Technology for an Energy-Saving and Fast Synthesis of Polyvinyl Butyral in a Microreactor System

Bai Yang Zhou,Xi Yan Lin,Kai Wang,Guang Sheng Luo

In this work, we established a cascade cooling and two-step feeding technology for the energy-saving and fast synthesis of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) with a low molecular weight in a microreactor system. Because of the strong mixing capacity of the microreactor and the relatively higher initial reaction temperature of 60 °C compared to existing methods, the condensation reaction between the raw materials of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and n-butanal was highly intensified and the reaction rate was faster, along with less energy consumption for cooling. By reducing the aging temperature to 40–55 °C, which is far below the glass transition temperature of PVB, we could also lower energy consumption and improve the morphology of PVB. Benefiting from the new technology, the acetalization degree (AD) of PVB reached more than 78%. By applying the two-step n-butanal feeding method in the new technology, the utilization ratio of n-butanal was dramatically increased to more than 99.7%, which was the best result among current published reports. Moreover, a PVB product with a low molecular weight has been successfully prepared with the new technology. This work demonstrates a promising continuous microreaction process for greener and energy-saving synthesis of PVB.

Pickering emulsion stabilized with charge separation and transfer modulated photocatalyst for enzyme-photo-coupled catalysis

Jiali Liu,Huicong Dai,Xin Liu,Yiqi Ren,Maodi Wang,Qihua Yang

Biocatalytic reduction is extensively employed in chemical and pharmaceutical industries due to its notable advantages including high activity, selectivity and mild reaction conditions, however, the stoichiometric use of the expensive NADH (reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) hinders its widespread application. Despite the persisting challenges of low charge separation efficiency and limited solubility of organic substrates in aqueous phase, in situ photocatalytic NADH regeneration remains a promising solution. Herein, we report the construction of an enzyme-photo-coupled catalytic system in Pickering emulsion droplet, which was stabilized by a charge separation and transfer modulated photocatalyst. The photocatalyst integrated with visible light driven conjugated polymer, TiO 2 and electron mediator greatly enhanced the cascade electron transfer from photocatalyst to NAD + . Consequently, NADH production rate over the integrated photocatalyst reaches as high as 2.4 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light irradiation, 12 folds higher than the corresponding physical mixture. Furthermore, the enzyme-photo-coupled catalytic system was constructed with alcohol dehydrogenase/NAD + confined in the emulsion droplet and photocatalyst assembled at the oil-water interface. The photoactive emulsion continuously catalyzed the n -butyaldehyde reduction to accumulate 16.1 mmol·L −1 butanol, equivalent to 14 cycles for NADH regeneration under visible light irradiation. The primary result demonstrates the potential application prospect of Pickering emulsion in enzyme-photo-coupled catalysis due to the facilitated charge transfer from photocatalyst to NAD + and fast mass diffusion attributed to the large interfacial area of water and oil.

Comparison of key odorants and sensory properties of various caviar with different breeding environments, processing conditions, and grades of quality

Zhuyu Yang,Zefan Chen,Weijia Zhang,Jinlin Wang,Fan Bai,Ruichang Gao,Yujin Li,Jian Li,Yuanhui Zhao,Xinxing Xu

This is the first comprehensive comparison of key odorants and sensory properties of various caviar with different breeding environments, processing conditions, and grades of quality. Ten aroma attributes were identified and rated by sensory descriptive analysis. 47 and 50 volatile compounds were identified by two aroma extraction methods (SPME, SAFE) combined with GC–MS, respectively. 27 potential key aroma-active compounds were quantitated and further screening through AEDA and OAV calculation. Finally, 21 key aroma active compounds (OAV > 1, FD ≥ 9) were screened, including butanal, hexanal, ( Z )-4-heptenal, ( Z )-2-penten-1-ol, 2-nonanone, nonanal, 1-octen-3-ol, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, benzaldehyde, acetic acid and other compounds. Recombination and omission tests verified that these compounds played an important role in the overall aroma profile of different caviar samples. The different contribution of key volatile aroma compounds to the overall aroma system of caviar resulted in the difference of caviar flavor quality.

In-Capillary Chemoselective Tagging-Facilitated Direct nESI-MS Profiling of Carboxyl- and Carbonyl-Containing Metabolites in Urine

Yifan Wei,Xiumei Zheng,Zili Huang,Chunxiao Mou,Xiaobo Xie,Yi Lv

Carboxyl- and carbonyl-containing metabolites (CCMs) are essential for energy metabolism and signaling in living cells and can serve as diagnostic biomarkers for various diseases. However, their low ESI ionization efficiencies and structural diversities could bring difficulties for their direct detection by mass spectrometry. In this work, a chemoselective tagging and acid-trigged release (CTAR) strategy-based nanoelectrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (nESI-MS) platform was developed by immobilizing a cis-diol-containing amine probe (i.e., 3-((2-aminoethyl)amino)propane-1,2-diol, denoted as AEAP-diol) on a coated ESI capillary with boronate esters as acid cleavage site, which can directly and selectively “fish out” targeted CCMs from biological matrices. Following the removal of unwanted species, the AEAP-diol tagged CCMs derivatives can be online released and directly detected by nESI-MS within 1 min. MS/MS fragmentation profiles of these CCMs derivatives exhibited a neutral loss of 91 Da and diagnostic fragments at m/z 118 for carboxyl- and carbonyl-containing metabolites, respectively, thereby enabling unambiguous structural elucidation of unknown CCMs. With high specificity, superior salt tolerance, and outstanding robustness, our CTAR-nESI-MS platform enabled direct and sensitive analysis of CCMs from a single drop of biofluid (2.5 μL of urine), achieving a low detection limit of 0.1 ppb for butyric acid. Using this method, 26 carboxyl- and carbonyl-containing metabolites were identified and quantified in urine samples from esophageal cancer patients and healthy volunteers, revealing significant differences in several reported CCM biomarkers. These findings collectively underscore the potential of CTAR-nESI-MS as a sensitive, cost-effective, and versatile tool for comprehensive metabolite profiling and high-throughput screening applications.

Influence of Filler Microstructure on Propylene/Propane Separation in Calixarene-based Mixed Matrix Membranes

Xiumei Geng,Ruiying Xie,Xinxin Sun,Xiang Zhang,Xuerui Wang,Roberto Castro Muñoz,Meixia Shan,Yatao Zhang

The pure organic nature and solubility of calixarenes in organic solvents position them as prospective fillers for mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). This investigation incorporated two calixarene materials, C-propylpyrogallol[4]arene (PgC 3 ) and sulfonato-calix[6]arene (SCA6), into a 6FDA-TMPDA matrix to fabricate MMMs targeting C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. The separation performance of two calixarenes based MMMs were investigated at various filler loadings. SCA6 was found to be a more suitable filler for 6FDA-TMPDA as its abundant -OH and -HSO 3 functional groups, which strengthened filler-matrix interfacial compatibility. The membrane containing 1 wt% SCA6 in 6FDA-TMPDA exhibited optimal performance, attaining the C 3 H 6 permeability of 69.3 Barrer and an ideal selectivity of 17.3, surpassing the polymeric upper limit. The PgC 3 /6FDA-TMPDA MMMs also displayed a marked selectivity enhancement from 7.1 to 18.9. Both 1 wt% SCA6/6FDA-TMPDA and 5 wt% PgC 3 /6FDA-TMPDA membranes demonstrated long-term stability up to 20 days. The excellent separation performance and operational stability of these MMMs offer a promising alternative for efficient C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation.

Unveiling the role of oxygen vacancies: Micropore-rich Ovm-TiO2 nanocatalysts for enhanced cataluminescence detection of isobutyraldehyde

Shan Tang,Jiumei He,Chengcheng Wan,Li Jiang,Qianchun Zhang

This study addresses the urgent demand for simple and sensitive online gas monitoring technologies in the field of environmental safety by developing a high-performance cataluminescence (CTL) sensor based on oxygen-vacancy-rich microporous titanium dioxide (Ovm-TiO 2 ) for detecting trace isobutyraldehyde (IBL). The Ovm-TiO 2 material, synthesized via a two-step heating process combined with a KBH 4 treatment, features abundant oxygen vacancy defects on its surface, which are pivotal to enhancing sensor performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unravel the surface-mediated mechanism, the oxygen vacancies serve as active sites, drastically enhancing the chemical adsorption and activation of O 2 on the Ovm-TiO 2 surface, which is the key to boosting the cataluminescence efficiency. The developed sensor exhibits outstanding detection performance for IBL, with a wide linear range (0.0100–5.00 mg/L, R 2  = 0.9997), a low detection limit (3 μg/L), and achieved recovery rates of 87.6%–107% with good reproducibility (relative standard deviation, RSD: 5.3%–9.0%) in practical sample analysis. This work not only provides a viable online monitoring solution for IBL but also elucidates the CTL enhancement mechanism at the atomic level, offering important theoretical foundations and practical insights for designing highly sensitive gas sensors.

Tunable synthesis of tailored high-energy-density fuels from coal-based fluorene

Bing-Wei Chen,Hua-Jun Zhai,Yan-Cheng Hu,Yan-Hong Tan,Jia Li,Zhilian Wu,Lin Shao,Jing-Pei Cao

High-energy-density (HED) fuels are crucial for volume-limited hypersonic propulsion systems, yet their petroleum-dependent production poses energy security challenges, especially for nations like China with scarce oil reserves. While coal-derived naphthalenes and anthracenes have been investigated for HED fuel production, their extended π-conjugation restrict tunability of key fuel properties. Here, we propose a molecular engineering strategy using coal-based fluorene as a versatile platform for the tunable synthesis of tailored HED fuels. The ring-increasing condensation of fluorene with benzaldehyde over CaO, coupled with hydrogenation, yields a tetracyclic fuel with higher energy density than JP-10, rendering it a prime candidate for high thrust application. The long-alkyl substitution strategy involving catalytic butylation and hydrogenation generates a butyl-tricyclic fuel with a balanced profile of energy density and flowability, demonstrating potential for cold-climate operations. Additionally, AlCl 3 -catalyzed skeletal rearrangement of hydrogenated fluorene produces trimethyladamantane with exceptional thermal stability, which may mitigate thermal management issues in hypersonic flight. Life-cycle assessment reveals that three fluorene-derived multicyclic alkanes show clear carbon-emission advantages over petroleum-based fuel JP-10. This study provides a strategic material solution for hypersonic aerospace applications, addressing critical performance demands while strengthening supply resilience through feedstock diversification.

Synthesis of novel N-alkyl caffeic acid amides with the enhanced interfacial activity and antioxidant activity using rational molecular design

Zhiheng Yuan,Qicheng Sun,Shangde Sun

The antioxidant activity of hydrophilic caffeic acid (CA) in oil-containing systems is often limited by its insufficient accumulation at the oil–water interface. To address this issue, the N-alkyl CA amides were synthesized by modifying CA with different alkyl chains and tryptophan ethyl ester to improve interfacial activity and antioxidant performance. The N-alkyl CA amides derivatives were evaluated by interfacial tension analysis, oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion oxidation tests, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that the lipophilicity and interfacial activity of CA amides were significantly increased by N-alkylation, and all N-alkyl CA amides derivatives showed the stronger radical-scavenging activity than CA. Furthermore, lipid oxidation in both linoleic acid (LA) and O/W emulsions was effectively inhibited by medium- (octyl) and long-chain (dodecyl) derivatives. The addition of N-octyl CA amide notably increased the oxidation induction temperature of LA from 119.05 °C to 151.84 °C. The formation of lipid oxidation products in the emulsions with N-dodecyl CA amide was significantly inhibited. DFT results further confirmed that the intrinsic antioxidant reactivity of CA amides was enhanced by tryptophan conjugation, whereas the interfacial activity was regulated by the alkyl-chain length. This study demonstrated that this rational molecular design provided an effective strategy for developing novel and highly efficient antioxidants for oil-based food applications.

Reshaping the Binding Pocket of Aldo–Keto Reductase for Enhanced Stereoselectivity and Activity

Jiafeng Niu,Xiaoyu Zhu,Huibing Chi,Bin Ma,Hao Zhu,Zhaoxin Lu,Ping Zhu,Fengxia Lu

The bioremediation strategy is a promising environmentally friendly alternative to eliminate deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination in feed and foodstuffs, but few direct and effective enzyme-catalyzed detoxification methods are currently available. Here, we identified an aldo–keto reductase with DON-degrading ability from the Devosia strain A6-243 (AKR6D2) through a stepwise gene mining approach. AKR6D2 was found to have great thermostability toward the reduction of C3 carbonyl oxygen of 3-keto- deoxynivalenol (3-keto-DON) but with poor stereoselectivity (44.97% e.e. for 3-epi- deoxynivalenol (3-epi-DON)), which limited its practical application. By reshaping the substrate-binding pocket of AKR6D2, a mutant W21A/G53N with excellent catalytic activity (330-fold higher) and stereoselectivity (>99% e.e. for 3-epi-DON) was obtained. Based on the insights provided by molecular dynamics simulations, W21A/G53N-3-keto-DONproR was more favorable in the formation of prereaction states to produce the R-configuration product. This work confirmed that engineered AKR6D2 is a powerful biocatalyst for the detoxification of DON in contaminated food and feed.

Multiple endogenous aldehydes amplify acetaminophen-induced liver injury

Hong Pan,Qi Luo,Qiuyi Jing,Lin Chen,Ni Li,Chao Fang,Fuguo Shi

Acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury is a leading cause of liver injury cases in some Western countries. Although APAP hepatotoxicity is well-documented, the precise mechanisms underlying its pathogenesis remain incompletely understood. This study investigates the role of endogenous aldehydes in exacerbating APAP-induced liver injury through covalent modification of hepatic proteins. Here, 74 free biogenic aldehydes were identified in the mouse liver following APAP administration. Among these, 47 aldehydes exhibited the ability to covalently bind to hepatic proteins, with 29 being reported in the liver for the first time. Protein adducts of 29 aldehydes peaked at 2-3 hours post-APAP treatment. Inhibition of APAP metabolic activation using the CYP2E1 inhibitor 4-methylpyrazole significantly reduced aldehyde-mediated protein adduction. Furthermore, activation of aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 by Alda-1 and the nucleophilic trapping reagent N-acetyl-L-lysine attenuated both protein adduction by aldehydes and APAP-induced liver injury. Notably, these biogenic aldehydes demonstrated intrinsic hepatotoxicity, with their combined effects leading to liver injury through additive covalent protein modifications. Additionally, aldehydes induced c-Jun amino-terminal kinase phosphorylation, further amplifying APAP-induced liver damage. In conclusion, our findings reveal that endogenous aldehydes triggered by the reactive metabolite of APAP amplify liver damage through “additive effects” on covalent protein modification. This study provides novel insights into the mechanisms of APAP hepatotoxicity and highlights potential therapeutic targets for mitigating liver injury.

Efficient dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde over silica supported Cu catalyst prepared from microwave-assisted wet-kneading

Zerui Su,Jian Zhang,Yang Li,Zheyu Qiao,Ziyuan Qiao,Lihang Wei,Xiaoyuan Qin,Xiaoxue Mu,Feng-Shou Xiao

Cu-based catalysts are crucial for the dehydrogenation of ethanol (EtOH) to acetaldehyde (AcH); however, their performance decreases at higher temperatures due to the low Tammann temperature of Cu species. In this study, we synthesized silica-supported Cu catalysts using microwave-assisted wet-kneading. Characterization revealed a typical core–shell structure (Cu@SiO 2 -WK), which demonstrated high activity, excellent selectivity, and superior stability for ethanol dehydrogenation. The Cu@SiO 2 -WK achieved 96.2 % EtOH conversion with 99.9 % selectivity to AcH at 260 °C. After 160 h of reaction, it maintained an EtOH conversion of 90.5 % and AcH selectivity of ∼99.9 %. Following simple calcination, the catalyst’s activity was fully regenerated to 96.1 %. Model catalysts and in situ FT-IR spectra indicate that the core–shell structure significantly enhances the catalyst’s performance in the dehydrogenation of EtOH to AcH.

New silicon nanoparticles for “turn-on” detection of salicylaldehyde in food based on ESIPT mechanism

Jialu Zhang,Yu Fu,Peng Chen,Bowen Liu,Cuiling Ren

Salicylaldehyde is a significant fine chemical product utilized in the flavoring of various foods, excessive intake of salicylaldehyde is detrimental to human health. Its accurate quantitative detection holds considerable importance. Compared with “turn-off” probes, the “turn-on”one allow for more sensitive detection. New silicon nanoparticles (D-SiNPs) which can be used to detect salicylaldehyde by “turn-on” mode were prepared in this work. This D-SiNPs demonstrates highly stability, selectivity and sensitivity. Within the concentration range of 5–50 μM, salicylaldehyde concentration exhibits a strong linear relationship with fluorescence intensity, the limit of detection is calculated to be 0.97 μM. It can be applied to detect salicylaldehyde in baked goods and beverages, achieving good recoveries. These results are highly satisfactory. The detect mechanism was investigated systemetically, the results illustrates this detection is based on Schiff reaction between the amino groups of silicon nanoparticles and aldehyde group of salicylaldehyde, which satisfies the ESIPT mechanism.
