Orthogonal Photochemistry toward Direct Encryption of a 3D-Printed Hydrogel

Di Chen,Chujun Ni,Chen Yang,Ye Li,Xin Wen,Curtis W. Frank,Tao Xie,Hua Ren,Qian Zhao

Encryption technologies are essential for information security and product anti-counterfeiting, but they are typically restricted to planar surfaces. Encryption on complex 3D objects offers great potential to further improve security. However, it is rarely achieved owing to the lack of encoding strategies for nonplanar surfaces. Here, an approach is reported to directly encrypt on a 3D-printed object employing orthogonal photochemistry. In this system, visible light photochemistry is used for 3D printing of a hydrogel, and ultraviolet light is subsequently employed to activate its geometrically complex surface through the dissociation of ortho -nitrobenzyl ester units in a spatioselective manner for information coding. This approach offers a new way for more reliable encryption, and the underlying orthogonal photochemistry can be extended toward functional modification of 3D-printed products beyond information protection.

Orthogonal photochemistry toward spatial reprogramming of 3D-printed liquid crystal elastomers

Hong Wan,Guancong Chen,Xiaorui Zhou,Hongfeng Mu,Chen Yang,Di Chen,Chujun Ni,Zizheng Fang,Qian Zhao,Tao Xie,Ning Zheng

The versatile actuation of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), crucial for future soft robots, is determined by both geometrical shape and mesogen alignment. 3D printing can effectively manufacture complex shapes of LCEs, yet the precise reprogramming of mesogen alignment remains beyond control. To address this challenge, we report an orthogonal photochemistry design to decouple 3D printing and mesogen alignment. The former is achieved through visible light-triggered radical polymerization, whereas the latter can be accomplished via UV irradiation. While seeking suitable UV-sensitive chemistries compatible with traditional photocurable 3D printing, we demonstrate that the hexaarylbiimidazole structure is capable of dynamic bond exchange upon UV exposure. This remarkable UV responsive dynamic feature enables the programming, erasing, and multiple reprogramming of mesogen alignments for a 3D printed LCE in a spatio-temporal manner. The underlying strategy enables the realization of LCEs with arbitrary reprogrammable actuation, enriching the design strategies for future soft robots.

Orthogonal light-triggered multiple effects based on photochromic nanoparticles for DNA cleavage and beyond

Lizhi Jiao,Qisi Li,Chenming Li,Jinhui Gu,Xinping Liu,Shuijian He,Zhijun Zhang

Efficient and spatiotemporally controllable cleavage of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is of great significance for both disease treatment (e.g. tumour, bacterial infection, etc) and molecular biology applications (e.g. gene editing). The recently developed light-induced cleavage strategy based on catalytic nanoparticles has been regarded as a promising strategy for DNA controllable cleavage. Although the regulation based on orthogonal light in biomedical applications holds more significant advantages than that based on single light, nanoparticle-mediated DNA cleavage based on orthogonal light has yet to be reported. In this article, for the first time, we demonstrated an orthogonal light-regulated nanosystem for efficient and spatiotemporal DNA cleavage. In this strategy, tungsten oxide (WO3) nanoparticles with photochromic properties were used as nano-antennae to convert the photoenergy from the orthogonal visible light (405 nm) and near-infrared light (808 nm) into chemical energy for DNA cleavage. We verified that only the orthogonal light can trigger high cleavage efficiency on different types of DNA. Moreover, such an orthogonal light-response nano-system can not only induce significant apoptosis of tumour cells, but also effectively eliminate bacterial biofilms.

Orthogonal light triggering of dynamic polymer networks toward on-demand shape evolution control

Chen Yang,Baoyi Wu,Huijie Wang,Qian Zhao,Di Chen

Shape-shifting materials are bases of soft machines to accomplish sophisticated tasks. While significant progress has been made in diversifying shape transformation behaviors, current evolution pathways are determined by pre-programming approaches, limiting real-time adaptability and flexibility during operation. Here, we report a dynamic covalent polymer network swollen with a nonvolatile aliphatic acid mixture, which enables multi-shape memory properties. During shape-shifting, ultraviolet light is employed to spatially lock the geometries through disulfide bond exchange, allowing the on-demand adjustment of shape evolution. Additionally, the introduction of a photothermal azobenzene derivative allows the gel to undergo sequential shape recovery upon near-infrared light irradiation. This design facilitates real-time control of shape evolution through orthogonal light, overcoming the constraints of pre-programming. Building on this, the polymer is employed as a functional switch with an error-correction capability to enhance electrical safety. The versatility and adaptability of our strategy exhibit great potentials to fabricate future shape-shifting devices.

Orthogonal photochemistry-assisted printing of 3D tough and stretchable conductive hydrogels

Wei Hongqiu,Lei Ming,Zhang Ping,Leng Jinsong,Zheng Zijian,Yu You

3D-printing tough conductive hydrogels (TCHs) with complex structures is still a challenging task in related fields due to their inherent contrasting multinetworks, uncontrollable and slow polymerization of conductive components. Here we report an orthogonal photochemistry-assisted printing (OPAP) strategy to make 3D TCHs in one-pot via the combination of rational visible-light-chemistry design and reliable extrusion printing technique. This orthogonal chemistry is rapid, controllable, and simultaneously achieve the photopolymerization of EDOT and phenol-coupling reaction, leading to the construction of tough hydrogels in a short time ( t gel ~30 s). As-prepared TCHs are tough, conductive, stretchable, and anti-freezing. This template-free 3D printing can process TCHs to arbitrary structures during the fabrication process. To further demonstrate the merits of this simple OPAP strategy and TCHs, 3D-printed TCHs hydrogel arrays and helical lines, as proofs-of-concept, are made to assemble high-performance pressure sensors and a temperature-responsive actuator. It is anticipated that this one-pot rapid, controllable OPAP strategy opens new horizons to tough hydrogels.

Heterogeneous Growth of 3D Printed Polymer Network for Multi-Material Integration

Hongfeng Mu,Ziyin Wang,Xiaona Xu,Hui Yuan,Kaihang Zhang,Yihao Zhang,Xuxu Yang,Jingjun Wu,Qian Zhao,Tao Xie,Zizheng Fang,Ning Zheng

3D printing has been highly pursued owing to its effortless fabrication of custom-defined geometries, yet the integration of multi-material with diverse properties in one printed object remains challenging. In this work, a digital light 3D-printed polymer network that is capable of heterogeneous growth to seamlessly integrate multi-material is designed. This is accomplished through orthogonal photochemistry design, where visible light is utilized to initiate radical polymerization of acrylates for 3D printing. Inspired by plants’ phototropism due to uneven auxin distribution, UV light is employed to induce spatiotemporal catalyst generation for promoting network heterogeneous growth. In this process, it is found that the UV-generated catalyst effectively facilitates the hydrolysis of ketals to produce hydroxyls, which can further serve as “growing sites” to initiate the ring-opening polymerization of polycaprolactone. This enables precise manipulation of both shape and mechanical properties in 3D-printed objects. The distinctive heterogeneous growth mechanism of 3D printing enables the production of multi-material components using a single resin.
