestnuts were fabricated by using aluminum hypophosphite (AP) as a multifunctional (dehydrating, blowing, and crosslinking) activator. Different measurements confirmed that unique interpenetrating HPC network structures with continuous channels were tailored via the triple effects of AP. The resulting HPC displays high pore volume and high thermal conductivity. The HPC-stabilized composite PCM with 85 wt% octadecane (Octadecane 85 @HPC) possesses the high transition enthalpy of 216.2 J g −1 and shows high reliability in thermal cycle test. Compared with currently reported similar bio-based PCMs, the Octadecane 85 @HPC shows higher energy storage capacity. Interestingly, the solar thermal energy conversion efficiency of the Octadecane 85 @HPC reaches 96.1%, presenting excellent solar energy harvesting capacity. This work provides a promising strategy to tailor biomass HPC for highly efficient solar thermal energy harvesting and storage/release.

Preparation of Montmorillonite–Melamine Cyanurate and Inhibition of the Emission of Phosphine from PA6/Aluminum Hypophosphate

Lin Wang,Yuyang Li,Chenyang Yan,Xiangmei Li,Jiyu He,Rongjie Yang

In order to mitigate the release of toxic phosphine from aluminum hypophosphite in twin-screw processing, montmorillonite–melamine cyanurate was prepared by three methods: (1) mechanical intercalation, (2) water intercalation and (3) in situ intercalation. The sheet spacing of montmorillonite was increased from 1.140 nm to 1.141 nm, 1.208 nm and 1.217 nm for these three methods, respectively, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) proved that melamine cyanurate was successfully inserted into the montmorillonite sheets. The montmorillonite–melamine cyanurate from in situ intercalation can best inhibit the release of PH3from aluminum hypophosphite, and the peaks of phosphine, mean values of phosphine and integral of phosphine were reduced by 81.9%, 72.1% and 72.2%, respectively. The mode of action of montmorillonite–melamine cyanuric inhibition of the emission of phosphine from aluminum hypophosphite can be attributed to the physical absorption of montmorillonite and the chemical bonding of melamine cyanurate. In addition, in situ intercalation can slightly improve flame retardancy, attributed to incomplete exfoliation of montmorillonite sheets.
