Desalination Characteristics of Cellulose Acetate FO Membrane Incorporated with ZIF-8 Nanoparticles

Tong Li,Yuhong Wang,Xinyan Wang,Caixia Cheng,Kaifeng Zhang,Jie Yang,Guangshuo Han,Zhongpeng Wang,Xiuju Wang,Liguo Wang

Forward osmosis membranes have a wide range of applications in the field of water treatment. However, the application of seawater desalination is restricted, so the research of forward osmosis membranes for seawater desalination poses new challenges. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was synthesized by a mechanical stirring method, and its crystal structure, surface morphology, functional group characteristics, thermochemical stability, pore size distribution and specific surface area were analyzed. The cellulose acetate (CA)/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane was prepared by using the synthesized ZIF-8 as a modified additive. The effects of the additive ZIF-8 content, coagulation bath temperature, mixing temperature and heat treatment temperature on the properties of the CA/ZIF-8 forward osmosis membrane were systematically studied, and the causes were analyzed to determine the best membrane preparation parameters. The structure of the CA membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membranes prepared under the optimal conditions were characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle and Atomic force microscope (AFM). Finally, the properties of the HTI membrane (Membrane manufactured by Hydration Technology Innovations Inc.), CA forward osmosis membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane were compared under laboratory conditions. For the CA membrane, the water flux and reverse salt flux reached 48.85 L·m−2·h−1and 3.4 g·m−2·h−1, respectively. The reverse salt flux and water flux of the CA/ZIF-8 membrane are 2.84 g·m−2·h−1and 50.14 L·m−2·h−1, respectively. ZIF-8 has a promising application in seawater desalination.Keywords:desalination;ZIF-8;forward osmosis membranes

Novel functionalized forward osmosis (FO) membranes for FO desalination: Improved process performance and fouling resistance

Wenxuan Xu,Qingchun Ge

The potential of forward osmosis (FO) for water treatment can only be maximized with appropriate FO membranes . In this work, novel FO membranes functionalized with hydrophilic materials carrying both amine and sulfonate or carboxylate groups were synthesized via amidation reaction occurred on thin film composite (TFC) FO membranes. The performance of the newly explored FO membranes was evaluated in FO desalination and antifouling studies. Significant improvement in FO performance was observed for the novel FO membranes, in which the water flux increases more than 19% for the sodium taurine (ST) modified membrane (ST-modified membrane) relative to the pristine TFC FO membrane when pure water and 0.5–2.0 M MgCl 2 as the respective feed and draw solutions. Meanwhile, the ST-modified membrane produced a water flux 33% higher than that by the pristine TFC FO membrane in seawater (3.5 wt% NaCl) desalination with 2.0 M MgCl 2 as the draw solution, drastically increasing water recovery efficiency. The water flux decline of the ST-modified membrane is 46% lower than that of the pristine membrane with sodium alginate as a foulant. Introducing sulfonate or carboxylate ionic groups onto FO membrane surface is crucial to enhance the membrane antifouling ability and thus improves FO performance, which provides new insight in novel FO membrane exploration.

Preparation and Characterization of the Forward Osmosis Membrane Modified by MXene Nano-Sheets

Yuqi Nie,Chaoxin Xie,Yi Wang

The Forward Osmosis (FO) membrane was the core of FO technology. Obtaining a high water flux while maintaining a low reverse solute flux has historically been considered the gold standard for a perfect FO membrane. In a thin-film composite FO membrane, the performance of the membrane was determined not only by the material and structure of the porous support layer but also by the structural and chemical properties of the active selective layer. Researchers have selected numerous sorts of materials for the FO membranes in recent years and have produced exceptional achievements. Herein, the performance of the modified FO membrane constructed by introducing new two-dimensional nanomaterial MXene nano-sheets to the interfacial polymerization process was investigated, and the performance of these modified membranes was investigated using a variety of characterization and testing methods. The results revealed that the MXene nano-sheets played an important role in improving the performance of the FO membrane. Because of the hydrophilic features of the MXene nano-sheets, the membrane structure may be tuned within a specific concentration range, and the performance of the modified FO membrane has been significantly enhanced accordingly. The optimal membrane water flux was boosted by around 80%, while its reverse solute flux was kept to a minimum of the resultant membranes. It showed that the addition of MXene nanosheets to the active selective layer could improve the performance of the FO membrane, and this method showed promising application prospects. Keywords:forward osmosis membrane;MXene nano-sheets;water flux;reverse solute flux

Seawater pretreatment with an NF-like forward osmotic membrane: Membrane preparation, characterization and performance comparison with RO-like membranes

Zhikan Yao,Lu Elfa Peng,Hao Guo,Weihua Qing,Ying Mei,Chuyang Y. Tang

A nanofiltration-like (NF-like) forward osmosis (FO) membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization and applied for seawater pretreatment . The prepared NF-like FO membrane shows much higher water permeability and higher divalent salt to monovalent salt selectivity compared to a commercial reverse-osmotic-like (RO-like) FO membrane. The comparison between NF-like FO membrane and RO-like FO membrane in FO process was systematically investigated by using an antiscalent (sodium polyacrylate , PAANa) solution as draw solution. Both NF-like and RO-like FO process showed high rejection of alginate and sulfate. However, the water flux and monovalent salt (NaCl) passage in NF-like FO process were much higher, which enables the NF-like FO membrane to be a better candidate for pretreating seawater. The findings provide new insights on the design and preparation of FO membranes for seawater pretreatment .

Modification of forward osmosis membrane with naturally-available humic acid: Towards simultaneously improved filtration performance and antifouling properties

Yan-Fang Guan,Bao-Cheng Huang,Yun-Jie Wang,Bo Gong,Xinglin Lu,Han-Qing Yu

In this work, a thin-film composite forward osmosis (FO) membrane was fabricated on polyethersulfone substrate by interfacial polymerization with naturally-available humic acid (HA) as a stable membrane additive in the support layer. Compared with the pristine polyethersulfone substrate, the incorporation of HA significantly altered the cross-section structure, increased average pore size and porosity of the substrate, leading to a thinner polyamide layer, further increasing the water flux (permeability). Specifically, the FO membrane showed a higher water flux (~20 L m − 2  h − 1 ) with the introduction of HA than the membrane synthesized without HA (~15 L m − 2  h − 1 ) in the FO mode with 2 M NaCl as draw solution. Moreover, the selectivity of the membrane was improved ~45% by dosing 0.8 wt% HA into the substrate, in comparation to the pristine membrane without HA doped. Besides, the average roughness of the polyamide layer was reduced by up to 68% when HA was present in the substrate, which mitigated the fouling potential. Thus, a slower flux decline ratio (~60%) was observed for the membrane modified with 0.8 wt% HA than the pristine membrane (~80%). Taken together, our findings shed light on using natural-available HA for effectively and efficiently modifying membrane substrate to simultaneously enhance the permeate-selectivity performance and the anti-fouling behavior in FO membrane process. The fundamental causes of these differences in membrane separation performance and fouling behavior are considered and related to the physical and chemical characteristics of support layer (i.e., porosity and pore size) and polyamide layer (i.e., active layer thickness and roughness) of membranes.

Construction of SiO2@MWNTs incorporated PVDF substrate for reducing internal concentration polarization in forward osmosis

Xuan Zhang,Liang Shen,Chen-Yu Guan,Chu-Xuan Liu,Wan-Zhong Lang,Yan Wang

This work provides a facile and effective way of incorporating SiO 2 @MWNTs in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate to alleviate the internal concentration polarization (ICP) impact of the resultant thin film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membranes for the first time. The in-situ decoration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursor was conducted, resulting in improved hydrophilicity and the excellent dispersion of synthesized SiO 2 @MWNTs in PVDF membrane substrates accordingly. Effects of the SiO 2 @MWNTs concentration on the morphologies and properties of the modified substrates, and further impact on the polyamide (PA) layer structure are investigated via various characterizations. Besides, the intrinsic separation properties and forward osmosis performance of resultant TFC-FO membranes are also systemically studied. In comparison with the control TFC membrane, SiO 2 @MWNT-modified TFC membranes exhibit higher water fluxes with the enhanced membrane selectivity, as indicated by the decreased J S /J V values (from 1.10 to 0.19 g/L). This work therefore presents an alternative approach to prepare TFC-FO membranes with enhanced water flux as well as increased selectivity.

Controlling the morphology and performance of FO membrane via adjusting the atmosphere humidity during casting procedure

Hao-Ran Zuo,Gui-Ping Cao,Meng Wang,Huan-Huan Zhang,Chen-Chen Song,Xu Fang,Tao Wang

Forward osmosis (FO) has received great interest for its considerable potential in a wide range of fields. In this work, the morphology and performance of FO membrane were regulated by adjusting the atmosphere humidity ( H C ) of casting procedure. The polysulfone support layer was casted under various atmosphere humidity levels ranging from 40% to 80%. By multi-techniques such as SEM, AFM, and XPS, it was proved that the atmosphere humidity had modified the surface morphology and thickness of the skin layer in support layer, which contributed up to 90% of the structure parameter, resulting in distinct morphology, thickness, and cross-linking degree of active layer. The active layer with sparse bead-like wrinkles on the smooth surface of support layer casted at H C   =   65% showed the highest water permeability [26.9 (L/m 2   h   MPa)] and considerable low salt permeability [0.0390 (L/m 2   h)]. It was found that the water flux of FO-65 was 27% and 46% higher than that of FO-80 in AL-DS and AL-FS mode, respectively, and the salt rejection was as high as 98%. Our work highlighted the importance of considering the effect of atmosphere humidity during casting when design an FO membrane for appropriate performance.

Chitosan-modified graphene oxide as a modifier for improving the structure and performance of forward osmosis membranes

Chun-Hui Du,Xin-Yi Zhang,Chun-Jin Wu

Chitosan (CS) with good hydrophilicity and charged property was used to modify graphene oxide (GO), the obtained GO-CS was used as a novel modifier to fabricate thin film composite forward osmosis (FO) membranes. The results revealed that the amino groups on CS reacted with carboxyl groups on GO, and the lamellar structure of the GO nanosheets was peeled off by CS, resulting in the reducing of their thicknesses. The GO-CS improved the hydrophilicity of polyethersulfone (PES) substrate, and their contact angles decreased to 64° with the addition of GO-CS in the substrate. GO-CS also increased the porosity of the substrate and surface roughness of FO membrane, thereby optimizing the water flux and reverse salt flux of FO membrane. The average water flux of the FO membrane reached the optimal flux of 21.34 L/(m 2 h) when GO-CS addition was 0.5 wt%, and further addition of GO-CS to the substrate would decrease the water flux of FO membrane, and the reverse salt flux also decreased to the lowest value of 2.26 g/(m 2 h). However, the salt rejection of the membrane increased from 91.4% to 95.1% when GO-CS addition increased from 0.5 to 1.0 wt% under FO mode using 1 mol/L sodium chloride (NaCl) solution as draw solution (DS). In addition, high osmotic pressure favored water permeation, and at the same concentration of DS, magnesium chloride (MgCl 2 ) exhibited better properties than NaCl. These results all suggested that GO-CS was a good modifier to fabricate FO membrane, and MgCl 2 was a good DS candidate.

Efficiency and mechanism of sludge thickening by a novel sandwich-like forward osmosis composite membrane constructed on microporous polyethylene separator

Fen Chen,Jingyuan Yu,Jintai Hu,Guoqing Zhang,Chunhui Du,Xuchun Li

Sludge thickening is a critical step for deep sludge dewatering, but energy consumption and efficiency are still the bottlenecks. Forward osmosis (FO) provides a promising choice due to its flexible configurations, low energy consumption and high quality of recovered water. This study proposed a new method to construct a sandwich-like FO membrane on commercial polyethylene substrate for sludge thickening. The combined modification of FO membrane using Fe 3+ -mediated polydopamine (PDA) interlayer and hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid (HOSA) grafting polyamide (PA) layer obtained good performance for sludge thickening. Its pure water flux ( J w ) increased by 2.5 folds and the reverse salt flux ( J s ) decreased by 2.7 folds, respectively. Excellent antifouling property and higher water flux were also achieved even after running for several cycles (∼48 h) during sludge thickening. More importantly, more than 98 % of nutrients (e.g., COD, TN, TP and NH 4 + -N) were rejected in sludge, and thus good quality of the recovered water was obtained, greatly mitigating the burden of following wastewater treatment. Mechanism was revealed by comprehensively characterizing the membrane and foulants in the sludge using 3D fluorescence spectroscopy (F-EEM). Performance of FO method using different draw solutions was examined systematically, and the feasibility of utilizing synthetic seawater as draw solutions was assessed. This study proposed a new FO method for efficient sludge thickening, and highlighted the potential application of the method using seawater and industrial saline wastewater as draw solutions in decentralized wastewater treatment.

Antibacterial effect of ethyl-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids anions on forward osmosis membranes

Megawati Zunita,Budiman Batara,Graecia Lugito,I. Gede Wenten,Katja Loos,Sun Theo Constan Lotebulo Ndruru

Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as promising materials in various sectors, particularly for enhancing membrane separation and antibacterial performance in water and wastewater treatment applications. This study investigates the antibacterial effects of ethyl methylimidazolium ([EMIM] + )-based IL anions on forward osmosis (FO) membranes. Imidazolium-based IL cations were synthesized using a microwave method and grafted onto a thin-film composite (TFC) membrane to improve bacterial inhibition and separation performance. A novel approach utilizing ultrasound methods was employed to integrate polyamide (PA) and ILs onto the polysulfone (Psf) membrane surface. Among the tested ILs, [EMIM][NTf 2 ] demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli , as evidenced by agar disk diffusion and total plate count (TPC) measurements. The Psf-PA-[EMIM][NTf 2 ] membrane significantly outperformed other membranes in antibacterial activity and exhibited excellent FO membrane performance. The results indicate that incorporating ILs into FO membranes enhances hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties, making them highly suitable for water and wastewater treatment. This study provides valuable insights into developing dual-functional membranes with improved antibacterial and separation performance, contributing to more effective and sustainable treatment technologies.

Antibacterial thin film nanocomposite forward osmosis membranes produced by in-situ reduction of selenium nanoparticles

Xiaotong Xu,Hanmin Zhang,Tianyu Gao,Jiaheng Teng,Mengyang Lu

In this study, we present a facile method for the in-situ reduction of selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) on a thin-film composite forward osmosis (FO) membrane. As an essential nutrient, Se is superior in terms of both low off-target toxicity and application potential. Given the superiority of Se, this study explored the application of Se NPs in the field of FO membrane separation and water treatment . In this study, Se NPs were evenly distributed on the polyamide layer of thin film nanocomposite (TFN) FO membranes and were found to significantly improve the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface and reduce the zeta potential value. Moreover, the water flux increased from 14.0 L m −2 h -1 (TFC FO) to 16.6 L m −2 h -1 (1 wt% Se TFN FO), while a slight increase in the reverse salt flux was observed. The diffusion inhibition zone tests revealed distinct antibacterial effects, and the bacteriostatic rate (BR) and live and dead cell staining tests showed a high BR (100 % of 1.5 wt% Se) of the Se NP-modified membranes on both gram-negative ( Escherichia coli ) and gram-positive bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus ). Thus, Se NPs as antibacterial agents offer a new option for membrane functionalization and water treatment.

Polyethylene separator supported thin-film composite forward osmosis membranes for concentrating lithium enriched brine

Nan Sun,Pengjia Dou,Wentao Zhai,Hailong He,Long D. Nghiem,Vahid Vatanpour,Yuebiao Zhang,Changkun Liu,Tao He

To extract lithium from salt lake brine involves a process of separation and concentration. After separating lithium from brine, the lithium ion concentration is generally a few hundred mg/L which is far below the required 20-30 g/L (as Li + ) before precipitation as lithium carbonate. The concentration step of a lithium enriched brine is crucial but highly energy-intensive. Spontaneous forward osmosis (FO) technology offers the possibility for concentrating lithium ions with low energy. Because the concentrating process involves both feed and draw solution with very high salinity, it is highly desirable to have a high performance FO membrane with a low structural parameter as well as a high rejection to ions. In this work, thin polyethylene separator supported FO (PE-FO) membranes were prepared and post-treated stepwise with benzyl alcohol (BA) and hydraulic compaction. The effect of the post-treatment on the FO performance was systematically analyzed. Excellent FO performance was achieved: the water flux and reverse salt flux selectivity were 66.3 LMH and 5.25 L/g, respectively, when the active layer is oriented towards the 0.5 M NaCl draw solution with deionized water as the feed. To the best of our knowledge, this FO flux is the highest ever reported in the open literature under similar test conditions. Applied in concentrating lithium enriched brine, the membrane showed superior water flux using saturated MgCl 2 as draw solution. A new FO model was established to simulate the water flux during the concentration process with good agreement with the experimental results. The promising results using PE-FO membrane for lithium enrichment opens a new frontier for the potential application of FO membranes.
