A multi-branched trinuclear ionic liquid demulsifier (EDHBr-IL) was synthesized using glycerol triglycidyl ether, di- n -hexylamine and 1-bromododecane as raw materials using a simple “one-pot” method. Its structure was characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectra. EDHBr-IL exhibited a favorable demulsifying performance in W/O emulsions at lower temperature. The demulsifying efficiency (DE) of 300 mg/L of EDHBr-IL at 50 °C reached 90 % with for 2 h. It showed an excellent acid, alkaline and salt resistance. A relatively high DE was achieved at a pH range of 4–12 and a salinity of 10,000 mg/L. In addition, the demulsification mechanism was explored based on interfacial properties and micro examination. EDHBr-IL has substantial potential for the demulsification of W/O emulsions due to its simple and safe preparation, and performance comparable to that of with commercial demulsifiers.

Cationic polymers have garnered considerable attention as mRNA carriers due to their structural tunability and chemical diversity. Nevertheless, their broader application remains limited by poor stability under physiological conditions and cytotoxicity associated with excessive charge density. Here, we report thiourea-modified poly( l -lysine) (PLL-T) carriers constructed by combinatorial side-chain modification with ionizable and hydrophobic isothiocyanates. The resulting thiourea linkage introduced two hydrogen bonding donor sites, enabling stronger hydrogen bonding with mRNA. These hydrogen bonding could synergize with electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, forming multiple cooperative interactions with mRNA. This design enhanced mRNA encapsulation, colloidal stability, and high transfection efficiency without increasing cytotoxicity. The optimized PLL-1A1B(T) variant achieved over 10,000-fold higher transfection efficiency than the parent polymer PLL, and outperformed the commercial gold-standard Lipofectamine MessengerMAX in both HEK293T and RAW264.7 cells. Compared with its amide-linked analogue PLL-1A1B(A), in which the amide linkage provided only a single hydrogen bonding donor site, PLL-1A1B(T) exhibited superior mRNA encapsulation (91 % vs. 42 %), higher storage stability, and over 50-fold increase in intramuscular transfection. Unlike PLL-1A1B(A), which induced high levels of inflammation, PLL-1A1B(T) exhibited minimal inflammation in vivo. Importantly, PLL-1A1B(T) enabled efficient delivery of mRNA cancer vaccines and elicited potent CD8 + T cell mediated antitumor immunity. A single administration of PLL-1A1B(T)@E6/E7 mRNA vaccine achieved 77 % tumor suppression rate (TSR) in the TC-1 tumor model. Moreover, in combination with anti PD-1, PLL-1A1B(T)@OVA mRNA vaccine achieved 90 % TSR in the B16-OVA tumor model. This study demonstrates hydrogen bonding-driven carriers engineering as a versatile strategy to tune nucleic acid-carrier interactions, offering a potent and safe platform for mRNA therapeutics.

This study develops a new type of lightweight, high-strength porous cordierite ceramic with isolated spherical pore structures by using oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions stabilized by synthesized submicron cordierite platelets as precursors. The particle hydrophobicity required for oil-water interface stabilization originates from in-situ adsorption of short-chain amines on particle surfaces. The type of dispersed system formed via mechanical shearing depends on amine concentrations and alkyl chain lengths. While stable O/W emulsions are formed at higher amine concentrations, the threshold for complete emulsification decreases with increasing alkyl chain length. Increasing amine concentration improves emulsion viscosity and stability, ultimately reducing the average droplet size. The preferred orientations of cordierite platelets at the oil-water interface and in the continuous phase lead to strong multilayered pore walls and dense struts during sintering, endowing the 65%-porous ceramic bodies with a compressive strength tunable by pentylamine concentration and up to 69.2 MPa.

Organic circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence (CPRTP) materials represent an emerging research frontier with broad application prospects. However, achieving efficient and controllable CPRTP remains challenging due to inefficient chirality transfer and the limited ability to regulate chiral environments. Here, we develop a strategy involving self-assembled chiral homopolypeptides to realize manipulable CPRTP. Chiral homopolypeptides functionalized with achiral phosphorescent terminals are first designed, which self-assemble into vesicles exhibiting weak CPRTP. Remarkably, dispersing these vesicles into a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix induces structural reorganization, leading to inversion and significant amplification of CPRTP. Experimental and computational studies reveal the critical role of matrix-assistance in chirality propagation, inversion, and amplification. Moreover, multicolor afterglow films with tunable emissions are readily achieved by varying the terminal phosphor. This work not only establishes a universal platform for constructing tunable CPRTP materials through homopolypeptide self-assembly but also provides deep mechanistic insights into supramolecular chirality manipulation.

Lead sulfide colloidal quantum dots (PbS CQDs) exhibit tunable infrared bandgaps via quantum confinement but suffer from trap states predominantly localized on {100} facets, which severely degrade device performance in large CQDs due to increased facet exposure. To address the persistent challenge of fabricating high-quality large CQD films (>1.7 μm exciton peak), we developed a solution-phase exchange method to synthesize defect-controlled PbS CQDs. Furthermore, a self-powered p-i-n photodetector integrating a WOx interfacial modification layer was engineered. The WOx layer enhances contact quality at the metal electrode/PbS CQD film interface, which achieves an ultra-low dark current density of 4.54 nA cm −2 at −0.5V. Then, the device demonstrates excellent responsivity and detectivity across a broad range of illumination wavelengths, from 0.36 μm to 1.7 μm. Notably, the device achieves an exceptional detectivity for infrared light at 1.7 μm, exceeding 10 10 Jones. These findings pave the way for designing and developing novel device structures for high-performance infrared photovoltaic detectors with extended wavelength capabilities.

Lipids are structural components of biomembrane and also have multiple cellular functions. Lipids are difficult to be studied due to their great diversity. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) has played an important role in lipid analysis. However, the detection of specific lipids still suffers from challenges such as low selectivity and signal interference from other lipids, especially in complex biological samples. In this study, we have synthesized a series of N-alkyl-9-aminoacridines (N-alkyl-9AAs) with different alkyl chain lengths as the matrices for MALDI-MS analysis of phospholipids and created a unique strategy to distinguish phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) from other membrane phospholipids. A laser-induced ultrafast photochemical click reaction between N-alkyl-9AA and the amino group enabled to selectively tag PE species in source with an apparent yield up to 97%. Meanwhile the interference from phosphatidylcholine, most frequently encountered in MS analysis, was avoided. Among the N-alkyl-9AAs, C6-9AA exhibited the best performances and offered higher detection sensitivity for PEs in comparison to 9AA. This approach was successfully applied to the identification of PEs in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This work not only provides a novel matrix for selective analysis of PE but also demonstrates a new way for fast screening of target biomolecules based on photochemical click reaction, avoiding tedious procedures for derivatization. In addition, it makes a valuable contribution to the understanding on the mechanism of MALDI.

The formation and transformation
process of nanomaterials often
involves intermediates that are difficult to detect. Consequently,
unraveling these dynamic evolution pathways remains a significant
challenge. Here, we report the room-temperature evolution of two magic-size
cluster (MSC) isomers, MSC-448 and MSC-430, with an identical (CdTe) 34 core composition. We show that the conversions from CdTe
prenucleation clusters (PNCs) to MSC-448 to MSC-430 are induced by
linear primary amines with low steric hindrance. Investigation on
the reversed transformation from CdTe MSC-430 to MSC-448 by in situ UV–vis spectroscopic monitoring reveals that
their interconversion is not a direct rearrangement. Instead, it proceeds
via optically transparent precursor compounds (PCs) via a monomer-assisted
process. Kinetic analysis reveals the first-order behavior with a
rate constant of 0.025 min –1 and an activation energy
of 56.0 kJ·mol –1 . We propose that monomer substitution
is the rate-determining step. Our findings illustrate the stepwise
pathways of CdTe MSC isomerization and highlight the critical roles
of ligands and monomers in mediating structural change at the nanoscale.

Cytosolic delivery is the fundamental prerequisite for messenger RNA (mRNA) therapeutics. However, most delivery systems rely on endocytosis and are limited by inefficient endosomal escape, suffering from low delivery efficiency and strong dose dependence. Here, we report a ctivatable m embrane- d estabilizing lipid- p olycations (AMDPs) that enable a predominantly non-endocytic mRNA delivery via cell-membrane anchoring and destabilization. AMDPs are constructed by introducing esterase-labile quaternary ammonium side chains with hydrophobic motifs onto a poly(L-lysine) backbone, allowing stable mRNA complexation through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Upon enzymatic activation, AMDPs undergo a cascade-triggered cleavage process, in which the hydrophobic moieties are removed to expose carboxylates adjacent to cationic alkyl chains. This transformation generates an inverse phospholipid-like zwitterionic architecture that promotes membrane pairing and localized destabilization, enabling direct cytosolic release of mRNA. AMDPs realizes dose-independent transfection, with 6.25 ng mRNA producing protein expression comparable to 200 ng, corresponding to a 32-fold reduction in mRNA input. Following intravenous administration, AMDPs achieve liver-selective mRNA expression, with 95% of total protein expression confined to the liver. Therapeutic delivery of interleukin-10 and relaxin mRNAs significantly attenuates fibrosis and restores liver architecture in a CCl 4 -induced mouse model. This work establishes a mechanistically distinct and non-endocytic strategy for low-dose and organ-targeted mRNA therapy. Download: Download high-res image (164KB) Download: Download full-size image

The carbonylation of amines offers a promising route for synthesizing N-substituted carbamates with high atom economy. However, conventional catalysts exhibit limited catalytic efficiency, and the underlying proton transfer mechanism remains elusive. Herein, we reported a metal-free, room-temperature strategy utilizing 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) as a dual hydrogen bond catalyst to synergistically activate propylamine (PA) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC). This green catalytic system achieves a 10-fold acceleration in reaction rate compared to other hydrogen bonding catalysts under mild conditions. This is enabled by dual hydrogen bonding of TBD with PA and DMC, which facilitates rapid proton transfer and stabilizes tetrahedral intermediates. Theoretical calculations confirm that the dual hydrogen bond system significantly lowers activation energy compared to single hydrogen bond analogs. Furthermore, it was revealed that the hydrogen bonding network within the product is the primary factor responsible for the sluggish reaction rate. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a dual hydrogen bond system in accelerating the carbonylation of amines and provides a green route to access carbamates.

Self-assembly of proteins into well-organized proteinosomes has attracted great interest due to the potential medical and biological applications of the structures. Herein, a new concept of electrostatic assisted fabrication of proteinosomes is proposed. The self-assembly is performed by using multi-step dialysis approach, where negatively charged bovine serum albumin-poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (BSA-PNIPAM) bioconjugate and positively charged enzyme (lysozyme or trypsin) are initially dissolved in phosphate buffer (PB) solution at a high salt concentration, and subsequently the protein solution is dialyzed against PB solutions at low salt concentrations, resulting in the formation of biofunctional proteinosomes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cryo-TEM and light scattering results all demonstrate the formation of hollow structures. The wall of a proteinosome is composed of BSA and enzyme (lysozyme or trypsin), and PNIPAM chains of the bioconjugate are in the corona stabilizing the structure. In comparison with the native enzymes, the enzyme molecules in the assemblies basically retain their bioactivities. The proteinosomes formed by BSA-PNIPAM and lysozyme can be dissociated in the presence of trypsin, and those self-assembled by BSA-PNIPAM and trypsin are able to be self-hydrolyzed, resulting in the dissociation of the structures in aqueous solution. The size and morphology changes of the proteinosomes in the hydrolysis are studied.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), light scattering, and lowering the series resistance of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) provide positive effect on the performance of photovoltaic device. However, the exciton recombination on the noble metal NPs accompanying above influences will deteriorate the performance of device. In this report, surface-modified Ag@oxide (TiO 2 or SiO 2 ) nanoprisms with 1–2 nm shell thickness are developed. The thin film composed of P3HT/Ag@oxides and P3HT:PCBM/Ag@oxides is investigated by absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and transient absorption spectroscopy. The results show a significant absorption, PL enhancement, and long-lived photogenerated polaron in the P3HT/Ag@TiO 2 film, indicating the increase of photogenerated exciton population by LSPR of Ag nanoprisms. In the case of P3HT/Ag nanoprisms, partial PL quench and relatively short-lived photogenerated polaron are observed. That indicates that the oxides layer can effectively avoid the exciton recombination. When the Ag@oxide nanoprisms are introduced into the active layer of P3HT:PCBM photovoltaic devices, about 31% of power conversion efficiency enhancement is obtained relative to the reference cell. All these results indicate that Ag@oxides can enhance the performance of the cell, at the same time the ultrathin oxide shell prevents from the exciton recombination.

A supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) based ultrasound-assisted extraction method was developed for the extraction of fangchinoline and tetrandrine from Radix Stephaniae tetrandrae. SUPRASs were prepared in aqueous solutions containing hexafluorobutanol (HFB) and alkanols for the first time. HFB was used as a coacervation agent and density-regulating agent for the SUPRAS preparation. The biosurfactants, namely hexanol, octanol, and decanol were selected as the amphiphiles. The possible mechanism of the new SUPRAS formation was studied. The hydrogen-bond and hydrophobic interactions between HFB and alkanols are the main driving forces for the new SUPRAS formation. The crucial parameters influencing the extraction yields of FAN and TET, such as type and content of amphiphile, type and content of coacervation agent, volume of SUPRAS, ultrasound time, and extraction temperature were investigated and optimized. HFB-hexanol SUPRAS was found to be the most effective extraction solvent for the extraction of fangchinoline and tetrandrine from Stephaniae tetrandrae. Under the optimized conditions, HFB-hexanol SUPRAS showed extraction yields of 7.11 and 13.89 mg g-1 for FAN and TET, respectively. The values were higher than those of obtained with other extraction methods. The developed method has a great potential for extracting alkaloids from natural plant materials.
